PERFORMANCES PERFORMANCES I LIKE TO WATCH TOO SATURDAY 12th JULy 2008 I LIKE TO WATCH TOO SATURDAY 12th JULy 2008 COMPANY Hiroaki Umeda In Act the artists lock their lurid gazes onto one of the major minefields of ‘gender trouble’, the art of the striptease. Act isn’t so much a striptease, as a dissection of the many gestures that co-define the pleasurable art of disrobing and denuding. While Going to a Condition describes experiences that redefine the sensation of space and other sensory perceptions, Time, punctuated by silences, dilates and triggers a sense of disorientation, while video, used as a source of light, creates a magnetic force. Umeda is himself a performer able to exude an unusual and powerful magnetism. His dance borrows from hip-hop and butoh and combines fluidity with jerkiness to create very personal body movements. Umeda’s work, at once minimal and radical, subtle and violent, is recognized as being deeply engaged with the traditions and contemporary reality of Japan. Creation and performance by Alexandra Bachzetsis, Tina Bleuler, Lies Vanborm Coproduction Kanton Zürich, Kulturstiftung Pro-Helvetia, Pact Zollverein Essen Management We Love Productions Contact Sarah De Ganck While Going to a Condition was presented at the Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales (France) and was hailed as “a visual and sensorial experience...The discovery of a young artist, both original and promising.” Umeda’s work has been presented at cutting-edge dance festivals: Japan Dance Festival (Korea), Yokohama Dance Collection (Japan), Uovo e Contemporanea (Italy), FIND Festival (Canada). Company S20 Choreography Hiroaki Umeda Dancer Hiroaki Umeda Sound & Visual Creation S20 BILL COWIE WArd/waRD – Ann Van den Broek “I am the ground, I am the earth, I am the soil, and into me your coldness stole, till I am solid and brittle” Co(te)lette is based on the unquenchable hunger and uncontrollable desire for physical and mental satisfaction. A desire that awakens dormant urges demanding movement and action. This is an intimate piece for t hree female dancers caught in a vicious circle spinning them between moments of desire and fulfilment. There is no confrontation, no rivalry, and no narrative – there is no solution, and no end. Co(te)lette has been nominated for a Zwaan by the VSCD as “the most impressive dance production” of the 2007/2008 season. In the Flesh The audience, wearing blue/red anaglyph 3d glasses, may be surprised to see a dancer on the ground below them. While she appears to be actually in the space, she is, in fact, a projection - but there she is, solid, real, ‘in the flesh’. At the end of her four-minute dance, she fades once again - into nothing. Billy Cowie is a Scottish composer/choreographer/filmmaker who works in dance/theatre performance, screen dance and installation. In collaboration with Liz Aggiss, he has made over twenty live performance pieces for the company Divas Dance Theatre, who have toured extensively in Europe. Cowie has also completed five major screen projects. He is currently Principal Research Fellow at the University of Brighton. excerpts of Co(te)lette Concept and Choreography Ann Van den Broek Dancers Cecilia Moisio, Theodossia Stathi, Judit Ruiz Onandi Dramaturge Marc Vanrunx Music Arne Van Dongen Music editing and mix Arne Van Dongen, Yves De Mey Lighting design Bernie van Velzen Produced by WArd/waRD vzw Co-produced by CC Berchem (Antwerp), Korzo productions (The Hague) Financial Support by the Government of Flanders and the Department of Culture of the City of Antwerp Photo: Maarten Vanden Abeele Company is a threesome based in Switzerland and Belgium that brings together the artists Alexandra Bachzetsis, Tina Bleuler and Lies Vanborm. Weiter A nimble body suspended in the void at the centre of the universe: the body’s incomplete wings overcome gravity for a split second. Then, the triumphant plunge before the final, fatal embrace. What goes on in the head of a person falling, in that short instant, in that eternity between heaven and earth? Forever Overhead shows the body out of balance: a drawing done in movement about the art of falling. The performer is a pawn in a game between body and mind. His body reverberates with chaotic and explosive motion, carried along in high tempo by energy, sound and his instincts. From 1999 Gruwez danced with Troubleyn/Jan Fabre and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui of Les Ballets C de la B. She has been creating her own work since 2006. Moving between silence and violence, T.r.a.s.h. has developed a disturbing inventory of work, culminating with Weiter, a 25-minute trailer for four performers and a cello. This performance, impressions of earlier work, sets the scene on a more sober stage. Four eccentric characters are caught in a vortex of death, love and violence. Heutiger Tag ist sehr, ganz spezieller Tag. T.r.a.s.h. zooms in...for the close-up. Judith Nab - Théâtre Espace Trembling Chairs (installation) Young performers as well as experienced artists enter onto the stage to show what moves people and how people move. The attitude and mentality of the performers plays a major role in the dance, as does, of course, the beat of the Afro-American dance tradition. Don’t Hit Mama is inspired by club dance from America and draws also from the language and principles of African dance. The work of Don’t Hit Mama, lead by Nita Liem and Bart Deuss, characterizes celebration, dance, and the awareness of man’s open-minded and capricious lifestyles. Speak to me Look, all the chairs are trembling now. Speak to me Everything is trembling now… Where are you? Stop trembling Judith Nab creates visual theatre performances and installations using many forms of mixed media, such as moving objects, optical (and mental) illusions, film, video and light projections, voice-samples, objects, dance and music. She has worked specifically in site-specific venues to create her recent “plays without actors in abandoned houses”. Mischa van Teeffelen The Ready Maids Tea-act In her choreographies, Monique Duurvoort uses hip hop, pop ‘n lock, street and breakdance - elements from diverse Urban dance styles. Before becoming a choreographer, Monique worked for thirteen years as a professional dancer with the Dutch National Ballet. Besides her passion for academic and modern dance, Monique has always has been interested in dance styles that have their roots in ‘the street’. In 2007, the jury of the “Nederlandse Dansdagen” awarded her the most talented young choreographer prize. The tea-act is developed and performed by The Ready Maids, a group of performers who specialize in presenting food in a particularly theatrical way. Mr. BroekjeVol (Bas Kosters) and Mrs. BloesjeVol (Shirley Hart) give the Amsterdam fashion and dance scene some fresh and filthy allure with their dj duo performances. They have performed at various parties for Mercedes Benz Duth Fashion Award, Streetlab Festival, Le Freak Fashion Feast and Joost van Bellen’s own 10 Years Of Meubelstukken Festival. Propelled by enormous energy, they will surprise you with a mix of Disco, Italo, Club, Electro and Rock. Kareem Raïhani Since 2004, fuelled by a hunger for new inspirations and after some busy years on the dance circuit, Kareem’s new productions find him travelling through his Moroccan roots into a voyage through the global labyrinths of ‘world music’. Taking full advantage of his technical knowledge, the result, thus far, is a dynamic fusion of raw tumbling beats through which the inspirational rhythms and voices of the world meet the innovations of technology. DJ Alec Smart aka Streamer His sound can be described as Big-Funk-Mash-Up-Hip-Break-Disco-Quality-Music. Gorgeous to listen to, infectious to dance to; his broad music tastes, his technique and mixing skills, his enthusiasm and turntable showmanship are all qualities that make him a refreshing change to the many purist but predominantly monotone DJ’s out there. His philosophy: keep them entertained, not only dancing! Fun runs through all he does!
