Bericht des Präsidenten
Leider war der Sommer
kuehl und nass und die
Camper konnten die
Farm, incl. Pool nicht
so oft geniesen, wie in
den letzten Jahren.
Das Zelt kam frueher
als erwartet und war
schon ende August
aufgestellt.
Rolf Malthaner und
Mike Brasch mit ihren
Helfern, sind mit dem Aufbau beschaeftigt,
fuer das 47. Oktoberfest. Ende September ist
eine “Trade Show” gebucht, wie jedes Jahr,
doch sonstige Veranstaltungen wurden
schon vor Jahren abgesagt!
3
Alle Mitarbeiter und Freiwillige muessen
ein AODA-Training haben!! Sollten Sie
Arbeitsstelle anerkannt! Dieser Kurs wird
nach den Richtlinien des “Ontario Health
and Safety Act” durchgefuehrt!!!!
Besuchen Sie den 15. Pioneers Day am 14.
Oktober 2014 im Kitchener Rathaus. Der
Concordia Chor wird singen und die Enzian
Schuhplattler tanzen! Unterstuetzen Sie
geehrten!
Stiftungsfest (Geburtstag) des Concordia
Klubs findet am Samstag, 1. November in
der Halle statt. Eintrittskarten sind im
Klubbuero zu erhalten!
Die Narrenzunft eroeffnet den Fasching am
Samstag, 15.
Unterstuetzen Sie unsere Veranstaltungen!
Euer Praesident, Rob Kerr
President’s Report
Where did the summer go, did we ever get
it? This summer was very cool and wet and
our campers did not get to use the farm and
the pool as much as in the prior years.
The tent arrived earlier than expected this
year and was erected by the end of August.
This will allow the set up crew of Rolf
Malthaner, Mike Brasch and their crew to
start the process of setting up all the items
that need to be ready for our 47th Oktoberfest celebrations. We have a trade show
booked for the end of September similar to
previous years. We will not have any preOktoberfest events in the tent as the Rock
the Tent event was cancelled a few years
ago.
In keeping up with all the required government training that we need to do to be compliant, we will once again need to conduct
training sessions. All staff and volunteers
will need to have AODA training to be able
to properly help the disabled. If you went to
a training course last year you have been
trained and will not need to attend a ses-
sion. If you did not attend training last year
or are a new staff member or volunteer you
will need to attend a training session. These
training sessions will be set up through the
office personnel.
A new training element that everyone needs
is the Health and Safety awareness training.
This course can be taken either on line or by
attending a training session. If you have
taken this course at your work place and
have a certificate to verify your completion
of the course this will be accepted as well.
This training helps all employees or volunteers to know the basics of the Ontario
Health and Safety act.
Please plan on attending the 15th annual
German Pioneers Day celebrations at
Kitchener city hall on Tuesday, October
14th 2014. The Concordia Club has been
chosen as one of the groups to be honored
this year and we need to support this event
in order to show how proud we are of our
Club, our heritage and our cultural beliefs.
The choir will be singing for this event as
well as the Enzian Schuhplattlers will be
dancing.
The Concordia Club’s birthday (Stiftungfest)
will take place on Saturday, November 1st
in the main hall.
The Mardi Gras Society will celebrate their
grand opening on Saturday, November 15th
in the main hall.
The Remembrance Day ceremonies will take
place at Woodlawn Cemetery on Sunday,
November 16th.
Your attendance or help during the Oktoberfest celebrations is greatly appreciated as
we showcase our club for a large number of
guests that we normally do not see.
Your President, Rob Kerr

Oktoberfest
The event of the year
is just around the
corner! We have
been working very
hard in preparation
for another successful year. Our tickets
for the weekend
evenings have been
sold out for quite
some time.
The anticipation of the first Friday is very
exciting! A great night for friends and family to come out and enjoy the beginning of
the Thanksgiving weekend. The feeling of
Gemuetlichkeit is definitely in the air.
Our family days, Sunday and Monday, are
free of charge to members so please bring
along your membership cards. Our door
staff will need to see it to verify the free
admission! We love to see so many children
and grandchildren dressed in their lederhosen and dirndls learning the bird dance and
playing the games! A great family tradition
..... come and join in the fun!
Wednesday evening Walter Ostanek will be
playing with the Black Forest Band in the
tent. They always put on a great show.
Corporate Night, Thursday, is another very
popular evening for businesses to come and
entertain their staff and customers. Tickets
are still available for both evenings but
don’t wait too long to get them. Thursday
will sold out beforehand.
We will be hosting a number of corporate
events throughout the festival. As well as
hosting the Seniors Bus Tours during the
days on Tuesday and Wednesday we will
also be hosting a number of other private
events. On Wednesday evening we host
Passport to Success in the Main Hall, on
Thursday we host the Ontario IBEW in the
Main Hall for lunch, Chamberfest in the
Main Hall for dinner as well as Brock
Solutions in the Schenke. All of these
events help to contribute to the financial
success of Oktoberfest.
A.O.D.A. Training
As you may recall we had a number of training dates set up last year for the required
Accessability for Ontarians with Disabilities
Act (A.O.D.A.) for all staff and volunteers in
the booths.
This year is not any different. However, if
you completed the training last year, you

