The students self-nominate for these roles. Each student who nominates for Student Council is required to present a short speech based on sustained good behaviour, leadership, initiative, sound organizational ability, caring for others and public speaking. While the Faction Captains also need to demonstrate a positive attitude and an interest in physical education and sport as well as the above mentioned leadership qualities. Current Year Four and Year Five students cast their votes along with the staff to determine who will fill these positions for 2015. Each staff vote is counted as one vote, the same as the students. There may be a perception that the voting system is 'screened' but this is not the case. All students have a fair and equal chance and this democratic process has proved to be very successful over many years at Kardinya Primary School. The students are very perceptive and choose wisely. Class Lists for 2015 Our leadership team and teachers will shortly be engaged in the process of forming class lists for 2015. The compilation of class groupings is a process involving many considerations. We deliberate on factors such as academic abilities, individual student needs, gender balance, social considerations, student relationships, friendship networks and previous class placements/teachers. Forming class lists is a difficult task for all concerned as occasionally regardless of the care taken someone may be disappointed. Parents are encouraged to have positive conversations with children in the lead up to 2015. Parents of students not returning to KPS for 2015 Please email [email protected] to notify the school if your child/children will not be attending KPS in 2015. Students in Year Four/Five have already provided their 2015 enrolment information to the school. If emailing is difficult please send written confirmation of 2015 enrolment information to the School Office by Friday 7 November 2014. 2015 JAN School Office opens We are rapidly approaching the end of the school year. Information is being sent to you via notes, calendars, Facebook and this newsletter. The school uses a variety of communication channels to inform parents of upcoming events and important dates. Please read your newsletters and note key dates. If we have to change a date or an event we will notify you as soon as possible. 27 JAN 30 Class lists on noticeboard outside Library @ 12pm Dogs at School While we understand and support families who wish to walk with dogs to school, we are not able to allow dogs around classrooms, walkways and school buildings, even if on a leash. Families are asked to secure dogs in the shade, clear of walkways and access points. Please put yourself in the shoes of a person who is uncomfortable around dogs and ensure they can use paths or walkways without concern. Space for Enrolments in 2015 Although Kindergarten and Pre-Primary enrolments have been coming in, we still have spaces for more children. Please let friends and neighbours know that Kardinya PS is a great school. Planning for next year is well underway and we still have spaces in all years, but staffing and resourcing for 2015 will need to be finalized soon. Speeding in School Zones Just a reminder to our School Community that when dropping off and picking up children before and after School, that the speed limit is 40 kilometres per hour within school zones at these times. Staff Parking Zone Parents are asked not to use the Staff Car Park situated in front of the School Administration office for safety reasons. Ample parking for parents can be found in the parking area clearly signposted and accessible from Ochiltree Way near the Harry Field Reserve. Your cooperation is requested to ensure ongoing student safety. The previous weeks had been busy with before school and lunchtime training. All competitors did their best with some students excelling and running, jumping or throwing personal bests. On Monday students from Year Six and Seven travelled to Lakeside Recreation Centre to participate in games against schools from around the Perth metropolitan area. Below are the results. 1st WINTHROP 2nd ARDROSS 3rd KARDINYA 4th MELVILLE 5th RICHMOND 6th MT PLEASANT The girls team used the day as a learning curve to develop their skills and understanding of what it takes to be a good basketball team and player. They had a most enjoyable day, winning half their games and finishing 5th out of eight teams. The boys team played a terrific, high standard of basketball throughout the day. Finishing undefeated in the qualifying rounds they fronted up to an older team from CBC Fremantle in the final. In a closely fought contest CBC edged out Kardinya 33 to 25. It was the closest any team had come to the winners so it was an achievement to be proud of. Thank you to Gia Burd who coached the boys and to Brad Karafil for scoring. MEASUREMENT IN B1 On Monday Mrs Swan visited Miss Smith’s Year Four/Five class to see them working on ‘Indirect Comparison’. The focus question was: “A farmer has two paddocks on his farm. If you were a hungry cow, which would you prefer?” Students were asked to compare the two shapes. They needed to choose their own equipment to solve the problem. They all discussed how they did this which allowed them to hear other people’s ideas. As an extension students were asked to use a formula to work out the area of the two paddocks. Don't forget the “Kids Card Designs” order form. Reminder payment is due back at school this Friday 7 November. Next P&C Meeting is Wednesday 19 Nov 7:30pm in the staff room. ALL WELCOME Mrs Mel Edgar P&C President Hi Everyone All parents or caregivers should by now have received a order form for next years Graduation Shirts, if not please enquire at the front office or in the Uniform Shop on Tuesday morning. These forms need to be completed and returned by 11 November (this Tuesday—no late orders) so we can get the orders started. If your child is not returning to Kardinya Primary School next year please still complete the 'not returning section’ and hand into the school. It will make my job easier if I don’t have to chase up outstanding forms. This is a once only order and no further orders are done later on next year. Charity Food Drive: Due to the overwhelming support last year the School Council have decided to again hold a charity food drive for those in need this Christmas – It would be great if you could please donate one or two non-perishable food item(s) in the collection box in the front office. Collection will run until 17 December. Ms Crawford's class Year 1/2 D1 are looking for some corks and shoeboxes with lids. If you have any that you would like to donate please bring to D1. Also for all our fashion conscious tiny little ladies in Pre-primary and Kindy, after much wheeling and dealing I have managed to order size 2 school dresses and now have these in stock.
