HomeAid and Stanley Martin Homes Bring
New Hope for Disabled Vet and Family
For most families living in homeless shelters, having the
chance to live in the nicest home in a neighborhood is an
experience few dare to dream. But for a disabled veteran
and his two teenage sons, that’s about to happen, as
HomeAid Northern Virginia, Builder Captain Stanley Martin
Homes and Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS)
renovated one of NVFS’ properties to such an extent that
NVFS President and CEO Mary Agee now says it’s one of
the most appealing homes in the entire neighborhood.
The circa 1975 property was, of all of NVFS’ homes, the
one most in need of repair. “This house was on its last leg,
and it simply wasn’t an environment where our clients
could live with any sense of pride. Having a home that
makes you feel good and worthy is a critical part of
restoring one’s sense of self-confidence and dignity, and
thanks to Stanley Martin Homes and their building
partners, this home will do that once again,” said Agee.

“They not only addressed many safety issues, but they also
put in the little touches that transform a house into a
home. The attention to detail—from the landscaping to
the furnishings and even wall hangings—helped make this
a house to be proud of. It will be a true gift to this family.”

Third Annual
Night at the
Ballpark Makes
Memories for
Shelter Residents
For many, summer isn’t complete without a trip to the
ballpark, and on a beautiful Friday night in August, special
memories were made for kids and adults from area shelters
who were treated to HomeAid Northern Virginia’s 3rd
Annual Night at the Ballpark. The crowd got a special treat
when Ross Ohlendorm, a major league pitcher with the
Washington Nationals, played for part of the game.
For Sarah, HomeAid’s Night at the Ballpark was the perfect setting for
a fun night out with her family.

New Hope for Disabled Vet and Family

Goals of the $134,000+ project included converting the house into a high performance home with
minimal maintenance and utility costs; integrating upgraded interior and exterior features; and
providing a finished product inside and out that provides a foundation of stability and safety.
To achieve those goals, Stanley Martin Homes and a
record-setting 46 trade partners completely
renovated the kitchen, with new appliances,
cabinets, tile backsplash and granite counters;
replaced flooring and carpeting throughout;
repainted the interior and exterior; renovated all
bathrooms with new tubs, sinks, toilets and tile;
replaced attic insulation and the roof; installed new
interior doors throughout; installed new light fixtures; installed new exterior siding and gutters;
upgraded electrical and plumbing systems to meet building code requirements; replaced the furnace
and hot water heater; installed a new security
system; re-graded the yard and installed
landscaping; replaced the driveway; and
supplied food, furniture and home accessories.
“This project was a
team effort, and each
company was a critical
sum of the whole.”
“This project was a team effort, and each
company was a critical sum of the whole,” said
Mike Cleary, vice president of production and
purchasing for Stanley Martin Homes. “Thanks
to their participation, we were able to re-model
and furnish a special home that will last for
generations, for current and future families
placed by NVFS. Every family will be proud to
live here, and it’s all possible because of our
partners’ exceptional generosity, contributions
and commitment to giving back to the
communities in which we work.”

NOVACO Welcomes New Family to
Newly Renovated Safehouse
80%
HomeAid, CarrHomes and five trade partners have completed a
$7,750 renovation project for NOVACO, an organization that for
14 years has provided transitional housing for victims of domestic
violence.
Renovations to the home included sanding and refinishing the
hardwood floors throughout and repairing and installing a new
floor in the kitchen; repainting the entire house inside and out;
removing a bathroom window for privacy and retiling the
bathroom floor to ceiling; replacing light fixtures; and installing all
new kitchen appliances.
The freshened home will be a welcome respite for a mom and
three children who have been living in a shelter for six months,
particularly as trying to find housing while fleeing abuse is nearly
impossible.
“Housing is in short supply in Fairfax County; housing for the
homeless is even more scarce; and housing for victims of domestic
violence is practically nonexistent,” said Kim Roman Corle, chair of
NOVACO’s board and interim acting executive director. “We serve
20 percent of the need in the County’s population, so having even
one home in disrepair is a serious problem—inventory is that tight.”
A warm, renovated and
redecorated home awaits a mom
and her three children, thanks to
the efforts of HomeAid Northern
Virginia, CarrHomes and five
trade partners.
“HomeAid has been a godsend in helping us continue to serve
our clients,” Roman Corle added. “Because of HomeAid and their
partners, we’re able to provide housing that not only gives our
clients a roof over their heads, but also shows them that they’re worthy of living in a nice home. It’s
an important part of their recovery, especially for those looking for a fresh start after living in an
abusive environment. On a purely practical level, HomeAid also helps close a financial gap, as so much
funding and grants have dried up. I
can honestly say I don’t know what
we’d do without HomeAid.”

