President’s Message
“Growth is never by mere chance; it is the
result of forces working TOGETHER”

and Advisor
~ James Cash Penney
Our September 17th Strategy Planning Meeting of
of Minneapolis found chapter representatives working and
planning together. Attendees participated in one of three committee
groups (Communications, Programs, or Membership). Ideas were
shared and captured. A representative from each of the committees
provided a quick recap of items discussed. It was clear that we all are
focused on growing our chapter together. Growing doesn’t just mean
growing our chapter membership. It includes each member growing
and learning through attending chapter programs, reading chapter
and corporate communications, networking with other chapter
representatives, mentoring new members and working alongside each
other toward a common vision and goals.
EWI®
I’m challenging EWI of Minneapolis to focus on the word together
for 2014-2015. Why this one word? A request was made to each of
the incoming Chapter Presidents by our 2014-2015 EWI Corporate
President, Darlene Banogan. She asked us to read a book by Dan
Britton entitled ‘One Word That Will Change Your Life’ and to come
up with one word that our chapter would focus on for the next year.
The concept of the book is simple. It asks a reader to embrace
ownership of one word for 365 days and by doing so the word becomes
the vision for the upcoming year. I thought about this concept and
finding one word that EWI of Minneapolis could focus on for 20142015. The word together kept coming into focus. The dictionary
states together as being ‘with or in proximity to another person or
people; at the same time’.

LCAM HIGHLIGHTS
Thom Singer | Connecting with People in a Social Media Crazy
World
By Lisa Hamilton, Carlson
Thom Singer was the keynote speaker on Thursday, September 11th at the 2014
Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting (LCAM) in Washington, D.C. He has
written books on the power of business relationships, networking, presentation
skills and entrepreneurship. Thom shared an inspirational message challenging each of us to move
beyond the superficial connections in our social media crazy world and speaking about the
importance of networking (human engagement).
Networking is about long-term mutually beneficial relationships and people succeed more because of
networking than by not networking. Networking allows us to put the pieces together and when
pieces are put together big success can come your way! During the keynote message and throughout
the conference Thom challenged us to be engaged in networking with others and to be fully present
in our conversations. He challenged us to continue this practice once we returned home. Tips one
could use as they met with people or new clients, include:
•
Utilize LinkedIn
o Businesses start their sourcing by using LinkedIn to do preliminary work in looking at
candidates. It’s not just for recruiting.
o Before your meetings check LinkedIn profiles for the people you’ll be meeting with.
When you find and realize you might have a connection based on information in their
profiles you’ll find that you can ‘fast forward’ to trust more quickly. Having
commonalities is good.
•
What is your personal brand? Your brand is the execution on a promise.
•
Top reason for attending an event or conference? Almost always it is about
networking opportunities.
o Get out of your comfort zone and meet people
o Be approachable and have your nametag visible
o Talk to people you don’t know
o Don’t be the best kept secret (at this conference, in your industry, etc.)
o The power of ‘Hello’ breaks you free.
o Share experiences and build relationships, it’s not just about business
o Have fun!
At some point in your career or your life, you are going to need something and someone in your life
who will be that connection because you took the time to build that connection!

LCAM “WOW” TAKE-A-WAYS
•
What an incredible 4 days! Great leadership training sessions at Leadership Caucus and
Annual Meeting. It’s a fantastic opportunity to network with other incoming chapter
presidents. Lisa Hamilton
•
From Thom Singer, I learned E=MC² in the networking world. Translation: Engagement =
meaningful connections between 2 people. Jean Worrell
•
I was “WOWed” by the energy and enthusiasm of the young women in the Collegiate
Chapter. I was inspired to volunteer to mentor one of them. Rhoda Ailts
•
My WOW factor is and continues to be the friendships that are formed with other EWI
women across the Nation. Every year I attend, I meet another 4-5 ‘real’ connections and
through Face Book and LinkedIn, am able to stay in touch, and reach out for business
questions, networking opportunities and solid B2B exchanges! Belinda Muehlbauer
•
That the delegate body voted to adopt all of the progressive initiatives that we believe will
enhance our organization to both our members and prospective members. Bev Kennedy
CONGRATULATIONS
BEV KENNEDY
Bev was elected to represent the Central Division
on the Corporate Nominating Committee during
the 2014 Annual Meeting.
Thank You
I want to say “thank you” to our Chapter representatives who attended LCAM and helped
with my campaign for Central Division Representative to the Corporate Nominating
Committee. This committee reviews applications for service on the Corporate Board and
proposes a slate of officers and directors that is voted on by the delegates at the Annual
Meeting and will have a large impact on the direction of EWI over the next year.

George Family Foundation Recognizes Twin Cities Women Leaders
By Jean Worrell, MDA Leadership Consulting
At its first-ever “Celebrating Twin Cities Women Leaders” event on September 16, the George Family
Foundation recognized 84 exceptional women leaders making remarkable contributions to building
the Twin Cities. “Celebrating Twin Cities Women Leaders” was held at the Guthrie Theater on
Tuesday, September 16, in conjunction with a preview performance of Wendy Wasserstein’s Pulitzer
Prize-winning play, The Heidi Chronicles.
The event celebrated women who have served as CEO, board chair or president of large corporations,
colleges and universities, government and nonprofit organizations, health care, and major arts
organizations in the Twin Cities. Nine groundbreaking women leaders were also honored
posthumously at the event for their contributions in creating the quality of life present in the Twin
Cities today. Two of our member firms had honorees at this special event: Sandra Davis, Chair and
Founder, MDA Leadership Consulting, and three Carlson executives Trudy Rautio, CEO,
Marilyn Carlson Nelson, and Wendy Carlson.