Workplace Health & Safety Awareness
Training
As of July 1st we are required by the provincial government to train all staff and supervisors in the Workplace Health & Safety
Awareness Act. This is for staff and supervisors only.....not volunteers.
If you have done this training with another
employer and can prove it by providing a
certificate of completion, you do not have to
participate in the training dates we have set
up. If you do not have it however, you are
required to take part in the sessions that we
will be hosting. I have listed a few options

Skat-Gruppe
fuer deine langjaehrige Unterstuetzung.
euch dazu bereiterklaert habt.
Der “Anne-Wolf Pokal” wird im September
ausgespielt. Der Bericht folgt im Oktober
Bulletin.
Der Silvester Pokal wird erstmals am 9ten
und am 16ten Dezember ausgespielt
Unsere Weihnachtsfeier wird am 7ten
Dezember in der Schenke stattfinden.
Nun wuensche ich allen Gruppen viel
Erfolg und allen Besuchern viel Spass beim
Oktoberfest.

SKAT GROUP
Summer is almost history and we hope that
Fall will bring us still a few nice days.
We regret that we have to say Good Bye to
our Skat member Gertud Frim who will
move up north for family related reasons.
Gertud was a director of the Skat group and
secretary, she was very dependable and always there when needed. She was always
very helpful to me as President. Thank You
Gertrud, we will miss you.
We also regret that Eddie Appelt resigned
from being a director due to health issues. A
big thank you to you for your long support.
As we are heading into Oktoberfest, we have
decided to nominate Marcus Kallweit and
Karl Braun as directors in our group. Thanks
to both of you that you have agreed so
promptly.
We will Play for the “Anne-Wolf” Pokal in
September and will report in the next bulletin.
Our Silvester Pokal will be played for this
year for the first time on December 9th and
16th. Our Christmas Party will be held on
December 7th in the Schenke.
I wish all groups a successful and all visitors a great time at Octoberfest

15:00 Uhr treffen. Ein Missverständnis. Also
1. Oktober um 14:30 Uhr im Klub. Eine alte

kommt ein scharfer Winter drein.

“OUR TRIP ALONG THE
ST. LAWRENCE”
Well the Ladies Group finally had their big
trip along the St. Lawrence River.
Our first day took us to the City of Kingston
where a local guide joined us for a tour of
Kingston “The Limestone City”. After the
tour we checked into the “Courtyard by
Marriott Hotel”. Later we went on an enjoyable evening Sunset Dinner Cruise.
On day two we made our way to Montreal.
There we had a walking tour in the center of
Old Montreal in order to get to the historic
Notre Dame Basilica. After the walking tour,
our tour continued by bus until the bus
stopped at the Hotel Le Cantlie Suites to
check in and have a quick change & drink to
fuel up. Later we went back to Old Montreal
and had a dinner at a lovely rustic steak
house.
Day three we departed for Old Quebec City
where we had lunch on our own before we
Great Canadian Tour friends
met up with our tour guide. Our tour consisted on foot & by bus. After our tour we
checked in at the hotel where we stayed for
two nights “Chateau Laurie”. Supper was
on our own, but there was a limitless
amount of restaurants just around the corner.
Day four was a very busy day. Our first destination was the Copper Art Museum,
Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre, Chez Marie’s
Bread Oven and Montmorency Falls. After
we could have lunch and free time in Old
Quebec City or some of us went to the city
market in lower Quebec. Later we departed
the hotel to have dinner in Ile d’Orleans at
an old stone mill that had been converted
into a restaurant.
On day five we departed the hotel at 8:00
am for our long journey home. With many
stops along the way, one stop was the Big
Apple where you could buy all the apple
pies you wanted. It was shortly after 8:30
pm that our bus rolled into the Concordia
Club parking lot.
All in all we had a great time on our beautiful trip of three very old cities.
Ladies at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre
Well Oktoberfest is almost upon us and we
hope that everyone will be able to make
8
their shifts as we are very few ladies at the
moment.
Also our Christmas Bazaar will soon be
upon us and we hope that everyone is busy
as a beaver working on their crafts, cookies
and cakes.
Wishing you all a happy Oktoberfest and
Thanksgiving.

