Dear Readers,
Das allgegenwärtigste und zugleich geheimnisvollste Phänomen
dieser Welt ist die Zeit. Es gibt unterschiedliche Perspektiven, die Zeit
zu betrachten. Die Physik beschreibt sie als eine Abfolge von Ereignissen. Philosophisch betrachtet, beschreibt die Zeit das Fortschreiten der Gegenwart von der Vergangenheit kommend hin zur Zukunft. Zeit bestimmt unser Leben von der Geburt bis zum Tod. Und
nicht nur deshalb ist die Zeit ein kostbares Gut.

at time. In physics it is described as a sequence of events. Philosphically seen, time describes the progress of the present coming from
the past and going towards the future. Time controls our life from

Time is also ticking on the polo green and before you know it the
‘green season’ in Europe is already over. This time we travel to China
to report from the British Polo Day and the Beijing Open, to reflect
on the highlights of the Swiss polo season by reviewing the Hublot
Polo Gold Cup in Gstaad and the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polo Masters.
After a brief visit to the De Bethune Polo Cup in Liechtenstein, we
continue our journey by taking a look at the German polo events
Engel & Völkers Berlin Maifeld Cup and the Fürstenberg Trophy in
Donaueschingen.

Fifth British Polo Day China took place at the Tang Polo Club, Beijing
The Hackett China Cup
500 guests celebrate
polo and lifestyle
British Polo Day returned to Beijing’s prestigious Tang Polo Club for
the fifth British Polo Day China, kindly hosted by the Owner and
Chairman of the Tang Polo Club Shilai Liu. Some 500 guests and VIPs
including HRH SAR Samdech Preah Mohessara Chakrapong Norodom, HRH Norodom Ravichak, British Defence Attaché to Beijing
Brigadier Simon Levey and couturier Grace Chen came together to
celebrate the best of British craft and heritage.
Swapping pedals for ponies, the British Polo Day China players then
took to the field for the official Opening Ceremony, before the The NUO
Hotel British Exiles / China Team took on home side, the Royal Salute
Tang Polo Club in The Land Rover Tang Dynasty Plate. The two six goalers on the NUO Hotel British Exiles Team were a close match for the
two pros on the Royal Salute Tang Polo Club Team. With wonderful
play – and fine runs from Miguel Diaz and Adrian Laplacette, as well as
their British Exiles counterparts – the home team Royal Salute Tang
Polo Club emerged triumphant with an 8.5-5 win.
Prize-giving ceremony
The second match of the day, The Hackett China Cup, saw the RJI Capital British Schools Team take on their Chinese counterpart: the Land
Rover BCC Team. Felipe Courel and Juan Ramiro played a tough offensive against the British Schools Team, but wonderful play from Jack
Severn and Roy Prisk supported Chevy Beh who scored the star-goal
in the second chukka, resulting in a 7-4.5 victory to the RJI Capital British
Schools Polo Team.
Chevy Beh was awarded the Royal Salute ‘Most Valuable Player’ and
Jack Severn, the Holland & Holland ‘Shot of the Day’; while magnificent
grey mare Grey Girl won NUO Hotel Beijing’s ‘Best Playing Pony’.

Beijing International Polo Open Tournament at the Sunny Times Polo Club
China takes the Championship Cup

Great victory for Xia Yang and his Team China
Beijing International Polo Open Tournament with
teams from Argentina, New Zealand, Singapore and
China and China-Argentina Horse Fair Final kicked
open in Yanqing. More than 2000 people visit the
tournament. In the final China with Captain Xia
Yang beat Argentina with 6:1 goals and win the
Championship trophy of the Beijing Open 2015.

Argentina takes the second place, followed by
New Zealand and Singapore. Marcial Socas was
awarded as the ‘Most Valuable Player’. The award
for Best Playing Pony was given to ‘Danfeng
Chaoyang’. Special programs for participation, experiencing and interaction like ponies demonstration, photographing and balance wheel riding
were also conducted. Further, the fantastic symphony music, the 2022 Melody of Snow and 2015
Beijing International Polo Open Tournament Music Festival was played by incited orchestra. Beautiful music of homelands of players was played,
presenting guests with unique, fashionable and
healthy polo.

In unique circumstances Team E. I. Sturdza Investment Funds and Team SIR, new to the tournament
this year, have tied in first place and will share the
2015 Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad Trophy.
Following much deliberation from the tournament officials the decision was made to change the format of the final of the Hublot Polo
Gold Cup Gstaad. Taking into consideration the safety of the players
and ponies, the waterlogged pitch was deemed too dangerous to
play a competitive match.

Die Teams E. I. Sturdza Investment Funds
und Team SIR teilen sich den Sieg beim
diesjährigen Hublot Polo Cup in Gstaad. Ein
Novum in der Geschichte des TraditionsEvents. Mit Rücksicht auf die Gesundheit
der Spieler und Pferde entschieden die
Verantwortlichen, den Final aufgrund des
regendurchtränkten Bodens in einem Exhibition Match auszutragen. Das Match endete mit 7:7 Toren. Das Spiel um Platz drei
– entschieden im Penalty-Schiessen – gewann Team Banque Baring Brothers Sturdza
SA gegen das Team Gstaad Palace 5:4.
The crowds were not left unsatisfied, the announcement was made the final would be replaced
by a 4-chukka exhibition match. The four team-patrons and the four best players of the tournament were split into two teams to play in a non-competitive manner. One of tournament’s referees, Tony Keyte commented, “The pitch was too waterlogged to play a safe match and our top
priority is the safety of the horses and the safety of the players. The decision was discussed at
length with the players and the committee and everyone agreed an exhibition match would be
the best option to replace the final.”

The teams remained head-to-head throughout
each chukka until the final whistle blew with
a finishing score of 7-7. The best play of the
match was undoubtedly the impressive teamwork between Hublot Polo Gold Cup favourite,
Eduardo Menendez (ARG) – who is competing
in the tournament for the 16th time – and
home favourite Michael Brüggler (SUI); an
aerial shot from Menendez opened up the
field for Brüggler to accelerate down the pitch,
and strike a powerful shot cleanly through
the posts. Gasps echoed among the crowds at
the unbelievable display of talent from both
players.
The third place play-off was decided by penalties. Team Banque Baring Brothers Sturdza SA
beat Team Gstaad Palace 5-4 to take third
place position at the 20th edition of the tournament.

For the third consecutive year, the Team Lynx Energy has won the Jaeger-LeCoultre
Polo Masters. In an exciting final, Cyrille Costes (0), Luciano Valiente (0),
Thierry Vétois (+3) and Brieuc Rigaux (+5) defeated Team VT Wealth Management,
including Thomas Fedier (0), Sacha Fedier (0), Fabian Bolanterio (+3) and
Federico Bachmann (+5), by 10-7.

The final attracted 5,000 spectators, who witnessed a thrilling match at the Polo Club de
Veytay in Switzerland. The fourth and last period of the match was the most intense. Team
VT Wealth Management scored three goals, but it was not sufficient to impede the domination of Lynx Energy.
At the 2015 Jaeger-LeCoultre Polo Masters, six teams with a handicap of 6 to 8 goals competed against each other over the course of ten days at Polo Club de Veytay in the 27th edition
of the event. Players from many different nations participated in the tournament, such as USA,
France, Luxembourg, Argentina, Germany and Switzerland.
Team Cardo and Lion’s Polo Team fought in the small final for 3rd place. The match was very
tight and both teams fought until the last minute of the game. Finally, Team Cardo won by
6.5-6 against Lion’s Polo Team. The half point represents the difference of handicaps of the
players of both teams. By late morning, the host team Veytay Jaeger-LeCoultre and Team
EFG Bank played for fifth place. Veytay Jaeger-LeCoultre defeated EFG Bank by 5.5-3 and
was placed fifth.

