Thank you 2014 DONORS AND VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP CARNEGIE MUSEUMS OF PITTSBURGH CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 33 Janet and Bill Hunt (center) with Jo Ellen Parker, President & CEO, Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, and Dolly Ellenberg, Vice President, Development PHOTO: JOSHUA FRANZOS 34 CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 A s we read the personal testimonies in this annual salute to Carnegie Museums donors and volunteer leaders, we can’t help but feel inspired and proud. Our supporters are an extensive, diverse community of engaged and thoughtful individuals, families, corporations, and foundations, each embracing Carnegie Museums as their museums. It’s been 120 years since Andrew Carnegie established Carnegie Institute, and it’s remarkable how his philanthropic legacy has endured for more than a century: Still today, Carnegie Museums relies on the passion and commitment of donors and volunteers to be nourished and to grow. Thanks to dedicated supporters, our museums continue to inspire and change lives, reaching 1.34 million people last year through collections, exhibitions, programming, and outreach. 1.34 MILLION PEOPLE REACHED IN 2014 Our patron-level donors and volunteer leaders infuse life and energy into the museums through their gifts of time and talent as well as through their generous contributions to the Carnegie Museums Annual Fund. Bill and Janet Hunt, featured in this special section, exemplify the dedication and philanthropy of many who are invaluable friends and longtime supporters of Carnegie Museums. 26,000 DONORS AND MEMBER HOUSHOLDS Bill and Janet have championed the museums for more than two decades. As art lovers, they’ve financially supported a number of special projects at Carnegie Museum of Art, including the museum’s popular 2012 Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World's Fairs, 1851–1939 exhibition and the upcoming Silver to Steel: The Modern Designs of Peter Muller-Munk exhibition. They have consistently and generously supported the Carnegie Museums Annual Fund, which sustains the good work of all four Carnegie Museums. Just as important, the Hunts are generous with their time and expertise. Janet is a longtime member and past president of the Museum of Art’s Women’s Committee. Bill served as a Museum of Art board member and chair, and is a Carnegie Museums life trustee and executive committee member. Last year he became chair of the Carnegie Museums board of trustees. In his new role, Bill has set a tone of optimism, collaboration, and fiscal accountability: his enthusiasm for Carnegie Museums’ future is contagious. Already he has been an inspiration to his fellow volunteer leaders and those of us fortunate enough to work closely with him. $21 MILLION IN TOTAL CONTRIBUTIONS $7 MILLION IN ANNUAL FUND AND MEMBERSHIPS Bill and Janet, thank you for the gifts of your good counsel, hard work, and generosity. You are the founders of our future! You represent the commitment and vitality of the community that supports Carnegie Museums—commitment shared by all who have given and served in the past year. On behalf of all those who benefit from your contributions, a heartfelt thanks! Jo Ellen Parker President & CEO Dolores F. Ellenberg Vice President, Development CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 35 CARNEGIE NOBLE QUARTET SOCIETY 2014 TOTAL GIVING Honoring lifetime giving of $1 million or more deep appreciation We expresslifetime Honoring giving and gratitude for the generous support ourmillion 26,000or donors ofof$1 moreand members. Largely self-educated, they worked hard, persevered, and rose from humble beginnings to great professional success. If you bought a Buick in Pittsburgh in the 1930s to the 1970s, there’s a good chance Massey was involved. Outgoing and personable, he understood cars, and he knew how to sell. In 1936, he acquired a fledgling car dealership on West Liberty Avenue and built Massey Buick into one of the largest dealerships in the country. Also like Carnegie, Massey and his wife, Doris, recognized the importance of contributing to the quality of life in the region where they lived and worked. The Georgia natives established the Massey Charitable Trust in 1968 to give back to their adopted community of southwestern Pennsylvania, and long after their passing this legacy continues to make a difference. For nearly 30 years, the trust has been making a difference as a steadfast supporter of the Carnegie Museums Annual Fund, with a focus on all-important operating support. In 2014, Carnegie Museums inducted Massey Charitable Trust into its Noble Quartet Society, which honors lifetime giving of $1 million or more. “Education is an underlying theme in our giving,” says Bob Connolly, executive director of Massey Charitable