LADIES GROUP 80TH ANNIVERSARY
As the Concordia Ladies Group celebrate their 80th Anniversary on October 4th, we honour our
beginnings in 1943 under the leadership of Frau Frida Spalinger of the Frauenverein. They undertook many small jobs, cooking and serving in banquets, feeding workers at farm clean-up, etc. Still
today, we organize and help fund the Children’s Christmas Party, craft and bake for the Christmas
Bazaar and co-run Miss Concordia with our Bockbierfest. We enjoy theatre and trips together, special dinners, presentations and “coffee and kuchen” at monthly meetings
Käthe Metzger and Lilo Grueneberg have been active members for over 50 years. Past presidents of
the Ladies include Erna, Lilo, Ingrid, Wilma and Lis, still active in our group.
Congratulations to all members of our small but vital group.

Concordia Chöre
Wir haben unsere Proben mit unserem
neuen Dirigenten Martin Anderle wieder
aufgenommen.
Fragen Sie mich jetzt
nicht, weil es mir niemand sagen will. Ich
weiß, dass das Datum der 13. September
war.
Am 20. September hatten wir auch unser
Winzerfest.
Lied Hoch, Andre Schilha
CONCORDIA CHOIRS
We have started our practices again with our
new conductor Martin Anderle.
On a sad note, one of our former long-time
choir members, Artur Beier, passed away on
August 27, 2014. Likely not many knew this
unless I wrote it before, but Art was the one
who designed and built the white/red pins
for the Wurfbude. They are still used today
and set up hundreds of times during
Oktoberfest.
The funeral was held on Thursday, September 4 with the Male Choir singing, conducted by Martin.
10
Our famous Choir picnic took place on
August 16, 2014. It will be remembered as
one in which rain stopped most activities!
The Silent Auction was brought into the
pavilion, however the Wurfbude and the
children’s games did not take place. Maybe
there will be more anticipation for next
year!
We’ll have taken our Fahrt Ins Blaue by the
time you read this...and I’ll have known
where we went! Don’t ask me now because
it seems like nobody wants to tell me.
CONCORDIA CHOIRS
WELCOME NEW CONDUCTOR
The Concordia Choirs are pleased to announce that Martin Anderle has accepted the position of full-time conductor.
He will commence his duties on August
11
I know the date was September 13.
We also had our Winzerfest September 20. I
was the MC and the outgoing Weinkoenigen
was Kyla Pfister. Thank you Erika Koeckritz
for making the sash! Hopefully you all had
fun dancing and eating grapes!
Oktoberfest is near! Always lots to do and
help is always needed.
Bis naechstes Mal!
Lied Hoch, Andre Schilha
18th, 2014. Martin comes to us with a
very impressive background in choral
conducting. In Germany, he conducted
performances with members of the
Munich Radio Orchestra and the
Augsburg Philharmonic. Martin studied
at the University of Music, Vienna as
well as the University of Music
“Mozarteum”, Salzburg. Martin has a
Masters degree in both music and organ
performance. He is currently the music
director at Dublin Street United Church
in Guelph. Before moving to Ontario, he
directed the Langley Community Choir.
Martin is also a registered piano teacher
in the province of Ontario. Martin is a
very positive and energetic conductor
who seeks to bring out the very best in
each of his singers. We all look forward
to working with him and to begin our
musical journey together. We would also
like to take this opportunity to encourage
all those who love to sing to join our
choir. We practise every Monday at the
Concordia Club beginning at 7:15pm.
You will be warmly welcomed. Come
and join us!

With the approach of Thanksgiving and

family and club functions.
In September, Edith planned a visit to

delayed a week to organize with the nursery

We return to normal schedules in November. Edith will let us know by phone.

out for a lovely trail ride at Conestogo
Horseback Adventures followed by a delicious BBQ lunch and some refreshments.
We had a nice day for our Annual Meeting &
Corn Roast on Sunday, August 24th with
about 30 people in attendance. We would
like to welcome Alf Herzing to our 2014/
2015 Committee, thanks for joining us!