Das Beste kam in der Saison 2015 für den Polo Park
Zürich zum Schluss. Mit dem Spatenstich für die
neuen Stallungen Ende September erfüllt sich ein
lang ersehnter Wunsch nach einer für Spieler und
Pferde optimalen Infrastruktur. Gegründet 1998, ist
der Polo Park Zürich seit Jahren der mitgliederstärkste Polo Club der Schweiz und zugleich ein
weit über die Region hinaus bekanntes
Ausbildungszentrum.

Mit dem Neubau – entworfen vom Zürcher Architekturbüro Küchel
Architects AG – entsteht auf dem Gelände des Polo Park Zürich im
malerischen Zürcher Weinland eine Infrastruktur, die in der Schweiz
und im angrenzenden Ausland einzigartig ist. Die Anlage gliedert
sich in ein zweigeschossiges Betriebsgebäude und die angrenzenden
Stallungen mit 57 grosszügigen, artgerechten Pferdeboxen, 6 Pferdewaschplätzen und 9 Sattelkammern. Ergänzend dazu entstehen
44 Parkplätze.
Im Erdgeschoss des Betriebsgebäudes entstehen Garderoben mit
Duschen und Toiletten für die Spieler, ein Empfangsbereich sowie eine
Lounge mit vorgelagerter Terrasse mit freiem Blick auf das Polofeld. Im
Obergeschoss des Betriebsgebäudes werden Unterkünfte für die
Grooms eingerichtet.

«Der Ausbau der Infrastruktur läutet eine neue Ära in der erfolgreichen
Geschichte des Polo Park Zürich ein», erklärte PPZ-Präsident und Gründer Markus Gräff anlässlich des Spatenstichs. Die Bewilligung des Kantons, auf dem Clubgelände Polo zu spielen, lag von Beginn an vor. Doch
der Wunsch nach festen Stallungen und einem Betriebsgebäude habe
17 Jahre lang auf seine Realisierung warten müssen. Als Hauptgrund
dafür nannte Gräff das Abarbeiten von Auflagen und gesetzlichen Vorschriften. Dies nicht zuletzt, da eine Umzonung des Geländes in eine
ausschliesslich für den Polosport genutzte Erholungszone nötig war und
sich auf dem Gelände des Polo Park Zürich die Grundwasserfassung der
Gemeinde Hettlingen befindet. Bei der Gestaltung und der Auswahl der
Materialien für den Bau habe man grossen Wert darauf gelegt, dass sich
die Anlage harmonisch in die Umgebung einfügt. Aus diesem Grund
wurde der Zaun, welcher die an der Kopfseite des Hauptfeldes entstehenden Stallungen und das Betriebsgebäude verbindet, in Holzständerbauweise realisiert.
Die Anlage zeichnet sich durch eine nachhaltige Bauweise aus. Eine
Solaranlage wird rund 50 % des benötigten Strombedarfs decken. Die
vor 15 Jahren gepflanzten und mittlerweile zu einer stattlichen Grösse
herangewachsenen Pappeln, die dem Neubau weichen müssen, werden ausgegraben, über den Winter gelagert und nach Fertigstellung der
Anlage an geeigneter Stelle wieder eingesetzt. Für die Gesamtleitung
des Baus zeichnet die Generalunternehmung Priora AG, Geschäftsstelle
Zürich, verantwortlich.

At the end of September the polo Park Zurich started with the construction of the new PPZ commercial building (with wardrobes,
showers and toilets for the players, a lounge and a terrace while
gazing across the polo field and accommodation of staff on the first
floor) and stables. 57 horseboxes, 6 wash places, 9 tack rooms and
44 parking lots will be built. The stables will be available from the
beginning of the polo season 2016. The changing rooms, apartments
for the grooms and the lounge area is planned to be finalized in
September 2016.

Zweifel der Höhepunkt in der noch jungen
Geschichte des Polo Club Liechtenstein. Der

Six teams with players from Chile, the UK, Germany, Argentina,
Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the Czech Republic were competing
for victory at the De Bethune Princely Polo Cup in Liechtenstein. The
final between the Team Laurent Perrier and Team Axalo lead by the
Polo Club Liechtenstein President Verena Marxner could have
hardly been more riveting. After four regular chukkas resulted in a
draw, a fifth chukka was called to get a decision. With the golden
goal, Bautista Lopez Fuentes secured victory for the Team Laurent
Perrier.

Fürstenberg Trophy in Donaueschingen
Victory for Team Octogone
Sechs internationale Teams kämpften um die begehrte Fürstenberg Trophy in Donaueschingen. Im Final
setzte sich das Team Octogone [Emanuele Boni (0), Edouard Guerrand-Hermès (0), Marcello Caivano (+3)
und Nico Lopez (+3)] gegen das Team Berenberg mit 8:5,5 Goals durch. Niklas Steinle wurde als «Most
Valuable Player» ausgezeichnet. Official Timekeeper war die Schweizer Uhrenmanufaktur Fortis.
Seit 2011 richtet das Haus Fürstenberg dieses prestigeträchtige Turnier im Rahmen des grossen CHI Spring-Reitturnier «Internationales
S.D. Fürst Joachim zu Fürstenberg-Gedächtnisturnier» aus. Mit Spielern aus Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien, der Schweiz und Argentinien ist die Fürstenberg Trophy inzwischen fester Bestandteil des
internationalen Pferdesport-Events. Das «Internationales S.D. Fürst
Joachim zu Fürstenberg-Gedächtnisturnier» ist der einzige Reitsportanlass, der Wettbewerbe in den Disziplinen Springen, Dressur,
Fahren und Polo vereint. Ein Konzept, das reitsportbegeisterte Zuschauer seit Jahren anzieht. «Die besondere Mischung aus sensationellem Sport und bunter, fröhlicher Umgebung macht unsere
Fürstenberg Poloturniere aus», so Christian Erbprinz zu Fürstenberg.

park-like grounds with two fields (1 playing field and 1 practice

polo teams to the Engel & Völkers Berlin Maifeld Cup. In the final
Team Tom Tailor [Gastón Maíquez (+7), Christian Badenhop (+1),
Uwe Schröder (0) und Jamie Le Hardy (+4)] managed to win a close
victory (10-7) against the Team Allianz Kundler [Magnus Kaminiarz
(0), Patrick Maleitzke (+3), Pedro Fernandez Llorente (+5), Miguel
Amieva (+4)]. Gastón Maíquez, man of the match, was awarded as
‘Most Valuable Player’. In the match for the third place Team PerrierJouët beat Team Juwelier Reuer with 11-8,5 goals.

Porsche 911 Targa GTS 4
Persuasive performance meets style

Die Kombination aus Targa und GTS ist ein Novum in der 50-jährigen
Modellgeschichte des Klassikers. Damit erfüllt die Zuffenhausener
Edelschmiede mit dem Topmodell ihrer Targa-Reihe das, worauf
viele Porschefans gewartet haben.
Nachdem wir den temperamentvollen Schönling bereits einige Tage
auf Schweizer Strassen gefahren und seine Kraft und unseren Gasfuss
auf das Tempolimit gesetzeskonform gezügelt hatten, führte uns ein
Besuch bei Wilhelm Rieber («Maybach für das Handgelenk») fast in
Sichtweite der Geburtsstätte des Porsche Targa GTS. Die angesichts
der frühen Stunde kaum befahrene Autobahn in Richtung Stuttgart
bot die Möglichkeit, das Leistungspotenzial des schönen Schwaben
zumindest ansatzweise zu testen. Beim Antrieb gilt für die Topversion der Targa-Reihe wie für die beiden anderen Überrollbügelmodelle: Targa immer nur mit Allrad. Und dies ist sicher ein Grund
dafür, dass der ebenso leidenschaftlich wie giftig am Gas hängende
3,8-Liter-Boxer in nahezu jeder Situation extrem gutmütig – um nicht
zu sagen narrensicher – reagiert. Porsche hat die Leistung des GTS
auf 430 km/h hochgeschraubt und ihm serienmässig ein SportChrono-Paket in Verbindung mit dem PASM-Fahrwerk sowie
20-Zoll-Rädern und einer Sportabgasanlage verpasst.

