2012 Volume 3 fall Harvesting the Spirit sip, savor and support Lambs Farm inside: page 2: Letter from the President and CEO page 2: “The Great Stone Flood” Lambs Farm’s 2012 annual benefit welcomed guests to the magnificent Winter Garden at the Chicago Public Library Harold Washington Library Center. Some 300 guests were treated to delectable dining, great musical entertainment, and a host of ways to support Lambs Farm. Chef Jimmy Bannos included culinary creations from two of his restaurants, The Purple Pig and Heaven on Seven. And, Jimmy wasn’t the only special guest on hand at this year’s benefit - Mr. Cub Ernie Banks also joined in the celebration. The evening started with a tasty selection page 5: of hors d’oeuvres Foursomes beat the followed by offerings heat at annual golf day from three different As part of the food stations program, Lambs paired with either Farm honored craft beer from Jeffrey Tomaszek Chicago’s Jeff Tomaszek, Living Legacy Award with the 2012 Living Revolution Helping people with recipient, is joined by staff members Legacy Award developmental disabilities Brewery Vicky Raier and Kelly Czyzowicz. lead productive, happy lives for embodying or one and connecting with the the vision of our Co-Founders that, of two fine wines. human spirit in us all. given the opportunity, people with One special station, developmental disabilities could become hosted by Celebrity www.lambsfarm.org our mission: (Continued on page 3) “The Great Stone Flood” Friday, July 6, will go down in the history of Lambs Farm as the day of the Great Stone Apartments Flood, when a sprinkler burst in the attic and water began flooding hallways and apartments, setting off alarms. Residents immediately evacuated the building as the Fire Department arrived. The Facility Management staff quickly assessed the damage (which was significant), our insurance company was called, and restoration experts were on the scene within a few hours to dry out the building. The Residential Department took charge of the residents’ needs, and plans were made for them to ”camp out” in the gym for the weekend until it could be determined how long it would take to restore the building. It was estimated that it would take at least two weeks to return Stone Apartments to its pre-flood condition. Arrangements were made for the residents to stay at a local hotel, for transportation routes to be adjusted, and for the Magnolia Cafe & Bakery to provide dinners and packed lunches for those who would be temporarily “homeless.” While restoration work was being completed, Residential staff cleaned apartments, disposed of food, and removed/ cleaned linens. Our Agency Disaster Plan was put to the test, and everything worked out fine. Schedules were maintained and everyone moved back on July 22. To commemorate their once-ina-lifetime experience, each Stone Apartments resident received a t-shirt proclaiming “I survived the Great Stone Apartments Flood of 2012.” 2 From the President and CEO’s desk... In 2011, as part of our 50th Anniversary celebration, we established the Living Legacy Award recognizing Participants who embody the vision of our Co-Founders. Among the many things our CoFounders believed possible for people with developmental disabilities was that they could, given the opportunity, become contributing members of society. The remarkable men and women of Lambs Farm work diligently every day just to be the best they can be; and, it is our responsibility to provide them with the programming that will give them every opportunity to flourish. Over the years, many have learned to create opportunities for themselves. This year’s recipient of the Living Legacy Award has done just that. Jeffrey Tomaszek has been at Lambs Farm since 1981, lives in one of our community homes, and works at the U.S. Navy Lodge. He is actively involved in our Recreation program, participates in a variety of sports, serves as Assistant Coach for one of our two basketball teams, and attends classes offered by our Quest Enrichment Program. He was a member of the cast of last year’s Participant Theatre production of Annie. Jeff’s days are already full, but he always takes the time to give something back. He has been very active in his Church for many years, assisting anywhere he can, and serving as Captain of the Hospitality Committee. In the early 1980’s, he volunteered with the Lake County PADS Program, serving meals to the homeless, setting up cots for those who spent the night, helping make the lunches they would take with them the next day. His most enduring volunteer passion, however, finds him every Wednesday evening at Winchester House, a long-term care facility owned and operated by Lake County. There, he helps transport residents to the community room, sets up games, crafts or other activities, and encourages residents to participate. Over the years, he has made many friends there. He never forgets to bring some small gift for a resident’s birthday, and always makes it a point to ask about their families and other matters important to them. In 2008, Winchester House honored him with a plaque recognizing his 25 years of service as a volunteer. His remarkable devotion to their residents now spans nearly 30 years. By anyone’s standards, Jeff far exceeds the personification of a contributing member of society – a Living Legacy to the vision of our CoFounders. For the men and women of Lambs Farm, the pursuit of a full life embodies a celebration of who they are, a sincere compassion for others, and the continuous desire to be treated with the respect and dignity they so richly deserve. Your support has and will continue to assist us in assuring every possible opportunity for our Participants to broaden their horizons, explore new interests, and continue to grow. It is an investment in the quality of their lives that could, as demonstrated by Jeff, reap benefits for many. Sincerely, Dianne M. Yaconetti President and CEO Consider a year-end gift (continued from cover) contributing members of society. Jeff’s impressive history of volunteerism includes the Lake County PADS Program, service to his church, and Winchester House, a local nursing home where he has assisted residents to participate in activities every Wednesday evening for 30 years. To commemorate the receipt of the Award, Jeff received a crystal paperweight engraved with his name, and thanked everyone for the honor. Throughout the evening, guests participated in our silent and live auctions, tried their luck at the “Buy-a-Cork” game for a chance to win one of numerous bottles of wine with values up to $250, and danced the night away to the music of The Nightshift Band, a Dan Hayes ensemble. The event also featured a paddle raiser to help fund our new Fine Arts Program, much of which is not eligible for State funding. The program provides opportunities for Participants to express themselves through various forms of art including music, drama, dance, painting/drawing and more as it represents yet another Although we are in the midst of autumn, the holiday season will soon be upon us. Special Olympics round up – Banquet honors athletes Every year Lambs Farm recognizes the tireless efforts of our athletes during the Karen Buron Sports Awards sponsored by the Johnson-Larson Fund. As our athletes entered the gym with their guests, they noticed the gym was transformed into a sea of green and white and photos of practices and competitions were displayed. They also viewed several videos and montages highlighting their efforts, accomplishments, and the sheer fun of competing with friends. After a delicious dinner made by the Magnolia Cafe & Bakery of Lambs Farm, awards were given to each person for the number of sports in which they competed. Volunteers were also recognized for their service. During the evening, the Recreation Department staff unveiled a banner commemorating the 2011 Floor Hockey State Championship.
