Location
Istanbul liegt im Westen der Türkei sowohl auf der europäischen als auch auf der asiatischen Seite des Bosporus.
Das Goldene Horn, eine längliche Bucht im Bosporus,
trennt den europäischen Teil in einen südlichen und
­einen nördlichen Bereich. Der südliche Teil ist eine zwischen Marmarameer und Goldenem Horn liegende Halbinsel mit dem historischen Stadtviertel Sultanahmet.
Istanbul is situated in the west of Turkey on both sides of the
Bosphorus – on the European and the Asian banks. The
Golden Horn, a longish inlet in the Bosphorus, splits the
Euro­pean section into a southern and a northern district.
The southern part forms a peninsula between the Sea of
Marmara and the Golden Horn and contains the historic
Sultanahmet district.

Religions
Der grösste Teil der Bevölkerung bekennt sich zum Islam.
Doch noch zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts waren ein
gros­ser Teil der Einwohner Nichtmuslime, zu denen die
griechisch-orthodoxen Christen, die syrisch-orthodoxen
Aramäer, die armenischen Christen und die Sepharden
gehörten. Neben islamischen Moscheen gibt es daher in
Istanbul auch christliche Kirchen und Synagogen, wie
zum Beispiel die bulgarisch-orthodoxe Basilika Sankt
Stefan am Goldenen Horn.
The majority of Istanbul’s population today are Muslim. Yet
at the beginning of the 20th century, a large number of the
city’s inhabitants were not Muslim and included Greek-­
Orthodox Christians, Syriac-Orthodox Arameans, Armen­
ian Christians and Sephardi. Nowadays Istanbul also has a
number of synagogues and Christian churches in addition
to its Islamic mosques. Among these are the Bulgarian-­
Orthodox basilica of St Stephen on the shore of the Golden
Horn.

restaurant right on the Bos­
phorus with a terrace and magnificent view of the bridge. The
tasty mezes, tiny Turkish appetizers, are not chosen from the
menu but from a variety presented on trays, while the fish is
picked from the selection on display. The cooking is heavenly, the
service oozes old-world friendliness and guests have the chance
to get to know locals. Not really a
place for meat lovers though!

experience. It’s incredible to

on down there. Fish caught from
the bridge is prepared beneath

die Mandeln von Hand geschält.» So sind denn auch die

Ever since 1904, this familyrun company has been selling
the best marzipan in Turkey.
The “badem ezmesi” (“famous
almond paste”) is not as sweet
as the marzipan we are accustomed to in northern Europe.
“As children, we used to have
competitions in shelling the almonds,” recalls current proprietor Sevim Hanim, “and
even today the almonds are still
shelled by hand.” And this is reflected in the price of the “badem ezmesi”. The other sweetmeats on offer are also well
worth trying!

is the title of a 2008 novel by
Turkish author and Nobel literature laureate Orhan Pamuk. The
­museum was opened in 2012.
From the 4,213 cigarette butts
that the novel’s heroine Füsun
smokes over the course of
hundreds of pages, right down to
the perfectly furnished bedroom
of the main character Kemal,
the couple’s unique love story is
­documented in the 83 display
cases of this enchanting museum
– which represent the 83 chapters of the novel.
