Boys Scouts Troop 14 of
Stockton is looking for new

troop has been active for the

plant’s shutdown from Friday
February 22 through Sunday
March 3.
“District staff has created
detailed plans of the shutdown
process, including maintenance work that will take
place during the shutdown,”
said district consultant Kevin
Kauffman. “The shutdown
process will be very complicated and involved. The lockout/tagout procedure will be

Some rather-old vehicles in Linden
Linden businessman Fernando Angel has a link to the
past.
He has two old vehicles, one
from 1959, the other a true
antique from 1926.
He purchased the 1959
Ford Fairlane 500 and is restoring it little by little. It runs
fine and he drives it everyday.
His other restored vehicle is
a 1926 Graham Brothers
truck. The truck was produced before the days of electric starters, so Angel must
use a hand crank to start the
engine.
Windshield wiper? No problem, but the driver must move
it back and forth with their
hand while holding the steering wheel with the other hand.
Air conditioning? Sure, just
open the beveled windshield
slightly and let the breeze

through the cab. Top speed is
about 40 miles per hour, slow
enough to allow flying insects
to get out of the way.
Angel has the vehicles stored
at his shop at the corner of
Highway 26 and North Market
Street (next to the Linden Lions Club Hall) and encourages

as a hate crime and brought
attention to the lack of hatecrime laws in the USA, including Wyoming.
The play is based on numerous interviews of Laramie residents conducted by members
of the Tectonic Theater Project,
as well as journal entries,
news reports and other documents.
Eight actors in the original
play portray more than 60
characters is a series of short
scenes.
Russell Henderson and
Aaron McKinney, who were in
their early 20s when they
murdered Mr. Shepard, are
both serving two life sentences
in a Wyoming state prison.
Testimony at McKinney’s
trial showed that McKinney
and Henderson lured Shepard
from a Laramie bar, pistolwhipped him and left him tied
to a fence outside of town.
Shepard was found some 18
hours later by a passer-by and
died in a hospital five days
later on Oct. 12, 1998.
The jury’s decision was
slightly split because it rejected a first-degree murder
charge. The acquittal on that
charge apparently was based
on the jury’s determination
that the Shepard murder was
not planned in advance.
Defense attorneys had argued that McKinney experienced “gay panic,” brought on
by an advance from the 21year-old Mr. Shepard, a student at the University of Wyoming. It triggered memories of
childhood sexual abuse, they
claimed, and sent McKinney
into a deadly rage. But the
strategy seemed to crumble
when the judge barred the use
of the controversial defense.
The defense attorney told
the jury that his client never
intended for Shepard to die,
that drugs clouded his thinking and that he is so hapless
his friends call him “Dopey.”
It was a starkly different portrayal than the prosecution
painted of McKinney as a
“cold-blooded savage” who
along with a friend preyed on
Mr. Shepard like a wolf.
Attorneys argued that the
act was premeditated and deserved a conviction of first-degree murder. “What is most
striking is not that Matthew
Shepard is homosexual, but
that he is frail and small and
if anyone was born to be a victim in this case it was Matthew
Shepard,” the Albany County,
Wyoming district attorney Cal
Rerucha told jurors.

