Dear St. Robert School community and friends,
Spring can be a long time coming along Lake Michigan. For 41 years, however, the St. Robert community has figured out a way to heat things up, starting with a Mardi Gras celebration in 1973 that later became a St. Patrick’s
Day dinner, and is now the Emerald Auction. The single largest fundraiser for St. Robert School, the auction raises
money that's essential to the school’s daily operation.
And over the years, what’s become essential to the Emerald Auction is you. We are so very grateful to the hundreds of parents, teachers, students, staff, family, alumni, parishioners and friends of St. Robert’s who volunteer,
donate, plan and work towards making this annual event such a highlight of the school year. (Thanks, too, to our
hosts at the Italian Conference Center for welcoming us in once we outgrew—and grew and grew—our space in
the school!) Every Emerald Auction has its unique feel and flair. What never changes, though, is the emphasis on
fun.
Of course, this is a school auction, so please appreciate that there’s a little homework (and one textbook, this
catalog) required to get the most out of your evening:
• First, study this catalog for the many amazing items, experiences, and sign-up parties on offer.
• Second, get ready for the Live Auction. With new items and a new, professional auctioneer this year,
it promises to be more exciting than ever. Team up with others to make a winning bid, or—talk about
smart money!—buy a Live Auction Raffle Ticket the night of the event. Win, and you just might be able to
choose the raffle item of your dreams.
• Third, we’ve got a new raffle this year, the iChance, with not one, not two, but three amazing prizes: an
iPad Mini, a full-size iPad, and a brand-new MacBook Air.
• Fourth, no school day is complete without some exercise, so polish your dancing shoes. After an exquisite meal together, our musical guest, the famous Five Card Studs, will have everyone up and out on the
dance floor.
Thank you again for supporting St. Robert School. For almost 100 years, it has helped forge the faith, and minds,
of generations of students. Your contributions to the Emerald Auction will help the school welcome another century’s worth of “saints and leaders.”
And never forget the fun spirit that started it all. In the words of Margaret Mathews Sankovitz—school parent/
grandparent, parishioner, proud alumna (1947), and attendee of that very first evening in 1973 and almost every
one since—“Tis a fine evening. Tis!”

Auction Rules
St. Robert School, the Home & School Association and its Emerald Auction Committee warrant neither the quality
nor the value of items presented. All items are sold “as is.” Dollar values are estimates often determined by the
donor, and are not guaranteed by the Emerald Auction Committee for tax purposes or market value. All auctioned
items expire on March 15, 2015, unless otherwise stated.
All sales are final. In order to bid on items at the Emerald Auction, auction goers will be required to give a credit
card (MasterCard or Visa) or a signed check made out to St. Robert Home & School Association. If upon checkout
one should choose to pay in cash, the check will be shredded and any credit card provided will not be charged.
Successful bidders shall pay in full the evening of the Emerald Auction. Items may be removed only after obtaining
a paid receipt from Checkout. Items may be removed if you have either made arrangements to pre-pay or you have
checked out and received your final statement.
All purchased items must be paid for and removed from the premises by the end of the evening unless other arrangements are made with the Auction committee.
SILENT AUCTION
1. The Silent Auction will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014 in the Festa Ballroom
at the Italian Conference Center. It will continue per our auction schedule.
2. All items will be sold to the highest bidder who meets or surpasses any minimum bid noted on the
BidPal Bidding device and properly meets or exceeds the stated minimum raise level.
3. All Silent Auction items are arranged by categories for personal inspection. Each item has a description of its value. Make your bid by utilizing BidPal and follow the prompt steps to enter your bid.
Confirm that your bid has been accepted.
4. Each increase must equal or exceed the minimum raise stated on the bidding device.
5. The closing bid highlighted by BidPal at the end of the Silent Auction will constitute a winning bid. In
case of a dispute at the time of closing, bidders will be given an opportunity to submit a final written
bid to the Auction Committee, with the highest bidder being declared the winner.
6. All bidders on items with alcoholic beverages must be 21 years old to be eligible.
VOICE AUCTION
1. The Voice Auction will be held in the Pompeii Grand Ballroom at the Italian
Conference Center during dinner.
2. Each successful bidder will sign an acknowledgement form indicating the winning bid amount to
confirm sale.
3. The Auction Committee reserves the right to repeat the sale of any disputed item.