Trust. “The museums are among the region’s most important assets. The long lines of school buses in front of the museums and the number of children roaming the galleries tell us just about everything we need to know about the importance of the museums to the region’s educational systems.” The trust designates its gifts to operating support, says Bob, because, “It gives the museums flexibility to use the money where it is needed most.” CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 37 William Talbott Hillman with Lynn Zelevansky, The Henry J. Heinz II Director of Carnegie Museum of Art PHOTO: JULIE BROWN Bill has built a world-class collection over the past three decades spanning the history of the medium that will ultimately be gifted to Carnegie Museum of Art. Artist and collector William Talbott Hillman was first exposed to art within the galleries of Carnegie Museum of Art. He credits the museum with igniting his early interest in drawing and painting. His use of a 35 mm camera in high school would one day lead to his pursuit of photography within his own professional creative practice. Eventually that interest would also lead him to collect photography. A Pittsburgh native now living primarily in New York, Bill is a charter member of the Carnegie Noble Quartet Society, which honors lifetime giving of $1 million or more. With a sophisticated eye and passionate dedication both to photography and Pittsburgh, Bill has built a world-class collection over the past three decades spanning the history of the medium that will ultimately be gifted to Carnegie Museum of Art. In the early 2000s, Bill established an endowment at the museum in support of photography, which allowed for the hiring of the first curator 38 CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 of photography and the making of significant acquisitions in this area. Then in 2013, he helped put the increasingly ambitious department on the map by challenging the museum to create a truly unique and important program in the field and supporting that experimental endeavor. The result has been the Hillman Photography Initiative (HPI), a first-of-its-kind incubator for innovative thinking on the future of the photographic image. As the museum heads into the second cycle of HPI, Bill asked Dan Leers, the museum’s new curator of photography, what excites him most about the project’s potential, noting what he personally treasures most is its mandate to be forward-thinking and flexible. Dan’s response: “We can expand the conversation without any geographic restrictions. The global component of HPI can’t be overstated, it is critical. The more we break out beyond the cannon as we understand it and think more comprehensively about the art world internationally, the more productive these conversations are going to be.” Dorothy B. and G. A partnership between Carnegie Science Center, Pirates Charities, and Chevron, it’s helping young people learn how to use physics and math to find a baseball bat’s “sweet spot,” measure reaction time, and predict a ball’s trajectory. The high-energy traveling science show—the Science Center’s latest Science on the Road offering—is designed to put students ahead of the curve in considering a wide range of STEM-related (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers, sports statistician and material designers among them. “Youth education is one of our core focuses at Pirates Charities. This program is a great way for young people to be introduced to science and math concepts in a fun, relatable environment,” says Bob Nutting, chairman of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the club’s philanthropic arm, Pirates Charities. As part of the nine interactive “innings” of Major League math and physics fun, students observe the physics of baseball in slow motion, from the spin of a curveball to the deformation of a baseball contacting a bat, to learning how geometry plays a role in player improvement. Pirates Charities chose to team up with its North Shore neighbor to put today’s students in scoring position for successful careers in science. “We respect and applaud Carnegie Science Center’s ongoing commitment to STEM education,” says Bob, who previously served as a Carnegie Museums trustee and member of the Museum of Natural History board and currently volunteers his time on the Carnegie Museums investment committee. “I strongly believe Carnegie Museums is one of the most important institutions in the region,” he says. “Every day, Carnegie Science Center ignites the fire of imagination and creativity within the youth of our region.” CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 39 David B. and Rhoda J. Jacqui, at the time managing director of private equity firm TA Associates and today one of its senior advisors, and Jeff, a vice chairman of Mellon Bank Corp. who retired