A stranger soon
becomes a friend The Sower

I just love it when one meets
someone and finds that instant comfortable connection.
It isn’t as if you’ve just met,
but like meeting an old friend
wearing a different body. A
bizarre description, but accurate summing up the experience.
Years ago, when I first met
Emil, I felt I’d known him forever. It was comfortable and
disconcerting at the same
time. From our very-first conversation there was a sort of
shorthand at work between us
that is rare to encounter. That
sense of “rightness” is amazing. I once told Emil I never
felt I had to “edit” myself
around him. His reply, “Why
would you—that’s not who
you are.”
I find myself wondering exactly what it is that allows
some of us to instantly “click”
in this way. It doesn’t happen
often enough to become expected or boring. There
doesn’t seem to be a common
denominator, or single thread
that neatly explains who or
how it happens. I try not to
think over the phenomenon
but just to enjoy the bond
when it pops up like a bouquet
springing from a magician’s
hat.
It is a magical thing that I
can’t explain in logical pedantic terms. For me, it’s as if I’ve
found time travel is truly as
simple as stepping into Dr.
Who’s phone both or that a
unicorn really is in the garden
munching on roses. Both
magical and mysterious, there
is no way to explain the feeling and do it justice. Those
who have experienced this instant connection between two
people do know. Those of you
who haven’t can only try to
imagine the feeling.
Most of us know someone
well enough that the curve of
an eyebrow, a tone of voice, or
a sigh can speak volumes. We
generously reach that state of
understanding slowly and over
a matter of time pick clues to
“reading” a person.
It may be easy, difficult or
every once in awhile immediate. No reason and no thought
required—just kaboom! There
that connection is, right in
your face. I do not understand
how or why it happens. I’m
just thankful it does and take
delight in the experience.
Re-set internal clock

Have you ever wondered
why you tend to wake up at
the same time without an
alarm clock, fall asleep about
the same time or get hungry
about the same hour each
day?
The answer is due to your
circadian rhythm or biological
clock found deep in the brain’s
hypothalamus. Our amazing
clocks are highly intertwined
with physiological and behavioral processes. They routinely
manage our 24-hour sleep/
wake cycle with brain wave
activity, hormone production
and cell regeneration.
But our internal clocks don’t
adjust well to new routines.
Biological clocks have a profound effect on when we go to
sleep, eat and wake, but also
on mental and physical
health.
The inner workings of our
clocks are high-tech machines. One good example is
the daily night-time routine.
As night falls the clock is in
high operational mode as it
begins to slow the body for
sleep, lowering body temperature, and releasing the hormone melatonin that makes
us feel sleepy.
The clock is ‘programmed’ to
react to light and darkness
and the daily departure of the
sun-essential for our bodies to
function throughout a busy
day.
Creatures of habit
Our internal clocks keep us
on track. Without the intricate
balance, we’d have jet lag more
often than not. Sluggishness,
insomnia, lost appetite, and an
awful feeling of being “out of
it,” are natural consequences
of jet lag, a frequent discomfort of travelers. When you
travel across time zones and
it’s 10 p.m. back home, your
internal clock will have you
wanting to go to bed no matter what the local time is, even
if it’s noon locally.
Even though our clocks do
not adapt well to interruptions
in daily routines, did you know
our circadian rhythm can be
reset, making good sleep possible?
There are many situations
when our clocks may be out
of sync with daily life. If you
go to bed much later than
usual, take a different job that
requires you to work at night,
or act as a personal caregiver
to a friend which results in
interrupted patterns of sleep,
you’ll probably have problems
adjusting your circadian

say, so he stuck his finger in

The Psalmist was telling his
friends how the Lord was
greater than their grief, stronger than their sins, better than
the best and sweeter than the
sweetest. But they couldn't
quite understand.
Finally he said in Psalm
34:8, "0 taste and see that the
Lord is good."
When Henry Ford pur chased a large insurance
policy, the newspapers carried
it in their headlines.
One story was read by an old
friend. He called and asked,
"Why didn't you buy that
policy from me?"
"Because," said Henry Ford,
"you didn't ask me."
Can this be the reason why
your friend hasn't come to the
Lord?
Moses invited his friends,
"Everyone who is on the Lord's
side, come here."
St. John gave the last invitation in the last chapter of the
Bible: "Come, whoever is
thirsty; accept the water of life
freely."
The Bible is full of appeals.
Shouldn't you, then, invite
others to the Lord?

Let’s go fishing
What’s happening
in the outdoor world?

