For Private Circulation H ave you ever felt like you were a nobody or an insignificant number? Perhaps you have felt like giving up on life because you don’t seem to amount to anything? Or perhaps you feel disappointed because life seems so unfair to you. If that’s you I have got the greatest news for you! You can experience a 180 degrees turn around and begin to experience real joy, fulfillment, life abundant, purpose, power and blessings beyond your wildest dreams. There is an account of a man named Jabez, tugged away in the genealogy of the Jews in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10. He had a bad start in life but His life changed significantly because he dared to pray. For many years as a Christian, I have never even heard of that name mentioned until a few years back when I read through 1 Chronicles and found these 2 verses jumping at me. They have become one of the most inspiring verses for my life. May his life and prayer inspire us to pray simple yet faith filled prayer that could bring wonderful changes into our lives. July - Sept 2005 1 Chr 4:9-10 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested. (NKJ) 9 Jabez didn’t have a good beginning in life. He caused his mother such great pain in his birth that she named him Jabez meaning one who caused pain, grief and sorrow. Imagine being called “Pain in the neck” all your life. However Jabez did not allow his past to dictate his future. He did not accept his status quo in life. He wanted a change. He wanted more. He wanted God’s blessings. So he prayed to God and became more honourable than his brothers. So simple? So (Pastor’s Column - Continued on page 2) Pastor’s Column 2 (Pastor’s Column - Continued from page 1) easy? Is that all it took to turn his life around? Yes! Jabez knew how to pray to the LORD, the living, almighty God who hears and answers the prayers of His people that are in accordance to His will. Bruce Wilkinson says, “Equal access to God’s favor does not add up to equal reward. Simply put, God favors those who ask. He holds back nothing from those who want and earnestly long for what He wants.” The Bible says, “You do not have because you do not ask” (Jam 4:2). Do you want God’s favor? Do you want an abundant and more honourable life? If you do, then you must pray. Do you take prayers seriously? Is it your first resource or your last resort? If you have not made it your first resource you have robbed Do you take prayer seriously? Is it your first resource or your last resort? yourself of God’s best for your life! Pray my brother! Pray my sister! Pray youth! Pray parents! Pray men! Pray! Pray! Pray! It will make all the difference! It’s your birth right! Don’t throw it away! Don’t rob yourself! Let’s look at what Jabez prayed for. Jabez prayed for 5 things. You too can ask God for these 5 things. 1. Oh, That You Would Bless Me Indeed! God wants to bless you so much. When He made man, the first thing He did was to bless them. When He called Abraham, He promised to bless him and make him a blessing. He sent Jesus so that He can remove our curses and bring us blessings. He wants to bless you. So ask for His blessings of peace, forgiveness, protection, fruitfulness, wisdom, favour, success, lots of good friends etc. He is a God who is merciful, gracious, compassionate and abounding in goodness… Ex 34:6. Jabez asked that God would bless him INDEED. Indeed means a lot of blessings - blessings that overflows. It is His will for you. Therefore ask Him for MORE blessings which would make you more honourable for His glory! 2. Enlarge My Territory. Ask God to enlarge your life, your sphere of influence, your faith, your love, your capacity, your business, your ministry etc. so that you can make a greater impact for Him. Whatever God has given you, ask Him to enlarge it to make you more fruitful. Ask Him for more opportunities, more responsibilities, more grace, more contacts that you may make a greater mark for His Kingdom. Bruce Wilkinson shared about “Living by God’s Math”. It is this: 3. That Your Hand Would Be With Me Pray for God’s hand to be with you. God’s hand speaks of God’s power, God’s ability, God’s presence that brings God’s kind of miraculous victories. God’s hand caused the young inexperienced David who against all odds defeated Goliath and then went on to become the greatest king of Israel. David had “the touch of Greatness” on him because God’s hand was with him. To experience God’s hand with you, you need to constantly depend on the Holy Spirit. God said that it’s not by might, it’s not by power BUT it is by MY SPIRIT (Zech 4:6). Dependency upon the Holy Spirit makes heroes of ordinary people like Jabez and you. With His mighty hand upon you, you can accomplish His will even in seemingly impossible situations. 4. That You Would Keep Me From Evil There is so much evil around us, so many sources of temptations and so much deception that we can easily fall into sin that dishonour God, His church, our loved ones and ourselves. Praying that God would keep you from evil is not only a prayer for protection but also a prayer of prevention from sin. God honours such a request because it tells God that you are really dependent on Him to protect you and that you really want to live right to please Him. Jesus also taught us to pray, “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.” Let’s pray that God will keep us out of the arena of temptation and protect us from every wicked scheme of the enemy. 5. That I May Not Cause Pain Jabez had caused great pain to his mother at birth therefore he did not want to live a life that brought pain to others. The opposite of causing pain is to bring joy, delight and blessings to others. When you are blessed to become a blessing, when you are enlarged to impact others for God’s glory, when God’s hand is upon you and when you are kept from evil, you will indeed cause joy and delight to others. Verse 10 ends simply with, “So God granted him what he requested.” When you pray with faith the above prayer, God will also grant you what you request. This is God’s will for you and I. Pray it for yourself, for your spouse, for your children, for your LG members, for your church, for your friends and relatives. You will see God’s answers manifested for His glory. AMEN! My Willingness and Weaknesses + God’s Will and Supernatural Power = My Expanding Territory God wants His Kingdom to keep on expanding. Asking for more territory is therefore God’s will for your life since you are His subjects. Pray to God to expand His Kingdom greatly through you. Walk in bold faith towards God who wants to enlarge you in all areas of your life. Praying For You, Khor Hoe Chai Pastor Editorial 3 C O N T E N Pastor’s Column Dear Readers, T he nationwide forty days of prayer and fasting has just ended on a high note, and we believe that our prayers have definitely ascended before God. A big salute to you, brothers and sisters and all Christians in Malaysia, who have committed yourselves to fast and pray for our nation and the nations of the world. Much has indeed happened in the spiritual realm and we will see the manifestation in the physical realm. For those of us who have already begun to see personal breakthroughs and answers to prayers, praise the Lord! For some of us who have yet to see answers, stand believing - our answers are on the way! It was at critical point with API readings at certain areas reaching 500, forcing the government to declare a state of emergency over those areas. To add to the adversity, rain was not to be expected till October, and water rationing was imminent. In that period of crisis, the cries of God’s people ascended before Him as one, “Please, send us rain, Lord!” And rain it did! Rain poured and poured not just over the affected areas but over the hot spots in Sumatra - the source of the haze, extinguishing the peat fires. Oh, how grateful we were to God for the relief. We could breathe so much easier and see so much clearer. Brothers and sisters, there is an even more urgent cry that has ascended before God, the cry for spiritual rain, the rain of the Holy Spirit to clear the spiritual haze that invades His Church, that chokes the life of His people and blurs our vision. We need a clearer vision of God, His plans and purposes that our lives will be on track for God. We know God has heard and He will certainly answer. LORD, let it pour! If you have experienced breakthroughs through prayer, please share it with us. And with your permission, we will put it in print that it might bless all who read. After 8 hours of train ride and 4 hours on the bus, we arrived at Yuen Yuen for a service. Our hearts were warmth by the zeal of the believers. Since turning to the Lord, he has been actively preaching the gospel. Five years ago these youth from Lang Fang village were still children. Pray that God will use them in the work at Lugu Lake. P astor Daniel, Sis Lee Ping and I went on our mission trip to Lugu Lake, China from 1st to 12th June 2005. Our first stop was at Yuen Yuen where a cell group of 20 or more believers was held. The meeting started at 8.30 p.m and finished at 11p.m. There were testimonies, teaching & prayer. It was my first encounter with that group of believers. Among them was a 70 year old lady who walked for almost two hours uphill to attend the cell group. Their fervency for God really touched my heart. After the cell group ended, that elderly lady gave us some money for the following day’s breakfast. The fervency of the believers really touched my heart. Next, we arrived at Pa Ta Tui village, where we met up with a brother who was just released from the prison. According to him, he was imprisoned by the authorities because he was caught sharing the gospel with others. Although he was caught numerous times, fined 2,000 RMB and subjected to beating, it did not stop him from sharing the gospel, as he was not Beside Ps. Daniel is Bro. Xiao Fung. We continued our journey to Lang Fang Village where Chun Siew resides. We traveled in a small lorry for about 3 hours. The winding & muddy road was a challenge for us. Although the journey was tough due to the road conditions, I treasure my very first and unforgettable experience. In addition to the mission work, this trip has given me the opportunity to see the historical rock garden and China’s treasure - the Panda bear. During my stay at Lugu Lake, I also witnessed the local art and cultural dance - what an eye opener for me! I thank God that throughout the trip I experienced God’s protection. I had sufficient funds for all my expenses. Besides that, I was able to sleep and eat well. My life has changed and now I have a better attitude towards Christ and my Christian life. I thank you brothers & sisters for your prayers, without which this trip would not have been realized. Missions 5 MISSIONS CONVENTION 2005 by Chan Tham Seng The church came to a rude awakening during the 10 September Missions Convention. The convention, themed The Mission of Our Church, was challenged to face up to a growing “elephant” if it were truly obedient to the Great Commission of Matt 28:18 - 20. Racial prejudice against the “ S a m a r i t a n ” community is still a wall hindering the Malaysian churches today. Meanwhile, the walls of fear and unbelief have also sprung up to virtually close all doors of communication between churches and the “Samaritans”. Some “Samaritans” complained that the churches are shunning them like they have shunned a plague. The convention was told that God has been patient with the local churches and sent outsiders to do the task of evangelism which they themselves should be doing. In the run-up to the return of Christ as King, the “elephant” is getting too big to be ignored. The church was urged to repent for being “happily blind” to her responsibility in the past. The “elephant”, which has long been ignored, is likened to the “Samaritan” community in the days of the early church. Jesus followers were having a great time A word of in Jerusalem Malaysian churches