As we move further into the four year commemoration period it would be easy to think that we have reached ‘peak Anzac’. There would be very few Australians that have not heard about or participated in some kind of commemoration activity. In this postGallipoli centenary milieu, it is timely then to think about what we are choosing to remember and commemorate. Which Anzac stories are important to retell, and how will a new generation of Australians identify with them? Symposium key note speaker James Brown, former army officer and author of Anzac’s Long Shadow, leads the discussion about our responses to the centenary and how we might rethink our understanding of the Anzac legacy. A full program of the symposium will be available at slq.qld.gov.au/whats-on closer to the event. The APDL Connect project is a new initiative, giving designers from the Asia Pacific region an opportunity to develop and display their work in the Asia Pacific Design Library. In doing so, the project aims to document a design project from concept to completion, providing an inspiring exemplar of design process. How might design counteract the ongoing social, environmental and psychological impacts of conflict? 24 Think Outside is an annual talk series inviting local, national and international design thinkers to contemplate a ‘wicked problem’ outside their area of expertise, offering new and unexpected solutions for discussion. This year’s theme looks at Design and Conflict. At the first event in the series we ask Tristan Schultz and Rebecca Barnett from Redirective Practice and Dr Grace McQuilten from The Social Studio to consider how design might employ acts of repair before, during or after conflict. Speakers will have 15 minutes each to be as provocative and evocative as they wish, prompting thoughtful discussion within the theme of Design and Conflict: repair. This will be followed by a moderated discussion between the speakers and the audience. Join us for networking and drinks before the talk from 5.30pm.
