howard worked very hard to provide
for his family and was very particular
about cutting his grass and would often
be found mowing for his neighbors. he
loved wrestling, baking birthday cakes
for loved ones, and watching soap
operas, especially “The young and the
restless.” he also enjoyed listening to
pastor mcdonald’s sermons.
mr. may was preceded in death by his
parents; son, ricky may; brothers,
leroy may and cecil Kelley; and sister, mildred merritt.

she was a homemaker. she enjoyed
embroidering, singing, patsy cline &
gospel music, and was a member of
souls harbor pentecostal church.
sharon was preceded in death by
father, James a. perkins, sr., mother,
leota darlene mcKnight, and husband
Walter mcNight, Jr., two brothers,
charles "sonny" uffleman, and James
"Jimmie" perkins, and a sister, iris
perkins.

Fretta ellen Neff, 97, of st. Joseph,
passed away Friday, october 31, 2014
at a local health care facility.

Fretta was born on september 2, 1917
in bigelow, mo. to earl allen and
virginia mable (Flowers) gresham.
she worked for Jones store for over
ten years and retired in 1972.
Fretta married robert W. Neff on June
4, 1955. he preceded her in death
November 3, 1989. Fretta was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers,
Ferrell, brooks and rex gresham; and
sister, phyllis henderson.
surviving family includes sister, Joan
elms and eight nieces and nephews.
mrs. Neff has been cremated under
the direction of heaton-bowmansmith & sidenfaden chapel, st.
Joseph. a private Family service will
be held at a later date.

orley h. Newkirk, 85, savannah,
mo. died Wednesday, october 22,
2014 at his home.
he was born march 28, 1929 to david
and mattie (brown) Newkirk in Kiowa,
Ks.
orley married mary Jane sauter on
april 3, 1949. he proudly served in the
u.s. army during the Korean War. he
farmed in clarksdale, mo., and retired
from Wire rope after 28 years. orley
was a member of central christian
church and a former member of
clarksdale christian church where he
served as deacon and elder. he was
also a member of andrew county lake
club, gower goodtimers and a regular
at the senior center.
he was preceded in death by his parents; sister, docia morgan; and brothers, loren, Wayne, howard and alva
Newkirk.
survivors: wife of 65 years, mary;
children, rickey Newkirk (shanin),
connie myers (Ted), marilyn Wehrli

Tuesday, october 21, 2014 at a local
healthcare facility.
she was born september 10, 1918 to
oscar and rose (Wenger) stuber in st.
Joseph. marjorie married oliver louis
schneider on June 9, 1940. he preceded her in death on may 20, 1992.
she was a graduate of oak grove
high school and attended one year of
business school. she was also a
bookkeeper for Wonder bread bakery
for over twenty-five years.

methodist church where she was an
active member since she was ten.
she was also preceded in death by her
parents; brother, Wilbur stuber; and
son, Terry schneider.

lewis “lee” shifflett, 86, amity,
mo., passed from this life on Wednesday, october 29, 2014 at Fairview
village, King city, mo.
he was born January 27, 1928 in
calhoun, mo, to Jake leonard shifflett
and pearl bell (Kampe) shifflett.
he joined the u.s. army in 1950 and
served during the Korean conflict. lee
married lucy Katherine Fischer on
July 12, 1952 in the army chapel at
camp crowder, mo.
lee worked at dugdale packing
company after he was discharged from
the army until october 1979 when the
company discontinued operation. in
1967, lee began farming part-time and
after dugdale’s closed he went into
farming full time.
lee served on the deKalb county Fair
board for many years and also served
as its president and was a member of
the amity lions club . he also served
as the president of the moKan saddle
club. he was instrumental in planning
and participated in the 1960 pony
express centennial reride from
st.Joseph to salt lake city, utah. lee
was the first rider out of st. Joseph in
1960. he loved to share his stories
from this ride. horses were always a
large part of lee’s life.
he was preceded in death by his wife
of 60 years, lucy; his parents; his stepsister, lottie Kerns; his stepbrother,
Thomas miller; and brothers gene and
clyde shifflett.
lee is survived by his son, steve &
wife laura, King city, mo; grandsons,
stuart (Jordan) shifflett, rea, mo and
Todd (alyssa) shifflett, st. Joseph;
great-granddaughter, Finnley shifflett;
brother, raymond (betty) shifflett,
clarksdale, mo; along with many
nieces and nephews.

ernie Winslow, age 41, stewartsville,
mo., was born January 14, 1973 in
california and passed away october 1,
2014 in las palmas, spain.
he was a graduate of stewartsville cii class of 1991. ernie worked 14 years
for diamond offshore drilling inc as a
safety supervisor.
he leaves behind his wife angie of 21
years, their daughter erin 15, along
with many family members and
beloved friends. ernie enjoyed hunting,
fishing and most of all watching his
daughter play sports.