today are caution. It where the Jews were also avoiding their “Samaritans”. doesn’t mean that the church converted by should adopt the thousands. a foolhardy approach in reaching out to Acts 2:47 says that “the Lord added the “Samaritans’. Instead of harbouring to their number daily those who fear vis-a-vis the “Samaritan” community, were being saved.” In the midst of the church was told to cultivate friendship the great revival, the disciples forgot with the “Samaritans”. Whatever the about the other people groups outside approaches, the churches must be Jerusalem. In Acts 1:8, the Lord had ready to pay a price: “… everyone who clearly commanded the followers to be wants to live a godly His “witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all life in Christ Jesus Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of will be persecuted.” the earth.” (2 Tim 3:12) The convention was told that much has been done in Jerusalem among the Jewish-speaking people. However, the early disciples avoided the “Samaritans”. Malaysian churches today are also avoiding their “Samaritans”. It is said that Islam became a dorminant religion in Malaysia because of the racial prejucide the European Christians held against the Malay community in the early days. As a result, they made no effort to evangelise the Malays who later came under the influence of the Arab traders and their Islamic faith. The message at the Missions Convention was clear and direct. The testimonies of what God is doing in the “Samaritan” community is reassuringly powerful. Many among the week-end participants were moved to teary repentance. May the awakening cause a change in the church leadership with regard to her responsibility to the “Samaritans” at the doorstep. On the regional front, the “Samaritan” communities in neighbouring Indonesia are also experiencing God’s merciful touches. A testimony was told of an Ambon believer Yohanes who survived a violent persecution with deep and ugly scars all over his body. He learned to be a paramedic before the December 2004 tsunami struck Banda Aceh, home of Islamic jihadists. Yohanes was struggling with himself whether he should help those who had tried to massacre him. Finally, he obeyed and got to tell his story to some Acehnese when they noticed his wounds. His testimonies convicted the hearts of the jihadists into great sorrows and repentance. God calls us to love the “Samaritan” communities, at home or abroad. Missions 6 MISSION Talk F INALLY, we had to deal with the issues of growing up. It wasn’t a sudden realisation. In the last six years, the church had made 10 trips to Lugu Lake winning, directly and indirectly, some 20 people to Jesus. In 1999, the believers were mainly children. Today, they’re well into their adolescence or young adulthood. Small wonder that at the 10th trip (Aug 7-24, 2005), my wife and I felt strongly led to talk with them subjects we did not touch on previously. On 14 August morning, half-hidden on a lush slope overlooking the placid Lugu waters, Esther spoke to a gathering of six believers on God’s law regarding courtship and marriage. She stressed by Chan Tham Seng on Aug 13). Since we’re cautioned of the animosity of some villagers towards our presence, we chose to meet in a quiet corner fronting the lake. Again, we touched on issues of growing up as believers. It Esther spoke to a gathering was at this meeting that we of six believers on God’s law secured the commitment of Chunxiu to resume the regarding courtship & marriage. regular fellowship for the Langfang believers (The on the importance of choosing a fellowship first started in May 2002. believer as life partner. I spoke on the It lasted for about 9 months until lordship of Jesus in all aspects of our Chunxiu and other older believers left life. I touched on the need to fellowship Langfang for education or employment among believers particularly when they elsewhere.) We prayed over Chunxiu are away from home working in another for God’s anointing upon her as leader town. The bond of fellowship is vital as of the fellowship. a defense against temptations in the adult world. Chunxiu’s deputy is a young man called Lupin. He spent two years in another We proposed to meet again two days province but had returned some months later in Langfang (we entered the village ago to work as a boat-rower at the Lugu Secluded meeting with 6 Lugu believers (Chunxiu is 2nd from right) Lake. As he was busy in the day, we had separate sessions for him in the night. Lupin, too, was willing to work with Chunxiu in reviving the Langfang fellowship. In Chunxiu and Lupin, as well as other Lugu believers like Lugao and Chunhua, we saw God’s grace and mercy upon their lives. These young believers had blundered in one way or another in the new environment where they worked. God allowed it, perhaps, as a form of training for adulthood. God had certainly protected them and, in His perfect timing, brought them back to Lugu Lake to fulfill His salvation plan for the highland peoples. God’s timing is always perfect and His working, amazing. Take Chunxiu, for example. Eleven days before we arrived at Langfang, Chunxiu returned home after she was retrenched from a Yanyuan factory where she worked. When we met her in her Langfang home recently, she had already resumed the home fellowship on two occasions. During her one year working in Yanyuan, Chunxiu came under a rather “strict” discipleship of our Henan partner Sister Gong. Sister Gong, who accompanied us to Lugu Lake, went through100 topical studies with Chunxiu, requiring her to make notes that filled up three exercise books. “After that, we went through the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, chapter by chapter,” said Sister Gong, adding, “Chunxiu also had to memorise about 14 scripture verses in one week.” We agreed that Chunxiu, a 19-year-old Pumi believer, is God’s choice to lead the home fellowship in Langfang. (Growing up in lugu lake- Continued on page 7) Missions & Inspirational Story 7 (Growing up in lugu lake- Continued from page 6 La Laoshi (with daughter) reaffirmed his faith. With the resumption of the home fellowship, I felt that God is speeding up His work in Lugu Lake, by raising more colabourers. Besides our Yanyuan-based Henan partners who make regular trips to Lugu Lake, God may be bringing in more helpers according to His timetable. On our way back to Kunming, we stopped by Lijiang to locate a young man called Yuan Xiaoxing, with whom Sisters Lee Ping and Molly befriended during the 9th Lugu trip. Yuan is a believer originated from Yongning, a secluded town 20km north of Lugu Lake. Somehow, my wife and I felt a strong urge to link up with him. Inside the ancient town of Lijiang, the boyish-faced Yuan looked after an art and craft shop for Brother Kang, a local Christian leader hailed from Hebei province. It was then that we learned of Yuan’s amazing rebirth three years ago from his utterly rebellious and reckless past, thanks to some Singaporean Christians. Yuan was subsequently discipled and now awaiting a fulltime assignment. We felt that Yuan was ideal to help in the Lugu Lake ministry since he came from there and knew about some of the Lugu believers. Nevertheless, Night session with Lupin (left) we left the matter to God but urged Yuan and Brother Kang to seek God’s confirmation over our proposal. The 10th trip was truly exciting, seeing how God made “all things work together for good” (Rom 8: 28), according to His perfect plan and timing. In Lugu Lake, God uses our church to touch the lives of the Mosuo, Pumi, Yi, Naxi, Han, Tibetan and Mongolian people. And it is wonderful to know that God is still working faithfully on the Mongolian prince La Laoshi. In Zuosuo, we had two sessions with La Laoshi. He prayed with us to reaffirm his faith in Jesus. He encouraged him to continue in his walk with Jesus and pray for the salvation of his family members. La Laoshi appeared cheerful and grateful, saying that many family matters turned out well since our several visits previously. To experience more of God’s blessings, Esther encouraged La Laoshi to stop worshipping his Lama god. To see more of God’s working in Lugu Lake, we urge you to pray for La Laoshi, Yuan and the Chunxiu team. O nce upon a time a little candle stood in a room filled with other candles, most of them much larger and much more beautiful than he was. Some were ornate and some were rather simple, like him. Some were white, some were blue, some were pink, some were green. He had no idea why he was there, and the other candles make him feel rather small and insignificant. When the sun went down and the room began to get dark, he noticed a large man walking towards him with a ball of fire on a stick. He suddenly realized that the man was going to set him on fire. “No, no!!” she cried, “Aaaaagghhh! Don’t burn me please!” But he knew that he could not be heard and prepared for the pain that would surely follow. To his surprise, the room filled with light. He wondered where it came from since the man had extinguished his fire stick. To his delight, he realized that the light came from himself. “Perhaps my purpose on earth is to give out light until I die.” Then the man struck another fire stick and, one by one, lit the other candles in the room. Each one gave out the same light that he did. During the next few hours, he noticed that, slowly, his wax began to flow. He became aware that he would soon die. With this realization came a sense of why he had been created. “Perhaps my purpose on earth is to give out light until I die,” he mused. And that’s exactly what he did. God created you and me to produce light in a dark world. Like a candle, we all can produce the same amount of light, no matter how small we are or what colour we might be. But we can’t produce light until we receive it from an outside source. That source is Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. Also like the candle, we have to die in order to produce light. If we try to preserve ourselves, our lives will be meaningless. But if we are willing to lose our lives for Christ’s sake (Matthew 10:39), we will find our true purpose and meaning. Testimony 8 by Pastor Khor I still remember the time when I first visited Bagan si apiapi in Indonesia and was captivated by the very Chinese (more specifically Hokkien) flavour of that town known as the mini China of Indonesia. Many of the residents there have the same surname as me. Just spending a couple of days there stirred a strong desire in my heart to go back to my roots, to my father’s home village in China. nephews and nieces are in their 40s while my grandnephews and grandnieces are in their teens and early 20s. Some of them are sociable while others are rather shy and quiet. We noticed the photographs hanging on the walls – photographs of my father and mother, and wedding photos of my brothers and sisters. My In July 2005, by divine arrangement I believe, all eight of us brothers and sisters agreed to go back to China together for a four day trip. We, as a family, have never been on any trip together before, let alone travel all the way back to my father’s birthplace in China. Just the thought of being together on such a trip was thrilling and amazing. Everything moved so quickly that by 30th July we were on our way to the airport. We had fun talking about what to expect. In fact we had a wonderful time throughout the whole trip. On the flight there and back, I had the opportunity to share the gospel with my second sister and my fourth brother. When we came out of the Xiamen airport we were greeted by our nephews and grandnephews, all strange faces to us for we have never seen them before. It took us a while to get to know them. I was sure we looked strange to them too. Thanks to my brothers and sisters who were very friendly and light-hearted, we had some good laughs trying to communicate with them in our Malaysian Hokkien and Mandarin. I’m really hopeless in my Hokkien but praise the Lord they did understand a bit of my