online entry and photo submission system to determine if the artwork meets the basic
requirements to participate in this competition.
If your entry qualifies for the 2nd Round of judging you will need to deliver your entry on
the date and time above.
No refunds will be issued for “Not Accepted” entries.

Free Alameda County Fair Admission
Artists will receive one 2015 Alameda County Fair admission ticket, at time of entry delivery to the 2nd
Round of Judging.
One ticket per exhibitor, not one per entry. Tickets are good any day the Fair is open.
One free admission ticket for artists with non-accepted entries will be available for pickup at the Will Call
Booth located outside the Main (yellow) Gate entrance every day of the Fair. Photo ID required.
Please read these RULES...
ELIGIBILITY
1. Artists must be 18 years old or older and
reside in California.
2. Each person may submit a maximum of 6
entries in each division of the Fine Art
department.
3. Entries must be made, personally, by the exhibitor. Original work only. No kits, direct copies of
original work, classroom assignments or group work will be accepted.
4. Size Limits for Fine Arts (Division #204) entries: Maximum size: 46” high x 60”wide including frame
or base.
5. Art Sculpture (Division #205) exceeding 28” high, if accepted, cannot be guaranteed placement in
a display case, and may be installed on an uncovered pedestal. Sculptures may not exceed 6’ high.
6. Weight Limit for both entries Division #204 and #205 is 30 pounds.
7. Artwork must be original and completed within the last two years.
8. Artwork submitted (whether accepted or not) at any prior Alameda County Fair is not eligible for
entry and will be disqualified.
9. Exhibiter may not submit the same entry at two or more fairs that require them to be on exhibit at
the same time unless prior written approval has been obtained from both fairs.

10. Exhibitors are solely responsible for reading the competition guidelines and rules, and entering
their items in the correct Divisions/Classes. Incorrect entries may result in disqualification and may
not be exhibited.
11. Artwork that is accepted for exhibition cannot differ from the uploaded image or the entry will be
disqualified.
12. No refunds will be issued for items incorrectly entered by the exhibitor.
13. All state and local rules apply.
14. No changes of any kind are allowed after online entry deadline.
15. The Fair Association reserves the right to refuse any entry, or refuse to display any entry
considered not to be in accordance with the rules of entry or in the best interests of the Fair.

The Alameda County Fair Fine Art Exhibition is a juried exhibition. Not all entries are accepted. Fine Art
(Division 204) and Sculpture (Division 205) entries will be judged first from uploaded images viewed
online to determine if the submitted entry meets the basic requirements to participate in this
competition and the subjective standards for exhibition set by the judges. All entries will be juried by
recognized authorities in the art world.
Friday, May 29th, 2015, 6 pm – 1st Round Judging email notification of entry
acceptance/non-acceptance for delivery for the 2nd Round of Judging.
You will be sent a separate email for each of your entries whether or not they were
accepted into the exhibition judging.

Tips and Instructions on How to Enter…
Mandatory Online Entry Process for Fine Art and Sculpture. See also step-by-step
instructions on page 7.
 You will need a digital photo of your art piece in order to enter the contest.
See below, ‘Simple tips for photographing artwork for non-photographers’.
 Digital image size: For online entries, the ideal resolution in pixels is 800 x 800 (length
x width). Images that are larger than that are resampled (resized) to that size while still
maintaining the original aspect ratio. It’s fine to upload images that do not match the
‘ideal size’. The maximum storage size limit is 6 MB.
 Division / Class: See definition of divisions on page 2. An entry eligible in more than
one Division and/or Class should be entered in the Division and /or Class for which it
best qualifies. The Alameda County Fair or the judge may disqualify or transfer to the
correct Class (at his/her discretion) any entry, which is not a true representative of the
Division or Class in which it is entered. It is not, however, the responsibility of the
Alameda County Fair or a judge to transfer an entry to the correct Class or Division.
 Title: Use a short title: it may be abbreviated to accommodate the label space. If you
do not want to title your piece, you will need to enter “untitled”. If you have more
than one “untitled”, put a number after the word. For example, “untitled 1 ‘, “untitled
2”, etc.
Please choose your title carefully. The title cannot be changed later. This exact title is
what will appear on the wall next to your piece if it gets displayed in the exhibition.
 Sale Price: If art is for sale, include price or indicate “NFS” if not for sale. We do not
have POR (Price on Request) or B/O (Best Offer) as an option. Paintings and sculpture
DO sell at the Fair so, please, choose your price carefully so that you will be happy if it
sells. The Fair takes a 20% sales commission from each sale. Sale prices cannot be
changed. No changes after registration. No exceptions.
 Description: The description can be brief. Mention of medium and subject content is
ideal. The description does not go on the wall label.

