Ihr Präsident, Rob Kerr President’s Report Thank you to all the membership for supporting the board of directors and myself this past year. I must also say thank you to all the people who attended the annual general meeting and showed with their votes that the leadership that I have given in the past year was both what they wanted and is going in the direction that the members of the Concordia Club would like to see. I promise to lead this next year with the same passion and integrity that I brought forward in my first year and keep the club moving in the right direction. Janice and I are very happy to be able to represent so many great people as we attend events on behalf of you and the Concordia Club. We will however need to take some time away as we will become first time Grandparents in the late summer. I would like to welcome Mike Matich to the board of directors for 2015. Mike’s many years with the club and his business background will strengthen our board. We also welcome back Sarah Fretz, Peter Bergen, Elaine Keller, Marcus Kallweit and Ali Nowak to serve you for another term on the board. On a sad note, we must say goodbye to Martin Patzold. Martin your dedication to the tasks at hand and professionalism when performing your duties will be missed. I would also like to say thank you to Ruth Rajna, Martina Koslowski and Chef Andreas and the staff for their daily care and attention to detail when dealing with our guests. KG Narrenzunft Concordia Hello to Concordia Club Members and Friends, The Narrenzunft Group’s 48th season has come to an end but it was a great one! Highlights of this season were as follows: Oktoberfest Pretzel Booth, Narrenzunft’s 48th Stifftungsfest (Anniversary) on Oct. 25th, Opening Ceremonies of the 2014/2015 Mardi Gras Season November 15th, Christmas Party on December 9th in the Jägerstube and the last event was the Maskenball/Closing Ceremonies on February 14th. Please send all Group reports to [email protected] Please have your reports submitted by the 8th of the month. If the 8th falls on a weekend, have your reports in by the following Tuesday. If you have any questions, you can contact me directly. I look forward to working with you, Elaine Keller formed both Garde and Show dances. Funke Hayleigh did an amazing job on her solo performance. It has been many years since The Narrenzunft has had a Kinder Garde and we were very proud of the 7 new girls who danced for the first time in front of an audience. Way to go!!! Peter Trautrim guided us through the evening as M.C. and Princess Karin & Prince Manfred von Ostfriesland delightfully oversaw the events. The fun of the season came to an end therefore we sadly buried our Hoppeditz. We can’t wait to wake him in November to start the 2015/2016 Mardi Gras season! A special thanks goes to all of the Narrenzunft members, if it wasn’t for our team work this season wouldn’t have turned out as good as it did!! If anyone would like to join the Narrenzunft please don’t hesitate to call and we can answer any questions you may have. 519-886-6009. Until the next time. Vielen Dank! Lied hoch, Andre Schilha CONCORDIA CHOIRS Our AGM was Monday, January 26th. We don’t have any changes to the choir board, so we are ready to continue! Thus our new Choir board consists of (in semi-important order, since we still have to decide on roles): Helmut Kruschat - President Ulrike Ryzebol - Vice President Fred Trautrim - Treasurer Tanya Rahn-Kubasta - 1st Secretary Andre Schilha - 2nd Secretary Nick Zeis - Director Siegfried Schranz - Director Mary Mehnert - Director Bev Gottvald - Director with some 2nd Secretary duties Marilyn Bleach - Director Ilse Gessner - Director We should be having a trip in 2016 to Germany and preparations are being made for it. It will be an exciting trip to Amsterdam, Dresden and Berlin among some other smaller cities. However, we need to be ‘singfaehig’, in other words, have a full enough choir to sing. We will know for sure once the initial installments have been made. There is a new time for our Spring Concert, always the first Sunday in May. It will start at 7pm, not the normal 7:30pm. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Upcoming dates: March 28: President’s Ball, Mixed Choir sings May 3: Spring concert, in Hall – concert starts at 7:00pm This will be my last Choir Bulletin as the task has been (most likely) reassigned to Bev Gottvald. Bev is quite articulate and will provide some new insight into all the choir happenings. I have truly enjoyed writing for all of my readers! Thank you so much! Michalski On November 9th 2014, the German people commemorated the 25th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This historic event, a milestone in recent German history, initiated by the East German people paved the way for German reunification on October 3rd 1990. The consequences of the Second World War resulted in the division of Germany in West and East Germany for more than four decades. Only after November 9th 1989 were most citizens of the two German states able to get acquainted with the other half of the country. As a result, West Germans arrived by the thousands to visit the reunited city of Berlin, or Leipzig, the birthplace of the “Mondaydemonstrations”; Dresden, one of the most beautiful cities in eastern Germany, also called the “Florence on the River Elbe”. Let us follow this path and visit the places we could not go for so long because of the infamous “Iron Curtain”. We begin our journey through the cities of former East Germany starting in Berlin, the old and new capital. Since the Berlin Wall was torn down in 1989, the metropolis on the River Spree -with a population of about 3.6 million- has become a symbol of 21st-century