Page 2 NEWS & UPDATES The congregation of Palm Coast United Methodist Church welcomes its new senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. Kevin M. James, Sr. and his family: wife, Linda; daughter, Brittany; son, Kevin, Jr.; and nephew, Michele Jackson. Pastor Kevin will begin his tenure on Sunday, July 1, 2012 when he will preach his first sermon, “I Love the Church” at all three services on Communion Sunday. Rev. James was born in Los Angeles, CA and raised in Daytona Beach, FL. He is an avid sports fan, has coached YMCA basketball, is the football chaplain at Bethune-Cookman University, and likes Family Time and Play Station 3. His wife, Linda, also from Daytona Beach, is a graduate of Florida A & M University and a twenty-nine year veteran of the Department of Children and Families. Her interests revolve around her husband and family, but also include playing word games on her iPad, sports, scrapbooking and sewing. Their family includes two adult children, Brittany Michelle, a graduate of Florida A & M , who is employed by the state in Tallahassee; Kevin, Jr., a sophomore at Bethune-Cookman University and employed by the YMCA, whose interests include culinary arts, sports, and media arts; and nephew Michele Jackson, entering 8th grade this fall at Indian Trails Middle School, whose interests include soccer and music, specifically the drums. Pastor Kevin comes to Palm Coast from Tampa, FL where he was senior pastor for seven years at Palma Ceia United Methodist Church. He has also served United Methodist Churches in Palatka and Daytona Beach; was a campus minister at Florida A & M University at Tallahassee; and Chaplain for Bethune-Cookman University. In 1998, Rev. James was the first African-American to serve as District Superintendent of the St. Petersburg District and the youngest District Superintendent appointed in the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. Over the years he has won recognition and numerous awards in the area of ministry. He recently completed a yearlong preaching study at Duke University Divinity School and will be publishing his first book, “Guess Who’s Coming to Church: The Cross-Racial, Cross-Cultural Experience” in July, 2012. Again, the congregation of Palm Coast UMC extends a warm welcome to Pastor Kevin, Linda, Brittany, Kevin, Jr. and Michele. WELCOME RECEPTION FOR PASTOR KEVIN AND FAMILY There will be a welcome reception on Sunday, July 8 at 3 pm in Fellowship Hall for Pastor Kevin and family. If you would like to contribute baked goods and/or desserts, please bring them to the kitchen in the morning during worship hours or just before the reception. Thank you! OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES SNOW IN JULY? One in ten Florida families struggle with hunger. We will be assisting the Bunnell Resource Center again this year by collecting food in white paper bags this month: “Snow in July.” Bags will be available at the Patio area on Sunday July 1; return filled bags to the Narthex by Sunday, July 8. SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR FLAGLER COUNTY It’s time to collect school supplies for Flagler County children who may not have the resources to buy their own. We are working with a county social worker to make sure the neediest kids in our area are ready for school. Please bring basic school supplies to church on Sundays, July 22 & 29, leaving them in the marked baskets in the Narthex. Contact Debbie Seiferheld, [email protected]. FAMILY PROMISE IS HERE!!! Our host week is August 12-19, 2012. Family Promise of Flagler County, a part of the greater national organization, began serving homeless families with children in June with the intent to help them get back on their feet and out of homelessness. Family Promise, cont. Our first host week is August 12-19 and our host site is Flagler Beach UMC.