Mandarin. It took us two hours to reach our hotel in “Chuan Chou” on a chartered mini bus. After checking in, we immediately went to the village in “Tong Yuan” which was another 45 Reading the 4 ‘Spiritual Laws’ together in my minutes away. brother’s house. The bus stopped us in a school compound which was a short distance walk to the house of my eldest brother, Ho Weng. We noticed that the houses around were well built with stone-block walls. When we arrived we were greeted by warm, loving hands and hearts. My My eldest brother (2nd from left), his wife & son. youngest sister affirmed jokingly that we were indeed in the right house. There were scripture verses written by my eldest brother on the door lintels, post and on the doors too. Wow! This is a Christian home in China and it’s my brother’s house. I praise the Lord for the rich Christian heritage of my father. After being welcomed with a bowl of four big hard boiled eggs each, we all sang the chorus, “Thank You Jesus” and I offered a prayer of thanksgiving. My eldest brother who is bed ridden was unable to speak to us. But he held out his hands many times to us and we grasped his hand with love and affection. We prayed for him many times in the course of our time there. Following the eggs, they served us fruits, fried peanuts, fried “lala”, salty rice, chicken soup and other yummy original Hokkien dishes that my father used to enjoy. No wonder we got to eat all these yummies in our childhood days. We spent the rest of the evening just talking and getting to know each other better until we all felt it was time to get back to the hotel to take some rest. The following day was Sunday. My nephew had arranged for me to preach in their church in the town, so we all went to church early in the morning after breakfast. It was really wonderful to have all my brothers and sisters going to church together in my father’s village in China. The church is 109 years old and is quite (A journey back to my roots- Continued on page 9) Testimony 9 (A journey back to my roots- Continued from page 8) Preaching in the church where my father attended. 2.00 pm the following day she would be at the gates of heaven. Sure enough the next day at around 2.00 pm she departed to heaven with a glow on her face. We have framed up her note and it’s hanging in our family house now to remind us. I then preached a simple gospel message and was surprised to see two thirds of the congregation responding to the altar call to receive Jesus as Saviour and Lord and to have the assurance of salvation. They all prayed the sinners’ prayer with hands lifted and I was sure there was great rejoicing in heaven. Following “Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household”. that, I prayed for those who had sicknesses. I asked them to lay their hands on that part of their body that was not well and to receive their healing. They responded with great faith and I believed that many received their healing that morning. One elderly woman came to tell me that she was instantly healed of her back pain during the prayer. a large church with Sunday attendance of several hundreds and sometimes reaching more than a thousand. Our visit was so timely, for had we gone a week later, we would not have been able to worship in that church, as the old structure was no longer safe and must be torn down to make way for a new building. God is certainly faithful in keeping this church growing and thriving. The present pastor (Pastor Wong) is a young man who recently came back from the Philippines Some members who knew my father. after attending a two years training course there. We met some Christians who knew my father and my grandmother personally. My grandmother was a very fervent Christian who came over to Malaysia in the year I was born in 1958. I believe that her prayers for me have impacted my life till now. During the service, all of us from Malaysia presented the song “God is so good” in Hokkien. After singing a few hymns, Pastor Wong invited me to the pulpit to preach. I preached in Mandarin and he interpreted to Hokkien. I thank the Lord for anointing me to preach in Mandarin. The words flowed smoothly and His boldness rested upon me to preach from Acts 16:31, “Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household”. I started by thanking the church for my grandmother and father’s Christian roots that have impacted us as a family. My grandmother and father were Christians and even though my father backslided when he came to Malaysia in his youth, God preserved His seed in us. I was the first in my family to get saved in 1972, followed by Hoe Seng, Woh Hock and Hong Lan. Before my father passed away he had a clear commitment to Jesus. He died peacefully with a smile on his face and I had the assurance that he is in heaven. Later my mother also accepted the Lord and before she departed she wrote on a sheet of paper that at We all had a most wonderful time there in church worshipping the Lord and fellowshipping with the saints. The pastor invited us to come back often. He also asked us to send missionaries to them to preach and teach there. After we left the church we continued to spend time with my family there and we could really sense the bonds of love being built. I had the opportunities to speak to some of them personally to encourage them to seek the Lord first, to pray and to serve Him. My brothers and sisters enjoyed the trip very much. It was not the sightseeing or the food but the precious relationships that made the trip so wonderful. It was certainly God’s ordained trip in China. My deepest prayer is that we will all one day dwell together in the FATHER’S house above forever. I came back with a renewed faith and commitment to pray for the salvation of all my family members and to seek opportunities to share the gospel with them one by one. When we came back I felt strongly to ask my second brother, Ho Peng, and his wife to get baptized. They responded positively and on Saturday 6th August, I was overjoyed to see them make their commitment to Christ in baptism. Praise the Lord! Now I’m praying for the rest of my brothers and sisters and their children. Ho Peng and his wife. May I end this testimony by encouraging all of us who still have unsaved family members to keep praying and believing God for their salvation. God is faithful! He said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household”. Salvation – It is the greatest gift to all mankind. Do all you can to ensure your family members get it. Matt 9:1-7 - The paralytic was saved without water baptism. 2. Luke 7:36-50 - A woman sinner was forgiven without water baptism. 3. Luke 19:1-9 - Zacchaeus was saved without baptism. 4. Acts 10:44-48 - Cornelius and his household were saved and baptized in the Spirit and then Water baptism is an indication to others that baptized with water after their experience. we have already decided to follow Christ. The medium of water baptism is usually water. For Example: 1. Matt 3:16 - When Jesus had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water. 2. Acts 8:38-39 - Philip and the eunuch went down both into the water and came out of the water. Why Must Christians Be Baptized? 1. It is a commandment given by Christ. When we obey God’s commandments, we are blessed. 2. Water baptism is an indication to others that we have already decided to follow Christ and become a member of the Church. 3. It is a symbolic action that identifies a believer with the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Christ. The benefits for which Christ died will then become our experience through faith. Rom 6:3-14 Can Baptism Save Us? 1. Baptism cannot save us. 2. The way by which we can be saved: a. By grace through faith (Eph 2:8-9) “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works lest anyone should boast.” b. By faith in the blood of Jesus (Rom 3:24-25) “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” e.By believing on (John 3:16, 1 John5:1) Jesus “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life.” “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God…” f. By repentance and conversion (Acts 3:19) “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out…” g. By faith in His Name (Acts 3:16) “And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong,…Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.” 3. There is no scripture in the New Testament that teaches baptism can save a person. 4. Baptism is plainly taught as being figurative or symbolic of an inward work which has been accomplished. A person who is not born again will The scripture clearly shows people must be saved first before baptism. Those who are believers are the only one commanded to be baptized (Matt 28:19, Acts 2:41). What About Infant Baptism? 1. There is no support for infant baptism in any scripture. 2. There is also no case of baptism of infants in the scripture. 3. Scripture demands faith and repentance as necessary before baptism and no infant can do this until he is old enough to understand sin and what is required to be saved. When Should A Christian Be Baptized? Acts 2:36-38 - The believers were baptized after their conversion. Acts 8:35-38 - The eunuch was baptized immediately after his conversion. Acts 10:44-48 - Cornelius and his household were baptized soon after they were saved. Every Christian should be baptized as soon as possible after they are saved. We all want to obey God and be blessed. Testimonies 11 by May Cheok My first impression of Christians especially those in HGC was very unexpected. They are so positive and joyful unlike others. They are so friendly and I felt at home even though I hardly know them. My mum is a wonderful woman and an exceptionally good “gospel sharer”. Even at her own husband’s funeral service, she stood up and witness for Christ. I knew she was very anxious about my “unbelieving” state but she did not pressurize me in any way. I really appreciated that. She would just keep on encouraging t is written in Acts 16:31 “Believe on me to go to church, rope me in to help the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be her copy praise songs and even to join saved, you and your household.” How her and my brother when they prayed true! How very true! Both my parents together. As a result, “little by little” I have either a brother or a sister who is grew in the knowledge of Jesus Christ a Christian. In my own family, my late and my heart became more receptive. father (Uncle Cheok to most of you) was I accepted the Lord on the 30th of April the first one to give his life to Jesus. His faithfulness to Jesus and baptism too, on 6th August 2005. Praise persistence in sharing God’s love to us the Lord! eventually led to my mum’s salvation in December 2004. Before I accepted the Lord, I was really very shy and timid. Now, I can see The atmosphere at home was so positive changes in myself. I am more different after my mum’s conversion and confident and outgoing. “Therefore, if the removal of all the idols. Dad would anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, teach Mum praise and worship songs old things have passed away, behold and simple prayers. Seeing their joy and all things have become new.” (2 Cor a new depth in their relationship touched 5:17) Though the changes were “little a tender cord in my heart. by little”, I believe that with the support, encouragement and prayers of the Before my dad went home to be with brothers and sisters in HGC especially the Lord on 2nd February, 2005, he said those of my BGLG, there should be this to me, “May, if Dad is not around, more “surprises”. please accompany your mum to church.” I I did not understand it then but after his demise, the real impact hit home. So, despite the fact that I was still an unbeliever then, I accompanied my mum to Sunday Services and even followed my brother Andy to the “Bread Givers” life group (BGLG). Here, at BGLG, I made many new friends who encouraged me. I’m on “cloud nine” because I know my Lord loves me. And being