The City of Detroit is going to be broke in a few months unless Mayor Dave Bing moves faster and more aggressively to restructure city services, the joint city-state financial advisory board warned Monday. Expressing frustration at the slow pace of reform, the board said that six months into state oversight, too many measures meant to stave off bankruptcy are moving too slowly, including restructuring the police and fire departments and the bus system, improving tax collections and saving money with pay cuts and reductions in health care and retiree benefits. “At the present pace, I think the city is going to run out of money” before it can implement changes needed to avoid even worse financial trouble, board member Ken Whipple, a former CEO of Consumers Energy, told members of Bing’s administration at the financial board’s ALDS GAME 3: DETROIT VS. OAKLAND, monthly meeting at Wayne 9:07 TONIGHT, TBS State University. Whipple said he recently observed operations at the city’s bus system and public lighting department and saw “pockets of brilliance in a sea of disastrous KATHLEEN GALLIGAN/DETROIT FREE PRESS work practices.” OAKLAND UNIVERSITY RALLY: Kid Rock introduces Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan to cheers Monday night.