We are still looking to fill many shifts at our
Oktoberfest Booth - as everyone knows, the
shooting booth is one of the biggest in the
tent and we need lots of volunteers to fill it
– this is our only way of providing funds for
the survival of our group! Please contact
Jesse Turner 519-841-4905 to sign up for a
shift or two – it’s a lot of fun!
Our group Christmas Party is tentatively
booked for Sunday, November 30th – more
details in the next bulletin.

Eis Stock-Group
Good Day to all of you,
The fourth tournament of our Ontario Open
Club Masters 2014, hosted by the Kingston
& Area Ice Stock Club on Sunday, August 17.,
looked already promising during the organisation phase, 8 teams advised their appearance. Hotels had to be booked due to the fact
that the club is the furthest away.
All the Teams arrived on Saturday, some
using the afternoon for sight-seeing others
for a little fishing trip while visiting
Friends. At night we came together Downtown Kingston at Amadeus Café, a Euro-
pean Restaurant and Bastion of Alpine Tradition.
The Guestroom was prepared for us with a
special menu of treats from overseas like
Kaes-Spaetzle or Beef-Rouladen even Hungarian Gulasch was offered, this all was
toped by a Dessert most of us still dream of.
The Kingston Guys could not sit quiet as the
Accordeon player started on her Instrument,
a Plattler-dance for good half an hour
dropped the chin of most of our Canadian
fellow Athletes. Considering the Age of
nearly 80 years of some dancers they just
kept on going.
The mood was accordingly, so it’s fair to say
that we were the last guests and turned the
Keys as we left.

The next Day at the tournament we had to
juggle a little around to complete the
Cambridge Team which just arrived with
two players, but uncomplicated help was
offered by the Concordia Group which
would have otherwise played with two
teams. The Bayern Club, the Concordia
Group and Cambridge started with one team
each, the big surprise though was Kingston
appearing with 5 Teams. What a success
that is, thanks to Karl Hammer jr. and his
effort to revive the sport in his Area, even
the Press was informed and Locals showed
up to see what Icestock Sport means.
The Tournament proofed to be such fun that
some teams didn’t even care what the standings are, they had just been infected with
the Icestock fever, unfortunately we could
play only one round losing out on time and
decided to play a final round between the
two leading teams with 12 pts each and a
small final for 3rd place between the next
two teams with 10 and 9 pts.
The final results are:
1.Cambridge Icestock Club, consisting of:
Ryan, Luca, Wolfgang and Alexa
2.Kingston & Area ISC 1, consisting of: Bill,
Helen, Taylor and Andy
3.Concordia Group, consisting of: Milutin,
Kata, Novica and Steve
4.Kingston & Area ISC 2, consisting of:
Walter, Karl sr., Dylon and Eric
5.Bayern Club, consisting of: Jennifer, Jim,
Stefi, Brad and Helmuth as spare
6.Kingston & Area ISC 3, consisting of:
Ingrid, Gerhard, Jason, Matt
7.Kingston & Area ISC 4, consisting of: Bert,
Normand, Erich and Raymond
8.Kingston & Area ISC 5, consisting of: Karl
jr., Michelle, Tasha and Chris

We played just with a short break inbetween
as the event was so organized that there
were food and drinks served on the go, with
Burgers, Sausages, Coffee and Pop, as well
Cup-cakes as dessert all sponsored by Club
members of different areas, another example
of the cameradery in between stock sport
enthusiast and friends.
Sport brings People together and combines
all ages and genders in a fascinating way,
the children as well were kept busy as
Latt’l-shooting was set up on the sideline.
Sunshine pure rounded up a fantastic weekend of Icestock celebration as new Friendships were made and hopefully carried on
for the future.
In this sense we look forward to our next
Tournament hosted by the Cambridge Icestock Club on Sunday, September 14.

Treffpunkt
As I write this, 18 of the Treffpunkt group
arrived home today from a fantastic weekend together in the Port Colborne area for
our annual cottage weekend. We had beautiful early September weather. Everyone
pitched in to help make the weekend a
memorable one. On Saturday afternoon we
took some time to have a meeting to discuss
upcoming events. Most important on our
topics of discussion was Oktoberfest. Most
group members have signed up for a few
shifts to help run our dunk tank. There are
still a few remaining spots open which need
to be filled. Each year we make necessary
improvements to keep the dunk tank in
good working order and this year is no
exception.
We look forward to Winzerfest and celebrating this time of year with our fellow club
members. It is always a wonderful evening
dressing in our best Tracht and watching the
crowning of our new Weinkonigin.
As always we continue to donate blood. If
you can donate, please do. Our partners in
life number is CONC010846.
Till next time,
Andrea Schilha