in 1996, would build their beloved personal art collection with the help of former Museum of Art director Richard Armstrong. They also would gain an unexpected appreciation for the work of Andy Warhol. “We knew about Warhol’s famous paintings, but we didn’t know about his other works,” Jacqui says. “Being a part of Carnegie Museums, we’ve become much more appreciative of what an incredible artist he was.” That appreciation has led the couple to become strong financial supporters of The Andy Warhol Museum, making generous contributions to its endowment through the Morby Family Charitable Foundation as well as regular personal gifts to the Carnegie Museums Annual Fund. “The Warhol is recognized throughout the world, which brings many visitors to the city,” says Jacqui, an emeritus trustee of Carnegie Museums and a Warhol board member. “It has interesting exhibitions that show the relevance of Warhol to contemporary artists today. And it has strong educational programming that promotes creativity among young people.” Jeff adds: “I think one of the nice things about The Warhol is that it shows that Pittsburgh is a city that fosters brilliance— it really is a place where there are so many brilliant, interesting people.” And plenty of cultural vitality, too. “Anyone who visits Pittsburgh today is completely surprised,” Jacqui notes, “by how beautiful it is, and how much there is to do. And I think our museums are a big part of that.” CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 41 Michael, Claire, Phoebe, and Betsy Thompson PHOTO: JIM JUDKIS “Whether you’re old or young, the Carnegie Museums are wonderful places to visit, to learn, to have fun.” – Michael Thompson Not unlike many Pittsburghers, Michael Thompson grew up exploring the wonders of Carnegie Museums. But his family’s commitment to their livelihood runs much deeper. Michael’s father, Harry, is a former docent and chair of The Fellows at Carnegie Museum of Art. His mother, Janie, a life trustee, is a member of the Museum of Art board and a host of key committees. This legacy, coupled with Michael’s own sense of responsibility, urged him to join the dedicated group of museum volunteers who champion the Annual Fund—the individual gifts committee. “I’ve always enjoyed the museums, and now they’re an invaluable part of my children’s lives,” says Michael, who manages electronic publishing at SAE International. “I see this role as my obligation to help them thrive. It’s a very personal choice.” A choice shared wholeheartedly by his wife, Betsy, a Pittsburgh transplant who raves about the quality and accessibility of the 42 CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 museums. “The gems and minerals collection rivals the Smithsonian in quality if not quantity,” notes the former geology major who also enjoys traveling with other museum patrons through the Carnegie Museums Travel Program. The couple’s two daughters, Phoebe, 17, and Claire, 15, say they’ve found something new to love about the museums at every age. This past spring, when Phoebe traveled to Bordeaux, France, as part of a three-week exchange program, she knew the perfect place to shop for her host family: The Warhol Store. “The gifts were both classy and represented Pittsburgh,” she says. Claire is drawn to The Warhol for how it’s opened up her ideas of what art can be: “fun and relevant to my life,” she says. “Carnegie Museums is part of the core of Pittsburgh,” adds Michael, “and I want people to understand, whether you’re old or young, the Carnegie Museums are wonderful places to visit, to learn, to have fun.” Walter P. and Jo Ann Beh Mr. and Mrs. J. Gast Tim Deily of Isaly’s PHOTO: JOSHUA FRANZOS “One of the things we love about supporting the Science Center is there is something for every young family.” – Tim Deily Pittsburgh families grow up enjoying Isaly’s Original Chipped Ham and Barbecue Sauce, fondly known as “ham barbecues.” While Isaly’s was founded in Ohio in the 1830s, western Pennsylvanians have long since adopted the company as their own. It’s that treasured loyalty that motivates Isaly’s to give back to the region by supporting another family favorite: Carnegie Science Center. “Generations of families support us, so we want to support them by providing healthy opportunities for young families and kids to grow and learn,” says Tim Deily, president of Isaly’s, whose products are now sold almost exclusively in grocery stores and online. “At the Science Center, you exercise your mind as well as your body.” A corporate member of Carnegie Museums since 2009, this year Isaly’s is sponsoring three visitor favorites: the pitching cage at Highmark SportsWorks®, summer camps, and Locomotion Weekend, a December event featuring a rail yard full of train displays by local hobbyists. They’ve also sponsored Omnimax films. A Pittsburgh native, Tim recalls being