Queensland voices of the First World War
Until 15 Nov, 10am–5pm | SLQ | Free
More than 57,700 Queenslanders served our country in the First World War.
From the home front to the war front, explore the unique Queensland experience
of the war — before, during, and after.
Through exhibitions and events, Distant Lines connects us with the intimate and untold
stories of Queenslanders as we commemorate 100 years since the First World War.
Reflect on how one of the deadliest conflicts in our history affected Queenslanders
and shaped the state we live in today.
Part of Q ANZAC 100: Memories for a New Generation, proudly supported by the Queensland Government.

10am–5pm | Level 2 | Free
10am–5pm | Level 4 | Free
As we approach the end of the exhibition,
watch SLQ Gallery transition from war
time to peace time.
While Queensland may have been distant
from the front lines, the repercussions
of the First World War conflict were deep
and long lasting on the home front.
Be transported back to the war
front through the lives of 25 diverse
Queenslanders who served in the First
World War.
Learn about the experiences of
Queenslanders as the First World War
drew to a close. Discover untold war front
experiences through personal letters,
diaries, belongings and digital stories
against a backdrop of striking imagery.
Immerse yourself in the daily reality of
war as experienced by these ordinary yet
extraordinary people, and reflect and tell
your own story.
Left: Reading the newspaper behind the trenches,
Gallipoli, 1914–18, Marks Family Papers collection,

Trace the early stages of the war
from recruitment and conscription
campaigning to the darker side of
patriotism: racism, censorship and
propaganda. Appreciate how women
contributed as fundraisers, Red Cross
volunteers and medical professionals.
Explore the years of uncertainty and
separation, and the disenchantment
and continuing hardship for those who
made it back home.

(1916 and 1917) to discuss the age-old

Queensland memory
Distant Lines in SLQ Gallery highlights
the notion of distance during the First
World War — geographical, ideological,
and emotional — along with how lines
of communication connected loved ones
around the globe during this time.

Find your soldier
Brisbane folk music:
yesterday, today
and tomorrow
Tue 15 Sep, 6pm | John Oxley Library, level 4
Free | Bookings slq.qld.gov.au/whats-on
What is folk music? What role has it
played in Brisbane’s political, social and
cultural history, from bush bands and
Morris dancing to community choirs and
contemporary songwriting? And given
the rise of digital technologies and the
virtual audience, what might folk do in
the future?
These are just a few of the questions
addressed by the Brisbane Folk History
Project. With 50 oral history interviews,
more than 2,000 photographs, and a
welter of posters, programs, newsletters,
set lists and recordings dating back
to 1951, today’s folkies are busy
documenting and celebrating Brisbane’s
vibrant folk music community.

“History would be a wonderful thing
— if only it were true.” — Leo Tolstoy.
As we move further into the four year
commemoration period it would be
easy to think that we have reached
‘peak Anzac’. There would be very
few Australians that have not heard
about or participated in some kind of
commemoration activity. In this postGallipoli centenary milieu, it is timely
then to think about what we are choosing
to remember and commemorate.
Which Anzac stories are important to
retell, and how will a new generation
of Australians identify with them?
Symposium key note speaker James
Brown, former army officer and author
of Anzac’s Long Shadow, leads the
discussion about our responses to the
centenary and how we might rethink our
understanding of the Anzac legacy.
A full program of the symposium will be
available at slq.qld.gov.au/whats-on
closer to the event.

Japanese paper cutting
Creating rubber stamps
Thu 10 Sep, 6pm–8pm
In this workshop, Kay Watanabe will
introduce you to carving rubber stamps.
Learn how to carve soft, easy to work
rubber to create your own stamps to
embellish small artworks and stationery
items such as cards and bookmarks.
Join paper artist and jewellery designer
Mabina Alaka for a hands-on workshop
on cutting paper in the Japanese chigiri-e
and kirigami styles. The ancient art form,
chigiri-e, involves tearing and cutting

Kirigami involves cutting paper to create
a silhouette. You can use your paper
‘paintings’ and cutouts to create cards,
bookmarks and mobiles.

Watanabe for a hands-on workshop
making paper journals and notebooks.
Kay will show you how to select paper
and covers for your journal as well as
the technique that uses Japanese stab
stitches for hand-stitching the spine.
The class builds on Kay’s previous
workshop and covers a simple four hole
stitch plus the more decorative tortoise
shell pattern stitch and hemp leaf pattern
stitch. While this class builds on Kay’s
previous workshop, prior attendance
is not necessary.

APDL Connect installation
Until May 2016, open daily 10am–5pm | Asia Pacific Design Library, level 2 | Free
Create your cultural DNA and explore
how cultural influence impacts on
design by contributing to the inaugural
APDL Connect installation. Developed
by Woods Bagot designers in Beijing
and Brisbane, this interactive design
will evolve over time with your input as
you visit the APDL and map out your
connections to the Asia Pacific region.
The APDL Connect project is a new
initiative, giving designers from the Asia
Pacific region an opportunity to develop
and display their work in the Asia Pacific
Design Library. In doing so, the project
aims to document a design project from
concept to completion, providing an
inspiring exemplar of design process.

Think Outside: repair
Wed 30 Sep, 6.30pm–8pm | The Edge Auditorium | Free
Bookings slq.qld.gov.au/whats-on
Art and design
How might design intervene in points of
tension before they escalate? How might
design counteract the ongoing social,
environmental and psychological impacts
of conflict?
24
Think Outside is an annual talk series
inviting local, national and international
design thinkers to contemplate a ‘wicked
problem’ outside their area of expertise,
offering new and unexpected solutions
for discussion. This year’s theme looks
at Design and Conflict.
At the first event in the series we ask
Tristan Schultz and Rebecca Barnett
from Redirective Practice and Dr Grace
McQuilten from The Social Studio to
consider how design might employ acts
of repair before, during or after conflict.
Speakers will have 15 minutes each
to be as provocative and evocative
as they wish, prompting thoughtful
discussion within the theme of Design
and Conflict: repair. This will be followed
by a moderated discussion between
the speakers and the audience.
Join us for networking and drinks before
the talk from 5.30pm.
