June 18—Nature Play Day By Dawn Van Deman, EDC Manager—Hello volunteers! Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful spring! We’re busy making preparations for summer, and one of our events at the Earth Discovery Center is going to be a Nature Play Day, Saturday June 18th. Nature Play Days are sponsored by the Indiana Children and Nature Network, and encourage kids and families to get outside and have fun in nature during the week of June 11-June 19. That is a super busy week for us, but we’d like to have some simple, ongoing activities at the EDC that Saturday. I’m looking for folks to lead nature hikes and monitor pond scooping throughout the day. Keep in mind, since these would be free walk-in programs, there could be anywhere from no one at all to lots and lots of visitors showing up (depends a lot on the weather), and afternoons are likely to be busier than mornings. I’ve got a sign-up sheet in the blue notebook at the EDC front desk, or feel free to email me ([email protected]) with the time and activity you’d like to help with. We love watching kids and families getting outside and having fun! By Jenna McElroy, OC Naturalist—The OC will also need volunteers. To volunteer at the OC, please contact me by email ([email protected]) or phone (317-327-BIRD) or come into Invasive Species Strike Team with Brenthe OC to sign up! da Howard on 5-14-16 Page 2 Eagle Creek Park Volunteer News June 2016 Sun 5 IDNR Free Mon Tue 6 7 Fishing Day Thu 1:30 FT 2:30 FF 12 Dulcimer F 13 10 Family 14 Fishing & Birdwatching 4FreeFishng Dy 9:30 Gardeners 4 Meet a Raptor 8 Fishing Derby 4 Meet a Raptor 1:30 N D 2:30 FF 6:30 Concert Night Marathon 8 9 10 11 Triathlon 4 Meet a Raptor Dulcimer Festival 4 Meet a Raptor Garden Tour 6:30 Concert 1:30 N D 2:30 FF 15 16 9 Gardeners 4 Meet a Raptor 2:30 Feathrd Fun 6:30 Concert 21 Sat 3 1:30 Feeding time 19 9 Birdwalk 20 Fri 1 8:30 Coffee 2 9 Gardeners 9 Birdwalk 9 Birdwalk Wed 22 1:30 Feeding time 9 Gardeners 2:30 Feathrd Fun 4 Meet a Raptor 17 4 Meet a Raptor 18 10 Nature Play Day 1:30 Nature Disc 2:30 Feathrd Fun 23 24 25 4 Meet a Raptor 1:30 Nature Disc 2:30 Feathrd Fun 6:30 Concert 26 1/2 Mara- 27 thon 9 Birdwalk 28 29 30 9 Gardeners 1:30 Feeding time 4 Meet a Raptor 2:30 Feathrd Fun 6:30 Concert Coffee Talk Wednesday, June 1, 8:30 am, EDC Brenda Howard, Senior Ecologist, DPW-Land Stewardship "Taking Care of Nature: Natural Areas Management at Eagle Creek Park" With hundreds of acres of natural area within the park, how do we preserve and restore these precious resources? Last year, the race raised $7,800. The race takes athletes of all ages on a 2.5-mile trail run, 1.5-mile paddle in a kayak or canoe, then 3.5-mile trail run through the east side of the park. The format mimics a Figure 8, and will utilize the beach as a central hub and transition area - a spot where spectators can cheer on racers.