awed as a child during visits to the old Buhl Planetarium. Today, he regularly visits the Science Center with his wife, Amy Nelson, and their 5-year-old daughter, Vivienne. One of Vivienne’s current favorites: Bounce!, a bungee-harnessed trampoline at Highmark SportsWorks® that puts physics to work as she flips, twists, and spins. “One of the things we love about supporting the Science Center is there is something for every young family,” says Tim. “The Carnegie name means quality. The Science Center is always finding new and innovative ways to reach families, and Isaly’s is happy to support these efforts as our relationship with the Science Center continues to grow.” CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 43 Will, Iris (back), Lila, Didi, Robert, Kevin, and Ali Patterson PHOTO: JOSHUA FRANZOS “We add a donation on top of our membership to support the variety and quality of the offerings.” – Ali Patterson When their first child, Will, was just a toddler, Ali and Kevin Patterson won a family membership to Carnegie Museums at a local fundraiser. Soon after, Ali and Will became regulars in Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Discovery Room, a dedicated space for early learners, and the family has renewed their membership every year since. Today Will, now 14, is drawn to architecture at Carnegie Museum of Art, and has four siblings to share in the fun of discovery. “All of us can always find something that interests us,” says Kevin, a psychiatrist at Hillman Cancer Center. With children that range in age from 4 to 14, that’s not always an easy task. But at the four museums, says Ali, who teaches film at the University of Pittsburgh, the family has discovered “something fun and educational for every personality and age.” Robert, 9, loves roboworld™ and Highmark SportsWorks® at Carnegie Science Center. 44 CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 His sisters, Lila, 7, and Didi, 4, enjoy exploring Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems in Oakland. “I like all of it,” declares Iris, 10, listing fashion and engineering among her interests. “The wildlife, summer camp, the cafeteria, and I also really like the art.” The constantly changing exhibits are also a big draw for the family. Ali notes how the recent RACE: Are We So Different? exhibit sparked plenty of meaningful questions and conversation. As their own resources have grown over the past decade, says Ali, it’s been important for the Point Breeze couple to support the Carnegie Museums Annual Fund. “We add a donation on top of our membership to support the variety and quality of the offerings, especially in educational outreach,” she says. “We can’t imagine Pittsburgh without the Carnegie Museums.” Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Gaudio, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Stuart C. McDonough “[Mom] wanted to contribute her part to nourishing the museums and to sharing that joy with others.” – Tom Bell When Martha Bell passed away in June of 2013, she left a generous gift to her one-time home away from home, Carnegie Museums, where she and her husband had been members for three decades. “I think she was motivated by the joy that art brought to her life,” says her son Tom, who lives in New York. “She wanted to contribute her part to nourishing the museums and to sharing that joy with others.” A Pittsburgh native, Martha earned a master’s degree in social work and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a member of the decoding unit in Washington, D.C. Upon marrying Samuel Bell, like many women of her generation, Martha dedicated herself full time to raising the couple’s three sons, Samuel, John, and Tom. Once the children left home, Martha poured her time into two new adventures: traveling with John’s two oldest sons and discovering art. When in Pittsburgh, Martha spent count- less hours at Carnegie Museum of Art as an active member of the Women’s Committee and a longtime docent. “I remember vividly so many visits to new exhibitions, where Mom satisfied her voracious curiosity about new art,” Tom recalls. “She would enthusiastically ‘bone up’ on the new subject and then proudly take me on a tour to share all that she had learned.” When Samuel retired from S.H. Bell Company, the family business that John and son Samuel now lead, the couple bought a vacation home in Bald Head Island, North Carolina. John recalls how on frequent trips to and from their Fox Chapel residence, his parents would stop at art galleries. “In her later years, my mother never went to an art gallery where she didn’t acquire something,” he says. And while her artistic interests remained diverse, John notes that it was at Carnegie Museums where she became an art enthusiast for life. CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2015 45 Kent D. and Martha J.