HOW TO ENTER AND UPLOAD YOUR DIGITAL IMAGE- 1st Round
Really Important Entry Date: Online Entry Deadline is Wednesday, May 20th, 2015
Entry limit is 6 entries per division ~ Entry fee is $10/entry
1. Review the Fine Art Rules.
2. Entering online requires a credit card! (All cards except for American Express are
acceptable) Make sure you have a credit card ready when you start the entry
process. No entries are accepted before the entry fee has been paid.
3. Make sure the digital image of your artwork is on your computer and that you
know where it is on your computer (on desktop might be easiest).
4. First, Register/Log-in directly at http://alamed.fairmanager.com/
5. Select ‘Create Entries’ option
6. Choose the Division/Class for each entry.
7. Enter the Title, Description, and Sale Price (or NFS).
8. Complete payment of entry fees.
9. After payment, select UPLOAD MEDIA option, and then follow prompts to upload
the digital image file that matches the title/description. If you have multiple
entries, please be very careful to upload the digital images in the SAME order that
you entered the titles with prices so that the titles and descriptions match.
10. Refunds will not be issued for failure-to-upload entries.
Entry Confirmations
You will receive e-mail notification and confirmation immediately when entry fee is
received. This will be your receipt for the entry fee.

Simple tips for photographing artwork for non-photographers
These days most artwork is submitted digitally in the art world so, obviously, it’s important to have the
most realistic digital representation of your artwork for submissions. For those artists who are nonphotographers, this could necessitate hiring a professional photographer who specializes in photographing
artwork.
Our Judges will understand that the Fair has just transitioned to ONLINE ONLY submissions for Fine Art and
Sculpture and this may pose a challenge for some artists. Amateur photographic images of artwork will be
considered equally alongside professionally photographed images of artwork.
You can use any kind of digital camera, ipad or cell phone to photograph your artwork.
Choose a simple, plain, non-distracting background for behind your piece- white, grey or black is
preferable. This could be a wall or a piece of paper or fabric (without wrinkles).
Put your piece in front of the background (2 dimensional pieces could be on a wall or leaning against a
wall). Try to make sure the art is evenly lit. Types of light that could work: outside -open shade preferably;
inside-electric light or window light; or professional photographic lighting. Position the camera (or iPad or
phone) directly in front of the piece. Take a good look at the piece from the angle of the camera and move
the piece or the lights if you see lots of distracting shine or glare. Try to minimize any distracting shine or
glare. If you are photographing a square or rectangular piece (painting, drawing, etc.) try to square your
camera up to the piece so that it isn’t ‘out of square’ in the image. Take several photos, trying different
things-maybe some brighter, some darker, different camera positions and then decide which photo is the
best representation of your piece.
Acceptance for 2nd Round Judging
After the 1st Round of online judging, email notification of entry acceptance/nonacceptance will be sent out on Friday, May 29th, 2015, 6 pm. You will be sent a
separate email for each of your entries whether or not they were accepted into the

Acceptance for the 2nd Round Judging does not guarantee acceptance for the exhibition.
Artwork accepted for the 2nd round of judging must be brought to the fairgrounds, framed and/ or ready
to be displayed. Please see ‘FRAMING CHOICE and RULES’ (below) for specific rules about presentation.
All entries accepted for the 2nd Round Judging will then be judged for compliance with framing and other
rules, size limits, and quality of the entry. Judges may, at their discretion, jury out works that do not meet
their subjective artistic standards.
When you bring in your artwork, you can let staff know if you want your piece considered for the Fair
Theme award. THE 2015 FAIR THEME IS: Rock the Red, White and Blue!
Artists whose entries are judged to meet the show standards are invited to enter the
2nd Round of Judging. Artists will need to deliver their work to the fairgrounds on entry

