DUE DATE: Friday, September 5, 2014 or Friday, September 12, 2014
OVERVIEW:

You will be required to read ONE book over the summer. Because you will be
preparing for life after high school, we want you to choose a motivational or selfhelp book. This is a great opportunity for you to set goals and think more about
your future.
YOUR SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT HAS TWO REQUIRED PARTS:
Activity #1
 You are required to document at least FIVE responses based on what you have
read. There are directions located within the packet.
Activity #2
 In addition, you are required to complete a goal setting plan corresponding to your
book and its connection to your future.
**NOTE TO PARENTS: This writing assignment is a draft that will be used to collect data
on student writing.
Students will have the opportunity to revise their work, with the
assistance of their English teacher during the first term.
EXTRA OPPORTUNITIES:
There will be both Book Talks and Extra Help Sessions scheduled throughout the summer
at local libraries to help you further engage in your book. The dates of these events will be
posted on the GLTHS website, www.gltech.org, and will be updated throughout the summer.

INTRODUCTION
Do you believe that you are the creator of your life? How do you want your life to look right
now? Five years from now? What are the dreams that you truly desire? Your dreams are
your aspirations, desires, goals, and hopes that you most want for yourself. This exercise
will help you come up with a few dreams that you’d like to accomplish during your Senior
year here at Greater Lowell Technical High School and after you graduate.
As you create your dreams, try to make connections with your values and beliefs. As you
think about your dreams, think about these following questions:
1. “What do I want?” (Dream)
2. “What’s stopping me?” (Fears/ Obstacles)
3. “What am I going to do about it?” (Action)
4. “Who can help me?” (Support)
