I
It’s July and in Fayette County, our woods are full of… n lieu of our normal summer jaunt to the beaches of the Outer Banks, I decided that we would take some smaller trips this summer and explore areas a little closer to home. I am a Pennsylvanian from the start – born and raised here – and I have had opportunity to explore almost every part of the Commonwealth with the exception of North Central PA, so that is where I decided that we would make our escape. Now, my family has always owned property in our own Laurel Mountains and I spent a great deal of time there growing up (still do, in fact), but I decided that I wanted to see the “PA Wilds” (which includes Potter, Cameron, and Elk counties), so off we went to a small rented cabin in Coudersport, PA, right smack in the heart of Potter County – “God’s Country” so it’s called. I don’t know what I was expecting (well, I do know, but that’s a different story) and what I found was not bad, but it was no Fayette County, PA! There is a lot of forest up there, just like here, except there is very little more than forests and streams. That area is a great get‐away if your only goal is to do nothing, but I wanted more – I wanted to see amazing landscapes, glimpse some wildlife, have the ability to enjoy learning about the communities, shop a bit, and experience the lifestyle. What we found instead was forest, streams, and more forest and streams. A fisherman’s paradise, a hunter’s dream, absolutely ‐ but a family vacation spot for us – well maybe not‐so‐much. Look, I am not trying to sway anyone from visiting the PA Wilds. The PA Grand Canyon was amazing, the town of Wellsboro was nice ‐ the diner had excellent fried chicken. But overall what we have to offer as far as tourism in Fayette County is far better. It’s July, and our woods are full of TOURISTS, so my question is two‐part. First, are you acting as an ambassador for our beautiful county? And second, are you taking advantage of everything that our county has to offer? Stop in our office and we’ll share with you some great information about all of the fabulous ways to spend the summer days right here in Fayette. Go boating on the river, enjoy the beauty of our waterfalls, revel in the creative architecture of our Frank Lloyd Wright Homes, shop in the multitude of innovative small businesses, take some time to enjoy all that Fayette has to offer. And while you’re at it, welcome those visitors who have specifically chosen to travel to Fayette County – there are hundreds of thousands of them! Share with them you’re favorite places to eat or the best place to stand to get the best picture of the falls at Ohiopyle. Spend some time enjoying your home and then share your discoveries with our tourism community. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you find; in turn you will help our county grow, and most importantly, support our small business community. I traveled for hours into the middle of nowhere just to find out that everything I wanted from a get‐away to the forest was less than a half hour’s drive into my own backyard. So try it! Muriel

O
n the show “Going LIVE with FCTV” (brought to you by the Buy Local Network), we are always proud to celebrate what we call “the best of Fayette County.” We include in that: music, food, entertainment, authors, and even unique and innovative businesses. Until we started doing the show just over a year ago, I would have never realized the amazing amount of local talent right within our region. Sure, we all know Andy Warhol had connections to Smock, PA, and that the Big Mac was invented at the old McDonald’s, at the Uniontown Shopping Center; but years from now who will we look back on as a famous native son or daughter? The romantic in me has to wonder if while on a recent trip to Giant Eagle that my shopping cart hadn’t bumped into a yet‐to
‐be‐discovered Pablo Picasso, Yo‐Yo Ma, or Giada De Laurentiis. Moreover, I like to think that some of the guests who have graced the stage and sat on the couch at “Going LIVE” will someday (maybe very soon) ascend to that level of stardom. I would not be surprised if Miss Katelyn Rose Ritenour (acoustic performer), Jason Jack Miller (author), or any of our previous guests strike it big. The talent to succeed in the arts exists in Fayette County; it oozes from dance schools, off theatre stages, out of kitchen windows, and in choir lofts. Opportunity is what can make ‐ or break ‐ any rising star. Fayette TV is proud to give those honing their crafts a chance to practice on a regional stage, and without being too presumptuous, we hope that our efforts help them to improve their skills. We celebrate the arts and foster growth among aspiring artists, regardless of age. We cannot, however, continue to celebrate these ventures without your support. How can you help? Obviously, business leaders and even individuals can sponsor programming, helping to defray the costs. But equally as important is watching and engaging with our programming. To give you some numbers, approximately 3,000 people attended the one‐day event, beginning that day at 3:00 p.m. [Attendance at the fireworks was probably at an all‐time high at 30,000 plus, as watchers covered the Uniontown Mall parking lot as well as every parking lot nearby, even parking along Route 119 to watch the show.] For the most part, the event “ran just like clockwork”. A group of dedicated Chamber volunteers started the set up process around 11:00 a.m. at the Chamber office, with many joining us at noon on the mall grounds. This was after initial setup—and loads of