In closing, we are proud to represent Saratoga Bridges because we truly believe our staff provides the best person-centered services to over 800 individuals and families. Given the uncertain budget crisis, we will proactively pursue ways to maintain the highest quality programs while protecting the agency’s financial security. We will continue to ask for your support and advocacy as it is vital that our elected officials hear our concerns. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to our staff, families, Board Members, volunteers, donors and the community. It is due to your tireless efforts, participation and financial support that Saratoga Bridges is the premier organization for people with disabilities and their families in Saratoga County! Patricia Poklemba President, Board of Directors Valerie Muratori Executive Director Leadership Institute Our Leadership Development Program continued in 2010 by identifying and training staff members to become future principals of the organization. The three training tiers consist of: Leadership Institute Candidates are individuals who have demonstrated a potential for increased responsibility in the areas of administrative and executive functions. Leadership Institute Supervisory Candidates are staff members who receive managerial and supervisory training based on their current job duties and their desire for growth. Mentor Series focuses on skill development for new employees to effectively interact and support the people we serve while learning new skills that improve their individual expertise. Six staff members have been in the combined Class I and Class II. They have been exposed to every department in the agency to better understand how each operates. Our goal for the Leadership Institute is to develop areas of leadership and effective supervisory strategies while ensuring that Saratoga Bridges fosters long-range growth and stability. Featured photographs are from Wilton Day Hab Photo Club Family Support Services One of our more innovative programs is Family Support Services. 240 families who have children or family members with developmental disabilities living at home are provided with numerous support systems that assist them with the many challenges they face. In-home respite and community habilitation allow the family much needed relief and encourage community integration. Sibling support groups, recreational and social clubs encourage personal growth, friendly relationships and quality interaction. Guardianship, community outreach and reimbursement also fall under the umbrella of Family Support Services. Business Partnerships Residential Opportunities In 1994 Saratoga Bridges opened the first accessible communitybased home in the county for people with developmental disabilities. Since then, our Residential Program has grown to 18 community-based homes which promote independence by offering housemates opportunities to live, work, educate, recreate and socialize within their communities. Our homes are in secure, safe environments and foster close friendships and fond memories. The goal of the agency is to provide all interested individuals a communitybased home in Saratoga County so they can have a full, active life. Positive Approaches Committee For the past 3 years a group of staff members has served on a Positive Approaches Committee. Its mission is to utilize a person-centered proactive philosophy based on caring and respectful supports. One of the committee member’s goals is to work with staff in the various programs in developing environments that provide meaningful activities to enhance self-esteem, empowerment and quality of life. By making a commitment to employ this proactive philosophy, we hope to increase growth, development and confidence, diversify community activities, promote learning and skill acquisition and increase productivity of staff and individuals. In 2010, we saw a 36% decrease in the level of hands on supports written into care plans and a 34% decrease in the overall usage of any type of hands on supports. Our goal is to continue to reduce incidents and accidents, allegations of abuse and neglect, eliminate physical intervention, decrease boredom and control issues and reduce Worker’s Compensation claims. Ultimately, the committee wants to continue transitioning from a philosophical commitment to day-to-day application where all staff is invested in applying these techniques that manifest in daily programming, personal goals, classroom activities and community involvement. Jeff’s wife Crystal Dea Moore, an Associate Professor in the Anthropology, Sociology, and Social Work Department at Skidmore, formulated the idea of bringing individuals to Skidmore to help social work students develop communication skills with diverse populations while raising disability awareness on campus. Professor Moore created ‘Bridges to Skidmore College’ as a modified college experience with Skidmore faculty delivering 30 minute presentations followed by small discussion groups. This program encourages higher-level thinking and stretches cognitive capacities. It mirrors our philosophy of supporting individuals to reach their greatest potential by providing innovative learning opportunities. Students are altering preconceived stereotypes and are exposed to the human services field. Skidmore faculty has been energized by sharing their knowledge. Likewise, the college fulfills civic engagement. Many friendships have been formed and other collaborative initiatives are being developed. ASPIRe NY In September, we developed an agreement to provide oversight and billing for Medicaid Waiver eligible individuals who receive respite through ASPIRe NY. This is a community based recreation and activity group for teens and young adults with Asperger’s Syndrome, High Functioning Autism and other disorders of social relatedness. Participants enjoy biking, swimming, picnics, snow tubing, skiing, boat rides, rodeos, miniature golf, corn mazes, bowling, parties, board games, movies, shopping and dining out. They learn safety awareness, self defense, independent skill building and explore vocational choices. High School Seniors without disabilities act as peer mentors to demonstrate age-appropriate, socially acceptable behavior. Employment Readiness In 2010 we began providing employment readiness services to high school and middle school students in the Saratoga Springs School District. We will continue offering the same program at the Burnt Hills School District. 