With surface water temperatures hovering around 47
to 48 degrees very little
striped bass activity to report
with exceptions of several 19
to 21-inchers coming out of
Horseshoe Bend on the backside of Decker Island off Highway 160. Both fish were
caught on frozen shad in 25
feet of water on the afternoon
outgoing tide.
Two bites and two fish were
reported by Brentwood angler
Stan Koenigsberger one of
my-field scouts who calls me
regularly to report his activities out on the Delta waterways.
When the winds are down
the sturgeon fishing has been
very good off Pittsburg, the
Mothball
Fleet
and
Montezuma slough. Other
than that there is not much
to report. Your best bet is to
anchor at your favorite haunt
and fish the bait of your choice
for the subtle bite of the white
sturgeon. Having a little patience can be rewarding.
Bodega Bay
Bodega Bay charter boats
are putting together a sand
dab/crab combination trips
where they have been pulling
limits of the tasty Dungeness
crab for all of their clients. The
giant Humboldt squid have
not made a showing and it is
probably due to cold water.
Half Moon Bay
Sand dab/crab combinations are the only game in
town. Most are awaiting the
opening of the salmon fishing
season in April. Tom Mattush
on the Hull Cat is the only one
running the combo trips.
Pacifica Pier
Crabbing remains very good
from the pier. Perch and king
fish are the top fish being
taken on blood worms and pile
worms.
Monterey Bay
Anglers are scoring on an
average of 50 sand dabs per
day along with near limits of
Dungeness crab. You are advised to check weather conditions before booking a trip.
The -winds have been averaging 20 knots recently which
makes it tough in pulling the
crab pots.
As an option take to the hills
and fish for trout in New
Melones, Lake Don-Pedro,
Amador Lake and Camanche
Lake for some of the trophy
fish that are planted weekiy.
Take time to go out and enjoy the great outdoors. Until
next tide stay safe.

It’s true
Gina and Toni Grimaldi are
identical twins, even more
alike than most. While fishing
on a charter boat out of Bermuda, Toni hooked a blue
marlin and fought it for 38
minutes before bringing it to
gaff. Two hours later, her sister Gina hooked into a blue
marlin and battled it for 38
minutes before landing it. And
naturally, the marlins could
have been twins as well. They
both weighed exactly 187
pounds.

teaming up to provide a funfilled, information-packed
hunter safety classes for youth
and adults on Feb. 22-24;

Eagles killed
Seattle, Wash.—Washington
State Fish and Wildlife personnel found four bald eagles that
had been shot dead in a Granite Falls, Wash. lake. The officers investigating this dastardly deed found the bald
eagles floating on the lakes
surface. They suspect the
birds were shot of f their
perches in the many trees that
surround the lake. They have
offered a reward for information leading to the arrest and
conviction of those responsible.

JV Men’s basketball team
cruise past Summerville

Senior Night brought a great
crowd to Linden’s home hardwood and the “whole atmosphere was upbeat,” said
Lance Cook, JV coach. “Our
sophomores came out ready to
play.”
The Lions had lost to
Summerville on the road the
last time the teams met and
Cook said, “We were determined to take two out of the
three with a win.”
And that’s exactly what the
JV Lions did with their 61-42
victory.
But the Lions led by only a
single point after one quarter
as Ryan Alegre continued his
hot outside shooting with a
pair of long threes.
Cook credited the win to Linden getting its running game
going in the second quarter to
lead 35-24 at half-time.
“We came out in the second
half and played hard and built

the lead to 20 as we cruised
to the win,” said Cook. We always seem to have nice balanced scoring and this game
was no different.”
Aaron Phelps topped
Linden’s scorers with 15
points, followed by Shelby
Lackey and Grant Winters,

nine points and Juan Torres
put eight on the scoreboard.
Winters also added seven
assists and Lackey had five
assists as “the team really
passed the ball well and
played unselfish basketball,”
said Cook.
Varsity Lady Lions
have best week of season
Wins in the Mother Lode
League have been hard to
come by this season for the
varsity Lady Lions but last
week they put together two of
their best efforts of the year
and came away with two wins,
the first an overtime 53-46 win
over Amador in Sutter Creek.
Sometimes teams need some
luck to eke out a win and in
this one the Lions received
exactly what they needed to
take the game to overtime: a
lane violation by Amador with
seconds remaining in regulation that negated a Lady Buf-