Checkout
All attendees who are planning to bid will be required to register their MasterCard or VISA card at
check-in. A signed check made payable to St. Robert Emerald Auction can also be provided.
Checkout will begin at 10:00pm in the Festa Ballroom. All items must be paid for and taken home
that evening.
This year, bidders will be using BidPal to place bids on their items. BidPal can be accessed using
your own personal device or using a BidPal personal bidding device. If you choose to use your
personal device, please be sure to bring it to the Emerald Auction fully charged. We cannot guarantee there will be charging stations available if needed. If you choose to use a BidPal personal
bidding device, it will be provided to you at check-in. BidPal will allow you to track your bids, place
maximum bids, view items that have not been bid on and alert you when you have been outbid
on an item. There also will be video screens in both ballrooms that will show bidding statuses.
At checkout in the Festa Ballroom, you will pick up your items and receipt(s) and, if paying by
check, you can fill in the amount on the check provided at check-in. You may receive separate
receipts for Silent Auction items, Live Auction items and for donations to any special campaigns.
Please keep all receipts and certificates provided at checkout, as they will be your record of
items purchased and the only means provided for you to contact a donor for services purchased.
All items must be paid for and picked up by the end of the evening unless
other arrangements are made with the auction committee.

St. Robert School — 1915 to present

s St. Robert School approaches its Centennial, the humble
but proud beginning of the school is recalled. When the
parish was founded and incorporated in 1912, the parishioners
hope was to have a school. The first permanent building was
built and opened as a church in the fall of 1913 with the intention of opening a school on the second floor of the building.
In 1915, Fr. Farrel Patrick Reilly, founding pastor, invited the
Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa to staff the school and on
September 15, 1915, Sr. Aloysius Reilly (no relation to Fr. Reilly)

its fine reputation in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
Athletics have always been an important part of the educational experience at St. Robert School. Until 1978, organized,
league football was part of the extracurricular program. Many
great teams were fielded over the years - many of them champions. In 1978, because of declining enrollment and increasing
costs, football was dropped.
Basketball has always been big at St. Robert. Initially both
basketball and football were boys only sports - and only in the
upper grades. For many years now, basketball has been offered to both boys and girls beginning in the middle grades. In

St. Robert Parish celebrated its Centennial during 2012. In 2015
St. Robert School will celebrate its Centennial! Parishioners
can take pride in the long history of the superlative Catholic
education that has been fostered by the Parish. St. Robert
School is an asset to the Shorewood and Milwaukee communities and has produced thousands of alumni who have reflected
brightly on St. Robert School and parish as they participate as
productive, moral and ethical citizens.

Angelique Allen Memorial Scholarship
In 2013, we sadly lost one of our own. St. Robert School mom Angelique Allen passed
away from breast cancer at the all-too-early age of 38. Angelique left behind three children, Amber (St. Robert Class of ‘11), Gabi (Seventh Grade), and Tre (Fourth Grade).

There are many fundraising auctions being held this spring, but very, very few anywhere will offer anything like
this historic opportunity. Milwaukee Symphony concertmaster and violinist Frank Almond will play a private
concert for 20 people at Katie and Mike Weber’s gracious home on the shores of Lake Michigan. Sharing the
spotlight with Frank will be the violin he’s honored to play, the “ex-Lipinski,” a famed Stradivarius violin that will
celebrate its 300th birthday next year, and recently made world headlines after its theft and recovery. Fewer
than 500 violins made by famed Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari survive today. Frank Almond holds the Charles
and Marie Caestecker Concertmaster Chair at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He returned to the MSO after holding positions as Concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev, and Guest Concertmaster of the London Philharmonic under Kurt Masur. He holds two degrees from the Juilliard School, has held
several academic positions and is currently on the faculty at Northwestern University. In April 2013 he released
A Violin’s Life, a recording featuring works and composers directly associated with the “Lipinski” Stradivarius,
charting in the Billboard Top 10 in its first week of release. This evening will offer an introduction to Frank and