able to pray in the Spirit also enhances my communion with Him. Now, I purpose in my heart to follow in His footsteps and by His grace, to “walk with Him” all my life. I heard about Jesus when I was very young, about four or five years old. At that time my grandfather brought me to a church that was nearby our house. What I liked about that church was the church bell, especially when it rang. To me then, a church was a place where we sang a lot of songs. After my grandfather died, no one brought me to church any more and since my own family was strong in Buddhism, I didn’t have the chance to really know Jesus. Later when I was in High School, a friend of mine by the name of Chee Nga shared the gospel with me. On two occasions I also attended a small group gathering. But I didn’t have any intention of knowing more about Jesus because I felt as if the pastor was forcing me to accept Jesus Christ. However, through them I knew that the Lord was mighty and the Creator of everything. Finally, it was my girlfriend, Siew Chyi, who brought me to the LORD. I was touched by His word which made me realize that Jesus loves me and sacrificed His life for my sins. Because of Jesus I have eternal life now. On the 6th of October, I was baptized. Since becoming a Christian, life has been more meaningful. I know the Holy Spirit is always with me, guiding me to walk on the right path and one day I will see Jesus in heaven. Testimonies 12 H e [Jesus] said to the man, “Reach out your hand.” The man reached out his hand, and it became normal again! Mark 3:5 In the midst of my unbelief or lack of faith, GOD has yet again proven that HE HEALS. On the morning of April 8, 2005, while at work, the string to a file that I was carrying became undone thus all the strength I put forth in lifting the thick file came upon my face or rather my left eye (mind you I am quite strong). The impact was so great that I almost knocked myself out, my left lens [I was wearing Gas Permeable lens, a type of hard lens] flew off and for a spilt moment my vision was distorted. It took me a while to realize what had happened. Praise God my vision came back shortly thereafter but I was in pain. My left eye was swollen and red. The pain persisted. A thorough check revealed a shocking condition. From the mirror image of my left eye, I saw a tear in my cornea. Realizing the seriousness of my condition, I told myself that I had to see an eye specialist the next day. I turned myself in early that night. From the mirror image of my left eye, I saw a tear in my cornea. MY GOD DELIVERED. The very moment I opened my eyes the next morning, I felt different. There was no pain. Quickly I rushed to the mirror. I could not find the tear that I saw the night before. Still unbelieving, I continued to examine my eye every few minutes. Praise God! The redness of the eye had subsided and although my eye was still swollen I found myself getting better by the minutes. At that moment, deep within my spirit, I knew MY GOD HAD HEALED ME. For some reason, I found my lens on the floor nearby. I tried inserting the lens back but strangely I found that I wasn’t able to do so. Only then did I realize that due to that impact, I had actually flattened the lens. Would you believe it? Prior to this and despite witnessing the miraculous birth of my nephew, Jonathan, I still found myself wanting when it came to seeking GOD for divine healing. My prayer for healing was without any expectation nor carried any authority, merely begging and hoping that GOD would heal. The pain grew and the slightest gust of wind would bring more stabbing pain. The optometrist checked on me and strongly advised that I gave my eyes a rest for he had found some scratches on my left cornea. That night while resting at home, my nephew, Jonathan Liew [actually my mom had asked him to pray for me] came and asked what was wrong with me and why I was in pain. After understanding the situation, he lifted up my spectacles and with his tiny fingers placed on my left eye, he prayed a very simple prayer saying, “Be healed in the name of JESUS.” M y mother, my aunt and a friend of mine had been encouraging me to attend church services at almost the same time. To me, they seem to be sending a message on behalf of God that it was now the right time to go to church. So I informed my friend, Esther Chang, of my intention to follow her to her church (HGC) on that coming Sunday. From that day on I attended church services frequently and got to know Pastor Khor. Besides him, I also met Pastor Roger at a party. He asked me a few questions. When he asked for the name of my church, I gave a most embarrassing answer, ‘Glory of Hope.’ When I told Esther about it she reprimanded me for not knowing the name of the church we attended. By God’s grace, I know that HE is dealing with me in this area. He has caused me to see and experience for myself the power of His healing grace. Perhaps that is the reason why HE has allowed me to find the lens, an exhibit of HIS protection over me. I am thankful to GOD always for opening the eyes of my understanding that I may know what is the hope of His calling. Guess what? GOD has even blessed me with the money I needed for a pair of new lenses. He is a good GOD who does not allow even the smallest details to be left out. Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. Matt 6:8 From that incident, I realized I have not been serious about knowing Jesus and the Christian faith. I told myself I must be serious about it. At that time, Bro Wai Choong had begun to have bible studies with me nearly every Sunday after service. Through those studies I had a better understanding of the gospel. Watching the movies “Passion of Christ” and “Jesus of Nazareth” also helped me to know Jesus more. I also began to read the Bible on my own. The words of God opened my eyes and heart and I accepted Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. Then I really wanted to be serious with God and decided to be baptized. On 6 August, after attending a few baptism classes, I was baptized. Since knowing the Lord, my life has never been better. Things have improved. I know if I continue to walk faithfully with Him, there will be even greater changes. Testimonies 13 G od is so goooood, God hears our prayers and knows the desires of our heart. It is always good to be in church every Sunday. There are times I cannot fully understand the messages or scriptures but I guess it is alright to learn little by little - to develop the godly character of faithfulness and patience (it is not easy), to be a blessing to others, learning to trust in the Lord, to sow and to share my happiness, joy and worries as well... Just want to glorify God and share the blessing of God, which I experienced recently. It is so awesome and I never thought it could happen to me. God is always on time and at the right time too, never too early or too late. 31 March 2005 - I booked a Toyota Vios on the last date with the special offer of first year free interest. The loan interest I was getting anxious because my car insurance and road tax would expire. rate was 2.88% with an expected waiting period of 2-3 months and the approximate delivery date was end May 2005. April to May 2005 - under waiting list 1 June 2005 - I was told to wait further, that the expected date of delivery was between 15 to 20 June. Even then it was not confirmed. I followed up with a few more calls to the showroom as well as the HQ but was told to be patient and wait for their call. I was getting anxious because my car insurance and road tax would expire on 21st June 2005. 10th June 2005 - I started to panic when there was still no news of my new car. I did not intend to renew my road tax and insurance as I was trying to save some money. I started to share my worries with Christine and Bachan, my sisters-inChrist, who prayed to GOD about my worries and specifically about the delivery date of the car. I praise God for this recent 40 days of prayer and fasting. It was spectacular as far as my Christian life is concerned. Well, the first week of fasting was pretty tough because of hunger pangs. But as the days went on, I soon got over it. I did not see any visions or signs throughout the 40 I thought that God must be very, very busy looking into and listening to other bigger and more serious problems than mine. I asked myself whether I should trouble God with this small problem. I decided to trust in the Lord, believing that if God can help others, surely God’s mighty hands can also help me. Ricky, Sally, Christine, Bachan and I started to be specific in our prayers, “Please, let the new car be delivered by 15th June 2005.” Oh, it really worked. I received the awaited call. Yes, the new car was at the stockyard in Sri Kembangan. All I had to do was to make payments, thereafter to register and collect the new car on 17th June 2005 after 6.00 p.m. Wow, I felt so blessed. God heard our prayers. But sad to say... at 5.00 p.m. on 17th June 2005, I received another call telling me that the car was still not registered because of some problems with JPJ. I tried again on Monday, 20th June 2005 but again there were no guarantee I would get the car. That was the last date for me to deliver my old car before the road tax expired. 20th June 2005 - At 5.30 p.m. there was still no news. I felt disappointed but yet had the hope to get my new car since no news meant good news for me. I prayed in the spirit and kept telling myself to trust in the Lord that the new car would be registered with a blessed number and waiting for collection. At 6.00 pm, while on my way with Ricky to the Ampang Point branch, my phone rang. Before the salesman could say anything, I told him that I was on my way to collect the new car. Guess what? Yes, the car was ready and waiting for collection. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Glory to God! God delivered my car as we had asked for in prayer. Amen. days, but there was a tremendous breakthrough in my prayer life. I joined Ps Khor and Ps Daniel in the morning prayers. It was a truly wonderful experience. After ten long years of dormancy, God began to enlarge my heart with compassion and I learnt to pray again. Out from my mouth came forth prayers of compassion and intercession for the nations, for the pastors, the church and for individual lives. I also started to intercede for missionaries like Ps Jeffery Oo for the ministry in Bangladesh; Bro Tham Seng and Sis Yen Fung for the work in Kokang (Poppyland); Ps Tat for the ministry among our ‘neighbours’. Their courage and boldness inspire me. Besides that, God has also stirred my heart to visit the sick in hospitals, to pray for them and share Jesus with them. Kindy Update 14 L ittle Lighthouse Family Day was held on 16 July 2005 at 10.00 a.m. at Dewan Dato Ahmad Razali. Why not call it Sports Day instead of family day? Well, coz we’d like the family to join in the fun as well. Moreover, there were a lot of programmes for the whole family. First we had the year 3 going fishing, then the year 4 matching items and having fun remembering which coloured bubble to flip. Next, the year 5 faced Math quiz, huh. A math quiz? Yes, and they were pretty good, too. For them, preparing a model to go to school was no problem too. After all, the models were their schoolmates from year 6! For year 6 kids, they had a formidable task ahead. The first game was relatively easy, just going shopping and getting the most correct items. The formidable one was the Grammar Fun. What! 6 years old kiddies? Grammar? Yup and they were pretty awesome too. Nevertheless, let me tell you this, the teens were pretty awesome too. The way they gnash their way into mounds of flour just to sink their jaws into the sweets. The group with the most sweets wins you see. Grrrr . . outta my way. I’m gonna win! Yeah, may the best mouth err, I mean group win. And now, the parents, it’s Tug-O-War! And boy oh boy, tug they did. I can still see them with grim determination and rock steady positioning of feet. They