urbanity, attracting artists, scientists, and architects from all over the world. The Potsdamer Platz, during the Cold War an empty “no-man’s-land” between the East and West sectors, has been developed into the short period of a few years in a modern business district. The Kurfuerstendamm, Berlin’s popular boulevard with its many theaters, cabarets and cafes, is shining even brighter than in the so called “Golden Twenties”. Furthermore, the historic buildings of the State Library, the Humboldt University and Staatsoper along the boulevard Unter den Linden and the Museumsinsel with its many museums and galleries justify Berlin’s claim to be the cultural center of Germany. Berlin Originals and memories of “old Berlin”: The character of Berliners is difficult to determine. According to statistical sources, Berliners are an ethnographical mix of almost equal parts Germanic, Slavic and Romanesque origins. From this mixture emerged the peculiar archetype of the Berliners, which combines all the good and bad qualities of the different nationalities, races and tribes as they evolved over time. Berliners exhibit a strong selfconfidence, and their quick-witted urban humor and good natured bluntness is often referred to as “Berliner Schnauze” or “Berliner big mouth”. Memories of “old Berlin” take us back to songs interpreted in the typical impudent Berlin dialect by Walter Kollo or Bully Buhlan. Who does not remember the amusing melodies of “Das war in Schoeneberg im Monat Mai”, “Im Grunewald ist Holzauktion”, “In Rixdorf ist Musike”, “Da sitz’ ick mit de Emma uf de Banke”, “Lieber 16 Barristers & Solicitors, Notaries Public Suite 604, 30 Duke Street, W. Heinrich Zille (1858-1929), a famous Berlin illustrator and photographer became best known for his sketches and drawings that captured people’s typical characteristics and stereotypes. Zille was the first to portray the desperate social environment of Berlin’s Mietskasernen (“tenement barracks”) in his illustrated book “Mein Milljoeh” (My milieu/social environment) published in 1910. Another story: “Der Hauptmann von Koepenick” (The Captain of Koepenick) is a satirical play by the German author Carl Zuckmayer. Based on a true event that happened in 1906 the play tells the story of Wilhelm Voigt, a down-on-his-luck ex-convict shoemaker, who impersonated a Prussian Guards officer, rounded up a number of soldiers from the street under his command, held the mayor of the small town of Koepenick at ransom, and “confiscated” about 4,000 Marks from the municipal treasury, which was handed over to him voluntarily. Wilhelm Voigt was successful, claiming that he has done so in the name of the Kaiser. The Prussian cult of the uniform ensured that the townspeople were 17 all-too willing to obey his orders. Zuckmayer described the story as a “German fairy tale”. Typical food and drink of Berlin: Visiting Berlin everybody should try the typical wheat beer called “Berliner Weisse”. Its invention is dating back to the 16th century. It is served with flavoured syrups such as Himbeersirup” or (raspberry) or “Waldmeister” (artificial woodruff) in a bowl-shaped glass. Ordering a glass of beer the Berliner calls for a “Molle”. Brewing beer has a long history in Berlin. In the early 17th century King Frederick William, father of Frederick the Great, encouraged the spread of beer throughout Prussia, declaring it as “best drink for our climate”. Nice reasoning, isn’t it? A popular story goes that after invading Prussia in 1809 Napoleon’s troops dubbed it “The champagne of the North”. If it comes to typical Berlin dishes the “Currywurst”, “Eisbein” or “Pork knuckle”, and the “Berliner Pfannkuchen”, a jelly-filled donut, come to mind. On New Year’s Eve, Berliners have this great tradition of putting one mustard-filled donut in among the pile of “jellies”; the lucky recipient supposedly gets good fortune for the following year. 18 Tischtennis Gruppe Dieser Bericht bestaetigt die Ausnahme zur Regel, da er diesmal sehr kurz ausfaellt. Our first social event of the year is not that far away! The Spring Picnic and Soccer tournament is Saturday, June 6th, followed by the Campers Semi-Annual meeting on June 7th. More details in the May and June Nachrichten. A few reminders to the Campers: • Please keep your vehicles on the roads, until the ground has dried, and will support the weight. • Your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be in working condition, and have fresh batteries . • If your refrigerator(s) was left “on” in the fall, please unplug, or turn off before the hydro is turned on. (Hydro and water will be on for Farm Cleanup, possibly the week prior) • Water MAY NOT be connected to your trailer. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the 26th! Bruce Emmerson, on behalf of the Campers Committee Outdoor Group Thanks to everyone who braved the deep snow, and came out to Winter Karneval! Once again, a great time was had by all! As winter finally has come to an end, we took advantage of the outdoors and beautiful winter setting at the Concordia Farm. Our Winter Carnival was a great success! Rides on snow machines brought smiles to faces making you forget about this treacherous weather. Potato pancakes and pea soup hit the spot as we warm up by the fire at the home on the range. Thank you for the amazing efforts of the ODG committee, making winter carnival so memorable and enjoyable this year! Special thanks to Kyle Huschka, Tom Huschka, Tom Bews, Harry Beyerle, for providing transportation. Please recognize the countless hours and efforts of Sharon Matich and her wonderful cooking. Your pea soup rocked my socks!! Next up for the Outdoor Group is our annual Home on the Range Clean up on April 25th, 9am.
