MMS 009 MADLIB MEDICINE SHOW 9 CD
CHANNEL 85 PRESENTS NITTYVILLE (SEASON ONE) Medicine Show No. 9 Madlib Medicine Show is a CD music series consisting of experimental hip-hop, jazz fusion, electronic music, and DJ mixes spanning the genres. Originally launched as a one-per-month, year-long series, Madlib Medicine Show #9: Channel 85 presents Nittyville is the first to break the chronology. Nittyville is also perhaps the most traditional of the series, and we make no bones about it: one MC, one producer, and a rap record all about stunts, blunts and hip-hop. Frank is Detroit's Frank Nitt, protegee of the late J Dilla, formerly of Frank-n-Dank. Madlib is the Beat Konducta, Quasimoto, halfMadvillain & Jaylib, one of hip-hop's most acclaimed producer's favorite producers. As for Channel 85, it's clearly off most dials. This album’s concept TV station runs one show only, the comic-drama, reality-musical called Nittyville, featuring Frank, MED, Oh No, Madlib, and a supporting cast of extras. The album is 14 tracks including 10 rap tracks, 4 interludes, and runs 43 minutes. Marketed and promoted by Stones Throw Records Publicity by Score Press Limited edition Format: CD Cat. Showcasing a production style that is currently featured on projects by Joe Budden, Fabolous, Royce Da 5’9”, Lloyd Banks and others, Showbiz (producer of classic Hip Hop hits such as “Soul Clap” and “Sound of the Police”) provides a classic yet fresh Bronx production style while KRS-ONE takes it back to the essence of Hip Hop with lyrical contributions equal to those on classic KRS-ONE albums. Recent album reviews are calling this project a “modern classic” and “what Hip Hop has been missing.” FORMAT: CD — CATALOG NUMBER: DITC 308 — BARCODE: 6 11247 03082 0 AVAILABLE: May 3rd 2011 D-NICE CALL ME D-NICE 1. Taking over as KRS-One’s DJ after Scott La Rock’s murder in 1987, D-Nice was a relative unknown, despite having played a part in the group’s classic albums By All Means Necessary and the follow-up Edutainment. Setting out to make his name as an independent artist, he delivered Call Me D-Nice, an album that abandoned BDP’s militant political rhetoric in favor of a fun, upbeat attitude that played to his strengths: witty and boastful rhymes backed by funky, sample-based beats. The album yielded a #1 hit with the title track (along with “Crumbs On the Table”, which made the Top 20) and proved that D-Nice could do much more than just play the background. Out of print for over 20 years, D-Nice’s debut album Call Me D-Nice returns in an expanded edition housed in a 6-panel digipak featuring original and extended artwork with liner notes for the bonus cuts written by Noah Uman. Extended Audio includes 2 non-album cuts (produced by Scott La Rock) as well as 12" mixes and instrumentals previously unavailable on CD format. Also includes the 12" singles "Glory" and "The TR 808 Is Coming." FORMAT: CD • CAT NO: GET 51271 • LABEL: Get On Down • STREET DATE: May 3rd AUGUSTUS PABLO Ital Dub 1. The Big R P-Off 2. Shake Down By the time he released Ital Dub in 1975, Augustus Pablo was already a household name in Jamaica. He was fresh off the success of his album Rebel Rock Reggae, and about to enter the most prolific period of his career with legendary dub engineer King Tubby, this being their first collaboration. Recorded and mixed by Tubby at his studio, Ital Dub, produced by Tommy Cowan and Warwick Lyn, features Pablo lending his signature melodica work to originals (“Eli’s Move,” “Shake Up”) and covers from Bob Marley (“Rebel Music,” “Natty Dread”), Peter Tosh (“Funeral”) and Junior Byles (“Curly Locks,” “Irie Feelings”). Overlooked at the time of its initial release, Ital Dub has since been recognized as a worthy entry in Pablo’s stellar catalog and “one of the most innovative albums of the decade” (AllMusic.com). After producing top quality reissues from Lee “Scratch” Perry and King Tubby, Get On Down is proud to present another Jamaican dub classic, featuring a new digital audio transfer from the original analog tapes. Caroline’s Crawford’s career first began at the age of 15 on Motown Records where she recorded loads of songs but released relatively few! She re-surfaced on Philadelphia International in the early ‘70s with one brilliant single and a completely unreleased album, which stayed in the can as a result of disagreements with Gamble & Huff. An uncompromising singer, she teamed up with Hamilton Bohannon and sang background on his hits “South African Man”, “Foot