Schnell (4,7 Sekunden von 0 auf 100 km/h) und durchzugsstark tritt der
911 Targa GTS 4 an, das Siebenganggetriebe lässt sich präzis wie ein
Uhrwerk schalten. Mit einer Spitzengeschwindigkeit von 303 km/h
offeriert er beeindruckende Werte, doch auch wenn wir die Tachonadel
nie jenseits über 240 km/h getrieben haben, so offenbarte sich dennoch
die fantastische Strassenlage des Targa GTS 4. In Kurven wie auf den
Geraden klebt er am Boden, reagiert präzis auf jede Lenkbewegung und
sorgt damit für viel Fahrspass. Die offiziellen Verbrauchswerte von
10,0 Litern pro 100 Kilometern mit Schaltgetriebe haben wir (11,2 Liter/100 km) nicht erreicht. Doch angesichts eines solchen Boliden wäre
es kleinlich, sich an Verbrauchswerten festzubeissen.
FA HRZEUGE · C ARS
Optisch unterscheidet sich der Targa GTS 4 nicht nur mit seinen 20 Zoll
grossen, schwarz glänzenden 911-Turbo-S-Rädern von den anderen
Targa-Modellen. Sport-Aussenspiegel und GTS-Schriftzüge auf den Türen und der in schwarz lackierte «targa»-Schriftzug auf dem silbernen
Überrollbügel sowie schwarz verchromte Auspuffendrohre sind ebensolche Erkennungsmerkmale des GTS 4 wie das im Innenraum mit
roten Nähten abgesteppte Alcantara. Die straff gepolsterten, vierfach
verstellbaren und mit einem schwarzen GTS-Schriftzug auf den Kopfstützen versehenen «Sportsitze Plus» bieten hohen Sitzkomfort. Ansonsten überwiegt die klare, auf das Wesentliche beschränkte Funktionaliät. Ein Highlight – wie bei allen Targa-Modellen – ist das Öffnen des
Decks, das fast geräuschlos unter der sich weit öffnenden Glaskuppel
im Heck verschwindet.
Der 911 Targa GTS 4 ist eine gelungene Symbiose aus Leistung und
Design. Sein Grundpreis von CHF 167 700.00 (PDK/CHF 172 750.00) ist
angesichts des überzeugenden Gesamtpakets angemessen.

history of this classic. With this top model in their long row of Targa
versions, the German luxury sports car maker from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen has launched a car that many Porsche fans have been craving for. When it comes to the drivetrain, also the top version of the
Targa series has the same feature as the other two roll bar models:
Targas always come with four wheel drive. And this is surely the
reason why this 403 HP strong 3.8 litre boxer is not only passionately
and viciously responsive to the slightest touch of the throttle, but also
has an extremely forgiving if not to say foolproof driving behaviour.
In short: the Porsche 911 Targa GTS is a great sports car and – as was
to be expected – a lot of fun to drive.

Oysters
Aphrodisiac
born from
the foam of
the ocean
According to Greek mythology, the goddess of
love Aphrodite was born from an oyster. And so
it’s little wonder that already the ancient Greeks
and Romans believed in the aphrodisiac effect of
oysters. Still today, many a cavalier bets on this
seafood delicacy when preparing for a romantic
candlelight dinner. Whether and – if so – how
many oysters are indeed able to stimulate the
libido is likely depending on the belief of the
person eating them. But there is no doubt that
when enjoyed with a squirt of lemon and together
with fine champagne, they are a delicacy that is
cherished by a community of oyster lovers all
around the globe.

Already back in Ancient Rome, oysters were a firm part of any festive
dinner. The emperor Vitellius reportedly ate more than a thousand
oysters during a single orgiastic feast. And also Julius Caesar was
very fond of his oysters. Necessity is the mother of invention, as can
be seen already back in the days of the ancient Romans. When the
demand for oysters exceeded the available supply, the Romans
imported oysters chilled with blocks of ice from Britain and France.
Excessive consumption of oysters remained a privilege of the
rich in the following 2000 years to come. As oysters are light and
easily digestible, it is indeed possible to consume large amounts.
However, historic reports of oyster gluttony should be taken with a
pinch of salt.

aphrodisierende Wirkung der Austern glaubten. Und so mancher
Kavalier setzt noch heute bei einem romantischen Candle-LightDinner auf die Köstlichkeit aus dem Meer. Ob und wenn überhaupt,
wie stark Austern tatsächlich die Lust anzuregen vermögen, hängt
wohl vom Glauben dessen ab, der sie verzehrt. Bereits im antiken
Rom durften Austern bei festlichen Gelagen nicht fehlen. Kaiser
Vitellius soll bei einem einzigen Lustmahl mehr als tausend Austern
verspeist haben. Und auch Julius Cäsar liebte die Austern ausserordentlich.
Austern sind besondere Muscheln. Bis eine Auster herangewachsen
ist, vergehen drei bis vier Jahre. Seit mehr als 250 Millionen Jahren
auf unserem Planeten siedeln sie sich dort an, wo es starke Gezeiten
gibt. Mit der Unterseite fest am Untergrund verankert, filtern die Austern ihre Nahrung aus dem Meerwasser. Durch eine einzelne Auster
strömen pro Tag rund 250 Liter Wasser und dies muss sehr sauber
sein, denn die Austern reagieren extrem stark auf Verunreinigungen.
In Europa liegt ihre Heimat an den Küsten von Frankreich, Irland,
England und Holland. Auf dem nordamerikanischen Kontinent findet
man sie in den Küstenregionen des Pazifischen Ozeans und an der
Atlantikküste. Die von Feinschmeckern nicht ohne Grund favorisierten Austern findet man an den Küsten von Marennes-Oléron. Die
Austern, die dort gezüchtet werden, haben bereits vor 350 Jahren
Ludwig XIV dermassen gemundet, dass er begeistert ausgerufen
haben soll: «Es gibt keine köstlicheren Austern als in Marennes.»
Kenner geniessen Austern nur von Oktober bis April, dann sind sie
nicht mehr milchig und haben den besten Geschmack. Austern sind
sehr nährstoffreich und gelten als gesund. Auch wenn die ihnen
nachgesagte aphrodisierende Wirkung wissenschaftlich nicht erwiesen ist, der schlanken Linie sind sie allemal zuträglich. Denn Austern bestehen zu über 80 % aus Wasser, 9 % aus Eiweiss, 4,8 % aus
Kohlenhydraten und nur zu 1,2 % aus Fett. Zudem enthalten sie die
Vitamine A, B1, B2, B12 und viele Mineralstoffe.
Über 97 % aller weltweit angebotenen Austern sind mittlerweile
Pazifische Felsenaustern. Sie gelangen meist unter der Bezeichnung
«Fines de claires» in den Handel. Die mit Abstand grössten Mengen
an Austern werden heute im Fernen Osten angeboten. Während
Austern in Europa meist roh genossen werden, bevorzugen die Amerikaner und Asiaten sie gegart.

Oysters are a very special kind of shellfish. It takes three to four years
for an oyster to be fully grown. Having been around on our planet for
more than 250 million years, they settle in places with strong tides.
Firmly anchored to the ground, the oysters are filter feeders getting their
food from the surrounding waters. One single oyster filters about 250 litres of water per day – and this water must be very clean since oysters
are extremely sensitive to pollution.
Connoisseurs only eat oysters between October and April, then they
are no longer milky and have the best flavour. Oysters are very rich in
nutrients and are said to be good for your health. Even though the reported aphrodisiac effect is not scientifically proven, they are certainly
good for your waistline, as oysters consist to more than 80% of water,
9% of protein, 4.8% of carbohydrates and only to 1.2% of fat. Additionally, they contain the vitamins A, B1, B2, B12 and many minerals.
Oysters are sought-after all around the world. In Asia they are bred as
pearl oysters or as food which is consumed cooked or roasted. In Europe they can be found along the coasts of France, Ireland, Britain and
the Netherlands. On the North American continent they occur in the
coastal regions of the Pacific Ocean and along the Atlantic Ocean coast.
Gourmets are particularly fond of oysters originating from the French
coast of Marennes-Oléron, and for good reason. The oysters harvested
there have already pleased the royal palate of Louis XIV some 350 years
ago, with the effect that he reportedly exclaimed in excitement: “There
are no oysters more delicious than those from Marennes!”
Today, over 97% of the globally sold oysters are Pacific oysters. They are
usually traded as ʻFines de clairesʼ. By far the largest quantities of oysters
are consumed in the Far East. While oysters in Europe are typically
enjoyed raw, the Americans and Asians prefer them cooked.