FRAMING CHOICE and RULES:
Framing choice is one criteria considered by judges in the award judging process. A clean, professional
presentation is advised. Simple wood or black or white frames and white, not colored, mats are highly
recommended.
 Paintings may be framed or unframed according to the discretion of the artist, as long as
the edges are finished (i.e. no unfinished or frayed edges unless they are integral to the
work).
 Prints, watercolors, pastels, graphics and other fragile works must be protected with glass
or acrylic.
 Size Limits for Fine Art (Division #204), Entries: Maximum size: 46” high x 60”wide
including frame or base. It is advisable to cover the 16” by 20” and larger sized pieces with
Plexiglas rather than glass to reduce weight. For Art Sculpture (Division #205) exceeding
28” high cannot be guaranteed placement in a display case, and may be installed on an
uncovered pedestal. Sculptures may not exceed 6’ high.
 Weight Limit: 30 pounds. Provide appropriate packing for handling.
 Diptychs and triptychs are not allowed unless framed together in one frame within stated
size restrictions.
 All wall work must be wired and ready to hang with fasteners and with wire attached. Wire
should be heavy enough to support the piece and attached in a permanent way that does
not protrude. Use strap or mirror hangers. No screw eyes; no saw-toothed hangers. See
diagram on page 9. Note: NO supplies will be available to correct unacceptable framing.
 Any artwork not conforming to framing standards will not be accepted for judging.
Artwork not ready to hang adequately will be rejected at point of delivery. Any entry not
meeting framing requirements will be disqualified.

Final Judging Results
You will be notified of the final judging results by email on June 9th. You
will be sent a separate email for each of your entries whether or not they
were accepted into the exhibit. Please check spam/junk folders before
calling for your results.
If your delivered entry is judged ‘not accepted’, you will need to pick up your artwork on Saturday June
13th, 2015. Claim check or photo ID is required for pickup.

damage of any kind from any cause. Submission of any work constitutes an agreement to this
effect.

RIGHT TO REPRODUCE: The right to reproduce images of any work accepted by the Judges is
assumed by the Fair Association. This use would be ONLY for publicity and promotion of the
Alameda County Fair.
SALES:

All sales originating at the Fair must be completed in their entirety before the conclusion of the
Fair. NO EXCEPTIONS.

We DO NOT offer either POR (Price on Request), nor “Best Offer” as options.

Entrants shall be notified of a sale prior to the end of the Fair and payment mailed after the
conclusion of the Fair.

All sale funds become the property of the Fair until pieces are relinquished to the buyer.

The Alameda County Fair will retain a 20 % sales commission from each sale.

About the Judging
Exhibits are placed using the American Judging System where exhibits are ranked one against another.
Awards will be made if, in the opinion of the jury, the items entered have sufficient merit. Silver, Fair
Theme and Honorable Mention awards may be awarded in each class if judges so determine. Best of Class
award winners will compete for Best of Show (Gold) Winner.
Jury selection is final. The judges’ decisions are final and cannot be protested.
Artist names and titles of artwork in the exhibit will be posted on the Alameda County Fair’s website on
the ‘RESULTS’ page.
Awards
Each exhibitor shall be restricted to 2 cash awards per division.
Each entry is restricted to one cash prize.
Gold Award (Best of Show) is selected from Best of Class Awards.
Best of Show Award ($300) over-rides Best of Class Award ($200) –
only the higher cash award is given.
Cash awards will be mailed after conclusion of the Fair.
During the Fair, fairgoers vote for their favorite piece in each of the
Fine Art divisions. The ribbons for these Public Favorite Awards go
on the wall next to the winners during the last weekend of the fair.
Purchase Awards
The Alameda County Fair may purchase artwork from the 2015 Fine
Art Exhibit. These purchases will become part of the Alameda
County Fair’s Permanent Collection.