pulled, tugged and heaved . . . Whew! I bet the kids were real proud of their parents. All their efforts were not wasted though, for they helped to add score to the respective houses. When the pair of affable and handsome M.Cs – Vincent and Calvin announced the Green House as the winner, deafening cheers resounded through the hall. Tired but happy, the kids then trooped outdoors to have refreshments sponsored by Milo. Chattering at the top of their voices, one could hear them recounting all the happenings to their families. Clutching prizes and goodies they made their way home. Goodbye, till we meet again at our concert and graduation. Maka kami, anak Malaysia, memastikan supaya menjaga nama baik mu. Pledging their patriotism to the nation. Oops! Someone got over excited and lifted the wrong hand! All set! Getting ready for the March pass. The MCs getting snowed! Don’t tell me the answer, I know my grammar pretty well Scooping away for fishes. It’s fun arranging the pretty dots. Got it! Last of the items on the list. Aiyah, keep still la you! Let Mummy undress you okay? C’mon people 1,2,3… PUSHHHHH! Err I mean PULLLL! Hey boys, are you waiting for the princess to wake you up with a kiss? Malaysia boleh! We ladies also boleh! Home Event 15 Never to old to get healthy Come on! Lift that muscular thigh up. I t’s 8 o’clock on that beautiful Saturday morning, 2nd July 2005. HGC organized a superb Father’s Day outing (all fun under the sun) for our beloved fathers at the Bandar Baru Ampang field. Breakfast under the umbrella tree. With the arena set, around 30 fathers walked in happily with no idea of what to expect. “Ha! Got them!” We started off with a simple warm-up exercise under the big ‘umbrella’ tree. Then we proceeded to a fine spread of wholesome breakfast carefully prepared by some mothers and youth. Well, I would say a large chuck of the time was spent around the table sipping morning kopi ‘O’ whilst indulging in a serious chat of fatherhood. It was a sheer delight to see the connection our fathers had with one another because of the common status they shared. Next, were the games. The fathers were divided into 3 colouredteams. Each game was skillfully planned to fortify greater bonds amongst the fathers. They loved it although badly ‘tortured’ - not to mention the laughter and fun that came along with it. The fathers had their pay back when they proudly defeated the youth in a captain ball match. The score was 10 to. . . (ehhh..not worth mentioning). Prize giving. Poy: Stop disturbing me! I’m trying to find the paper ball. That eventful day came all too quickly to an end with gifts, prizes and loads of memories tugged in. Much time was taken in organizing the event because ‘Fathers, you deserve it!’ Kids! You better watch for this cane. We won’t spare the rod. Musical chairs Home Event As darkness fell unto small town Ampang, activity buzzed in the topmost floor of HGC. It was history in the making on the special night of September 3, 2005. Participants came early hoping to catch a glimpse of the hype. But anticipation built when they realise that the doors will remain shut until 8pm. What was all the “hush hush” about? When the clock struck, the unveiling began. Behind those sealed doors lay a secret that was kept and known only by a handful of people. The secret is out. It is a mini photo gallery carefully hidden in the heart of Ampang. The entries of HGC’s first photograph exhibition were displayed in a majestic manner. Every entry is precious as it will contribute to the decoration of the new sanctuary that is still in renovation. The responses from participants were encouraging and the crowd could not contain their excitement. All the hard work has paid off for team members Calvin, Khek Loong, Jason and Amanda. This mission school was started by Bro Tim Chan and his wife Esther. Kokang is located in the poppy growing areas in Myanmar. The Bible teaches us to carry out a lot of good works. F irst of all, we thank God for putting His love and grace into our hearts to care for the widows, orphans and poor among us as well as those in Bangladesh and Kokang, Myanmar. Over the last few months, we have been moved to understand the LORD’s desire for us to lead a righteous life Matt 5:16 - Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven. Eph 2:10 - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. 1Tim 6:18 - That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Your small donation will rise before God as a sweet remembrance. and do righteous deeds (good works). As a result, on 24th April 2005, we launched A.S.S.I.S.T. (acronym for “Aids for Special Saints In Strategic Times” coined by Pastor Jeffrey Oo), a special fund set up initially to help Pastor Dulal’s widow and orphans in Bangladesh. Pastor Dulal was beheaded by radical Muslims in front of his family in April 2005 for leading some Muslims to the LORD. This fund later extended to a few others of our HGC members who are in need. In July, we also extended help to purchase canvas shoes for the poor students in the newly set up 2Tim 3:17- That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. We do not need to do good works in a big way if it is beyond our ability. It is our heart and willingness to show love and care for others which the LORD wants. ASSIST raises fund in a special way. Once a month, we encourage everyone in the Church to carry out an act of righteousness by donating RM5.00 into the Fund. It is a free will love offering. A small token of appreciation in the form of a piece of cake, a potted plant, a handicraft or a bookmark will be given to each donor. We believe that your small donation will rise before God as a sweet remembrance just like Cornelius’ good deeds (Acts 10:4). We trust the LORD to provide or the poor and needy. When I asked the principal of the Kindergarten, Sis Soon Hoe, she agreed without any hesitation. Thank God she said ‘Yes.’ VOH : How many people have volunteered to help in this service so far? Ps Daniel : At the present moment, we have seven brothers and sisters who have volunteered to lead worship, give care, fetch people, usher, interpret, prepare food and etc. O n Saturday, 6th of August 2005, a special service began in the premises of our Little Lighthouse Child Development Centre, for some very special people. VOH interviewed Pastor Daniel Yap to find out more about this service. VOH : Ps Daniel can you tell us how this service came about? Ps Daniel : Well, at the beginning of this year, Sis Lee Ping and I led Sis Ah Kam’s mother to the Lord. Since she is not able to climb up the stairs to our church, we thought of introducing her to another church that is on the ground floor. But God’s strong conviction came on us both. God spoke to us, “I give you the souls but you are sending them away.” Feeling we had let God down, we realized we should do something to cater to people like Ah Kam’s mother. I began to recall names of brothers and sisters who have stopped coming to church because they were unable to climb the two flights of stairs, members like Bro Tiew, Ngai Choon, Bobby, Sis Ah Lin, Sis Jenny and others. That’s how the thought of a special service was birthed in our hearts. VOH : How long did the planning take? Ps Daniel : We started to pray and plan for the work since the beginning of the year. We sought the Lord for His vision, guidance and help. We looked for the right location, shared the vision with others and prepared amenities like carpets for the van to lay Bobby down comfortably, a ramp to facilitate the pushing of wheelchairs up the van. VOH : What is the target group for this service? Ps Daniel : Those who are physically disabled or unable to walk well, elderly members who cannot climb up the stairs and those who due to unavoidable reasons cannot attend Sunday worship. VOH : How did you look for a suitable venue? Ps Daniel : Initially, I looked for empty ground floor shop lots but did not find any to be suitable. During one elders’ meeting, VOH : How often are the services held? And is it going to be bilingual? Ps Daniel : At the moment, services are held on the first and third Saturday of the month, from 3.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. But when there is a regular number of 15 to 16 special members, we will meet every Saturday. Yes, it is going to be bilingual. The first service was only in Chinese because we have no interpreters. But thank God, two sisters have now volunteered to assist in this area. The target group for this service are the physically disabled, elderly members & those who have difficulty walking. VOH : How do you feel about the first service? Ps Daniel : I feel that God really loves all these members. He would not leave them nor forsake them, therefore He stirred our hearts to start this work so that they can keep the Sabbath, worship God, be encouraged by the Word and have fellowship with one another. It is really God’s will to have this service. He provided us the place and the manpower for the work. Here are members: feedbacks from Sis Ah Lin “ I am very happy to see my old church friends whom I have not seen for a long time.” Rachel “Bobby, my son, made a lot of happy sounds. It has been a long time since he last worshipped God with other members.” Ah Kam’s mother “I got ready very early and waited for my granddaughter to fetch me to the service. The worship songs were very touching.” Bro Tiew “Two weeks is too long a wait for the next service.” This ministry is looking for more drivers. Anyone who has a heart to help, please contact Ps. Daniel Yap, contack no: 42951700 or 016-3066726 Article 20 “W e are RESCUERS and not swimming clubs.” That was what Ps.T.T. Quah iterated in one of his messages during our church camp. We are to save souls of men and women, young and old, who are drowning in the sea of sin. We must share the gospel to the lost. It is urgent! The theme of our church this year also beckons us to know God and TO MAKE HIM KNOWN. Three quarters of the year has gone by, do you think as a church we have risen to God’s call to make Him known or personally have we risen from the status quo of club member to rescuer? We need to catch the fire and the spirit of evangelism. May the Holy Spirit ignite us with compassion and the spirit to share the Goodnews. So why, why should we evangelize? Perhaps in knowing the reasons for it all, we will rise to our call. Why Should We Evangelize? 1. Because of God’s heart a. John 3:16 “God loves the world and gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” b. 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise… but is longsuffering towards us, not willing that any should perish but all should come to repentance.” c. 1 Tim 2:3&4 “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” Look into God’s heart and see that it was never His will that anyone should die and burn eternally in hell. In fact, hell was not even meant for man originally but Satan and his fallen angels. God’s desire is for all to be saved. That’s why He was even willing for His Son, Jesus, to take the extreme punishment for our sin on the cross. Patiently He waits and waits for souls to turn to Him. When one does, heaven rejoices! 2. Because God commands it a. Matt 28:18-20 Then Jesus came and spoke to them saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always even to the end of the age.” Amen. b. Mark 16: 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. c. Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and in Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Then the master said to the servant, “Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” d. Lk14:23 The LORD’s orders have gone out to every single Christian. The command is to go and preach the gospel to every living person; to be His witnesses to the very end of the earth. It’s the LORD’s orders - the orders of the KING of kings - and it is meant to be obeyed for His house must be filled. Let’s take His orders seriously and obey them promptly. 