From The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) 2/1/11 We are pleased to provide you with the following list of scholarships for Eating Disorders Treatment. You will find the list at the bottom of the email after the closing. If you have any questions feel free to call or email us. Warning Please understand that the list we have collected below consist entirely of independent organizations with no affiliation with NEDA. We’ve simply researched online and provided the list that we found to you. We do not screen the organizations or provide any evaluation or endorsement. If you choose to apply for the services provided by the organization please choose carefully. Please check out this page for more information regarding financial issues and eating disorders. http://www.bulimia.com/client/client_pages/newsletter10.cfm For some families, buying insurance is the first step to getting affordable care. If you are considering buying insurance, the following government website can help you explore your options: www.healthcare.gov . You may need to pay special attention to coverage as all plans do not cover eating disorders. For others an insurance policy has refused to pay for treatment. In such cases, the family may choose to appeal the denial. Learn more about insurance issues in our parent toolkit. Also note that affordable care is sometimes available by applying to research studies searching for participants. Within the "Get Help Today" area of our website you will also be able to look up support groups and research study information. For more research studies see the following government website: http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?cond=Eating+Disorders Overcoming an eating disorder and taking the necessary steps toward recovery takes a great deal of tenacity and strength. I commend you on the success you have had thus far and encourage you to continue seeking treatment and professional support. If you or your loved one are feeling suicidal, you should get help IMMEDIATELY. Call 911, go to the emergency room, or contact a crisis line (1-800-273-TALK, or 1-800-273-8255). Emergency Rooms are required by law to provide for anyone in need emergency care regardless of their financial means. A person does not have to be underweight to have an eating disorder or to require emergency medical care for one. If you or your loved one are experiencing any of the following seek medical help immediately: • accidentally or deliberately caused themselves a physical injury • become suicidal • confused thinking and is not making any sense • delusions (false beliefs) or hallucinations (experiencing things that aren’t there) • disoriented; doesn’t know what day it is, where they are or who they are • vomiting several times a day or has uncontrollable vomiting or diarrhea • experiencing dizziness or fainting spells • too weak to walk or collapses • painful muscle spasms • complaining of chest pain or having trouble breathing • blood in their bowel movements, urine or vomit • a body mass index (BMI) of less than 16 • an irregular heart beat or very low heart beat (less than 50 beats per minute) • cold or clammy skin indicating a low body temperature or has a body temperature of less than 35 degrees Celsius/95 degrees Fahrenheit Or any other serious medical concerns If you or someone you love is admitted to a hospital inform the staff immediately everything you know concerning the eating disorder or they will not be able to accurately treat the symptoms. This effort is due to help fray the high cost of specialized care and to avoid the often difficult decisions to be made for families of ED patients (ongoing treatment for seriously ill patient versus exorbitant cost of care). Our desire is that all recipients, and eventually, all individuals who have been personally affected by an eating disorder, will receive the appropriate care to help them eliminate their eating disorder altogether.