FINE ART JUDGES
Teresa Kalnoskas
has achieved national and international recognition for her iconic, large-scale abstract
works in oil that are action-driven and still-life inspired. Her work has been exhibited in top galleries and museums
throughout Northern California, Utah and the Northeast. Her corporate collections are throughout the United
States and in Asia.
Following studies at Kutztown University, Virginia Commonwealth University, UGA Cortona Italy, and Penland
School of Crafts, Kalnoskas leapt onto the gallery scene with her atomic-energized still-lifes that are largely inspired
by her childhood family farm and fruits of harvest.
A 30-year resident of California, Kalnoskas is currently represented by Sense Fine Art, Menlo Park and Julie Nester
Gallery, Park City.
John King
attended the University of California, Berkeley and received his
B.A. and M.A, in Painting and Drawing. While at UCB he studied with Elmer
Bischoff, David Hockney, Walter Askin, R.B. Kitaj and Roland Petersen. At Berkeley he received the Eisner Prize in
Art and on graduation taught as an associate in the Art Department and subsequently in the Peralta College system
and other institutions.
John served in the US Army and the San Francisco Police Department. Both of these experiences have influenced
his painting as a figurative painter to this day -the army because it exposed him to a wide variety of European art,
while stationed in Germany with easy access to Italy France and Austria., and the SFPD because of its exposure to
the varied life of an urban landscape and its inhabitants.
His work is in public collections in the US and Europe including The Addison Gallery of American Art. The Brooklyn
Museum, Michelin Corp, France and numerous private collections here and abroad.
John maintains a painting studio in Oakland CA.
Fred Kling
is a contemporary painter and Professor Emeritus of Art at the City College of San Francisco, where
he taught classes in painting, drawing and Plein Air painting. He holds a BFA from The California College of the Arts
and a MFA from Mills College. For 20 years he was part of the group of Oakland artists who worked in studios in the
Pardee building before it was demolished.
Fred’s work was included in the exhibition A Oakland Metaphor: Hidden Treasures- the Pardee Artists exhibiting
the work of the artists who populated the Pardee in its heyday. His work has also been exhibited at the LA County
Museum of Art, The Place of the Legion of Honor, and is in the permanent collection at the di Rosa Preserve. Fred is
a long time member of the group of artists who make up the Van Kleef Book Club.

Contest Rules:

Contest is open to age 18 or over. Artist is limited to only one art piece. Entry fee is $10.00.
Contestants must sign up online or in-person by Monday June 22nd

Entry tickets for each participant will be issued at the “Will Call” office near the YELLOW
GATE on Pleasanton Ave.

Contestants must check in at the Plaza del Arte by 11:30 a.m. Fair gates open at 11am. The artist’s
canvas, paper, board, etc. must be stamped by the art staff prior to beginning work. Art staff will
provide map of designated areas for artists to set up their work area.

Artists must bring their completed work back to the Plaza del Arte office no later than 5:00 p.m.
for judging.

Judging will take place at 5:30 p.m., and winners will be announced soon afterwards. (Artists can
take non-selected artwork home that evening.)
What to bring?

Bring your own art supplies; be ready to paint on location within the fairgrounds.

Maximum size of canvas: 36” x 36” Artwork must be affixed to a firm support board for display on
easel.


PLEIN AIR JUDGES
Mark Monsarrat is a long-time plein-air and studio painter of traditional landscapes in
oil. He paints in the tonal-colorist, Craftsman style, inspired by the 19th-century Romantics
and the early 20th-century American Impressionists. With his technical and business
background, Mark is a true Renaissance Man, with five college degrees, including a BFA in
Drawing from the California College of the Arts, an MFA in Painting from the Academy of
Art in San Francisco, and numerous plein-air workshops with noted artists over the years.
Mark paints outdoors "en plein air" and in his San Francisco studio, garnering many
awards at art shows and plein-air competitions, most recently First and Second Places in
the last two years respectively at the Marin County Fair Plein Air competition. He also
conducts his own classes, demonstrations and workshops.
Mark is represented by various galleries in Carmel, Lake Tahoe, and the S.F. Bay Area. His
work can be seen on Facebook and at www.MarkMonsarrat.com.