17 students were involved in both school and community based internships that will prepare them for competitive employment after graduation. Enriching Lives everyday… Theirs and yours! 10 From the Foundation Board President Chad Beatty 2010 was a financially turbulent year for many local, regional and national non-profit organizations. Fortunately for Saratoga Bridges, we had another successful fundraising season, exceeding our budget projections, due to our very generous sponsors, donors, guests, volunteers and community. Businesses and individuals continue to contribute their resources, support and time because they believe in our mission. These funds are especially important as they help subsidize the costs of programs and services that are not financially supported by state or federal sources. We sincerely value their involvement and greatly appreciate these relationships. We held 8 fundraising and special events that raised an amazing $139,300 (net) for the Foundation. With regard to sponsorship, we generated a total of $77,125 – $33,500 for season sponsorship and $43,625 specific to an event. The following gave us an opportunity to raise much needed funds while increasing awareness of our services and programs: 2010 Masters Golf Tournament Raffle – $9,000 Jacob & Anthony’s American Grille Grand Opening – $6,800 7th Annual J. Michael Fitzgibbons Golf Classic – $13,000 Crush & Cask Wine & Spirits – $300 “Get Your Motor Running” Gala – $70,000 21st Annual ‘Travers Day at the Races’ – $20,000 1st Annual All Car & Truck Show – $2,200 10th Annual Great Pumpkin Challenge – $18,000 Also, we had two successful campaigns in 2010 – raising $6,700 for capital improvements in our residential program and $13,035 for family support. Given the economic situation, we had a very positive year securing grants. We received $24,500 in Legislative Member grants from Senator Roy McDonald and Senator Hugh Farley, $47,637 from the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust for computers and training and $9,750 in private grants for a variety of other purposes. We are grateful to our Foundation and Honorary Advisory Board as they serve as a link between Saratoga Bridges and area professional and business communities. They help explain our financial and volunteer needs, aide in identifying and receiving gifts, provide advice, increase our visibility and project a positive reputation. I personally would like to thank the Board Members, donors, supporters, families and Saratoga Bridges’ exemplary employees. By working as a team, we will continue to enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families who rely on us to provide the highest quality services and programs in Saratoga County. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the individuals, businesses and organizations that supported us throughout the year. Their donations helped enrich the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families. If your name was inadvertently omitted, we apologize and please let us know for future listings. Non-Profit Org. U.S. Postage PAID Saratoga Springs, NY Permit No. 86 16 Saratoga Bridges Boulevard Ballston Spa, NY 12020 The premier community resource for people with disabilities and their families. Join us on Facebook www.facebook.com/saratogabridges “Why I Give” is a feature that highlights an extraordinary supporter of Saratoga Bridges. In this issue, we hear from Marj Shaw. When and how did your relationship with Saratoga Bridges begin? My son Timmy was a special ed student at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf in Buffalo and we needed summer activities for him to attend locally in the late 1970’s. I first learned about the Saratoga ARC when we heard that Helen Hogan, the Executive Director at the time, had developed a summer recreation program for special ed students. When Tim graduated in 1983 he began working in the workshop at the former Empire Market located on Milton Avenue in Ballston Spa. Timmy was proud to earn a paycheck and especially enjoyed sewing hospital gowns. My husband Bill and I became friendly with other parents including Board Members Lois Bydark and Dallas Boyle. Also, Bill and Don Whitman (husband of longtime Board Member Ginger) were both Fire Chief in their towns. What moved you to start giving? I felt that our family could not always give financially but that we had other ways of contributing. When asked if I would be interested in being on the Board of Directors, I gladly accepted. Since I retired from my full time position at Saratoga Hospital Lab in 1995, I have a more flexible schedule and more time to volunteer. In what ways do you contribute to Saratoga Bridges? (volunteer, event support, membership) I have been the Vice President as well as the Secretary of the Board of Directors for many years. Living close by allows me to be easily accessible to the agency. I am the Chair of their Guardianship Committee and gladly help to volunteer serving refreshments to the runners at the Great Pumpkin Challenge and try to recruit others. My husband is on the agency’s Safety Committee where his experience and knowledge of fire and safety issues are being utilized. Every year when the agency embarks on their Membership Campaign, I sign up my 5 children and encourage others to join as members. People need to realize that the more members Saratoga Bridges secures, the more voting power we have on NYSARC’s Board of Governors. What do you get out of supporting Saratoga Bridges? When the agency is recognized for the tremendous job they do in the community, I feel a sense of pride that I am a part of it. More importantly, Timmy passed away in 1987 and I feel that maintaining a connection to Saratoga Bridges ensures that the services he received will continue and expand to meet the present and future needs. What would you say to someone who might be interested in supporting the agency? If you give your time, energy and financial resources – YOU in turn will be rewarded! How would you encourage others to give their time and resources? Become a member first. Then volunteer your time on committees or at fundraising events. Through these experiences, you will understand the importance the agency plays in the community and the state for people with developmental disabilities and their families. WHY I GIVE Marj Shaw
