Editor’s Note
Hi Everyone,
Big apologies that this newsletter is a bit late, but I think you will all agree it was worth
the wait !
Even flipping quickly through the pages, I think you will notice we have more great
stories, pictures and news of our colourful horses, than ever before !
Please support our Championship Show the 24th to 27th October 2013 in the stunning
Afridome in Parys, and make every effort to come to our AGM and Awards Evening
on the 16th November in Bloemfontein. These are the two highlights of our year.
There will be a comprehensive explanation and discussion at the meeting on the PSSM
problem in our country. We are all relieved to hear that it is caused by a straight dominant gene, which means that we CAN breed it out of our herd. I personally feel that
those breeders who find themselves in possession of a PSSM positive horse, must be
given a chance to breed a PSSM negative horse to replace these animals.
On correct diet and care these horses can be useful trail and work horses, for the rest of
their lives.
We can't wait for spring, new green grass and lots of cute spotty foals filling the paddock !
Greetings,
Claire

President’s report
Dear AHBSSA members /AHBSSA lede
As the cold of winter grips us and the feeding and maintaining of our horses makes them look at their worst at
least the problematic pests are kept at bay for a few
months.
Soon it will be time to start preparing them for our
Championship show in October and we encourage
members to attend with as many horses as possible to
make this a successful showcase of our beloved breed. It is also a good opportunity to see what stallions are producing good quality stock and to share the
company of our fellow breeders.
It is encouraging to see that although it is a difficult market to sell horses there
is more of a demand for the Appaloosa breed because of their easy temperament and hardiness. Horses are expensive to keep and more and more people
are looking at the Appaloosa because they are much easier to maintain than
most other breeds.
The PSSM debate continues and there are two very different opinions on the
matter. Council decided to continue registering progeny from positive horses
until an informed discussion can be held at our AGM in November to clarify
the best way forward for the society regarding this matter.
I am always amazed by the calm nature of our Appaloosa horses especially
when it comes to children, it is almost like there is a connection between the
human spirit and theirs.
Sometimes I think we could learn from them and deal with problems in a
calmer manor.
Regards.

News of and from Members.
Council is aware that members were unhappy with the service they were receiving from
AHBSSA via the Sectretariat, earlier this year. We can only apologise for any inconvenience to members for delays in responding to them, and assure them that their comments have been taken seriously.
We are now most fortunate to have the services of Sumari Taljaard, who has been dealing with Alet and our Registrations previously. Welcome Sumari.
We are delighted to welcome more new members,
As breeders we welcome:
Suzette van Baalen
Dr G du Preez
As non breeders we welcome:
Su-Marie Croucamp (daughter of Suzette) Junior.
Lindy Kaese, who unfortunately slipped though the net earlier this year, apologies.
Rolene v.d. Merwe, also from earlier 2013
Changes in Status:
Corli du Plessis is now an Ordinary member, no longer breeding.
Deborah Buchan is now a Breeder under the new name Dream Weaver Stud
Mandy Clark has changed the name of her Stud to Conti S. Stud.
As I repeatedly write, members will be aware that we are trying to notify them of
events via emails and where no emails are on our records, via an SMS to a cell phone.
If your email details or cell phone details have changed please send Maggie your updated details, (cell 072 177 1087 or to [email protected].)
Coming up very soon is the AGM, (November 16 th), as usual held at the Stud Book
offices in Bloemfontein, which is followed by the Awards Dinner which this year will
be held at Anta Boga, boutique hotel, Bloemfontein. This is the same venue as last
year, which is very close to Stud book Offices. Please book your place at the Awards
Dinner with Sumarie, our secretary at the Secretariat, Stud Book. Overnight accommodation is R900 per room. Please book this with the hotel, saying you are with the
Appaloosa Award Dinner group.
Motions for the AGM must be with the secretary, SUMARIE, by October 12th. This
is to enable the members to have the documents 21 days before the meeting. Nominations for Council should also be in by 12th October.
Although both Motions and Nominations may be posted via registered post you may
also email these to Sumarie, but please check with her that she has received them.
NB. Please check the Constitution before suggestion a motion, as you may find that the
point you wish to include or change in the Constitution has already been passed at an
earlier AGM.

