Annual Report - Special Olympics of Colorado
2013 Annual Report
Play Unified. Live Unified.
“Special Olympics allows me to just be me.”
–Mackenzie Beauvais-Nikl, Athlete
“The ‘new’ Special Olympics
offers an opportunity for
everyone. Sports is the
common ground that helps
us all understand that we
are more alike than we
are different, and that we
all have gifts and talents
to share. The experience
goes much deeper, though.
Together, we are building a
community where all of us
can feel safe and are proud
to be a part of.”
— Mindy Watrous,
President and CEO of Special Olympics

the program is life-changing.
“Every night we go around the dinner table and everyone gets to share their “Best
Part” and “Worst Part” of the day. Unfortunately Conor’s lack of full speech gives
him the inability to clearly communicate his thoughts and consequently doesn’t
get the deserved recognition during this time. But that night when we asked him
what his “Best Part” of the day was he immediately just grabbed and pointed at
his Denver Nuggets t-shirt that he was still wearing that he had received that day.
It was clear by the huge smile on his face on what the best part of his day was. He
absolutely had the time of his life and we can’t thank you enough.”
–Tim Sheahen, parent of athlete who attended the annual Denver Nuggets clinic
“At first, it was very apparent that many of the special needs athletes were
uncomfortable around the partners, and the partners weren’t too open to be
friends with the athletes. However as time went on, we saw friendships develop
across the boundaries simply through passing a basketball that were incredible.
By the final cheer on the last practice, it was very apparent that many of these
boundaries between the Rookies had been broken down and all of the kids felt
comfortable around each other. It is inspiring to see that these children will soon
be our leaders, and they will be doing it together.”
–Garret Lee, Red Shirt Rookies Volunteer
