How To Take Care Of Spot Tuckpointing
Do
Do-It-Yourself
Clean out joints. Can be grinded, scraped or
brushed out. The deeper you go, the longer
the patching will last. The joints should be at
least ½ inch to 1 inch deep.
Brush the joints with a MASONRY BRUSH to clear
out the sand. Then spray water on the area you are
working on.
Mix mortar: Buy "Type N" pre-mixed
pre
mortar. Mix
with water in bucket using a MARGIN TROWEL. It
should not be too wet or too dry, it should look
and feel like fluffy mashed potatoes.
Scoop mortar onto your HAWK and flatten into a
pancake. Use your JOINER to take mortar from the
hark and place in your wall.
Let your work dry a little. When it crumbles off, use
your MASONRY BRUSH to finish your work. This is
important to create a good bond with the bricks.
•If
If you are working on a hot day, you may need to wet down
your work later in the day. If it dries too fast, it won't harden
properly.

Tool List:
These tools should be easy to find at any hardware store if you ask for help. If you clean them well after you
use them, they should last a very long time! Tools can be cleaned with water, or also with a wire brush.

Brush
Margin
Trowel
Bucket
Bag of 'Type
N' Mortar
Jointer

TOTAL: Under $40!
Depending on how many bags of mortar you need, you should be spending less than $40! Not bad for a repair
that could save you a lot more!!
These prices are averages, and depending on where you go, you might find these tools more or less expensive. Also,
you might find scraping out the joints to be difficult without proper tools. Masonry rakes can be very help
helpful, but are
expensive at about $40 a piece. A grinder with a diamond blade is also expensive, but you might be able to ask about
renting these items.
