March 2016 - Maysville Local Schools
A Community Update
March 2016
Message from the Superintendent
The weather has been fantastic and it looks like we will not have any snow days to
make up. Students and teachers are working very hard to prepare our students
for state wide mandated tests. We have to work together so our students have
the best opportunity for success. Please look at your district calendar for upcoming programs and events. Registrations for Preschool and Kindergarten are
happening; if you have a child that qualifies for those programs please register
them as soon as possible. Thanks for your commitment and dedication to the
Maysville Local School District.

while still in high school. Thank you

present to answer questions regarding OU policy. Maysville High School
will offer 31 courses for college credit
on their campus next school year.

College Preview
On Friday, February 26, seven College Credit
Plus teachers at Maysville High School partnered
with seven Zane State College faculty members
to give Maysville students a preview of college.
These teachers did team-teaching in the college
classes and had fun activities for students.
During lunch, students participated in activities
from various programs, including Electrical/
Electronics Engineering Technology, Sport and Fitness Management, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant, Fire Service, and
Industrial Systems Engineering Technology. Prizes were awarded during the
activities.
An assembly for all current College Credit Plus students was held at the beginning of the day to learn about the new Honors Program at Zane State College, receive copies of their Zane
State College transcripts, and learn about affordable options for continuing their education.
All students in
current college
courses were put
in a drawing for
a Kindle Fire
HD. The winner
was Kori Sidwell.

Coal is Cool!
Mrs. Kinner’s 3rd Grade Science students explored the nonrenewable resource, coal during our Earth’s Resources unit. We
had a guest speaker. Mr. Cornett come to visit us and teach us a
little about his job as a coal miner. We learned the importance of
taking care of our resources on Earth and the many uses of coal.
Mr. Cornett also brought us a sample of coal from the mine that
he works in and some of his tools and gear that he uses/wears
daily to do his duties. We appreciate Mr. Cornett and our other
Maysville family members that work hard in the mines!
Outdoor Recreation Classes
We would like to thank
Cheyenne Frank and her
father Scott for bringing in
their family pets to share
with the outdoor recreation classes. This was a
great experience.
After School Activities
After School students are brainstorming ways to brighten the day for the people at Seton Hall. They have written letters, painted pictures, made blankets
and will be growing flowers and more. The students will be going over to meet
their new friends this session.
Next session, April 4-May 5, we will be having woodworking again. Students
enjoy working with the teachers to create outdoor projects. Century National
Bank will be leading a class on budgeting. If students attend the majority of
classes they will receive a savings account with a small starter balance! Be sure
to have your student sign up for this one. We will
also have some of our old favorites such as Collectible Cards, hiking, outdoor games, service learning,
golf, Frisbee golf, bike riding, painting, garden crafts
and gardening. Sign-up sheets are available in the office. Don’t miss out on a great time! We have a field
trip planned for the end of April to Velvet Ice Cream
Mill in Utica. Also, we will be going to Rolling Plains
again on the last Wednesday of the session to have a
day of fun. We have enjoyed volleyball, dodge ball,
9 square, and much more. Thanks to Rolling Plains
United Methodist Church for hosting us each session.

O*TAGS Preschool
Spring is in the air at Preschool
Spring is in the air! We finally got to go back outside and have some much needed recess time! =) With
spring approaching, our theme really relates to this time of the year and allows the children to experience
some real-life authentic experiences. Each child has planted or will be planting flowers as well as caring for
them. They have learned all of the essential things to help them grow.
Easter was also a very fun time in Preschool. We celebrated by doing many fun Easter activities. The last
day before spring break we had an
enormous Egg Hunt. The kids had so
much fun!!! =)
When we come back from spring
break we will be starting our "Farm"
theme, and all classrooms are hatching baby chicks in their classrooms.
We will be expecting the chicks to arrive on or around April 19th.
DON’T FORGET: Preschool Registration will be held at Maysville Elementary school on April 11th, 2016
from 9:00am – 7:00pm.

The Cat in the Hat (Kylie Bell) tells the story of Horton (Caleb DeLong), an elephant who discovers a speck
of dust containing Whos (Jay Demp and Cathy Monroe), including Jojo (Cassie Harper), a Who child sent
off to a butter battling military school run by General Gengus Khan Schmitz (Gavin Goodrich) for thinking
too many "thinks." Horton's attention to the speck of dust and his "loitering" care of Mayzie LaBird's (Reagan Wasileski) egg has elicited taunting and accusations from the Sour Kangeroo (Alayna Schooley) and
the rest of the animal kingdom, except for Gertrude McFuzz, (Cheyenne Frank) who longs for his attention,
and JoJo, whose "thinks" save them all in the end!
The entire cast is as follows:
• The Cat in the Hat – Kylie Bell
• Jojo – Cassie Harper
• Horton The Elephant – Caleb DeLong
• Gertrude McFuzz – Cheyenne Frank
• Mazie Labird – Reagan Wasileski
• The Sour Kangeroo – Alayna Schooley
• Mr. Mayor – Jay Demp
• Mrs. Mayor – Cathy Monroe
• Yertle the Turtle – Cammie Bunting
• General Gengus Khan Schmitz – Gavin Goodrich
• Grinch – Miranda Reed

Marble Challenge
Recently, Mrs. Branch invited a group of her 5th grade Science students to participate in a Marble Challenge as a culminating activity
for their Force and Motion unit. The goal of the Marble Challenge was
to have students work in small groups to build an index card ramp
that would allow a marble to travel through it at the slowest speed
possible.
Each group of students worked together to design a blueprint before
they began the actual building process. The next step was for them
to use 3 X 5 inch index cards to build their ramps, which they taped
onto a large sheet of poster paper. They completed many "unofficial"
trial runs during this process to see how slow the marble was traveling
through their ramps.
The groups ended their work by completing 3 "official" time
trials and determining the average time it took the marble
to move from start to finish without stopping. The group of
Liam Wahl, Nathan Davis and Carter Parks had the slowest
time and won the challenge.
Finally, students moved the ramps to the foyer, taped them
to the windows and participated in a Gallery Walk for fourth
and fifth grade students. They demonstrated the ramps to
students and teachers and were eager to answer "Science"
questions about their group's project.
Students used their knowledge of force and motion to build
their ramps, practiced skills needed to effectively work together in small groups and were successful in creating a final product.
Have you moved? If so, please contact your child’s school with your new
address and update any other information that may have changed.
It is important we have current contact information.
