49295 `09 Spring Newsletter - Seguin Conservation Society
A Milestone for a True Woman of Seguin
www.seguinconservation.org
No matter what name you may know
her by, Mrs. Woods, Virginia, Mother,
Grandma or Ama, you are blessed to
simply know her. Believe it, or not, her
100th birthday is coming up and we are
celebrating her in grand style. Mrs.
Woods is a founding member of the
Seguin Conservation Society and the
perfect gift to honor this milestone
birthday would be for at least 100 new
members to join the SCS. These memberships will ensure the continued support of the Conservation Society’s programs to tell the story of the history of
Seguin and to protect its incredible
architecture.
The weekend of April 5th and 6th,
2014 will give everyone the opportunity to say hello and give her that gift.
WINTER 2014
The festivities begin with a
ceremony at the King Family
Cemetery where the Moon
McGehee Chapter of the
Daughters of the Republic of
Texas will place a medallion
on the grave of Mrs. Woods
grandmother, Euphemia
Texas Ashby King.
Visitors will be treated to a
presentation by family actors
portraying Juan Seguin
(Virginia’s Grandson,
William Wayne Windle) and
Euphemia, (Virginia’s granddaughter-in-law, Mary Jane Windle)
retelling the Great Story of Seguin,
Texas. Following a lunch on your own,
you can be a guest at the King Ranger
Mrs. Virginia Woods
Theatre, enjoy “True Women” on the
big screen and witness a special
announcement by a special guest from
Texas Theatre hub of activity
As we begin a New Year the Stephen and Mary Birch
Texas Theatre continues to be a hub of activity. We started the year on Friday, Jan. 3 with the kick-off meeting of
the staffs of the Community Council of South Central
Texas.
Then on Saturday, Jan. 25 we had our first of three
Heart of Texas Road Show concerts for 2014. Featured
entertainer was Fiddlin Frenchie Burke along with
Amber Digby, Justin Treviño and our own Dottsy. It was
a great show and we had snowbirds here from Kansas,
Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Kansas. We also
tallied guests from over 12 area communities including
San Antonio and Austin. Between our marketing efforts
and those of the HOT organizations we reach audiences
all over Texas and beyond.
Mark your calendars for the next concerts that will be
on June 21 featuring Pretty Miss Norma Jean and Sept.
21 featuring T. Graham Brown. We are also negotiating
to have Larry Gatlin here in September too. Visit our
website…www.thetexas.org for details.
Also, we ended January hosting a very special gathering. Over 75 Main Street directors from across the state
gathered at the Texas for four days of training and to

exchange ideas. They also toured downtown Seguin with
our Main Street Director Mary Jo Langford. We were
honored to have them here in our facility and to make a
presentation to the group about our efforts and this
organizations great membership support.
February brought several private rentals as well as our
annual Valentine’s Dinner which was another great success. We also were the central site for all the Arts Fest
events including the LaPanchaga.
Coming up in April will be two very exciting events.

Are your dues up-to-date?
Check out the date on the mailing label attached to
the front of your newsletter. If it doesn’t say 2014
on it, it’s most likely you haven’t paid your current
dues. You will see a short form to pay your dues on
back as well. We would appreciate you becoming
current so you can be informed of all our happenings.
Another busy year for the Conservation Society
Dear Fellow Conservationists,
We are in the midst of one cold winter and our annual membership drive. This is the 62nd year of the Seguin Conservation
Society and we continue to work to honor our history and share
it with everyone.
A whirlwind of events and activities keep the Society busy.
The City of Seguin celebrated it’s 175th year this past August
with another evening of fun, fellowship and food. Our annual
homemade ice cream contest exceeded everyone’s expectations.
We had record breaking entries in the ice cream contest which
always proves to be a culinary treat, especially for the judges!
The entertainment from our local youth was “STAR” quality.
We had a great silent auction and we thank all of our supporters
for furnishing items to make it so successful.
This year during Pecan Fest, we hosted the 1st Offical Pecan
Pie Contest for the State of Texas. Maria Arriaga took home the
honors for the winning pie. In December, we had another successful Tour of Homes. Seven homeowners opened their homes
to share with many area residents and we greatly appreciate
them doing this. We already have two homes willing to be on
this year’s tour. If you are interested in sharing your home with
our community, please contact us so we can make plans.
We continue to have fun filled luncheons each month at the
Moore House. Please call Cascades to make your reservations.
We have three more luncheons before summer break!
The Society was also very fortunate to receive a very generous
contribution from Caterpillar to be used for various SCS educational and historical projects. In April the SCS will be assisting
Virginia Wood’s family in celebrating her 100th birthday. Mark
your calendar for the weekend of April 4-6 for the festivities.
Virginia was one of the founding members of the society and she
expressed her desire to have 100 new members join the Seguin
Conservation Society this year for her birthday. So, if you
haven’t paid your dues or if you know someone who isn’t a
member, please step up and help us make Virginia’s wish come
true.