Oyster safaris in Denmark
Anyone who is looking for an extraordinary nature and taste experience and is not afraid of
chilly temperatures should book an ʻoyster safariʼ off the coast of Denmark. Nature guides take
guests on an insightful trip between the islands of Rømø, Mandø and Fanø in the North Sea
looking for Pacific oysters. During this oyster safari lasting several hours, participants learn a
lot about the tremendous increase of the Pacific oyster in the tidelands of the North Sea, the
history and future of the region or about the nature on and around the islands of Rømø,
Mandø and Fanø and their surroundings.
The final highlight of the oyster safari is the tasting of the collected oysters with lemon and
champagne.

Oysters with
champagne or vodka?

Sipping champagne together with your oysters might be seen as decadent
by some, but the combination actually works very well. Nevertheless, today
many gourmets love pairing oysters with vodka. For the perfect taste experience, first you have the oyster with a dash of lime melt on your tongue, then
you enjoy an ice-cold soft vodka. However, make sure you don’t choose any
random vodka for this delicious combination – we rather recommend the
ʻXellentʼ vodka from the Swiss distillery DIWISA. While the sparkling bubbles
of a fine champagne may bring out the stark mineral aromas of the oyster,
the soft flavour of the Xellent is an equally beneficial match. No wonder, as
oysters and the triple-distilled Xellent Swiss vodka have a lot in common. The
former only thrive in clear, clean water, the latter is made of pure Swiss rye
and glacier water that has been filtered over many years in the Titlis region.

tea spoon of fresh lemon juice
tea spoon of freshly prepared horseradish
dash Tabasco sauce
pinch of icing sugar
pinch of salt
tomato (remove kernels) finely chopped
table spoon of finely chopped fresh chives
Mix the vodka, lemon juice, horseradish, Tabasco
sauce, sugar and salt together and stir. Pour the mix
over the chopped tomatoes and add chives.
Sprinkle the vodka dip onto each oyster and add
some freshly ground pepper – enjoy with ice-cold
vodka.

serval and a Siamese cat, the Savannahs are the tallest cat breed in the world, sporting a shoulder height
of up to 45 centimetres. Characteristic for those exotic beauties are their large ears and the spotted coat
resembling a predatory animal. The prices vary depending on the generation, on how true to the type the
cat is and on the pattern of the fur. Starting from 1,000 Euro for a Savannah kitten, top specimens of the
first generation can easily fetch prices of 10,000 Euro and more among dedicated cat lovers.

Humans have been fascinated by cats since
the dawn of time. Worldwide there are
some 40 recognised cat breeds. While
pure-bred dogs are subdivided into their
various tasks they perform for people
(hunting, guard, protective, sled or companion dogs), cats are exclusively bred for
their beauty. The Savannah cats originate
from the United States. There, the first kittens came into this world in 1980 as the
result of a cross between a serval and a
Siamese. Even though it took a while, stepby-step the Savannah cat was established
as an official breed. We have visited the
Swiss Savannah cat breeder Corina MüllerRohr (www.chsavannahs.com) in the Swiss
town of Rudolfingen and learned some interesting facts about the breeding and
keeping of those beautiful creatures.

Let me just start with a few words about the
breed ‘Savannah’ and some explanations
about the difference of the number of generations. The Savannah cat is an exotic and young
cat breed that originated from a cross between
an African Serval and a Siamese cat in the
1980s. The aim of the Savannah breed is to
create a cat that closely resembles the beautiful African Serval in look combined with the
uncomplicated character of a domestic cat.
The Savannah cat is a tall, slender cat with long
legs, long neck and a rather small, straight
head with large ears featuring so called wild
spots.
Are there any special regulations of laws that
must be observed for keeping a Savannah
cat?
All Foundation Savannahs have an F and a
number associated with it to indicate how
many generations it is away from its African
Serval ancestor. An F1 cat has an African Serval
as a father and would be the first generation
removed from the African Serval. Therefore an
F1 Savannah cat has about 50% up to 75% of
Serval blood, depending on the mating. An F2
would be the second generation removed
from the African Serval with a range of 25% to
37.5% of African Serval blood and so on.
A cat bred down from the African Serval, but it
is at least 4 generations removed, is an SBT
(Stud Book Tradition) Savannah cat. The SBT
Savannah cat is a ‘pure’ Savannah that is guaranteed to have only Savannahs as parents for
at least 3 generations.
Since Savannah cats are a fairly new breed and
some are considered Hybrid cats, the hybrid
laws and regulations differ from country to
country, even from area to area. In Switzerland
the keeping of an F1 or an F2 Savannah cat
needs a permission by the veterinary department, including an open-air and an indoor
enclosure and an owner with an education in
animal care. Savannah cats up to and including
the fourth generation fall as Hybrid cats under
the Convention on International Trade in Endagered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES),
which needs to be considered when border
crossing.
Is there any particular knowledge required
by the owner to keep a Savannah cat? From
which generation are Savannah cats suitable
for normal cat lovers?
Besides the special regulations of laws that
must be considered, the owner has to be
aware that the Savannah cat is a hybrid feline
even in the lower generations. Savannah cats
can potentially have smaller livers due to the
Serval ancestry, which can increase the risk of
side effects with certain medications.

As they have a certain amount of predator blood in them, they could
react critically to ketamine, which is used for surgical procedures. Savannah cats are also very sensitive to vaccination. A veterinarian must
use different products that are specific to exotic or hybrid-bred felines.
Being hybrids, F1 through F4 Savannah males are always sterile with
very few exceptions. The females are reliably fertile from the first generation.
I recommend informing the veterinarian about purchasing a hybrid feline so he can prepare and educate himself in case the Savannah cat
needs any veterinarian support.
What are the key characteristics of Savannah cats?
Despite their origin from a wild cat, Savannah cats are comparable in
terms of attitude with other domestic cats. Savannah cats of the first and
second generation are bigger and especially taller than domestic cats.
Since they are closest to the African Serval, they are the ones that require the most attention. They bond very strongly to their owners and
need a lot of time. In F3 cats and all cats of later generations, the more
domestic traits come out, the size decreases, but they retain their long
legs, big ears and their wild appearance.
Savannah cats of all generations have very loving and outgoing personalities. They are highly intelligent and learn quickly. They are very affectionate and follow their favourite person around like a dog throughout
the house. Some even love to play fetch. Unlike other cats they are not

afraid of water and love to play with it. Their jumping ability is superior
to the normal domestic cat. A Savannah cat expects to be a family
member that is involved in every activity, rather than being just a usual
house pet.
Are Savannah cats any different from ‘normal’ cat breeds when it
comes to feeding? If so, what is a balanced diet for a Savannah cat?
Savannah cats need to be fed a high-quality cat food in wet and dry
form. The cats should get a high-nutrient, well-balanced food as well as
cooked or raw chicken. The nutrition must be grain-free, no corn, as it
is hard to digest for the cats and could cause intestinal problems.
Are Savannah cats rather recommended for single people or are they
family and kids-friendly? What about other pets?
There is no better family pet than a Savannah cat. A Savannah of lower
generation is the perfect choice for a family with other pets and small
children. As the higher generations are very time-consuming and require special permits, I particularly recommend lower generations, as
F3 or SBT Savannahs. They are more consistent in their type, personality and size are better foreseeable and their temperament is predictable.
These cats are very social and just want to have friends to play with. They
love being around children and other pets. They can easily be kept in
the house or in a spacious apartment. Most of them love to explore the
outside in the safety of an enclosed area or on a leash.
How do I recognise a reputable Savannah
cat breeder?
If you decide to take a pet as a new family
member it is always important to find a reputable breeder. For getting a Savannah cat it is
even more important. As they are hybrid cats
with special requirements, it is critical to have
a breeder with a huge knowledge about the
breed. The breeder should be willing to offer
expert advice and be available in the future to
discuss any problems any time. As basic requirements, the cattery must be clean and
well-organized and the kittens have to be

well-socialized with a health certificate and a
pedigree of an acknowledged cat association.
But the most important thing is that you feel a
huge portion of respect and love for the Savannah breed and the cats. You must feel that
the breeder is not selling you just something
but your friend which will accompany you for
the next 20 years.

most likely originates from the Portuguese
word ‘lobo-cerval’ meaning lynx. The fur of
the serval is tawny with black spots.

