series just started, and meets each Sunday at
10:10 a.m. in Miller Hall. It’s strongly recommended for those who want to participate in
our rite of welcome for new members and
new Episcopalians, which will take place

International Bazaar November 15-16
Come and experience an expanded version of our Ten Thousand
Villages Sale Nov. 15-16. Miller Hall will be overflowing with
crafts, jewelry, holiday items, accessories, home decor and much
more! This year new items will be available, plus lunch on Saturday of either an authentic Mexican meal or bean soup; a bake
sale; and samples of food items.
The event will be publicized to appeal to the larger community,
consistent with our Parish objective to make St. Philip’s more
visibly welcoming to the community.
Third Sunday Breakfast will offer a delicious breakfast for a small charge from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Your purchases set in motion a chain of events which will better the lives and families of the people who make what we
buy. At the International Bazaar, one may truly say:
“Appreciation of the care and skill of the maker,
and the caring of the giver,
helps love and justice go the world round”

With All Our Hearts
‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul,
and with all your might. This is the first and greatest commandment.’
There is one simple thing we can do to grow closer to God: orient ourselves fully to God. Orient our hearts.
Orient our souls. Orient our being. Moses received this commandment long ago, and Jesus reminded us of it
when he named it as the greatest commandment. As we consider how to grow closer to God as stewards of
God’s world, we start again with the simple practice of finding our “true north.” How do we orient our hearts,
souls, and beings to God?
Jews have oriented themselves to God with this commandment for centuries. We hear this command in Deuteronomy, where it is followed by the clear direction to “teach them diligently to your children and talk of
them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise in
the morning.” Because this commandment to love God with our full selves has been so important, Jews have
long attached it to their front doors in a tiny scroll, called a mezuzah. As they see or touch it coming in and
out of their homes, they are reminded to love God with their heart, soul and being and to teach this to their
children.
For Christians, each time we make the sign of the cross, touching the top of our foreheads to below our hearts
and from shoulder to shoulder, we orientate ourselves fully to God. In making the sign of the cross we embody the truth that we are united to the death and resurrection of Christ. Nothing can separate us from the love
of God—that is God’s promise to us made on the cross. When we cross ourselves before praying, we put God
first, blessing the time to keep company with God. When we cross ourselves before eating, we put God first,
blessing God for sustaining us from his bounty. When we cross ourselves as we enter church, we put God
first, recognizing that we offer to God praise not only with our lips, but our lives. Stewardship is first and
foremost a practice of orienting to God, putting God first.
We give not to earn God’s love, as there is nothing we can do to earn it. We give simply out of response to
God’s love, recognizing that when we put God first, our lives are blessed. Giving helps us to find our true
North.

And things that go bump in the night
Good Lord Deliver us.
On Friday, October 31 (Halloween!), the EPP will host a simple pizza dinner in the YAC for children and youth (infants
through 12th grade) and their families - and for all those who are missing their own trick-or-treaters!
The dinner will start at 5:00 p.m.; all you have to do is stop by to have a quick dinner before you go Trick or Treating
with your family or friends. We also encourage teens to meet up at the church and share some pizza before heading
out! Please sign up on the board in the parish house foyer so we know how many to prepare for. Want to help out
those frazzled parents trying to get out the door with gaily bedecked small fry on a school night by helping with the dinner? Contact Jill Stewart at [email protected].
Parish Wine and Cheese (& Dessert!) Social Nov. 5
Join our host Ken Henry to enjoy good fellowship and GREAT people, with wine and
good eats at a parish wine social sponsored by EPP! Mark your calendars now for
Wednesday, November 5 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. We'll bring in some bottles, and you bring
some cheese or delicious goodies from your kitchen! Put this event on your calendar now in pen! (A nursery will be provided.)
‘Journey to Forgiveness’ Event Nov. 8
On Sunday, November 8th, the Daughters of the King will host a program given by the Rev. Lyndon Harris on the
Journey to Forgiveness. He will be speaking of the wellness benefits of forgiveness as written by Stanford University’s
Dr. Fred Luskin Harris, and he co-chaired the Gardens of Forgiveness campaign. By using a little wit, a sense of humor and loving touch we will see why forgiveness is a “trainable life skill.”
Harris is a forgiveness coach and an inspirational and motivational speaker, having spoken at numerous conferences
across the US and around the world. He has 20 years experience as a pastor and his work at Ground Zero as priestin-charge of St. Paul’s Chapel, located directly across from the World Trade Center in NYC. He has been written
about widely.
This program is open to St. Philip’s members first as space will be limited. If you have someone who might benefit
from this, please invite them but remember we will take only those on that have signed up on the sheet in the parish
house foyer.
If you have any questions, please call Tissie Stroup (553-0532), Mary Sherwood (966-9628) or Jackie Corlis (8917885). Looking forward to seeing you!

Canterbury Choir
Singing Again
The Canterbury Choir rehearsals have started and are
doing well. Rehearsals are Sunday mornings from 11:10
a.m. - 11:50 a.m. in the choir room. We are scheduled
to sing on the first Sunday of each month as well as the
3:00 p.m. service on Christmas Eve.
There are four members and, if one is missing, we will
not be singing on our appointed date. Additional members are welcome and we will sing November 2nd if all
expect to be present. Give Adele Chappell a call (8774151) if you want to hear more information about the
program.
