Good morning Adam, In the longterm campaign to protect children from abuse, August 2015 may
very well be a month to remember. Who would have thought that during the
hot, lazy days of summer we'd be confronted with headlines relating to
Subway spokesman Jared Fogle pleading guilty to charges of child
pornography and crossing state lines to have sex with children? Or Baltimore
socialite and former Ravens cheerleader Molly Shattuck being sentenced to
48 weekends as part of her guilty plea relating to seduction and sex acts with
a minor? August 2015

BacktoSchool Safety Tips
Backtoschool, sadly, has become more than just buying supplies or feverishly
completing summer reading lists. It's also about reminding our children and
United Way
the youthserving organizations that watch them that we are concerned
Darkness to Light
about safety. In addition to the classic 3 "R's," it's an annual reminder about
another 3 "R's" that relate to child protection: Recognize, Respond, and Report

In discussing these highprofile national cases with colleagues, friends,
advocates, and leaders, there seems to be a new level of scrutiny and public
demand for action. Perhaps this new level of concern may manifest itself best
this Sunday, August 30th at 10pm when TLC network airs Breaking the
Silence, a documentary made in conjunction with our partner Darkness to
Light. Breaking the Silence will air commercialfree and shine a light on the
challenging journey faced by those affected by child sexual abuse, including
vital information on where people can turn to help.
We're planning on watching Sunday, and we'll be live tweeting during the
show if you want to join the discussion, ask a question, or share your
thoughts. Follow along and tweet to us at @ChildAbuseCentr with your
questions. You can also send an email to [email protected]. After you've watched the episode, BCAC will be available to answer questions,
provide resources, and invite you to participate in a Darkness to Light training.
View the September training schedule below. I'm hopeful that Sunday night
marks the next step in the ongoing dialogue that produces effective measures
to ultimately keep many more children safe.
Share your thoughts with me about the TLC episode after it airs and as
always,