3. Because Jesus set an example for us to follow a. Lk 4:18 The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed. b. Lk 5:32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. c. Lk 19:10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. d. Matt 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. See the life of Jesus while he walked the earth. He was always preaching the gospel and calling sinners to repentance. Have you read how He waited at a well to bring goodnews to a lost and lonely Samaritan woman; how he stopped in His tracks, The world’s population stands at a staggering figure of more than 6.4 billion, with approximately 200,000 babies born each day! looked up a sycamore tree and invited himself to Zacchaeus’ home to proclaim salvation to his household; how he would, without prejudice or fear of men, eat and drink with sinners in order to bring them to repentance? Jesus has given us an example that we should do as He has done. 4. Because the Harvest is ready and great a. Matt 9:36&37 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to the disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few.” b. Lk10:2 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few; therefore pray to the Lord of (Rescuers needed- Continued on page 21) Article & Story 21 (Rescuers needed- Continued from page 20) the harvest to send out labourers into the harvest.” c. John 4:35 Do you not say, “There are still four months and then comes the harvest? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” The world is a huge harvest field. The world’s population now stands at a staggering figure of more than 6.4 billion, with approximately 200 thousand babies born each day! It is quite overwhelming. The Lord asks that we lift up our eyes from our daily busy schedule and demands of life to see that the field is already ripe for harvest – hearts of men and women that are crying for an answer to life’s problems and ready to know the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. We don’t have to look very far to see the harvest, just look around you - unsaved family members, neighbours, classmates, colleagues… When we look at the unsaved, may our hearts move with compassion. 5. Because the Labourers are few a. Matt 9: 37&38 “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest.” b. Lk10:2 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few;…” The task is enormous but there are not enough workers. That is the stark reality. The church can no longer just depend on pastors, missionaries and fulltime workers alone to do the work of evangelism and hope that the world be reached for Christ. We must pray and pray that every Christian irrespective of age, gender, race, nationality, status or talents will answer the call to evangelize the lost, to see a huge end-time harvest of souls. We know that one person can not reach the whole world, but if each of us does our little part well, at our little corner of the world, we can make a big difference. Will you be one of them? 6. Because people need to hear the gospel to be saved Roms 10:13&14 For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? People can only be saved if they know the gospel and make a choice to respond to the love of God. If they don’t get to hear the gospel, they will perish in their sins. So it is extremely vital that everyone gets to hear the Goodnews. So who is going to tell them? Yes, every born-again Christian who has tasted the goodness of God, including you and I. We must keep on sharing so that more will have the opportunity to be saved. 7. Because of the condition concerning the second coming of the Lord Mt 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. We are all longing for Jesus to come and take us back to our new heavenly home. But there’s a condition to His return. Jesus won’t come back unless the gospel of the kingdom is preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations. Jesus wants every tribe, people’s group and nation to have the opportunity to hear the gospel. If we want to hasten our Lord’s return, let us go and preach the gospel. 8. Because God hold us accountable a. Ezekiel 3:17&18 “Son of man, I have made you a What’s Plan B? A ccording to a legend, when Jesus returned to heaven following his death on the cross and resurrection from the tomb, the angels gathered in amazement. They gazed at the wounds in His hands and feet, and shuddered to recall his suffering. Finally Gabriel spoke, “Master, You suffered terribly down there. Do they know and appreciate the extent of your sacrifice?” “No,” said Jesus. “Not yet. Right now only a handful of people in Palestine know.” “Then what have You done to let everyone else know?” asked Gabriel. “I’ve asked Peter, James and John, and a few others to spread the news. They will tell others who will tell others until the message spreads to the ends of the earth.” But Gabriel, knowing the nature of human beings, asked, “What is Plan B?” “I have no Plan B,” replied Christ. “There is no alternative strategy. I’m counting on them.” Twenty centuries later, He still has no other plan. He’s counting on you and me. watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from me. When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand.” b. Ezekiel 33:7&8 “So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for me. When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand.” If we know the truth and fail to warn the people about pending judgment, God holds us accountable for our failure to do so. But if we have done our part to warn the people and they choose not to take heed, they themselves will be responsible for their own decisions. We would not be held responsible. For us who know the truth, let’s start sounding the alarm and warn our loved ones, neighbours and friends… Make a decision today, if you haven’t already, to be a rescuer and not a club member. Get involved in the harvest of souls. Pray for the harvest, ask God for compassion, give out a tract, pass on a Christian CD, share your personal testimony, learn the skills of sharing the gospel or let your life bear a good testimony for Christ. As for our church, may the fire of evangelism ignite our hearts and together, we rise up to be a strong team of rescuers - bold, committed, undeterred - knowing that we will make a critical difference to someone’s eternal destiny. Go and Preach the Gospel. You’ll find it most rewarding! Article & Event 22 Evangelism Explosion A fter attending the 5 full days Evangelism Explosion (EE) Leadership Clinic from 18th to 22nd July,2005, the fire of evangelism was stirred in me in a new way. Besides the 3 people that I witnessed to as part of the training, thus far I had the joy of presenting the gospel message 10 times at the time of writing this article on 18th August - 8 times to individuals of whom 2 accepted the Lord and 2 times to groups of people. I think as far as I can remember, I have never presented the gospel to as many people in such a short period of time as this. The training of EE is very practical, teaching us how to share our personal testimony and to use simple but powerful illustrations to present the gospel clearly. We all know that the Lord commands us to share the gospel. We have heard many messages about it. But we are still not doing very much of it. Why? I think one of the main reasons is EE is not just about winning souls but ... making disciples that we don’t know how to do it confidently and in an inoffensive way. EE trains us little by little, step by step to do it confidently in a friendly, inoffensive manner. You can be assured that you won’t make enemies out of your friends. HGC will be implementing the 1st semester of EE training beginning 8th October 2005. It is a 13-week training programme. The weekly training is in 2 parts. Part 1 is classroom type teaching and Part 2 is On The Job (OJT) training. There are presently 4 trainers in HGC and each trainer is to train 2 trainees. So there will be 12 of us in 4 teams going out to share the gospel to church visitors, family members, relatives, friends, neighbours or even strangers. All 12 of us will enlist 2 prayer partners each to pray. So EE is really a partnership of many members for the Great Commission to be fulfilled. by Ps Khor After the 1st semester training we will implement the 2nd and the 3rd and the 4th ….. with the vision that every member will be trained to share the gospel confidently and in an effective and inoffensive manner. There are really many wonderful benefits of implementing EE training. Here are a few main ones. 1. The Great Commission can be carried out by the church in an effective, practical and workable way. 2. EE is not just about winning souls but it is about making disciples. In EE we can fulfill 2 Tim 2:2 in a practical way. We can train disciples who will train disciples who will train disciples who will train disciples….. 3. As the trainees go out to share the gospel, their conviction about the gospel gets strengthened and their faith will grow by leaps and bounds. 4. The church will certainly grow by winning the lost. 5. Members trained in EE will naturally look out for new visitors to the church to get to know them, to help them to have assurance of salvation or to present the gospel message to them. In this way the friendship level in the church will certainly be raised. 6. EE engages prayer partners for the trainers and trainees. In doing so the prayer life of more members will be developed. Prayer partners will also be more focused and specific in their prayer life. They will be praying for the trainer, trainee and also prospects that they will be witnessing to. There is a population explosion taking place in Ampang. But praise the Lord, there will be an Evangelism Explosion taking place too!!! Heavenly Singing by Lim Chin Nee T he Hope of Glory Centre was very blessed by the presentation from the Korean Open Church Choir on 2nd July 2005 at 7 p.m. They gave an amazing and excellent performance, singing both beautifully and powerfully. As they sang, the meaning of the songs came alive, touching and ministering to the core of our hearts. Everyone who came, both young and old, thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and was truly encouraged by the songs. We must also commend the choir master for the lively and vibrant way she led the choir. It was very inspiring. God’s presence was felt throughout the whole presentation. In fact, it was much more than a presentation, it was a wonderful time praising and exalting the Lord. At the end, our faith was stirred up and our eyes saw Jesus, our Master, even more clearly. Story & New Ministry 23 How Norman Geisler began witnessing Prayer Mobilisation S ome years ago, theologian Norman Geisler wrote a candid article in which he said, “I have a confession to make. I was a director for a Christian youth organization for three years, a pastor for nine years, a Bible College teacher for six years, and in all that time I did not witness for Jesus Christ. I scarcely ever shared my faith one-to-one with other people.” Geisler offered several reasons for this: He didn’t think he had the gift of evangelism. He felt instead his gift was that of teaching the Word to those who were already Christians. He had read a book about evangelism and God’s sovereignty that had turned away his zeal for “Lead me to some souls today, O teach me, Lord, just what to say.” personal evangelism. He had known someone who had practiced impersonal, cold turkey evangelism, and Geisler had determined that “lifestyle” evangelism was more desirable. But as a result, he lived a Christian life but seldom vocalized his witness to an unsaved person. Eventually, Geisler became convicted by the words of a little song that said, “Lead me to some souls today, O teach me, Lord, just what to say.” Those words became a sincere prayer for him, and his life began to change. One day, having prayed that prayer, he was approached by a girl from college where he taught. She had spiritual needs in her life, and he was