Marine chronometers –
sea-going timepieces with the highest
accuracy and a prize competition history

Timekeeping shows us how fleeting the moment is.
The ticking of a clock, resembling the beating of the
heart, always reminds us of the relentless passing of
time. No matter whether it's the speedy beats of a
wristwatch or the rhythmic pace of a pendulum
clock. It brings to mind that every moment passed
cannot be brought back and will only survive in our
memory.
Sunrise and sundown, the movement of the moon, the stars and the
passing of the seasons dictate the life of humans. Measuring those recurring events has obsessed mankind since the dawn of time and
through the ages gave rise to the art of timekeeping. A major breakthrough was made when a naval timekeeping system was developed
for ships in the 18th century.
For navigation out at sea it is essential to be able to determine the exact
position of the ship on the ocean. By observing the stars and by means
of the Jacob’s staff it is possible to determine the geographical latitude
(degree of latitude). Determining the correct degree of longitude, however, is a problem. The mathematician and astronomer Gemma Frisius
(1508–1555) realised already back in 1530 that there is a connection
between the precise time and the stars. He found out that the only
feasible way to identify the degree of longitude is by having a clock that
is accurate down to the second.

Before the time of accurate navigation systems, ships were lost out at
sea from time to time or it could take weeks before they found their port
of destination. On the 22nd of October 1707 off the coast of the Scilly
Islands, the HMS Association, Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell's flagship,
struck a reef in heavy weather. Three other ships of his fleet following
him were unable to change their course and followed the leading ship
onto the reef. More than 1450 sailors lost their lives. In 1714, the British
parliament passed the Longitude Act and offered a prize reward of
£ 20,000 for the inventor of a suitable method of determination or longitude clock.

a milestone – the sea Clock
John Harrison (1693–1776) was a trained carpenter with a passion for
making clocks, and so he ends up building his first longcase clock made
of oak wood in 1713 at the age of 20. He experiments and develops a
new kind of escapement which increases the accuracy. He transfers his
experience in wood onto metal, and after 5 years of building he presents
his invention to the Longitude Board: the Sea Clock which later will go
down in history as the H1. In the following year the clock goes out to
sea and the captains are impressed by the high precision of this novel
chronometer which even exceeds the accuracy required by the Board.
Nevertheless, Harrison doesn't get the expected prize money as the
Board wouldn't trust the amateur clockmaker and demands new trial

voyages. Instead he receives £ 500 for further development as the clockwork is still too large.
Harrisons designs a smaller clock and at the age of 68 years he presents his fourth model, the
‘H4’. In 1761 the HMS Deptford sets out heading for Jamaica with the H4 on board. After 81 days
at sea, the ship arrives at its destination as scheduled. The clock has a deviation of merely
5 seconds – a sensation. The Longitude Board still speaks of coincidence but grants a payment
of £ 10,000 to Harrision. However, he is only to receive the second half of the prize after King
George III intervenes on his behalf in 1773. For him it matters very little whether a carpenter or
clockmaker has solved the problem.

The royal navy gears up
The development of the Harrison H4 clocks had cost the same amount of money as building a
merchant ship. So the Royal Navy commissioned the clockmaker Larcum Kendall to make a copy
of the H4. This copy was completed in 1769 at a cost of £ 500 and was named ‘K1’. James Cook
took the K1 with him on his second voyage to the southern Pacific (1772–1775) and subsequently recommends this timepiece to be used by all English ships. But even the K1 was still too
expensive for ‘serial production’ and so the navy kept searching for less costly solutions. John
Arnold (1736–1799) simplified Harrison’s design and used other materials. From 1772, he built
his clock, which he called Chronometer, in serial production at a price of £ 100 per unit. Nevertheless, the competition for lower prices continued until other clockmakers started offering chronometers at a price of £ 80 which was acceptable to the navy. Thereafter, the navy equipped all
its ships with chronometers. For a long time Britain was far ahead in building marine chronometers. The first who succeeded to make chronometers outside of Britain were French and Swiss
clockmakers. German clockmakers took longer in achieving the required level of quality. Frequently German clockmakers would use English clockworks until the end of the 19th century.

improving the accuracy of pocket watches
Once they were able to manufacture marine chronometers with the
required accuracy, clockmakers also tried to achieve this level of precision with pocket watches. Quite a challenge since pocket watches were
much more demanding to the art of clockmaking. This was mainly due
to the fact that the clockworks of pocket watches are much smaller and
more delicate than those of marine chronometers.
A special challenge was the position of the oscillator consisting of a
balance wheel with a spiral torsion spring. In a marine chronometer, the
oscillator is in a horizontal position and the gimbal suspension of the
clockwork would make sure that it remains horizontal even in heavy
seas. In a pocket watch which is carried in a pocket, the oscillator (balance wheel with spiral torsion spring) is in a vertical position. The balance wheel is the timekeeping device used in a portable watch and
replaces the pendulum. It is responsible for the accuracy of a watch and
in the beginning consisted of a metal wheel with 2 or 3 spokes and the
balance spring made of steel. However, steel tends to change its elasticity depending on the temperature. This means that steel becomes
harder in cold temperatures and more sluggish under heat. As a result,
the balance wheel will oscillate faster when it’s cold and slower when
it’s warm, which in practice means that the watch will either lag behind
or be ahead of time.
This issue lead to the development of the compensation balance, which
allowed to compensate for the change in modulus of elasticity of the
balance spring with changing temperature and to obtain a high level of
accuracy.
However, new technologies sometimes tend to bring in new problems
on their own which will only show after a certain period of time. In this
case it was the observation that when pocket watches with compensation balance were used for a longer period, they became very inaccurate
over time. As a pocket watch is in daily use, it is constantly subjected to
temperature changes over and over again. Due to these continuous
changes in temperature, even the most precision-manufactured balance wheels developed imbalances over time as the rim ends of the
balance wheel no longer returned to their exact original position after
a certain period of time. These imbalances had a huge impact on the
accuracy of the watch. Depending on the position the watch was in, this
could result in a time loss or gain of up to 35 seconds.

Abläufe beschäftigte die Menschheit seit jeher und
führte im Laufe der Geschichte zur Entstehung der
Zeitmessung. Ein entscheidender Fortschritt
entstand durch die Entwicklung der Zeitmessung
in der Schifffahrt im 18. Jahrhundert.

Für die Navigation auf See ist es erforderlich, die genaue Position des
Schiffes auf See bestimmen zu können. Durch die Beobachtung des
Sternenhimmels und mit dem Jakobsstab kann man die geografische Breite (Breitengrad) ermitteln. Problematisch ist die Feststellung des korrekten Längengrades. Der Mathematiker und Astronom
Gemma Frisius (1508–1555) erkannte, dass die Ermittlung des Längengrades nur möglich ist, wenn man über eine auf die Sekunde
genau gehende Uhr verfügt.
Es gab immer wieder Verluste in der Schifffahrt, oder es vergingen Wochen, bevor die Schiffe ihren Zielhafen gefunden hatten. 1714 beschloss
daher das britische Parlament das Längengradgesetz und setzte ein
Preisgeld von 20 000 Pfund für den Erfinder einer geeigneten Bestimmungsmethode oder einer Längenuhr aus.