The 2014 Emerald Auction
Student Art Projec�
A favorite, if relatively recent, auction tradition has been the
annual student art project. It has taken many forms, ranging from individual self-portraits to last year’s collaborative
crucifixes. This year brings something entirely new.
The 2014 Emerald Auction student art activity arose from
multiple desires. First, we wanted to help students capture
the spirit of St. Robert School from their point of view. Since
“a picture is worth a thousand words,” we chose photography as our medium. That choice also meant students would
get to work seriously in school in a medium that they might
not have encountered in (or out of) art class before.
This was no small task, but fortunately, St. Robert School
is blessed with a treasure trove of talent and generosity!
This year’s committee was lucky enough to have parent and
professional photographer Patrick Manning donate his time,
talent and expertise. At school assemblies, Patrick spoke to
the students about how to best compose a photo and create
an interesting shot. He also discussed with the students
how to edit and refine their work, and how to catalog and
organize photography. Finally, he also introduced us to the
many possible photography finishing options.
Laurie Yingling, meanwhile, coordinated the use of the
school’s iPads, helped to catalog photos, and taught the
students how to use the new technology to the best of its
ability. And once again, Donna Bailey rearranged her month
of February and figured out a way to incorporate a new medium into the old curriculum.
Of course, none of these activities would be possible
without the help of a multitude of parent volunteers and our
thanks goes out to each of you! Lastly but never least, the
students rose to the challenge with great curiosity, cooperation, big smiles and budding ability. We are so proud of all of
them!

For this year’s student art project, parents Patrick Manning and Martha Flaherty, along with art teacher
Donna Bailey, had students explore their St. Robert surroundings with an artist’s eye...through an iPad’s lens.
Students from each grade then collaborated to produce these stunning collages, each custom-mounted and
innovatively framed with gallery-quality results. Twelve collages are available: one per grade, plus one larger
one focusing on the school as a whole and another larger one focusing on the church.

and Gardening Lessons (Sponsored by Cafe Corazón)
Have the Victory Garden Initiative (VGI) team bring gardening into your own backyard, literally. Volunteers will
come during their Blitz (May 10 - 24th) and build a 4’ x 8’ raised garden bed (organic soil is included) that can
get you started as a sustainable, urban farmer! Date/time during the Blitz will be determined by VGI (after all,
they are trying to coordinate over 500 bed installations). But that’s not all; this package includes their set of
6 organic regional vegetable plants suited to our area, each in 3-inch pots: Aunt Molly’s Ground Cherry, Aunt
Ruby’s Green Tomato, Amish Paste Tomato, Beaver Dam Pepper, Sheepnose Pimento Pepper, Amish Deer

931 1957 Topps Bob Pettit Autographed Rookie Card
This is a 1957 Topps autographed Bob Pettit rookie card. Pettit played 11 seasons in the NBA, all with the
Milwaukee/St. Louis Hawks (1954-1965). He was the first recipient of the NBA’s Most Valuable Player Award.
He also won the NBA All-Star Game MVP award four times, a feat matched only by Kobe Bryant. He was
inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1971. He was also selected as one of the
NBA’s top 50 players ever in 1996. This card has been authenticated by PSA/DNA. PSA is the most respected
autograph authentication company in the business. It has been encapsulated in a tamper-proof case and serial numbered.

942 Duke Snider Framed 8x10 Autographed Picture

This 8x10 photograph was signed by Duke Snider (1926-2011) of the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers. Snider, nicknamed ‘The Silver Fox’ and ‘The Duke of Flatbush’, was a Major League Baseball center fielder and left-handed batter who played for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and San Francisco Giants.
He was an 8 time All-Star selection and a 2 time World Series champion. The Los Angeles Dodgers retired his
number (#4) and he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980. The signature has been authenticated
by PSA/DNA, the most respected authenticator in the business. PSA issued a Certificate of Authenticity and
a sticker attached to the photograph with a matching serial number. This 8x10 comes framed in a beautiful
cherry finished frame, acid free matting, and UV protected glass.