Equine Dentist
When did you last see the
Dentist?
Not your human dentist, but
the Equine Dentist, an essential service provider in your
reference book of care providers for your Appaloosa.
Maybe you use the vet to
check your horse's teeth but in
my, albeit limited, experience
vets really aren't keen to do it. Maybe you do it yourself. This may be OK for the old
school owner with experience gleaned over many years. Most of our members are too
young to put themselves in this category.
For most of us the best way to deal with the wear and tear on teeth is to call in the
trained professional. If you are not sure if the person you are considering is qualified,
ask them. At present in South Africa there is no "governing body" for these professionals, but a growing band of Equine Dentists is working towards this. (Many will
have trained outside South Africa.)
Routine yearly inspections (more frequent if the horse is in regular competition), are recommended. As the
horse's teeth grow for much of its life,
and concentrates are not a natural feed
for it, sharp edges to the teeth, and
other problems can result. This will
cause your Appaloosa a great deal of
discomfort and may affect the performance you can achieve with him/her.
A clear sign that all is not well is quidding. The worst outcome of which can
be colic. Older horses wear their teeth
down and lose teeth whilst young ones may not lose the milk teeth naturally. Each of
these situations calls for expert attention.
Some Equine Dentists use power tools to float/file the teeth, others don't and think that
this is not necessary for most treatments. The preference of your horse also should be
taken into consideration. Older horses in particular respond adversely to power treatment.
Let's not neglect the dental care of our horses, or ourselves.
Use a recommended, trained professional.
For more information refer to HQ (early 2013) and your Equine Dentist.
Maggie Riley.

Fauresmith - Flying Colours
Claire Amm finished her 30 th Fauresmith 200 km Endurance Ride.
Here she is crossing the line with her grand daughter Emily van der Linde, holding the
American flag between them, seeing as it was also the 4 th July....USA Independence
Day.
They were also riding home
bred American horses....Claire's horse Alpha
Wap's Khwezi having an
imported Appaloosa sire
Wap's Pajamas and Emily's
horse, Apache Joe, affectionately known as Charlie,
although a pinto, is out of an
Appaloosa mare that descends from yet another
USA import Southern Beau.
They set off with
Claire's daughter Lisa,
Junior Winner of Fauresmith back in 1982,
who last rode in this
competition in 1986.
After two days and
148km, a stone cut
through her horse,
Windchimes ' pad, and
she failed the final
check of the day.
The stone was incidentally one of the famous Middle Stone
Age artifacts that are found in the area....lying in wait for 30000 years to cause mischief !
It would have been great to see the three generations finish together !
All three were interviewed and appeared on SABC 2 news the following Thursday.
Well done to all of you !

Sellers Beware
Laura McIilrath from Kilides Appaloosas has been charged by the Garden Route SPCA
and has had all her horses removed by the SPCA. herewith are pictures of some of the
horses that were under her care at the time.
She has now moved and is in the Gauteng area. She has been trying to buy horses from
all over the country and she owes many people money for horses bought and not paid
for in full. She used a third party to buy from me, her boyfriend "Charles".
They bought Hunters Eagles Gold and Hunters Eagles Smartiepants. These horses
along with two black mares are at the following plot and if anyone is in that area that
could check on them it would be greatly appreciated. From Magaliesberg take the
R509 to Derby/Koster, +- 10km there is a turnoff to Carltonville to the left, take this
turnoff over the railway line, immediately turn right on a dust road into some tall gum
trees, keep to the left at the fork, +- 300m you will see the house go left and then turn
right behind the house and you will see two small paddocks which is where the horses
are being kept. If they are not there please let me know as she may move them to avoid
detection.
She already has 4 horses here and this number may grow. She was running a website
claiming to be a sanctuary and getting funding from America and the UK. Since her
fallout with the SPCA she has closed these websites but may well have started a new
one. From what I understand she buys healthy horses in good condition, takes photos
from when they arrive in perfect health, she then starves them and takes pictures as
there condition deteriorates. She then posts pictures of the horses she has "rescued" and
gets donations to feed them. She uses the pictures she took in reverse and indicates that
she is feeding them back to health.
She seems to have a liking for Appaloosas, perhaps because they are most easily recognized as an American Bread. Please be very careful when selling horses as she uses
whatever methods she can to get what she wants and it is easy to be fooled by her lies.
Here are the particulars that I have regarding this matter.
SPCA Garden Route 044 878 1990, [email protected] The following cell numbers
have been used by her.
Laura 076 600111. Her boyfriend "Charles" 083 7540443.
I was given a email address [email protected] Address as P. O. Box 627.
Magaliesberg, 1791.
Any one who has any further information that will help with this case is welcome to
contact me on 083 6252993.