Stomping’ Man” and “Summertime Groove”. Bohannon wrote, produced, arranged and directed the seven cuts. All Music Guide’s Andrew Hamilton writes: “His patented rhythmic, shuffling sound interspersed with some KEY SELLING POINTS: ballads make this an extension of his ”Summertime Groove” album which featured • First time ever on CD. • Remastered from the original Mercury Crawford’s vibrant vocals. Fabrice attends Henri IV prestigious high-school; his father, a businessman who made a fortune selling plastic flowers, and his mother, a former model from Jacques Fath, are never home – a cosy home indeed! With his Weston shoes, a slim-fitting suit by Renoma and his haircut modelled on those of Anglo-Saxons musicians appearing on French Eps, Fabrice dreams of Carnaby Street and the Sunset Strip. He is not alone: there’s his sister Stéphanie, 16, who wears a fringe, a mock Courrèges dress, a pink Shetland pullover and white boots. Stéphanie reads Salut Les Copains and Mademoiselle Age Tendre, which both fuel her passion for Françoise Hardy, Zouzou, Twiggy and the Beatles. The Groove Club is happy to present twenty-two records that we dug out as a tribute to Fabrice’s kinky faves. We imagine those magic years 1966-71 (with two inclusions from 1976 & 77) to have been as you can hear it here — truly decadent pop-sike, as beautiful as the cathedral of Evry... whether it's the arch-hippie Lolita taking us beyond the limits of pop music, singing songs which make one dream of Anicée Alvina riding her bicycle in a red dress... or whether it's sunny and stunning, or brooding and tinged with sadness. The signature swing samba is heavier than ever with a string of unforgettable tunes: from dance-floor fillers and lush jazz to hard, grooving samba funk and warped psychedelia. Together the original three piece Azymuth orchestra has made their strongest album since the seminal recordings ‘Azimuth’ and ‘Light as a Feather’. Discover why musicians as diverse as Friendly Fires and Madlib are addicted to this innovative boogie monster. Aurora The follow-up to 2008’s ‘Butterfly’ draws on the sound that was so synonymous with their work in the 1980s, mixing disco, jazz, funk, psych, and samba with their super style, playing, and improvisation. Together with producer Daniel Maunick and David Brinkworth (Harmonic 313), Azymuth recorded Aurora in Rio de Janeiro over a two week period. Opening the set is the cool, fresh title track ‘Aurora’, which features Alex’s daughter and fellow Far Out recording artist Sabrina Malheiros on vocals alongside Marcio Lott. ‘In My Treehouse’ is an extremely personal track written by Bertrami, which is influenced by his oak tree and dreams that recall his childhood playing in a tree house in his mother’s hometown. ‘Isso É Partido Alto’ encapsulates the sound of Azymuth, the focus on their signature groove, partido alto (one of the oldest traditional samba rhythms). ‘Diz No Pé’ is a samba monster combining broken drumming with syncopated samba instrumentation, written by Ivan Conti. ‘Meu Mengô’ is inspired by Alex Malheiros’ football team – Flamengo – another passion shared with his Azymuth band-mates. The Original Cult Trio Pianist, songwriter, and band leader Jose Roberto Bertrami is recognised as one of the legends of Brazilian music, remaining one of its most influential keyboardists. He is responsible for the intensity and maverick approach of Azymuth. Ivan Conti is Azymuth’s drummer and percussionist. Known as Mamao, he is a spontaneous and incredibly energetic drummer, and the real hardcore Carioca of the trio. He has collaborated on a number of major projects in recent years including 2008’s Jackson Conti ‘Sujinho’ album with Madlib. On bass is Alex Malheiros, who learnt his trade playing with the master of Brazilian swing, Ed Lincoln. Alex is respected in Brazil as one of the original groove masters. The threesome is responsible for twenty five studio albums from 1975 crate-digger favourite debut ‘Azimuth’ (Far Out re-issued in 2007); to 1979’s ‘Light as a Feather ‘(which spawned ‘Jazz Carnival’); and ‘80s classics including ‘Telecommunication’. One of the biggest jazz funk tunes of all time, ‘Jazz Carnival’, spent eight weeks in the UK Top 20 in 1980 and was a Number 1 hit around the world in the dance charts. One of very few successful bands to have kept the original line-up, in their sixth decade the cult trio continue to tour the globe wowing audiences at the finest venues and festivals. Azymuth’s previous