The grand total came to: $1,551 Before that they nurtured the basket gardens we sold at the Whole Bloomin’ Thing. THANK YOU! AFTER 57 YEARS HAYWOOD SPAY/NEUTER CELEBRATES A GRAND OPENING It took hundreds of hours and volunteers working and caring for years to bring us to the day when over 80 people enjoyed food, drink, music, and fun to celebrate our grand opening. According to executive director, Penny Wallace, “This organization has been working in this community on behalf of animal welfare for 57 years and finally we’re holding a grand opening.” Waynesville Mayor Gavin Brown added, “It is events such as this within our community that make being mayor worthwhile, (because) they make all our lives better and I am pleased that Waynesville was chosen as Haywood Spay/Neuter’s home base.” Board President, Connie Hewitt, “We must now continue to move forward improving animal and people-topeople relationships to succeed in eliminating animal cruelty and euthanasia in our county. To make this happen we need the help of the entire community and this will always be true” Our new location allows Haywood Spay/Neuter staff and volunteers to work more effectively as a team and provides a central location for their initiatives. ANOTHER STEP FORWARD! A VAN FOR TNR Cruuunch! It was a very devastating sound to Susan Kumpf, Haywood Spay/Neuter’s TrapNeuter and Return Coordinator. She was in ol’ Betsy waiting to turn onto Leicester Highway after another Human Alliance drop-off of the previous evening’s successful cat trapping. The oxygen delivery truck in front of her suddenly backed up to let a large semi-trailer turn onto the road. Susan had no time to react. Cruuunch! Susan had kept Betsy going with lots of repairs out of her own pocket for the 5 day a week round-trips to Asheville with the TNR cats. But this was Betsy’s last trip – she was totaled. With insurance money and savings, Susan purchased a more fuel efficient 2007 Dodge Journey and went back to trapping. However, only 7 traps fit comfortably for the cats – a disappointment. Susan found herself going back and forth picking up more traps for a night’s outing. “This is not going to work,” she realized. Problem: — Completing the PetSmart Charities grant must be accomplished by the end of the year. Question —What can we do? Answer — Replace the van. A plea went out, a few kind donors responded, but time was of the essence. We needed an all-wheel drive van to negotiate rough roads with low mileage enough space to hold 20 traps and travel 20,000 miles per year. With due diligence we found one for a total cost of $18,000. The PetSmart Charities Grant was saved! GIVE A SPAY/NEUTER GIFT FOR THE HOLIDAYS IN HONOR OF SOMEONE SPECIAL. ! December 21 Haywood Spay/Neuter closed for holidays January 2013! Haywood Spay/Neuter reopens SAVE A CAT! VOLUNTEER FOR TNR! We still need donations to pay for this step forward. AWD vehicles are hard on gas, especially with all the stop and go involved in the TNR process. Insurance, gas and maintenance now need to be budgeted for 2013. Your gift to help this project, will save the lives of cats, reduce the number of stray cats entering the shelter; reduce euthanasia and the numbers of feral cats born in Haywood County. Won’t you make a donation in memory of “ol’ Betsy”. FYI — As of 8/31, the TNR Team has trapped 543 community cats. The goal for 2012 is 800! 20 TRAPS FIT! Page 3 Haywood Spay/Neuter Fall Issue 2012 Fall Fix Is In! DOGS OR CATS! Fix by 5 months old. No litters, no caterwauling, better behavior and less wandering are the results. You save money, time, aggravation and your neighbors will love you. Last year’s $10 Special fixed 914 pets, so we’re doing it again! If pets are fixed in the fall there will be no spring surprise litters! Only $10 and no limit on the number of pets per family. Benefits? No more unwanted litters! Your pets will have better long-term health. Pets are better behaved. Fewer unwanted animals get turned into the shelter. The significantly lower shelter intake we’ve seen so far this year proves that widespread spay/neuter works. We are certain the 2,308 low-cost surgeries provided in 2011 contributed to the downturn. We are positive this event will have a major impact on shelter intake numbers for puppies and kittens next year since we expect to complete 2,000 plus surgeries before the end of 2012. We are somewhat nervous about the added expense, but with your continued help we can keep providing low-cost spay/neuter surgeries. A gift of $40 will cover the individual surgery subsidy we will be providing during this event. A regular monthly gift of $10 or more will be a BIG help in many ways.