Pretoria Pony Club
Pretoria Pony Club Appaloosa Extravaganza
Pretoria Pony Club, a branch of the South African Pony Club, who are steeped in history
in encouraging children to interact with ponies in a safe and confident environment, with
much of the basis for riding originating with Pony Club. Pretoria Pony Club, after several years dormant are now back into full swing with a full complement committee, and
lots of very keen members. Most of the Pony Club rallies encompass a fun learning
environment, which is safe and encourages sportsmanship. Leadership and of course
horsemanship. With this in mind, the Pony Club have decided to join up with the Appa-
loosa Society, their members & breeders, hosting a rally encompassing a local breed
which is also steeped in history in South Africa. The Appaloosa with its appealing colours and styles, coupled with its superb temperament, make the most ideal children’s
riding horse/pony. PPC will be hosting a clinic on Saturday 14 th September 2013, focussing on the Appaloosa breed in specific, but also encompassing showing, turn out, han-
dling, and what the judge generally looks for in the show ring, in both the breed classes
and the ridden classes. The clinic will start at 9 a.m. A lovely handbook will be supplied
to all participants, with feed-back from the Appaloosa Society, as well as the basic details, encouraging Appaloosa’s into the show ring, as well an interesting perspective
from several noteworthy breeders, and how they grew to love this highly versatile breed.
Shortly after a brief lunch, PPC will host showing classes, the classes will encourage
more Appaloosa’s into the show ring, but also youth handlers, so join in! We will have
rosettes, sashes and prizes on offer, and hope that the fun classes will provide a pleasant
learning platform for all, and we hope that you too can pick up a tip or two.
The clinic will be open to everyone, discounted for members of the Appaloosa Society
as well as members of the Pretoria Pony Club. The host venue will be Roselane Stables
in Garsfontein Road, and there will be catering available as well as stables and paddocks, for which there will be no charge. For a full schedule & details, please email me
on [email protected] or alternatively see our FB page – Pretoria Pony Club.
Please feel free to phone me on 084 534 4433 for more information and with any questions.