seven recordings for Far Out have been both critically acclaimed by the press and spun heavily by global DJs. With Aurora their finest work yet for the label, the samba legends swinging ‘samba doido’ (crazy samba) is primed to win over another generation of fans. You’re in the hands of masters. They were brought to Kenya's capital in order to collaborate with local musicians as part of a project established by an organization called Art of Protest which aims to promote local Kenyan musicians and rappers. Art of Protest introduced the London faction to Joseph Nyamungu, a phenomenal player/teacher of the nyatiti (an 8-string lyre) whose scope of knowledge of the traditional music of the Luo tribe is unparalleled. The sessions with Joseph and Charles Owoko, a drummer specializing in traditional Luo rhythms developed into something unique, fresh and full of verve - a Nairobi meets London sound clash. On reconvening with Joseph and Charles on a second trip to Nairobi in May 2010, the group had now grown to a 10-piece big band, with Joseph inviting many other musicians to join the proceedings. A two-day session at the Kenya National Theatre then culminated in the forthcoming self-titled album – a collection of gloriously loose Afro grooves symbolic of the true culture clash between the Luo and London. The founder of Gorillaz and Afrika Express, Damon Albarn, even gives the project his personal blessing, popping up on organ duties on the sprightly ‘Odera Lwar’ and ‘Margaret Okudo (Dub)’. Stunning interpretations of timeless jazz classics like "I`ve Got You Under My Skin", "Blues In The Night", "Night And Day" or "One For My Baby", all songs from her sought after vinyl EPs "Jula In Jazz" and "Jula In Jazz 2" (recorded 1958 and 1959) plus further rare tracks from the first half of the 1960s, accompanied by legendary ensembles like Quartetto Lelio Luttazzi, Trio Franco Cerri or the orchestra of Giampiero Boneschi. Eleven carefully remastered tracks, still considered a vocal myth today, on a new compilation with unreleased photos from the collection of Jula plus new liner notes. Jula (pronounced "Yula") de Palma was born in Milan on April 21, 1931. Her given name is Jolanda Maria de Palma but everybody called her Jula and the nickname would also be her name as a singer. Despite her immediate success as an actress, it is her passion for singing and especially for jazz and for American songs that will lead Jula to another branch of the entertainment world. By chance, one day in 1948, while shopping for records with her mother and her sister, she meets an Italian singer, Teddy Reno. He is also the owner of a Record Company, the CGD. Jula's mother mentions to him her daughter's contralto voice, her passion for jazz and for the French new wave of songs, and her admiration for Mo. Lelio Luttazzi, a young and very talented pianist and conductor, under contract with the CGD. Almost as a joke, Teddy makes an appointment for Jula to audition with Lelio Luttazzi. The audition turns into a jam session and immediately afterwards, Teddy Reno signs the young singer with CGD. Ms.de Palma was the only Italian singer who was on the same level with the great American and French entertainers of her time, singing the same songs in the same languages, but never copying, always being an original. Her modernization of the Italian song paved the way for a new generation of Italian singers after her to be accepted internationally, and she is recognized by many for this achievement. She is happy and grateful for the spontaneous creation of a website about her by young and enthusiastic people and she says "When I punch in "Jula de Palma" and I see my name come up, thirty years after I stopped singing, on the most faraway websites of the world, I am still surprised." She shouldn't be, because Jula de Palma is still considered, today, a myth. www.juladepalma.com www.sonorama.de www.grooveattack.com Tracklist 01 Pennies From Heaven 02 Night And Day 03 I've Got You Under My Skin 04 The Nearness Of You 05 Che Cosa C'e 06 Just One Of Those Things 07 I Left My Heart In San Francisco 08 Cheek To Cheek 09 Blues In The Night 10 One For My Baby 11 Un Vecchio Dixieland 12 Everything Happens To Me 13 1000 Ragazzi Fa 14 My Man (Mon Homme) Link to b2b player: http://b2b.goodtogo.de/article/player/1562255 ARTIST : L’ORCHESTRE KANAGA DE MOPTI TITLE : KANAGA DE MOPTI LABEL : KINDRED SPIRITS FORMAT : CD CAT.NO : KS-MALI-01CD RELEASE DATE : APRIL 2011 FILE UNDER : AFRICAN / MALI A1.