In their first game last week
Linden’s varsity men’s basketball team played well enough
to stay in this one and perhaps
to win it but Amador scored
just enough second half points
- 34 - to take the 65-48 win.
The Buffaloes never trailed
but the Lions kept things close
throughout the first half in
which the teams entered the
second quarter with Amador
holding a 14-11 advantage, al
lead which they expanded
slightly in the second stanza
via a 17-14 quarter and which
staked them to a 31-25 halftime lead.
Linden faded a bit in the
third quarter as the visitors
outscored the Lions 16-12 and
although Linden had double
figures in the final quarter 11 points - the Buffaloes hit
for 18 which set the final
score.
Matt Zaklan lit it up for 23
points which included four
treys, two assists, and three
for four from the foul line; his
23 points topped Linden scorers.
Other Lions contributing to
the scoreboard numbers included Jacob Stoddart with
nine points, including three
foul shots, and two assists;
Andrew Billigmeier who had
eight points on very effective
shooting - three of five two
point shots and two of four
three pointers along with four
assists; Sam Remington
dropped in five points which
included one from beyond the
arc and he had four assists;
and Sahib Sidhu had three
points via a three from downtown.

LADY LIONS
size of Summerville took its toll
as the game wore on.
“Being Senior Night it was a
special game for our two senior, Matt Zaklan and Andrew
Billigmeier,” said head coach
Reno Cook.
Summerville put its size advantage to good use on the
first basket of the game an inside shot that gave the Bears
a 2-0 lead but Zaklan drained
a trey from the corner for a
Linden lead that proved to be
short-lived as it was the only
shot Linden hit in the first
quarter and Summerville
rolled out to a 20-3 lead entering the second quarter.
“The team played hard but
just couldn’t get the shots to
fall,” explained Cook.
Things got a little rugged in
the second quarter as Zaklan
was called for a flagrant foul
on a Bear who’d stolen the ball
and was dribbling upcourt for
what would have been an easy
layup or dunk if not for Zaklan
hustling back and fouling.
“Sometimes players get frustrated losing and that competitive fire causes them to react,”
Cook said. “It was a hard foul
but nothing hurtful, no malice or bad intent, just a hard
foul to keep from getting
dunked on.”
The players calmed down, he
said, “things got back to normal and we found ourselves in
a 32 to 10 hole at the half.”

more involved in future Payment Capacity Studies,” said
Jamosmos.

staff Tom Gau, Fritz Buchman
and Brandon Nakagawa to
discuss the county’s plan to
develop a ground water bank
and how the district can help
based on its progress to date
on this issue.
Vogel and Ruhstaller said
the supervisors would like to
see a solid direction and foundation for progress toward
addressing ground water overdraft by ground water banking within the next two years.
The group toured the
Farmington Ground water
Recharge Project and the proposed North Site Ground water Banking Project.
The majority of county staff
appears to be on board with
the districts approach to
ground water banking. However, Gau, director of the Department of Public Works had
“some uncertainty about the
current approach proposed by
Stockton East Water District.”
In view of Gau’s concerns,
and other issues, it was determined that the five elected representatives would like to continue meeting on a monthly
basis.
Feasibility study
for ground water banking
A feasibility study for banking ground water previously
approved by the board was
brought back with some minor modifications including
relocation of the proposed
demonstration testing sites
and monitoring wells. Because
the land will be farmed soon,
it’s become necessary to relocate the testing sites and wells
on Stockton East Water District property.
Cortopassi had concerns
about moving forward with the
feasibility study due to there
not being a commitment to
build the project even if the
study has positive results.
Director Andrew Watkins recommended discussing the topic
at the committee level to evaluate the facts and information and
to “come up with an alternative
recommendation.”