How does a Horse See! The Equine Eye
Humans and horses literally see things differently,
and this difference can
sometimes lead to problems on the trail. No doubt
you've ridden on windy
days when suddenly your
horse became agitated and
excited. A piece of paper
flew across the road or trail
and your horse jumped or
stopped dead in its tracks.
This might well be the same horse you rode on this trail yesterday
without a hint of shyness.
This sudden change of behaviour was because your horse sees differently than you do. You didn't give a second thought to that piece
of paper flying across the trail. Your horse, though, saw a strange,
out-of-focus object moving across its path.
The fear of unidentified moving objects comes from being a prey
animal. For centuries equines served as tasty meals for big cats
and other predators.
Thankfully, Mother Nature did not leave the horse defenceless
against predators. She blessed the horse with an unusually broad
field of vision, keen hearing, the ability to lash out with front and
back hooves and, most importantly, the ability to outdistance all
but the fastest of pursuers.
The Equine Eye
The equine eye is unique in that it has both monocular and binocular vision. With monocular vision, the horse can see objects with
one eye. As a result the brain often is receiving two images at the
same time, sort of like a human attempting to watch side-by-side
television sets simultaneously and absorb the action on both. With
binocular vision, however, the horse can see the same object with
both eyes at the same time and only one message is conveyed to
the brain. A horse's eyes are wide apart and on each side of its
head to accommodate monocular vision better, very important to a
prey animal. Humans have only binocular vision. We fall into the
predator rather than the prey category. As such, our eyes are in
the front of the head, and only a short distance apart, just like
other predators --lions, tigers, dogs, and cats. A predator's eyes
are designed to focus on the prey it's attempting to chase down.
12
How does a Horse See! The Equine Eye (continued)
Auto-Focusing Mechanism
The human eye is a lot like an auto-focus camera, making use of
disc-like lenses that are attached to powerful ciliary muscles. These
muscles quickly flex or relax to adjust the lens shape as needed. If
you want to look at something far away, you simply stare at the
object and, in a flash, the lens focuses on it and you see it with
clarity. If the object is close, the same thing happens, only the focal
point is much nearer.
If you want to look at something to either the right or left, you
simply turn your head and the ciliary muscles do the rest, sending
a sharp image to the retina, a mass of nerve receptors on your
eyeball's back wall. The retina then transmits the image to the
brain--all in the proverbial blink of an eye.
The horse's ciliary muscles are underdeveloped and do a
poor job of bringing objects into focus. There is also a big difference in the retina. In humans the retina is a smooth, concave
surface. The equine retina is more concave in some places than in
others, and some sections are nearer the cornea than others.
Focusing Problems
Because the horse can not focus on objects as we do, it compensates by lifting and lowering or weaving its head from side to side.
It may also try to get either farther away from or closer to an object to bring it into focus.
Even when the horse has focused as best it can, its sight is only
three-fifths that of a human. In other words, when looking at an
object twenty feet away, the horse sees only as much detail as a
person with twenty-twenty vision would if the object were thirtyfive feet away. This means, of course, that when you're riding down
the trail and see a strange object ahead, you'll recognize what
you're seeing long before your horse does.
Monocular Vision
Because a horses eyes are large (the largest of any land mammal)
and on each side of its skull, the horse has a very broad field of vision. A horse actually has a vision field of more than 350 degrees,
compared to the less than 180 degrees in the human.
Only about 65 degrees of the horse's field of vision are binocular-seen with both eyes--while the remaining 285 degrees are monocular--seen with one eye.
So, the next time your horse is acting differently than expected,
take a moment to see with their sight and perspective it will offer
much added information to the situation.

We recently received fantastic news about two of our Africa's ponies. Africa's Rhythmic
Jive and Africa's Kit Kat have both made the provincial Gauteng jumping team. We currently have another two up coming prospect for sale that we are very excited about Africa's Rhythmic Tango and Africa's Waps Dream. We took Tango to her very first show
last weekend and she placed 1st and 2nd in the Ungraded Showing and 3rd in the Prelim
Dressage as well as jumping 2 beautiful rounds without a blink of an eye lid.
Waps Dream is currently in JHB competing and will soon feature with the other top CA
ponies. Tango: (Chestnut) .
Africa's Wap our stallion we owe
gratitude to for our success is sold
and competing successfully in
JHB.
Our latest addition to our
Stud is Africa's Bundu
Bash a 6 month old colt

Xube Shonge Appaloosa Stud recently represented the Appaloosa breed at the annual Neighbour’s show in Kyalami. We held the Appaloosa
name high competing against other breeds, and in
the informal breed
parade our spotties
raised a lot of interest
and impressed with
their calm, well behaved disposition.
Les Chevaux
Dominique, Alpha
Toby’s Colourburst,
Painted Crystal Clear
and Otter’s Creek Chocolat all had clear rounds in the jumping ,with Chocolat progressing to the final round, and
Dominique ending 3rd / 40 entries in her dressage class.
