KAY DEE KONNECTION Official Newsletter of SC Midlands K∆ Alumnae Chapter June 2014 SC Midlands Alumnae Chapter Launched In early January, a group of women gathered together with a common passion and goal. All were initiates of Kappa Delta Sorority, from several different chapters, who wanted a means to connect with other sisters in the Columbia/Midlands area. That evening, the South Carolina Midlands Kappa Delta Sorority Alumnae Chapter was born. From that moment, energy surged towards hosting a fantastic kick-off event which welcomed over 25 women to meet, greet, and hear plans for the future of their local alumnae chapter. Monthly happy hours followed and continue as well as a philanthropy event in honor of a local sister battling ALS. As of today, there are currently 39 dues paying members as a part of SC Midlands Alumnae Chapter! What can I find in this newsletter? We want to keep you connected to alumnae chapter events (social, philanthropy and more!), news from alumnae chapter members, and a place for you to brag about the great things your initiated chapter is doing today! In This Issue Newsletter Introduction Steppin’ & Sippin’ for Suzy Event Alumnae Chapter Member News Brag Box Kappa Delta Congrats Great turnout at our Kick-Off Event! (March 12, 2014—Thirsty Fellow Restaurant) Welcome from SC Midlands Kappa Delta Alumnae Chapter President... In 1976, I pledged Kappa Delta Sorority at the University of South Carolina. The following January, after a semester of pledging, I was initiated into the Beta Zeta Chapter. I had no idea this would quietly impact my life over time. Over the years connections started to grow and friendships formed through the bond of sisterhood. These friendships began with simple questions such as, “What school did you attend?” and “Were you in a sorority?” Through these conversations I found new friends that are also K∆s. Now, as I watch my daughter journey through her K∆ years I know that she too will have this connection of sisterhood for a lifetime. I have enjoyed the past few months discovering new friends and reconnecting with old. Kappa Delta is still impacting my life. Please join me and connect with so many Kappa Deltas in our Midlands! AOT! -Kelly Steppin’ & Sippin’ for Suzy When Suzy Shealy’s story was brought to the attention of the Alumnae Chapter officers, they saw an amazing opportunity for philanthropy and sisterhood for the chapter members, all while supporting the Beta Zeta initiate battling ALS/Lou Gehrig's disease. The South Carolina chapter of the ALS Association was hosting “Midlands Walk to Defeat ALS” and the SC Midlands KΔ joined Team Suzy for the event. Over 30 Kappa Delta women participated in the walk, sporting the group’s t-shirt! As a whole, Team Suzy raised over $7,000 for research to find a cure for ALS! After the walk, chapter members enjoyed a delicious brunch at the home of Beta Zeta KΔ, Betsi Jordan! Sisters sipped on champagne, feasted on homemade grits, a waffle bar, fruit salad and enjoyed each other’s company. The afternoon created special memories for all involved and everyone was thrilled to support the amazing Suzy Shealy!