CarrHomes and to all of the trade
partners for the NOVACO project!

company has been doing
philanthropic work in the community for as long as he can remember. “We
strive to give back to the community in different ways year-round, and we
always try to do a HomeAid project every year. This project—while a little
smaller than some we’ve done with HomeAid—gave us all a great feeling,
knowing we were helping out a family that needs it so much.”

George Mason U,
Wegmans Give Day
of Service to WGB
Women Giving Back (WGB), a HomeAid Northern Virginia
program that provides free clothing and accessories to
women from local shelters, saw a huge surge in its
outreach efforts
this summer,
when two major
organizations
dedicated days
of service to
WGB.
A HomeAid Northern
In June, the
Virginia Program
George Mason
University
Honors Program
brought 320
incoming
freshmen to
WGB, with the
goal of teaching the students that community outreach
needs to be part of their lives. Under an enormous tent
and the supervision of several WGB volunteers, the
students did a massive sort of donated clothing and
accessories. The Dean of the college also addressed the
students, and Kevin Stoy, director of the Honors Program,
said he would like to make a day of service at WGB a
regular part of the Honors College orientation.
“Both groups were
absolutely amazing
groups of people.”
In July, Wegmans Food Market, Inc., brought 50 interns
from their management training program to WGB. The
group finished what the students from
George Mason had started, and by day’s
end the floor of the warehouse was
finally visible! In addition to sorting, the
group also stocked The Store and made
deliveries for WGB. They also surprised
WGB volunteers with a check for
$2,956, which the interns had raised.
The George Mason University Honors Program brought 320 incoming
freshmen to take part in a day of service at Women Giving Back, where
the students sorted donated clothing and learned about what it means to
get involved.
“Both groups were absolutely amazing
groups of people,” said Terri Stagi, cofounder of WGB. “We loved them, and
it’s this type of service that really helps us
and provides team-building for
corporations.”
Both days of service were arranged by
United Way, which has said that WGB
offers one of the area’s few
opportunities that is big enough to host
such large numbers of volunteers.
For more information about how to get
your company involved, please contact
[email protected].

Interns with Wegmans’ management training program helped sort mountains of donations
for WGB and presented a check of nearly $3,000 to help WGB carry its mission forward.

Pulte Golf
Tournament Raises
$15,500 for
HomeAid
The Pulte Group’s 20th Anniversary Charity Golf Event, held on
July 26 at the Pleasant Valley Golf Club, raised a recordbreaking $31,000 for charity. The proceeds will be evenly split
between two organizations this year: HomeAid Northern
Virginia and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
A total of 23 hole sponsors and 144 golfers turned out for this
year’s tournament and enjoyed what proved to be a gorgeous,
sunny and cool day—a big improvement over the rain,
hurricanes and tornadoes that have hit the prior three years!
Thank you, Pulte Group!

Did You Know?
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA),
16.7 million children under 18 in the United States live in households
where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food
necessary for a healthy life.
Most Americans (58.5%) will spend at least one year below the poverty
line at some point between ages 25 and 75. (Hacker, J. S. (2006). The
great risk shift: The New Insecurity and the Decline of the American
Dream. New York: Oxford University Press (USA).
76% of households using SNAP (food stamps) include a child, an elderly
person, or a disabled person, and more than half of SNAP recipients still
need to turn to emergency food banks for assistance at least six months
out of the year. (Feeding America)

Kids were also able to run the bases between innings, and
everyone enjoyed concession vouchers for free food and drink,
t-shirts, and fun-filled goody bags. The night was particularly
special for a young boy named Brennan, who got to throw out
the first pitch and pick up a few tips from Ohlendorm as he
accompanied him to the pitchers mound.

The event, which served to raise awareness of homelessness in

was sponsored by BB&T, Augustine Homes, christopher