Nachdem es möglich war, Schiffschronometer mit der erforderlichen
Ganggenauigkeit herzustellen, wollte man diese Präzision auch bei
Taschenuhren umsetzen. Eine Herausforderung, denn Taschenuhren
stellten doch sehr viel höhere Anforderungen an die Uhrmacherkunst.
Dies vor allem, weil die Uhrwerke von Taschenuhren sehr viel kleiner
und feiner sind, als die der Schiffschronometer.
Wie Abraham Louis Breguet (1747–1823), der wohl bedeutendste Uhrmacher aller Zeiten, die Entwicklung der Uhren revolutionierte und

For many decades the kitchen was seen as the ‘work room’ of the
domestic staff or the housewife. Today it is one of the most important
rooms telling a lot about a home and the people living in it. This is
the place where the people cook, eat and sit together until late at
night. This is where parties unfold and quite often the kitchen has
even turned into a ‘playground’ for the stronger sex, since ‘real men’
who are able to master the world of haute cuisine are seen as sexy.
But what are the hallmarks of a modern luxury kitchen? What are the
first steps on the way to your dream kitchen? Before starting with any
planning, interior decorator Kathrin Schmied strongly recommends
to do a need analysis together with an expert, clearly defining which
requirements the future kitchens will have to meet. Who will be the
people using it (family or staff ) and what are the expectations with
regard to finishes, designs and materials? Some of the key aspects in
this are also the available space and existing architecture. Functionality, user-friendliness, well organised and ergonomic work flows,
enough storage space and countertops to work, but also excellent
craftsmanship and outstanding design – all these are aspects which
need to be considered in this analysis. Based on those findings you
will then be able to plan a tailor-made kitchen which will make the
owner happy and meet all requirements in daily life. Whether a
kitchen should be designed as open plan blending in with the living
area is not a question of trends, in Katrin Schmied’s view, but should
be decided according to the needs of the residents.
When it comes to kitchen fronts, a large variety of materials is used
today, starting from wood, varnished chipboard, high gloss compounds and glass all the way to Corian and natural stone. Whatever
the flavour of the day may be, classics such as white with glossy
surface will always be en vogue, often skilfully combined with other
materials and colours.
Some well-heeled kitchen lovers invest six-digit amounts into luxury
stoves in retro design. In some cases this actually makes a lot of
sense, reckons Kathrin Schmied. “Luxury stoves in retro style are
classics. You should look at them like a vintage car. This is a very
special item which you love and have developed a special relationship. From a technological aspect, retro stoves usually are state of
the art. Quite often they are customised pieces individually manufactured for the customer and can indeed give your kitchen the final
touch.” Extractor hobs integrated into kitchen islands are currently in
high demand, but the classic hob will always have its place.
When asked what characterises a luxury kitchen, Kathrin Schmied
replies: “Luxury is in the eye of the beholder. Luxury is a kitchen that
is aligned to the needs and desires. But for me luxury is also a kitchen
which accompanies you through the various stages of your life.”
Since a luxury kitchen is as individual as the people using it, it makes
sense to look around scouting the various trends and numerous offerings on the market – this inspires desires and ideas. Before putting
them into practice, however, you should always conduct the
above-mentioned need analysis to make sure that the dream of your
own tailor-made luxury kitchen turns into a happy reality.

Welche sind die grössten Fehler, die man als Bauherr bei der Planung machen kann?
Nur die Küche allein zu betrachten und die gesamte Wohnsituation nicht einzubeziehen. Deshalb
braucht es einen kompetenten Berater, welcher die Situation ganzheitlich betrachtet.
Was sind die ersten Schritte auf dem Weg zur Traumküche?
Vor der Planung sollte eine Bedarfsanalyse erstellt werden, die klar definiert, welche Anforderungen die zukünftige Küche erfüllen muss. Von wem (Familie oder Personal) soll sie genutzt
werden und welche Wünsche in puncto Oberflächen, Design und Materialien sind vorhanden.
Massgeblich sind dabei auch Grundriss und die bestehende Architektur. Funktionalität, Bedienkomfort, gut organisierte und ergonomische Arbeitswege, genügend Stauraum und Arbeitsflächen, aber auch eine exzellente Verarbeitung und ein Design, all dies abrundet, sind Aspekte, die
in die Analyse einfliessen müssen.

Funktionalität kontra Design, wo liegen die Schwierigkeiten, beide Aspekte zu vereinen?
Funktionalität und Design kann sehr gut miteinander vereinbart werden, das eine schliesst das
andere nicht aus. Das ist jedoch die Kunst des Fachmanns, diese beiden Aspekte zu vereinen.
Daher lohnt sich für den Bauherrn die Investition in einen kompetenten Berater, der die Wünsche
und Erwartungen des Auftragsgebers und die Funktionalität zu vereinen weiss.

Wo liegen die Vor-, wo die Nachteile einer zum Wohnraum hin offenen Küche? Läuft man
bei der Renovation einer bestehenden Liegenschaft nicht Gefahr, bei einer offenen Küchenlösung gleich auch den gesamten Wohn/Ess-Bereich erneuern zu müssen, damit die moderne Küche auch passt und nicht als Fremdkörper wahrgenommen wird?
Nach Auswertung der Bedarfsanalyse kennt man die Bedürfnisse der Bauherrschaft und kann
beurteilen, ob es Sinn macht, eine Küche offen oder geschlossen zu gestalten. Eine Küche ist
eine kostspielige und daher meist langfristige Investition, deshalb sollte nie nur das eine oder
andere in Betracht gezogen werden, sondern auch Optionen für die Zukunft angedacht werden.
Trends zu folgen, ist sicher kurzfristig attraktiv, aber ob der Kunde damit auf längere Zeit gut beraten ist, wage ich zu bezweifeln. Sowohl eine geschlossene wie eine offene Küche kann den
Bedürfnissen ihrer Benützer entsprechen. Der Kunde muss immer im Vordergrund stehen, dies
geht bei Planungen, die nur den Trends folgen, leicht vergessen.

Was gehört aktuell auf jeden Fall in eine luxuriöse Küche, auf welche Gadgets kann man aus
Sicht der Fachfrau getrost verzichten?
Diese Frage lässt sich nicht allgemein gültig beantworten. Luxus ist eine Frage des Betrachters.
Luxus ist eine auf die Bedürfnisse und Wünsche abgestimmte Küche. Luxus ist für mich aber auch
eine Küche, die durch die unterschiedlichsten Lebensphasen begleitet.

Gibt es bei den Küchenfronten Farben oder Materialien, die derzeit sehr en vogue sind? Gibt
es Klassiker, die nie aus der Mode kommen, und wenn ja, woran liegt dies Ihrer Meinung
nach?
Heute gibt es Fronten in Materialien wie Holz, MDF-Platten lackiert, Hochglanz gespritzt. Aber
auch Glas, Corian und Naturstein setzt man als Fronten ein. Klassiker wie Weiss mit einer glänzenden Oberfläche bleiben jedoch immer en vogue, oft jedoch gekonnt arrangiert mit andern
Materialien und in Kombination mit Farben.
Frei im Raum stehende Kochinseln sind sehr beliebt. Gibt es Parameter, die man beachten
sollte?
Kochinseln machen nur einen Sinn, wenn genügend Platz vorhanden ist und sie grosszügig
dimensioniert werden können.
Betuchte Liebhaber investieren für Luxusherde im Retrodesign sechsstellige Summen. Sind
diese Herde ein Gadget oder das i-Tüpfelchen in einer superluxuriösen Küche?
Luxusherde im Retrostil sind Klassiker. Man sollte sie wie einen Oldtimer beim Auto betrachten.
Diesen liebt man und hat meistens eine ganz besondere Beziehung dazu. Retroherde sind technisch auf dem neusten Stand, oftmals sind sie individuelle Kundenanfertigungen im «Retrokleid»
und können eine Küche durchaus markant aufwerten.

