LOWER EASTSIDE SERVICE CENTER ANNUAL REPORT leadership update At LESC we remain committed to our basic mission of providing treatment and care for New Yorkers living with chemical dependency and mental illness, and offering them the chance to realize their dream of living healthy, abundant and productive lives. So we are pleased to say that we served 1,400 New Yorkers daily with our proven continuum of evidence-based practices, this year growing by two new programs. LESC is doing an amazing job of treating the underserved by emphasizing prevention, treatment and recovery. With unmatched empathy and expertise our talented professionals in each and every program, along with our dedicated Board of Trustees, have truly delivered this year. Now as we approach our next 50-years, our commitment continues to the highest-quality sevices helping to create a more vigorous, healthy and prosperous New York City. 1ATRICIA)OFFMAN Board Chairperson )ERB#ARISH President & CEO 2009 enhancing lives & strengthening neighborhoods With 50 years of experience and the highest C.A.R.F. accreditation, the hard-working LESC staff turned lives around and bolstered communities with amazing accomplishments in 2009: f 0PENEDAPARTMENTRESIDENCEFORFAMILIESLIVING with histories of chronic homelessness and substance use disorder - Diversity Works f &XPANDEDOURYEARROUNDCHILDRENcSPROGRAM designed to demonstrate alternative lifestyles to drugs to 60 children and their families - Bridge2Life Camp & Charles Evans Kids Club f )ELPEDHOMELESSANDRECENTLYRECOVEREDADULTS secure and maintain homes in neighborhoods where they live independently and productively - Scatter-Site )OUSING f 1ROVIDEDMEDICALCAREHOUSINGTREATMENTAND parenting skills training for addicted pregnant women and their babies preparing for motherhood - Pregnant Women & Infants Program f (RADUATEDCLEANANDSOBERCLIENTSFROMOUR residential abstinence program with jobs, housing and renewed family ties - Su Casa f )ELPEDSTRENGTHENCOMMUNITIEScABILITYTOKEEP children and families safe - LESC/NYC-ACS Community Partnership Program f (RADUATEDSTABILIZEDMEDICATIONASSISTEDCLIENTSREADY to productively re-enter the community with jobs, and housing - Su Casa f 0FFEREDMEDICATIONASSISTEDTREATMENTFORNEARLY opioid addicted New Yorkers along with job training, housing assistance and mental health services - Opioid Recovery Services LESC Community Based Services scatter site housing Nearly 1-in-20 New Yorkers has experienced homelessness. Each year 100,000 New Yorkers are homeless, and each night more than 38,000 sleep in city shelters*. It is unrealistic to expect newly recovered New Yorkers to maintain sobriety if they must live on the streets. We believe that housing is a pivotal service that enhances lasing recovery. In 2009 we launched LESC Scatter-Site Housing to help recently recovered homeless singles secure housing in their neighborhoods where they can live independently as productive members of the community. * Coalition for the Homeless - 2003 wellness in motion We launched Wellness-In-Motion this year to help improve communities by offering an accessible mobile clinic cruising the streets to serve at-risk addicts, who chronically relapse, are hard to reach, and often homeless. We put our services where we can engage substance abusers, enroll them in treatment programs, and give them hope with: Rapid HIV and sexually transmitted diseases testing, substance abuse and mental health screening, physical and sexual abuse screening. 50th anniversary gala celebration For five decades LESC has offered leading-edge programs and services for the benefit of New Yorkers who need them most: Su Casa Residential Services 7 Gouverneur Slip East, New York, NY 10002 Phone: 212-566-7590 or 917-217-3771 Methadone-to-Abstinence-Residence Short Stay Methadone Residence Pregnant Women and Infants Program Primary Healthcare Services Vocational Services Outpatient Services 46 East Broadway, New York, NY 10002 Phone: 212-566-3584 or 917-217-3771 From left: Supermodel & LESC Gala Ambassador Heidi Albertsen; LESC Board Member & Gala Honoree Stanley Zareff; and Broadway & daytime television actress Kathy Brier at the 50th Anniversary Gala celebration (photo by Rob Rich) The LESC 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner & Silent Auction, held May 11, 2009 at the Light House at Chelsea Piers, celebrated a half-century of serving and enhancing the New York City community. 450 guests at the big event proudly honored LESC founder Edward Brown; our distinguished friend and Board member, Stanley Zareff, Vice President, Corporate Communications at Credit Suisse; and our loyal supporter and advocate, Bruce Tindal, Executive Vice President at Bollinger, Inc. Charity Navigator notes that, “a charity that spends below 75% (of revenues) on programs under performs.” The American Institute of Philanthropy states that “60% or greater is reasonable for most charities.” LESC grew revenues by 6.4% over the past three years, and we are proud that we spent 82.6% on program services in 2009: ANNUAL REVENUE (in millions) $16 % OF REVENUE SPENT ON PROGRAM SERVICES 90.00% 85.44% 87.23% 82.64% $15 80.00% $14 $13 70.00% $12 $11 60.00% $10 $9 2007 2008 2009 50.00% 2007 2008 2009 special thanks to our generous benefactors A.M.