gravel—happened on Saturday. There are so many thank‐you’s to pass along that we don’t know where to start, but we know some include: Pam, Ron, and the staff of the Uniontown Mall ‐ as always you are outstanding… thanks a million! list of these people can be found on page 9]! It was hot, and the weather uncertain, but our volunteers never complained! Special thanks to Fayette Rental Solutions for help that morning, and to Chris Kennedy for lending us the use of his trailer, as well as James Vending and Jackson Farms, for the use of their trucks, too! Thanks also to the staff of Blaney Farms for completely manning the refreshment tent all day long! Thanks to Kingfish Worldwide for the great job handling our musical entertainment that day! Thanks to all of our vendors, for being there that day, all day! Thanks to Keystone Fireworks for a fabulous, exciting fireworks show and Chevron for being our Presenting Sponsor! We could go on and on, but space will not allow. We get an incredible feeling when we think about this event, and the way that the members of this organization work together to assure its success. We’ve talked to many other Chamber executives, and it never fails to amaze them how devoted our members are, as well as the incredible level of camaraderie among our general membership. Fayette County Fair – Advanced tickets are currently on sale at the Fayette Chamber office and at Sweet Pea’s locations for this year’s annual county fair, which will run from July 24th through August 3rd. The cost is only $10.00 per ticket ($13.00 at the gate), and includes entrance, entertainment, and rides. Pick up a brochure with a complete list of events TODAY! Uniontown Area YMCA – the Y is selling a Steelers Game Package/WVU Game Pack and cash ticket for $20.00, which will go off on Saturday, August 31st on the 7:00 p.m. Daily lottery. The ticket will benefit the Y’s annual support campaign. For ticket information, call 724‐438‐2584. Geibel Catholic Junior‐Senior High School ‐ will have two school custodial/buildings and grounds positions open July 1, 2013. One position is part‐time at 29 ½ hours weekly. Uniontown Arts Fellowship – is holding a Dance for Dreams Festival, featuring the Art ‘n Sole 5K, on Saturday, July 20th, in downtown Uniontown. The State Theatre Center for the Arts ‐ is sponsoring a Car Cruise & Screening along Main Street and Beeson Avenue on Friday, August 9th, from 4:00 ‐ 7:00 p.m. The event will run between Showings of the classic film "American Graffiti" at 2:00 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m., on the Big Screen in the Theatre. Dash plaques will be given to the first 75 cars. Registration donation of $5.00 per vehicle, beginning at 1:00 p.m. (prior to first film showing), on the corner of Main Street and in the 911 parking lot. All registered vehicle owners get one free movie pass! Movie admission is $5.00 per adult, and $3.00 for seniors age 60 and up. In addition, there will be hot dogs and root beer floats available for purchase, plus music, raffle prizes, and more! Any proceeds from the event benefit the State Theatre Center for the Arts. St. Vincent de Paul – is currently seeking someone to market their newest program. This is a paid 40 hour per week position through the VISTA. Build St Vincent De Paul’s capacity to assist people by creating temporary employment opportunities in order to avoid a crisis that will drive people into further poverty and teaches employees under SVDP supervision on‐the‐job skills that are transferable to full time employment in the private sector. Welcome! Westmoreland County Community College ‐ held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday, June 28th to mark the beginning of the construction of its Latrobe Center. More than 135 elected officials, Latrobe government, business and industry leaders, and community members attended the event held at the construction site on Depot and Jefferson streets. The two‐story, 30,000‐square‐foot facility, designed by L.R. Kimball, will house general and computer classrooms, computer and science labs, offices, student study areas and multipurpose rooms for community activities. The new center will allow the college to offer more classes and students will be able to complete certificates and degree programs without traveling to the Youngwood campus. The Mission of the LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma while raising public awareness and improving the quality of life for patients and their families. WALK UNITED AGAINST CANCER! That is the theme of this year’s Light the Night event: At Uniontown High School Stadium on Saturday, September 21, 2013 Pre‐walk festivities begin at 5:30 PM with the Walk taking place beginning at Dusk. There will be fun, food, beverages, entertainment, friends, information tables and many appreciative families who have been touched by cancer. We encourage all registrants to become a Champion for Cures to receive a full meal at the event, an event t‐shirt and a balloon to show your support, all for raising at least $100 (just twenty dollars from five of your friends). A minimum of $25 (five dollars from five of your friends) enables one to receive an illuminated balloon for the walk. Red balloons carried by those supporting the search for a cure White balloons carried by those who are cancer survivors Gold Balloons carried by those walking in memory of someone they have lost to cancer Statistically, someone new is diagnosed with blood cancer every five minutes and every ten minutes someone loses their battle with blood cancer.