Dunstabzugshauben – die neuen Lösungen sind in die Kochinseln integriert, hat die klassische Dunstabzugshaube ausgedient?

Rückwände – Fliesenspiegel, Glas, Edelstahl, was ist modern und doch über Jahre hinweg
empfehlenswert?
Rückwände sollten immer im Zusammenhang mit der Arbeitsfläche angesehen werden. Es gibt
Situationen, wo ein Verputz absolut genügt, oder in einem alten Gebäude eine Steinwand – als
optisch ansprechendes Element – integriert werden kann. Wo die Rückwände mit Fett oder
Wasser in Kontakt kommen, ist es von Vorteil, ein Glas oder das Material der Arbeitsfläche
hochzuziehen.

Most buyers will be collectors looking for a particular piece, something better
than what they have now, or something they’ve never had before. They want to
curate their collections. They are looking for items that are rare, limited edition
or in colours that are new or discontinued.
Why Go Vintage? While the allure of finding the ideal ‘It Bag’ haunts many fashion-minded men and women, such bags are not the building blocks of an enduring
handbag collection. The It Bag is a fleeting phenomenon, on trend one month and
passé the next. Wildly expensive at the time of purchase, the It Bag plummets to a
fraction of its retail value in the blink of an eye. And soon enough, your trendy bag
has already begun to look a little sad – the stitching slightly frayed, the lacquer and
edge paint chipped, the leather conspicuously worn. Worst of all, it’s taking up space
in your closet.
While not a traditional investment, the handbag’s strength on the secondary market
has raised investment awareness among today’s savvy handbag shoppers. Collectors want pieces that will stand the test of time in quality, trend, and value. Who
wants to worry that an exorbitant purchase today will become a valueless ‘faux pas’
before year’s end – not to mention one that looks like a shell of its former self, having carried your daily necessities day after day?
Across all collecting categories, the secondary market is an indicator of the enduring
value of your collectible. That’s as true for handbags as for any other luxury investment. Research the resale value of that coveted It Bag (or last season’s equivalent)
before buying. If it is flooding the secondary market at a fraction of its original retail
price, you can be sure that bag is not a viable investment.

The solution – and my expert advice – is to stick to the classics. The
Hermès Kelly Bag – a nod to the brand’s equestrian heritage – has
changed little since its introduction in the 1930s. A Sellier, or stiff-sided,
Kelly from the 1980s can easily be mistaken for one purchased yesterday if cared for properly. Hermès bags are made by highly trained craftsmen using the finest materials and techniques: the skins are expertly
chosen and treated; the saddle stitch will never unravel. Each bag is
crafted to withstand the test of time. And should you desire a more
contemporary piece, brands like Hermès and Chanel have produced
colorful and modern interpretations of their classic bags. The fleeting life
span of the It Bag is not reflected in its high retail price. Hence, purchasing an iconic piece from a heritage brand like Hermès or Chanel – a
vintage bag on the secondary market – is a wiser investment for both
bank account and wardrobe. If you decide one day that your bag has
served its purpose, a strong secondary market awaits your bag, where
it’s sure to fetch a fair and attractive price. And if you never grow tired
of it, there is no better heirloom for future generations.
Legend has it that Coco Chanel was introduced to tweed in the 1920s
by the Duke of Westminster, who wore the material often for hunting
and fishing during time they spent together in the Scottish Highlands.
Coco fell in love with Scottish tweed, and went on to adapt the material
for women’s wear for the very first time. Since then, tweed has been
featured in every Chanel collection to date, becoming a cornerstone of
the brand. Chanel’s mastery of tweed is a result of its successful marriage
of modern coloration with lightweight fabric that is hand-spun at
Chanel’s dedicated ateliers in France. This pink and blue tweed bag is a
modern iteration of the iconic Chanel Flap Bag. The off-center clasp and
diagonal handles add surprising design elements that make this piece
both thought-provoking and unique. Christie’s sold its first Chanel bag
in 1978 in London and today Christie’s four vintage handbag live auctions are anticipated by clients from Asia, Middle East, Europe and Russia equally.

The secondary market of vintage handbags in its current form began to
emerge in the early 2000’s with the ‘It Bag’ phenomenon. People
wanted bags that were sold out so they would offer to buy the bag from
friends, dealers, or seek services that could find the right pieces. These
same pieces would often end up back on the market a few months later
for cents on the dollar as a new ‘it’ bag emerged. In the late 2000’s, the
recession was setting in and tastes were changing. People were not as
interested in seasonal pieces that were ‘uncarryable’ only a season later.
They were getting smarter about their purchases and thinking about
which bags they could buy that would hold their value, and be in style,
for a longer period of time. Peoples’ tastes shifted to more classic, triedand-true pieces. As the recession ended, these shoppers had gotten
very savvy and knew the pieces that were valuable and we’re ready to
start taking risks. In the last few years, these shoppers have begun to
morph into collectors as they passionately seek the special and rare
pieces that no one else can find.

What are the main reasons driving the rarity factor of vintage
handbags?
NUMBERS
The top-performing brand is arguably still Hermès, especially its classic pieces. Exact
numbers of specific bag styles and colours released each year still remains a mystery
to those outside of the French luxury house.
COLOUR
Most of the vintage bags offered at auction are in immaculate condition and of rare
colours. Standouts include a 25 cm wide Birkin in a bright green bamboo hue (a new
colour this year), while a 30 cm Birkin in brilliant fuchsia called Braise is a rare Hermès
shade. A Kelly bag in blue sapphire can date from different production periods. Hermès still has a colour called blue sapphire, but it’s not the same as the one of a recently sold blue sapphire Kelly bag, which was darker and now discontinued. Sometimes the firm ‘rest’ a colour, making it inactive in production and then active a few
years later.
SKIN
Hermès uses only one skin per bag, so it can be hard to find one large enough to
make bigger sizes. Therefore, a 40 cm Birkin in crocodile would be extremely rare.

contemporary re-imagining of the classic Hermès Orange – the colour made famous
by the house’s unmistakable shopping bags and boxes. How fitting, then, that the

The Sellier construction, with its exterior seams and hard edges, gives this bag a
particularly chic and stylish appearance. Meanwhile, the bag’s 32 cm size makes it
the perfect size for everyday wear. An heirloom bag with a modern twist, this Kelly
is ideal find for new collectors and seasoned connoisseurs alike.

More importantly how do you keep the condition and
value of your back?
After you purchase a handbag, it may be tempting to rip open the box, trash the
tissue paper and lose the receipt, but it is important to keep all of these items
together if you want the best resell value. Collectors can overlook rare and collectible handbags with substantial condition issues and missing items, making it
difficult to sell your beloved bag once the time is right. However, it is relatively
simple to keep your handbags looking good as new months, or even years, later.
Here some advice:
CLEAN
After using your handbag, the first step is to empty it of its contents and dust. Feel
free to turn the bag inside out if it is soft and use a lint roller to get those hard to
reach places. If your bag is crafted of hard pressed, grained leather, wipe the exterior
of the bag softly with a damp paper towel or an alcohol-free baby wipe. If your bag
is made from natural or untreated leather, or if it is exotic or suede, then simply dust
it off with a dry paper towel. For more serious issues, take it to a professional.
STUFF
Now that your bag is empty and clean, you must stuff it in order for it to keep its
shape. I suggest using acid-free tissue paper, a small pillow, or bubble wrap. Be sure
to wrap exposed hardware (including buckles and zipper pulls) with a piece of tissue
paper to keep it from making imprints on your bag over time.
COVER
Place your bag in a soft, breathable dust bag. If you don’t have one, you can use a
cotton pillowcase in a neutral color, in order to prevent color transfer. Make sure that
the dust bag is large enough so that your handbag doesn’t warp over time.
SEPARATE
Do not have the hardware of one bag touching another bag, it may leave a mark. In
addition, do not have anything touching patent leather, this will cause color to transfer from the patent leather to whatever is next to it.
HANDLE WITH CARE
Refrain from hanging your bags – this will distort the shape of the handles.
STORE
If you have it, store your bag in its original box. Otherwise, line your bags up on a
shelf in your closet. If the shelf is not tall enough, do not allow the handles of the bag
to be pressed down – in this case, the bag should lie flat. You can keep track of your
bags by including a note with the name of the bag on the box or dustbag, so that
you don’t have to rifle through ten boxes before you find your Etoupe 35!