able to lead her to Christ. (She later went to South America as a missionary.) Shortly afterward, Geisler volunteered to participate in a Monday night visitation programme at his church. On his first outing, he found himself knocking on the door of a man who turned out to be an atheist. “Do you mind if I ask you a very serious spiritual question?” asked Geisler, when the man came to the door. After a long conversation and a couple of visits, the man prayed to receive Christ into his heart. (He is now a deacon in a church with his family committed to Christ as well.) Now Geisler says, “The most rewarding experiences I’ve had in my Christian life have not come from teaching, pastoring or ministering around the world. They have come from meeting with non-Christians and seeing one after another come to know Christ.” by Nitta Arul T he HGC Prayer Mobilisation was launched on 15th May 2005. Altogether, 59 HGCians signed up to be part of the Prayer Mobilisation Team. Since the launch of the Prayer Mobilisation, we have seen some breakthroughs in the lives of HGCians. The very first prayer request was for a baby, En Yu, Brother Eng Yaw’s daughter. She was turning blue after her feeds but after the prayers that were sent up for her, she was fine the very next day and was discharged from the hospital. We also prayed for several others who were hospitalized like Gloria (Sister Amy Lim’s daughter) , Sow Ying, Jonathan Liew, Sis Mary, Brother Eng Yaw and Brother Arul as well as other members who were ill. God has been very good and so faithful to us. As He has promised, when we trust Him, pray and walk in His ways, His ears are open to our cries and He has indeed heard from heaven and answered our prayers for these ones. All of them are well now. One outstanding case was that of Brother Eng Yaw who had dengue fever and his blood count was seriously low at 50 on the 1st of August 2005. The normal blood count is 150. After we went on our knees in prayer, his blood count became normal the next day and he was discharged from the hospital on the 3rd of August 2005. This is an amazing miracle that came about as a result of the many prayers that were sent up for Brother Eng Yaw. We also heard of the persecution of the Toilkupi church in Bangladesh and sent out the prayer requests to all the team members. Brother Jeffrey Oo testified that after our prayers, the persecution stopped. Praise the Lord!! When we bow in prayer before God, putting our dependence and trust in Him, we will experience God and His divine hands at work. E very year when I fast, I would just pray generally. But for this year, I was determined to fast and pray for fire, power and strength. So on 22nd July 2005, the first day of the fast, I settled down to concentrate and be focus. I praised, worshipped, prayed and waited on the Lord. To my amazement, I went on praising & singing in the spirit for a long time. I could feel my I could feel my spirit man being charged up. spirit man being charged up. I felt very full inside of me. I waited on the Lord and the Lord spoke to me. After that, I felt I was on fire and ready to go out to share. I called up my mother in Ipoh and asked if she was fasting. She told me that she wasn’t because her spirit was willing but her flesh was weak. I decided to tell her about my experience and the fire within me. Wow! To my surprise, she got the fire from me too and she started to fast and pray, from the following day until now, at this time of writing. Praise the Lord! I’m looking forward to share with others and to encourage others about this fire. I find myself more on fire to share the gospel with others. I overcame my reservations and was even bold enough to give a Happy Man’s Club CD and a tract to a doctor whom I visited. Amen! God Answers Prayer by Anne Yap I have a recurrence of a small ganglion (a cystic swelling) on my right wrist in late 2003. One afternoon on 16th May 2005, I noticed that the lower part of my right wrist was a bit swollen and something that looked like gel was flowing down from it. In the evening, I prayed to the Lord to wash away the growth with His precious blood after which I put a medicated plaster over it. The following day I did the same thing. On the third day before I went out, I rubbed some analgesic cream on it. Later that afternoon, I noticed that the gel-like discharge had stopped. Thank You Lord for answering my prayer. I am very happy to share my testimony about God’s wonderful grace through this issue of the Voice of Hope. I want to express my praise and honour to Him for He is the true, living and faithful God who knows our needs. He does not want us to live life in vain but instead He wants us to experience Him and His power through prayer. When we put our faith in Him and do not doubt what we ask of Him, we will receive what we ask. Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! God wants us to experience Him & His power through prayer. Every morning after washing up, I will have my ‘devotion’ - a time to draw close and commune with God, to pray and tell Him all my needs. I know the Lord hears every prayer of mine and answers them. I have experienced His peace and comfort often in the midst of trials. Yes, even as I recall all that had happened, I can see His mighty hand leading me. Hallelujah! Praise and thanks be to God! God is truly faithful and merciful. He helped my youngest daughter to find a good husband – a trustworthy and responsible young man who has a desire and willingness to seek God. God brought them together as husband and wife so that they may follow Jesus all the way. Hallelujah! The Lord had also through His healing grace, healed my husband. That trying time brought my husband closer to God and now he is fully committed to Jesus, His Saviour and Lord. All praise and glory to God! At the beginning of this year, I had a problem with my thumb*. It was difficult and painful to both bend and straighten my thumb. I went to see several doctors who told me that the only solution for my problem was surgery. I was not willing to do that, so I prayed to God for healing. Hoe Chai, my son-in-law, also prayed for me earnestly. After praying, I stopped seeing any doctor. As I continued to look to God in prayer, God’s healing came to me a few months later. I was unaware of it at first but one day I discovered with joy that there was no more pain in my thumb when I bent or stretched it. If God had not healed my thumb, I would not even be able to write this testimony. Hallelujah! I hope that brothers and sisters reading this testimony will be stirred up in their faith. Our God is a great and faithful God. Just believe in Him, ask in faith without doubting and He will give you what you need. All glory to God. (* This condition is called Trigger Thumb. It affects the movement of the tendons as they bend the thumb toward the palm of the hand. The symptoms include pain and a funny clicking sensation when the finger or thumb is bent. Very little can be done, short of surgery, once a thumb has developed triggering.) Testimonies 25 F asting and prayer had been a routine for me ever since I came to know the Lord. Mondays are family corporate fasting for us. All my children fast and pray on this day. Besides that, I fast on Fridays too. During last year’s 40-day fasting and prayer, I had an unusual experience. At that time, I was already fasting everyday but God stirred my heart to fast for three consecutive days without food and water. Being an obedient child, I followed. On the last night of the fast, I could not sleep, so I started praying. God came and As we subdue the flesh... signs and wonders will await us showed me the verse from Isaiah 58: 6, “Is this not the fast that I have chosen to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free. And that you break every yoke?” The Spirit of God was upon me and I cried and wept. God began to speak to me and reveal things to me. My breakthroughs had come through fasting and prayer. God has given me one of the most effective weapons against Satan, fasting and prayer. As we subdue the flesh, our spirit man will rise up, signs and wonders will await us and God’s power and glory manifested through us. All glory to Jesus Christ! F or the past 22 years, as a diabetic patient I have been enduring two insulin injections a day. I am also plagued by a host of other physical ailments- kidney problem, high blood pressure and heart problem. Even my teeth “refused” to remain in my mouth. For one reason or other, all my teeth fell off one by one. Nevertheless, despite the constant pain, I am always thankful to the Lord. Before I get up each morning, I will praise Him for giving me another precious day to live. Truly by HIS stripes I have been healed. It is common knowledge that the nerves of diabetics can malfunction because of chemical abnormalities associated with high glucose levels or because of damage to the tiny blood vessels that feed the nerves. The ‘nerve damage’ decreased the pain sensation in my feet and because I could not sense normal pain, a small injury on my left foot then my right, soon became gaping wounds. For the past 5 months, I have been walking around in such horrendous condition. The doctor cautioned that amputation would be the only solution if the wounds did not heal. However, I was never afraid because I always knew that God was with me. Both Pastor Khor and Bro Timothy laid hands upon me and prayed for divine healing. Immediately, I felt heat all over my body and great peace flooded my whole being. Many prayers were also offered on my behalf by my brothers and sisters in my life group. I truly appreciate it. I am especially grateful to Bro Timothy and Sis Ruth for their fervent love and care. Today I can testify that truly by His stripes I have been healed. New skin has grown over where the wounds used to be. Both feet are healed! Thank you Jesus! 21 st of May 2005 was a special day for my wife, Ruby and me because God blessed us with a beautiful baby girl. It was on that wonderful Saturday night that our daughter, Yap En Yu was born. We could not keep our eyes off her. She slept so peacefully. In fact, she slept through the whole night without waking up even once for her feed. The next day, both our parents came to visit her, and when they heard that En Yu hadn’t been fed since she was born, we were admonished to feed her immediately. However, her lips turned bluish after the feed. We rang for the nurse and at the same time called up the church to pray for our precious newborn. The nurse patted En Yu on the back for awhile and she was alright. They immediately laid hands on her & prayed Shortly after the nurse left, En Yu turned blue again, and this time we really panicked. Thank God for Pastor Daniel and some church members who arrived at that particular moment. They immediately laid hands on En Yu and prayed for her. Ruby and I just want to give thanks to our Father God for En Yu’s quick recovery. Praise the Lord too for since then there has been no recurrence. Youth Talk Hi , I am Calvin. It is a generation in which the basic family structure is threatened day after day, parents are overwhelmed and confused about what it means to be a parent; children are looking for moral values and guidance from their peers; and our teens are inundated by tremendous pressures. Deuteronomy 6:1-15 give us a model of a godly family structure – God’s plan as to who is to teach His truths to succeeding generations and how they are to be taught; the need of godly parents and grandparents - to fear, love, thank and worship God, and in so doing have wholesome lives which leave deep spiritual impression on the children and grandchildren . appeared to him in the burning bush some forty years earlier was the one and only God who was powerful enough to break the chains of their slavery in Egypt to make them free men, women and children of God. It is the fear that springs from recognizing that He is God, our Creator, and we are His creation. It is the fear that comes from recognizing that it is He who gives us the very next breath of life on this earth, and as a result we find our hearts filled with love for Him and thankfulness to Him. We are to live out our lives in the fear of the Lord, and teach our children and grandchildren about the one and only living God who loves us and wants us to love Him in return. It is the fear that springs from recognising that He is God, our Creator, and we are His creation. LOVE YOUR GOD - Deuteronomy 6:4-9 How should we respond to this all-powerful, unique God? 1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 2. