Winter - Friends of the Millbrae Library
FRIENDS OF THE MILLBRAE LIBRARY • News FML VOL. 33 NR. 1 MILLBRAE, CALIFORNIA WINTER 2012 http://www.MillbraeLibraryFriends.org THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER As we look forward to a new year, we cannot help but also reflect on the past year's events and accomplishments. December 6th marked the Millbrae Library's 7th birthday celebration. A festive Open House showcased the enhancements in the Children's Room – the bright, new murals, new seating, shelving, and signage. Hard-working board members staffed the membership table recruiting new members, sold raffle tickets for Children's Room book spine tiles, and served refreshments. A special thank you goes to Millbrae's Peet's Coffee for the donation of their delicious Holiday Blend, a perfect complement to the cookies served. The “Carnival of Chaos”, starring the popular comedy duo of Mark and Dre entertained everyone with their sleight-of-hand tricks and hilarious juggling acts. We are grateful to Library staff and Board members who all helped in making this a truly successful event. Speaking of Board members, a special recognition goes to Bernie Esser, who leaves the FML Board after many years of service. The Friends have selected the book Tales from the San Francisco Giants' Dugout: A Collection of the Greatest Giants Stories Ever Told by Nick Peters, to be donated to the Millbrae Library in his honor. In January, we also welcome new board member Marilyn Musante, who has been a regular helper at the FML Bookstore. An important function of the Friends is advocating for our Library through public awareness within the community. Representatives from the Board of FML recently participated at a City Council meeting when a Naming Policy for City Facilities was being proposed, specifically for the Library's program rooms. Members requested that in establishing the naming policy, the city consider community input prior to the voting process. On behalf of its members, the FML Board drafted a letter to the City Council recommending that the individual nominated shall have made exceptional contributions and services directly to/and for the benefit of the Millbrae Library. In addition, the FML Board of Directors should have the opportunity to review the nominations prior to the Council vote. The beginning of the year is also a good time to remember to renew your membership, as well as getting friends and neighbors to join our organization. Your support goes a long way towards augmenting the Library's funding for equipment, materials, as well as many quality programs for all ages. Help keep the Millbrae Library the community's most innovative and premier destination! In Memoriam Volunteer extraordinaire and library supporter, Dick Billman passed away on December 27, 2011. Dick was not only a member of the Friends of the Millbrae Library; he was also a library aide for many years. Dick was at the library every week shelving books and working in the staff room. He helped at every book sale. The library staff and the Friends will miss Dick’s friendly smile and efficient assistance. The library was filled with excited children and adults who came to see the newly renovated Children’s Room, the new market area, and to be entertained by the Carnival of Chaos. Mark Schatz, the library’s architect and Anne Marie Despain, San Mateo County Library Director, who helped plan the new renovations, were there for the celebration. As you’ve probably noticed, the Accounts Desk is gone. In its place there are attractive displays of new books in the Market Area. The Reference Desk is now large enough to accommodate two librarians for all patrons’ needs. The new check-out machines allow checking out up to three books at a time. These improvements were made possible by the San Mateo County Library. The Homework Center now has blackout shades so films can be shown. Colorful murals by Evans and Brown, dangling butterflies, new book displays, and an expanded Toddlers area delight the hundreds of children who come to the library each week. The Friends of the Millbrae Library donated $140,000 for these improvements. Children’s librarian, Ginny McLain, arranged for the Carnival of Chaos, featuring Mark and Dre who kept us entertained with juggling, accordion playing, and lots of audience participation. Peet’s Coffees and Teas donated and served the coffee and the Friends provided the cookies. Ana Maria Guevarra won the Book Spine Tile raffle to the delight of her children, Julian and Gabriel, whose names will be in the Children’s Room of the library.