begleitet. Entstanden sind dabei viele Unterwasserreportagen,

begeistert haben. Nun hat der Schweizer ein neues Schiff, die
KOKOMO, mit 21 Metern rund drei Meter länger als die STARFISH
und ebenso wie diese bei der Nordhavn Werft gebaut. Bereits jetzt

Die KOKOMO ist ein sehr komplexes Schiff mit vielen Systemen und Aggregaten. Konzipiert

Unterwasserfotografen höher schlagen lässt. Doch nicht nur der technischen Perfektion galt
das Augenmerk von Jürg Beeli, um nicht nur Spass an den Tauchgängen zu haben, sondern
auch das Leben an Bord auf den langen Fahrten geniessen zu können, wurde beim Innenausbau der KOKOMO viel Wert auf Qualität, aber ebenso auch auf Funktionalität gelegt. Alle
nach Kundenwunsch – mehrheitlich aus edlem Holz – gefertigten Details des Innenausbaus
verleihen der KOKOMO Klasse und Stil. Dies widerspiegeln die drei Zweier- und die Einzelkabine, die geschmackvollen Bäder, aber auch der Living Room und die Brücke. Und da an
Bord genau wie in jedem Haushalt an Land Wäsche gewaschen werden muss, gehören
selbstverständlich auch Waschmaschine und Tumbler zur Ausrüstung der KOKOMO.
The KoKoMo starting her
maiden voyage
Over many years, the STARFISH and her
predecessor have accompanied Jürg Beeli
and his crew to the most beautiful diving
spots in the world. This resulted in many
stunning reports from the underwater
world which have amazed the readers of
our magazine. Now, the Swiss sailor has a
new ship, the KOKOMO. Already now Jürg
Beeli is raving about his new ship: “She is a
wonderful boat with unbelievable capabilities and qualities”.
Just like the STARFISH, also the KOKOMO
has been built at the Nordhavn shipyard in
Xiamen. Designed as a work boat for divers,
the ship is 21 metres long, 5,6 metres wide,
almost 9 metres tall (measured from the
waterline) and has all the perks that make
the heart of professional divers and underwater photographers beat faster.

Dabei musste der Gründer von PADI Europe, dem grössten modularen
Ausbildungssystem Europas, sich lange in Geduld üben, bis er vor wenigen Wochen seine KOKOMO endlich in Kalifornien übernehmen
konnte. Mehr als zwei Jahre vergingen seit der Vertragsunterzeichnung
im Mai 2013 mit dem Bau bei der Nordhavn Werft in Xiamen, China, bis
zur Ablieferung der KOKOMO in Kalifornien, wo noch die letzten Details
eingebaut wurden.
Angetrieben wird die KOKOMO von einem 320 PS starken 9-LiterSechszylinder-Dieselmotor aus dem Hause John Deere. Für den Antrieb
der Hydraulikpumpe und zum Fahren bei Ausfall des Hauptmotors verfügt die KOKOMO zusätzlich über einen 4,5-Liter-Vierzylinder-Dieselmotor mit 80 PS. Die vier, zusammen 10,000 Liter fassenden Tanks garantieren abhängig vom Seegang eine Reichweite von 4500–6300 km.
Darüber hinaus hat die KOKOMO noch sehr viel mehr Technik an Bord,
die zu bedienen – und wenn nötig auch während der Expeditionen
zu warten – Chefsache ist. Als Ingenieur bringt der Gründer von PADI
Europe das technische Verständnis dazu mit und steht meist auch selbst
auf der Brücke und steuert das 85 Tonnen (beladen) schwere Schiff
weltweit sicher durch die Meere.
Gefragt danach, warum er sich wiederum für die Nordhavn Werft als
Erbauer seines Schiffes entschieden hat, entgegnet Jürg Beeli: «Das
Tauchen in fernen Riffen, an Orten der Welt, von denen die meisten
Leute noch nicht mal den Namen kennen, birgt gewisse Unwägbarkeiten, daher bin ich für meine Gäste und Crew darauf angewiesen, dass
jedes Detail sicher funktioniert. Dies war bei der STARFISH so und wird
bei der KOKOMO ebenso sein.» Die Jungfernfahrt führt die KOKOMO
entlang der Amerikanischen Westküste nach San Francisco. Und anschliessend geht es südwärts zu den Inseln der Socorro Gruppe,
Clipperton und Cosos nach Panama, wo Jürg Beeli auf Begegnungen
mit ungewöhnlichen Meeresbewohnern hofft. Im Sommer 2017 plant
er dann, nach 5 Jahren Pazifik wieder in die Karibik zurückzukehren.

Much more than an exhibition – a herd of 100 elephants visits Bangkok
Anantara’s Elephant Parade Bangkok
is coming to town!
Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas is partnering with Elephant Parade® and top local and international
celebrities and artists to bring the world’s largest open air art exhibition, Elephant Parade, to Bangkok.
The exhibition (starting on 1st December 2015 and ending on January 29th 2016) will see a herd of
almost one hundred 1.5 metre brightly coloured elephants – which have been specially decorated
and hand painted and will be exhibited as a herd in key locations throughout Bangkok.
The first major Elephant Parade was held in
Rotterdam in the Netherlands in 2007 and
has since been exhibited in cities across the
world including London, Singapore, Amsterdam, Milan and Hong Kong. Elephant Parade Bangkok will be a first for Thailand and
the only one for the city.

select and fund a range of sustainable programmes that benefit the elephants of Thailand, including Wildlife Alliance, Freeland,
WildAid, Think Elephants and Thai Elephant
Therapy Project.
The event was originally created after founder
Marc Spits and his son Mike visited the Friends
of the Asian Elephant hospital in Lampang,
Thailand, which treats sick and injured elephants. There they saw Mosha, a baby elephant who lost her leg after stepping on a
landmine when only seven months old and
was the first elephant to receive a prosthetic
limb. She is fitted with a new leg every year,
and each time must learn to walk all over
again. Mosha features in each Elephant Parade

The most famous balloon trips
On top of the world
Das ganze Jahr über haben Florida-Reisende
die Möglichkeit, mit einem Heissluftballon
in die Lüfte zu steigen. Die einstündige Fahrt
beginnt schon früh am Morgen. Bereits in

Eine Ballonexpedition in Dubai führt über
Dünen, grüne Oasen und Dattelplantagen.
Dabei können die Reisenden nicht selten
Kamele und Gazellen beobachten, die durch
die Wüste ziehen.
Auf den Spuren der Vergangenheit geht es
bei einer spektakulären Ballonfahrt über die
antiken Schauplätze Ägyptens. Im Rahmen
der zweistündigen Tour geniessen die Teilnehmer den Ausblick auf den Tempel von
Hatschepsut, die Ruinen von Luxor, das Tal
der Könige und die Kolosse von Memnon.
Über den Wolken, hiess es Mitte August im
ungarischen Debrecen. Über 100 Piloten sorgten
bei der 19. Europameisterschaft der Heissluftballons für ein buntes Spektakel am Himmel. Doch
nicht nur Profis können in den Lüften schweben
und einen fantastischen Ausblick geniessen. Ob

wollen, gibt es reizvolle Ballontouren.