Bake
Ingredients:

egg
bread
(challah, paska, brioche),
chopped into 1-inch pieces
5-6 peaches, skinless and
cut into small slices

cups blueberries

1⁄4 cup pure maple syrup
1⁄3 cup brown sugar

cups milk

ounces butter, unsalted, melted

1⁄2 cup toasted sliced almonds pure maple syrup,

Preparation:
Spray a deep pie dish with
cooking spray and line with
half of the cubed egg bread.
Add 2 cups of peaches and 3⁄4
cup of blueberries, then cover
with remaining bread cubes.
In a medium bowl, beat

The Latin phrase, “about one day” or circadian best describes
the human sleep cycle. Disrupting this cycle can be harmful
down the road. Poor quality sleep can affect your immune system. Many sleep studies have discovered that your rest is directly linked to your well-being and daily health.
People who have chronic sleep problems have a weaker defense system against pathogens that cause illness, such as
the common cold.
To make matters worse, it is known that poor sleep can lead
to overeating. While it is not exactly understood, the body uses
rest to ‘recharge’ the body. Hormones such as leptin, which
control appetite, may be affected by poor quality sleep.
A recent study at the University of Chicago found a correlation between disrupted sleep cycles and increased appetite,
especially cravings for rich foods.
Clock reset tips
What can you do if you are one of millions who work late at
night or sometimes disrupt your circadian rhythm?
Good news! We can trick our clocks if need be to maintain a
24-hour cycle while still getting the rest we need, even if the
sun is shining.
Track lifestyle patterns:
Decrease caffeine and alcohol intake before bedtime.
Work on reducing stress. We all have stress, but it is the
single major factor to poor sleep and long-term health problems.
Find structured ways to relax. Yoga is a good example.
Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and drink plenty of water.
Exercise regularly.
When are you exercising? If you’re exercising too close to
bedtime, you might be confusing your internal clock with this
nightly activity.
What is the room like where you sleep? If you need to sleep
in the daytime, it is very important to shut out light to trigger
light/dark cycles. Adjust your room’s environment if your room
is too hot or loud. Studies have shown that very dark (pitch
black), cool rooms are the most “sleepable.” If you live near
traffic, invest in ear plugs. Upgrade your mattress for a more
comfortable, good night’s sleep.
Keep your energy up
(NAPSA)-The next time you feel your energy flagging, consider
this advice from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other experts:
Getting a balance of protein and nutrients in your diet is the
key to keeping your energy up all day. That means making
sure you eat a variety of whole grains, fruit, veggies and protein at each meal.
• For starters, have a good breakfast. After many hours of
fasting, a nutritious breakfast helps provide energy for an active day. A breakfast filled with a balance of nutrients-protein,
grains, fruit and dairy-will give your brain as well as your body
what it needs to get you through the morning at your best.
• Next, get moving. Getting a little physical activity each day,
activities like taking a 30-minute walk around the neighborhood or mowing the lawn, can help you build strong bones
and muscles, reduce body fat and feel great. Being active uses
energy, and you’ll feel invigorated.
• Finally, snack smart. Rather than empty calories, enjoy
something like this:

Toss ingredients together in large bowl. Portion 1/4-cup servings into plastic snack bags.

An important part of that snack is the protein you get from
the peanuts. Sherry Coleman Collins, MS, RD, LD, says, “Peanuts are a powerhouse of protein. With seven grams per serving, peanuts contain more protein than any nut. Protein is one
of the essential nutrients in life. It is important not only for
growing children but also for maintaining muscles, bones and
skin throughout life.”
Moreover, peanuts are a natural source of plant-based protein. Collins recommends choosing more plant-based proteins
as part of a healthy lifestyle. The government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans specifically point out the need for a shift in
food intake to a more plant-based diet; one that emphasizes
fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts. Whether you’re a
vegetarian or looking to cut down on saturated fat levels, peanuts can be a smart choice when looking for a boost of protein
in any meal.
