The Edna Staebler Research Fellowship is awarded for a program of research judged to increase
knowledge and expand understanding of the diverse cultures of the folk and founding peoples of
Waterloo Region/Waterloo County. Established by the Friends of the Joseph Schneider Haus in 1994,
it was named in honour of Edna Staebler, an early female journalist and researcher with a special
interest in Mennonite foodways. A few years later Edna herself endowed it.
This unique fellowship was designed to encourage research across a broad range of disciplines, in
different media, and through methods such as archival work, narrative or linguistic analysis, or critique
from within specific cultural traditions. Administered by the Friends of the Joseph Schneider Haus, and
announced each December for the following year, the award is accompanied by a research stipend of
$1,000. Research Fellows are expected to submit a report of their work at the end of their term and to
deliver a public presentation during Heritage Week in February the following year.