We hope you have responded to our membership letter you
recently received. We depend on your support to continue our
vision in Seguin, preserving and protecting buildings that hold
our heritage and tell our stories. Please contact us if you have an
interest in becoming more involved.
Successful Heritage Tour of Homes
Once again, the Heritage Tour of
Homes this past December, was a
tremendous success!
We can’t thank those “home owners”
enough for allowing curious patrons to
wander through their houses! People
that take the tours express their appreciation over and over again for weeks following the event! It is a chance to learn
about the history of Seguin and its former citizens as well as getting a glimpse
of how current owners have made
changes to the structures. We had a
wonderful variety of architectural styles
this year.
The Lazy U Ranch owned by Nancy
and Craig Russell and located at the end
of Naumann Road on Lake Placid is a
tranquil setting which holds the original
cabin, within the larger structure. The
Russells have a large collection of military and cowboy artifacts which
intrigued many of the tourees.
The Sonka House owned by Paul
Hansen located at 617 N. Guadalupe
Street beautifully displayed antique furniture so fitting to this historically significant structure. Paul has plans underway to open the house as a Bed &
Breakfast. The possibilities are great
with a full basement to be used as a fine
dining and wine cellar.
Emmanuel Lutheran Church located
on N. Travis Street in downtown Seguin
opened its doors to show and tell about
the founding of the church and to share
some of their historic archives.
The Magnolia Hotel, owned by Erin
and Jim Ghedi, helped to satisfy curiousity about the progress being made on
the continuing renovation of this former
stagecoach stop in Seguin.
Renee Burek, owner of the former
Burges House located at 215 W. Nolte
Street, not only had those interested in
seeing the current style in which the
house is decorated, but also was visited
by a relative of the original owner of the
home, Mrs. Mary Margaret Burges and
her daughter, Bettie Lee Wilson. They
shared much about the house in earlier
years.
Norma and Ron Colunga opened their
home located at 605 W. Austin, once the
Walter Nolte House, to offer a taste of
Victorian style.
Angela Dickerson’s newly refurbished
art deco wonder located at 1334 Keller
Lane, was a “retro” highlight!
Many volunteers helped by serving as
docents or baking cookies served in The
First Church at Heritage Village.
Each year we try to bring a bit of
Seguin’s history to you through our
Lou Ann Jackel, President
Heritage Tour of Homes. Without willing home owners this couldn’t happen!
Thanks again to our participants!
If you are interested in having your
home on tour, please contact Marty Keil
at 560-6291. We are looking forward to
next years tour planned for December
6th.
CONSIDER US!!!!
We ask that when you are making a memorial or honorarium in
rememberance of someone that
you consider The Seguin
Conservation Society or the The
Stephen and Mary Birch Texas
Theatre.
With your gift you will help
preserve Seguin’s history and
remember someone who was a
part of it. We will send a notice to
the family of the gift and you will
receive an acknowledgement
from us as well.
You can mail monetary gifts to
the Seguin Conservation Society,
P.O. Box 245, Seguin, TX, 78156
or the Texas Theatre, 425 N.
Austin St., Seguin, TX, 78155.
Theatre activities
Continued from Page 1
April 4-7 our own Pat Hoppe
will be directing the play
“Mountain Top,” which will
feature the talents of Hugh
“Papa” Douglas and Dr.
Delores Major. The play is
about the night before Martin
Luther King Jr.’s death when a
mysterious woman pays a
visit. Playwright Katori Hall
presnts a portrait of the civil
rights leader that is less saint
and more flesh and blood. This
production is really for adult
audiences and does spark some
serious thoughts.
Once again on Thursday,
April 10, we will have our
third annual Fashion Show,
just in time for Easter. Marty
Keil will once again be organizing that popular event featuring Seguin businesses and
local models.
Then on Thursday, May 1 we
will be hosting our “Dining
Under the Stars” event. In
addition to a very special
menu, this dining event will
feature some very special
entertainment, Soul Stick Q,
out of San Antonio will perform. The group performed at
the Martin Luther King dinner
in January and was such a hit
with the audience and our
Mayor Don Keil, the he
worked to bring them back for
another evening of “doo wop.”
More details on this will be
coming out soon.
A number of other special
events come in the Summer
including our July 4th Parade
Viewing event and our
Summer Drama Camp for
youth which will run from
July 14 through July 26th.
Details on these events will
be released soon.
The
Texas
Theatre
Management continues to
strengthen and improve the
facility and is in the process
of raising funds for a new
quality sound system for the
venue. “This is one item we
had to postpone when we
opened. Due to limited funds
we this is something that we
knew could come later. Well
later is here. With increased
usage and requests, we need
to move on this now,” says
Steve Tschoepe. The theatre
operated with a house
portable public address system that was donated but it
was never intended for musical or dramatic presentations.