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 3. To teach our children His word. 4. To surround our lives with His word. THANK YOUR GOD - Deuteronomy 6:10-12 “...Be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” Moses needed to remind these two million Jews that the God of Abraham who had by trusting, loving, obeying, praising, surrendering, using our talents for his glory, and developing a close friendship with Him. It is NOT just for church services. What you normally do for yourself, you begin doing for God, whether it is eating, bathing, working, relaxing, or taking out the trash! CONCLUSION This is a most difficult time to be living in a fallen world if you are a parent of a secondary school or college student. Many Christian and non-Christian parents are confused and ill-prepared to deal with the many evil forces that are moving into our communities. What are we to do? Let’s ask the Lord to challenge our hearts to be willing to leave a deep spiritual impression on ... OUR GEN X’ERS. Youth Wave 28 10 June 2005, 8:00 p.m. The Hope of Glory Centre, Ampang. Crowded with smiling faces, the 2nd sanctuary was buzzing with the laughter and chatter of youths. Knapsacks and bags of all sorts plopped carelessly on all sides of the area added to the unperturbedly confusing scene. Certain youths were studiously flipping through their bibles, trying hard to memorize last-minute details with absolute and rare fervour. Chuckling quietly to myself, I knew it was going to be a wonderful time… For those who attended the bible quiz cum jungle at Alang Sedayu, you’d know what I’m babbling about. Those who missed it, tough luck! Coz’ we had a BLASTIN’ FUN time!!! So if you haven’t heard enough from the others, here’s what you missed out! Beginning with a simple ice breaker to warm things up, we carried on to the worship session. Following that was the bible quiz! The youths were then divided into their own groups along with some of those from the Bread Givers life group. Among the time of fellowship before huddling off to bed. 11 June 2005, 7:00 a.m. The next day. Shuffling sleepily with tousled hair and crumpled outfits, the youths gathered around for Morning Prayer. Hushed prayers were uttered like a gentle breath while voices rose in songs of thankfulness, reverence and awe to the Most High... Day 2 began with Morning Prayer and a short session of bible study before we broke out for breakfast at the nearby coffee shops and mamak stalls. Later on, we packed up our bags and set off to Alang Sedayu, Gombak! Amidst the laughter, we learned much & were reminded of the importance of knowing & understanding God’s word. There, we met up with our guide who gave us a long list of the Dos and Don’ts in the jungle. He concluded with a word of caution about “spirits” that dwelled in the jungle. So after saying a short prayer of protection and a quick mosquito repellent applying session, we headed towards the Great Unknown!! challenges put together by Calvin, a particularly unforgettable one that kept many of us groaning anxiously was where every group was handed a memory verse. The first team that managed to send out a representative who could recite the entire verse, word for word would be awarded points. It drove us nuts. Every single person there chanted the verses over and over again as though their lives depended on it! Calvin later told us the purpose of this activity was that we should not take for granted a single word in the bible as each word had its own significance. We also had bible verse charades and a crossword. All in all, amidst the laughter, we learned much and were also reminded of the importance of knowing and understanding God’s word. Finally at nearly 11 p.m. the quiz ended with Chosen Ones emerging as the victor followed closely by Cilipadi, Chosen Ones and Kopitiam LG. We then had supper and an awesome The climb was long but not too difficult. Resting every 10 minutes, we were still sweating. And finally after about an hour or so of toiling... behold, the Alang Sedayu waterfall, Gombak! We looked up at the water crashing downwards, roaring like a mighty beast, admiring the beauty and magnificence of it all. We watched the first of us step beneath the waterfall with a gleeful laugh, partly admiring his courage and partly thinking he was crazy. But when his face emerged again, happily drenched, others followed suit. After a brief moment of hesitation, I plucked up my courage and treaded gingerly towards the water… Veni, vidi, vici! We came, we saw, we conquered! There at the waterfall, we rested and splashed around. It was a wonderful place to cool off. Some sat around the rocks to chat while few played games in the water. And after we had had our fill of rest and fun we set off home. Prophecies & Home Event 29 Help us O Lord to believe in You “I will build my church.” by Amy Lim b by Roger Lim 21st August 2005 21st August 2005 As we were praying that morning, the word “UNBELIEVED” kept on popping out in me, and the stirring grew stronger and stronger. Matt 16:18 When Jesus said, “I will build my church,” He’s not talking about new carpets, new curtains, new sound system. He’s talking about you and me. He’s building us and the gates of hell shall not prevail against us. This is because He has given us ALL authority in heaven , on earth and under the earth. God is building us in our situation, using our circumstances, using people. He’s building us to become stronger and more beautiful. Don’t succumb to the lies of the devil. There are no weak Christians in this church, only ignorant Christians. Those who know Matt 16:18 will allow God to build them and they shall be overcomers instead of being “overcome.” Agree with God and say, “God will build _____ (your name) and the gates of hell shall not prevail against _____(your name). Amen. “God, forgive us, Forgive us for our unbelieving heart, Forgive us for not believing You, God. Help us O Lord to believe in You, Believe in what You said, Believe in Your word, every single word, Change us and mould us, Lord, Let our heart believe in every word that You said. Lord, we want to believe in You, Lord, we want to believe in every word You said, For we know that Your word is power, In this season, Your people will rise up because they believe in You.” As I prayed, I had this understanding: “We hear the word, read the word but did not acknowledge the word. We are not serious about every single word that God said. We are contented with what we have in life. We are able to handle some on our own, therefore we are not entirely dependent on God’s word and live by the word. 31st August 2005, as the whole nation went on holiday to celebrate her 48th birthday, a group of HGCians forsook their day of rest to avail themselves to spring clean the church. We really want to appreciate this bunch of volunteers for the sacrifice they made and of course, for the good work they did. Children and adults worked hand in hand. They cleaned and cleared out the back staircase, wiped the plastic chairs till they were squeaky clean, put in order our overly cluttered store room, Y A D A H by Tham Soon Hoe 20th August 2005, Saturday Morning Prayer “YADAH” - this word came to me 3 times. When I asked God what it meant these words appeared. “You Are Delivered And Healed” removed and boxed up all the books and materials in the library all ready for its expansion....the list goes on. Even the air was not left out. Bro Tay brought a big air purifier, to remove dust particles from the air in our sanctuary and office. Thank God for cleaner air. How interesting too, to observe the way HGCians work: some just worked in silence with total concentration, while others had fun while they worked, chatting and laughing as their hands did the work. Whatever it was, the work got done. After half a day of hard work, almost everyone sat down to fellowship and enjoy a meal of chicken rice, courtesy of HGC. Then it was time to go...Ahh! It was not too late, there’s still time to catch some Merdeka Day festivity. Humour & Recipe 30 I’m Afraid They’ll Sit Up Curry Chicken A pastor went for a haircut one day. His barber was a young Muslim woman. In the course of their conversation, he told her he was a pastor, that he believed in Jesus, and that later in the day he was going to conduct a funeral. She replied, “Once I was supposed to cut a dead man’s hair. They were going to pay me $150, but I wouldn’t do it.” by Mary Letchumi “Why not?” “I don’t like to touch the dead. I’m afraid they’ll sit up.” “I know one who did,” said the pastor. “Ugh! You’re kidding.” “No, I’m not,” he replied. Then he told her about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. When his haircut was done, she asked, “Are you going to keep coming here?” “Yeah, I’ll come back.” She said, “I’d like to know more.” Sins of Omission “What are the sins of omission?” asked a Sunday school teacher. One little boy raised his hand. “Those are the sins we should have committed,” he said, “...and didn’t.” For Fast Relief A recent church ad had a picture of two hands holding stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed with a caption reading: “For fast, fast relief take two tablets.” Trying Not to “What are you doing, son? the shopkeeper asked a little boy whose eyes were on a large basket of apples outside the store front. “Trying to steal one of those apples?” “No sir,” replied the boy. “I’m trying not to.” Chopsticks Once there was a Chinese prince who died and was given a glimpse of both heaven and hell. First he was escorted to hell, where he found tables laden with various foods and delicacies, but the people were sitting there angry and frustrated, quarrelling with each other. They were not permitted to pick up the food with their fingers, and they couldn’t feed themselves because the chopsticks they were given were ten feet long. Then the prince was taken to heaven. Again he found a beautiful banquet, and again only ten-foot chopsticks. But here the people were happy and content, for they sat on opposite sides of the tables, each one feeding the person across from him. He loves you so much He was willing to die on the cross and shed His blood for your sins. His blood can wash and cleanse away our every sin. He was willing to suffer so that everyone who believes in Him will not die and go to hell but will have eternal life. Not only did He die for our sins, but He also took our sufferings and carried our sorrows. He also bore our sicknesses. He was wounded so that we can receive our healing. He also came to give us abundant life (life in fullness and abundance). He is a good God who cares for us and is able to meet our every need. Would you like to believe in Jesus? Would you like your sins forgiven and have an abundant and eternal life? Would you like to have peace with God? All you need to do is open your heart to Him and say the prayer below. He will immediately come into your life and be your Saviour and Lord. “Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for me. I believe in You and confess that You are Lord. I open the door of my heart to You. Please come into my heart and be my Lord and Saviour. I ask that You forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Precious blood. Please take control of my life and help me to love You and be the person You want me to be. In Jesus Name, Amen.” If you have said this prayer, praise the Lord. Your sins are forgiven and you are now a child of God.
