excitement and it has been wonderful
to see so many of our students return
on the first day back! It is, of course, very important that all of our students return to school, so if
you see any Cairns West kids that are not attending school, please encourage them to go to school.
If they want to be “hard heads”, please contact me and I will organise a home visit to collect the kids
and bring them to school.

You will notice that there is a lot of building work going on at the school. This is as a result of all
asbestos materials being removed from A & B Blocks. Part of the building work will include a total
refurbishment of both buildings. The new work will have all the latest technology and will be
designed accordingly to ensure that the rooms are set up to meet the educational needs of our
students. I would like to thank Mr Geoff West from DET and the staff from Building Asset Services
(BAS) for working with me to make these very significant improvements to these buildings.

Attendance Focus
This term is going to be our ATTENDANCE term! Each class will be challenged to improve their overall attendance and the winning classes will be receiving a mystery prize and all students with 100%
attendance will receive our new wrist bands and can then earn the badges that clip on!! I wonder
which students will have all the badges first? Coming to school every day is the key! 178 Students
will receive their Attendance Wrist Bands next week on parade!
ASG
Everyday counts at CWSS. Students attending school every day on time is critical in setting your child
up for success in life. Next week we will be reviewing which of our students have reached 95%
attendance for the past 5 weeks of school. These students will be invited to join our Academic
Success Guarantee program. This is an agreement between students, families and school to ensure
children who are attending school regularly reach year level benchmarks. Please help us in assisting
your child’s development by sending your child to school every day. Keep an eye out for further ASG
information coming out soon and please feel free to speak to a staff member regarding this program.
Until next time, Mike

Multicultural Festival
This year 5B will be running the plant stall in the Multicultural Festival and we would like some
help from any of the green thumbs out there, if you are willing to pot up some cuttings or do
some planting for the festival. If you are not a gardener you can still help. Donations of cuttings,
potting mix, pots, and plants would be greatly appreciated. We would like to offer well
established plants this year, so I am starting early on the preparations. Any donations can be
dropped off to F Block just behind the tuckshop.
Thanks Julie Burke and 5B
Thank you for your assistance in this regard. All information is kept confidential and only disclosed to

Local families can now sign up for the
free healthy lifestyle program called
PEACH™ - Parenting, Eating and Activity
for Child Health. Registrations are now
open for a group to commence in Cairns
in term 2, 2015.
The program is fun for kids and helps
parents and carers make healthy eating
and activity a part of every-day life. It is
available to families with a child aged
between 5-11 years who is above a
healthy weight their age.
It consists of 10 group sessions that run
for 90 minutes each at Edge Hill Primary
School. The first 9 sessions are held
weekly within the school term. Ongoing
individualised family support is offered
through the second half of the program
ending with one final group session.
Some of the topics covered include
nutrition skills, relationships with food
and eating, changing family lifestyle
behaviours and making healthy eating
affordable. While the parent sessions are
taking place, children enjoy active play
with a trained child physical activity
facilitator.
The program is funded by the
Queensland government and being
delivered by the Queensland
University of Technology.

the PEACH™ program or to register
