January 10, 2015 Parshat Shemot AN EVENING OF MAGIC AND MYSTERY! On Motzei Shabbat, January 31st, at 8:00pm, the YINW host its annual winter event and this one will have you at the edge of your folding chair! Our opening act is a man who needs no introduction, magician Francis Menotti. But we are just getting warmed up. Our headliner is none other than David Darwin aka The One Man Sideshow. Yes, you may remember him from America’s Got Talent! That’s right! We pulled out all the stops! All this for just $54 per person and includes a lavish dairy buffet, a splitting of the pot, and raffle prizes. And it gets better! All proceeds go to benefit your good friend and mine, the YINW! Why have you not RSVPed yet?! Email Mordechai Gampel at [email protected] and let him know you are in! If you are a business owner or just a generous person with cool stuff who can contribute a raffle prize to the evening, let Mordechai know. Mazal Tov Mazal Tov to our dear members, Tamar and Joshua Zimmelman, on the birth of a baby boy. Mazal Tov as well to big sisters, Eliana and Diana, and to the entire family. Bris info, I’Y’H, to follow. Growing Families Growing Together: Shabbat Luncheon Our thanks to Shoshana Epstein, Judith Gutman, Melinda Hilsenrath, Talya Nof, Natalie Pavel and Rochelle Taub for putting together this most succseful and encouraging event. As a shul, the growing families are what give us nachas and serve as our inspiration. The gathering begins after Shabbat davening at 12:00pm. 19 Tevet 5775 Upcoming Schedule Friday 1/9 – 18 Tevet Shacharit Candlelighting Mincha Shabbat 1/10 – 19 Tevet Shacharit Latest Shema Young Families Luncheon Rabbi’s Shiur Mincha Seudah Shlishit Ma’ariv Shabbat Ends Shacharit Mincha/Ma’ariv An Incredible Shabbat for an Incredible Soul—Phillip Bach, a”h Tuesday 1/13 – 22 Tevet Directory in the Works The 2014-2015 digital version will be released in the coming weeks. Please note that the directory is a Member Directory, and although we would love to include all our very close friends who support the shul in so many endearing and brilliant ways, the directory is a listing of our members/associate members. If you would like a clarification as to your status for 2014-2015 (and no, it is not purely based on being current with dues or in—worst shul phrase ever—good standing), please email [email protected]. Unity Event at Ramaz with Moms of ‘Our Boys’ On Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm, February 8th, the mothers of ‘our three boys,’ Rachel Fraenkel, Bat Galim Shaer and Iris Yifrach will be at The Ramaz Upper School (current site of Kehilat Jeshurun under Rabbi Haskel Lookstein) at a large community-wide solidarity event to Continue the Unity and love of Israel that the mothers and their three sons, Naftali, z’l, Gilad, z’l and Eyal, z’l inspired across the globe. Hosted by KJ, the event is sponsored by major synagogues across the city, with a prestigious Host Committee. Rachel Fraenkel, Bat Galim Shaer and Iris Yifrach, touched the world with their grace, strength and faith. During the three weeks that their sons, z’l, were missing, the Jewish world was united in hope. The event promises to be the opportunity to re-ignite that feeling of unity and hope in our community in the presence of these incredible women. 8:00 am 4:30 pm Monday 1/12 – 21 Tevet Please help us welcome Meira and Dovid Statman, who are with us for Shabbat checking out the community. In commemoration of the first yahrzeit for Philip Bach, Feivish Shmuel ben Dovid, a”h, a special Shabbat in Philip’s memory will take place on February 21st. At 4:00pm, Rabbi Septimus will deliver a shiur entitled, Numbers and Judaism: A Shiur in Loving Memory of a Man Who Loved Numbers. Following 4:30pm mincha, Mindy and David invite everyone to a special seudah shlishit, where David and Matthew share words of Torah and memories of Phillip. The Shabbat will be topped off with a keynote address at 8:30pm, Saturday night at the shul by Chava Willig Levy. An award-winning author, powerful advocate and renowned motivational speaker, Chava Willig Levy is famous for her humor, passion and compassion. As a person who gets around in a motorized wheelchair, she has shattered many stereotypes about people with disabilities, be they in the workplace, in the community, in the classroom or on the college campus. Her memoir, A Life Not with Standing (JDAM 2015), will be available for purchase at the event at a specially discounted cost of just $20, and 10% of the proceeds will go to the FDNow Foundation in Phillip, a”h’s, memory. If you would like to participate in this special Shabbat, please see Harry Dublinsky or email him at [email protected]. 9:00 am 9:40 am 12:00 pm 3:45 pm 4:20 pm 4:45 pm 5:25 pm 5:32 pm Sunday 1/11 – 20 Tevet Shacharit I Shacharit II Ramban on Parshat HaShuva Maariv@KBH Maariv@BKNW Warm Welcomes 8:00 am 4:27 pm 4:35 pm Shacharit I Shacharit II Maariv@KBH Maariv@BKNW 6:20 am 7:45 am 8:30 pm 9:00 pm 10:15 pm 6:30 am 7:45 am 9:00 pm 10:15 pm Wednesday 1/14 – 23 Tevet Shacharit I Shacharit II Maariv@KBH Maariv@BKNW 6:30 am 7:45 am 9:00 pm 10:15 pm Thursday 1/15 – 24 Tevet Shacharit I Shacharit II Maariv@KBH Maariv@BKNW 6:20 am 7:45 am 9:00 pm 10:15 pm Friday 1/16 – 25 Tevet Shacharit I Shacharit II Candlelighting Mincha 6:30 am 7:45 am 4:35 pm 4:45 pm From YINW Security If you see something, say something! Here’s number 10. There’s probably no better hike in the heat of summer than Nahal Yehudiah, where the water is so deep, you have no choice but to swim to get to the other side. There are actually some 12 trails in this canyon off Highway 87, just northeast of the Sea of Galilee. But the one that ranks on our top 10 list is “upper” Nahal Yehudiah. The path starts by passing a deserted Syrian village that was built on top of an earlier Jewish town from the RomanByzantine period. You’ll pass a cattle-grazing field before heading down into the valley towards the 20-meter high Yehudiah Falls. That’s where the fun starts. There are two cliffs to climb down, using rungs and ladders drilled into the side of the rock—one is four meters long, the second nine meters, which ends in the pool. Make sure your belongings are wrapped up in waterproof bags, or do like some of the more creative hikers who pack small inflatable boats to float their gear across! There’s another pool after that (though you can walk it if you don’t slip). When you’re done swimming, you can backtrack to the start on a dry trail at the top of the nahal.
