Benefits of Summer It’s natural to eat lighter in the summer and finding fresh fruits and vegetables is the benefit of the season. When I see the first signs of spring in my local natural foods store, my entire body relaxes as I breathe deeper, enjoying the promises of warmth and daydreaming of my many, many, upcoming picnics by the lake. During the month of July our gardens are in full swing, tomatoes are ripening and peas are climbing and flowering. So which fruits and vegetables are best in July and why should we consume them? • Cantaloupe can help control your blood pressure. Packed with potassium, 1 cup meets about 10% of your daily potassium needs. (Watermelon contains about half that of cantaloupe.) • Peaches are originally a product of China and are still a sign of immortality. They can help fight diabetes and cardiovascular disease and are often used in moisturizers and other skin care products because of their high Vitamin A & C content, which helps skin revitalization. • Summer Squash can improve your vision. Really? I thought that was carrots. Actually summer squash has high concentrations of beta-carotene and lutein and lutein is what assists in preventing cataracts and vision degeneration. • Kiwi is a lower glycemic fruit and because of this diabetics safely consume it. In addition, kiwi is high in fiber, aiding in natural digestive health. • Tomatoes are filled with lycopene, a nutrient known to be a powerful antioxidant that protects against heart disease. But don’t take my word for it…try something fresh and new at your local and organic food store! Other fruits and vegetables that peak in July: Watermelon, Strawberries, Blueberries, Apricots, Raspberries, Plums, Cucumbers, Corn, Green Beans and Lettuce. 6-7 oz Prices & varieties may vary by location. Why Independent Matters Do your community’s parks need cleaning? Do your neighbors need new jobs after months of unemployment? Does your son’s soccer team need a local sponsor to donate uniforms? If so, then you need independent businesses. Locally owned independent businesses – including your favorite natural food retailer – return money to the local economy, create local jobs, and support local causes. They beautify communities by creating walkable town centers with unique storefronts and warm welcomes. They preserve the environment by reducing urban sprawl and sourcing items locally. They serve the community before, during, and after business hours. The owners of these independent businesses live and work in the community, keeping them in touch with the needs of their customers and neighbors. They are personally invested in the community because it is both their place of business and their home. Take a look at what these individuals and their businesses bring to communities across the country, including yours: • Small businesses accounted for 65 percent of all net new jobs over the past 17 years. • Small businesses currently employ 77 million Americans. • Independent retailers return more than three times as much money per dollar of sales to the local economy than chain stores. • If every family in the country spent $10 a month at local businesses, more than $9.3 billion would be returned to local economies. Sources: Small Business Administration; Civic Economics; American Booksellers Association The small, independent businesses in your community can make a big difference. You can support your community by visiting local stores, local restaurants, and local farmers’ markets whenever possible. When you have a great experience at one of these businesses, tell your friends and spread the ‘buy local’ message throughout the community. Independent We Stand brings consumers and businesses together to increase awareness of the benefits of buying local. Raw Probiotics Women $ 34 99 90 ct Natural Medicines – Eases Pain without Complications By Caroline Gustavsson Adlercreutz Pain affects more than 30% of people in the U.S., which is more than heart disease, diabetes and cancer combined. The most common types of pain includes joint, muscle and back pain. If you suffer from back, joint or muscle pain, take note. Due to the risks associated with common pain relief treatments – including over-the-counter NSAIDs like ibuprofen, which can put patients at a higher risk for drug interactions and complications – natural medicines and therapies are becoming more widely used to treat common forms of pain. In fact, nearly 40 percent of adults use these types of natural medicines and alternative remedies, and more doctors are using them too, by combining them with traditional treatments for pain, as part of Aconitum Napellus, a type of natural ingredient found in the practice of integrative medicine. medicines that reduces minor joint and back pain. Let’s examine the benefits and research of an ointment called Traumeel. In a recent study presented at the European League Against Rheumatism conference and published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, Traumeel’s effectiveness was verified in a clinical study “TAASS” in Spain. Traumeel topical has not been associated with the type of side effects linked with NSAID use, like increased risk of ulcers and stomach bleeding, and is safe to use for more than 10 days. A leading Osteopathic physician, Dr. Steven Sampson, says that Traumeel, which includes 12 natural ingredients found in nature, may help with pain relief of minor muscle, joint and back pain. What are other forms of alternative treatments and medicines to relieve joint, back and muscle pain? Dr. Sampson suggests acupuncture and massage can promote good blood flow and circulation, which aids in healing. However depending on the nature of injury, these treatments may complement a more comprehensive plan. Gentle exercises like pilates, yoga, tai chi and indoor swimming also promote movement and postural stability, which can help make you feel better, and these types of exercises can be customized based on your needs. What does this mean for those suffering from joint, muscle and back pain? Dr. Sampson suggests that with an epidemic of increased disease upon us, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, we need to rely more on natural based solutions that help patients with their pain, instead of invasive treatments, harmful NSAIDs and steroids. Visit www.orthohealing.com and www.traumeel.us, for more information on alternative medicines and therapies. Dr. Steven Sampson, D.O. is an internationally recognized expert in non-surgical orthopedics and regenerative medicine and commonly treats professional and Olympic athletes. He is also a clinical instructor of medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and on staff at St. John’s Health Center of Santa Monica, CA. Prices & varieties may vary by location.
