Outside The Lines
Open Studio (5th through 8th Grades)
For highly motivated artists who want to
work on their own, self-selected pieces
at their own pace. Each class begins
with a quick sketchbook activity.
Students choose an artist to learn about
and emulate, then create their own,
individual masterpieces. We all learn
about the artists chosen and encourage
each other in our work. The class operates on a punchcard system to
accommodate older kids' busy schedules. Need to miss a
class or two? No problem!
Open Studio students enjoy many perks, like set-up
parties for exhibits and a special gallery in the end of year
art show. Visits from local artists and field trips are
planned too!

DUCKPIN BOWLING LEAGUE. Our kids have done
this now many years and the league is made up of
terrific kids, great coaches and we all have a lot of fun. Come on out! No skill needed and any children with
special needs are always welcome and encouraged to
participate. We meet at Victory Lanes in Portsmouth. The Norfolk team meets at 3:30 pm every Sunday.

The WGCL Board recognizes that most people think of a
membership year starting January 1st. Due to our Bylaws
the civic league membership year starts July 1st. This year
we kicked off the membership sign up with a wonderful
celebration at OpSail in June and we have been working
hard to promote the benefits of joining and supporting the
WGCL all summer. Your support has generated 336 civic
league members for the 2012-2013 membership year. THANK YOU!!
We welcome anyone that would like to support the WGCL
by joining (via the website www.westghent.net), but the
"Membership Campaign" is officially ended for this year. The Social Director George Pegram is working on a couple
of WGCL events that will be available for only our current
civic league members, so watch the newsletters and emails
to learn more about opportunities to enjoy your neighbors
socially.

St. Andrew’s Flower Festival and Bazaar, Nov. 2-4
A West Ghent tradition celebrates its 20th year! Marking the Feast of All
Saints with artful arrangements of fresh cut flowers. The St. Andrew’s
Flower Festival features a Friday evening gala and silent auction (ticketed
event); Saturday bazaar (baked goods, home décor, jewelry, Christmas
greenery orders), luncheon, church tours and special music; and a Sunday
All Saints Day Eucharist, organ concert and Evensong service. St.
Andrew’s Episcopal Church is located at 1009 W. Princess Anne Road.

Key Tips to Reinforce With Your
Children
Go over the best route to school.
Know the safest place to cross the
street when walking to school.
Know who the safety patrol/crossing
guards are and what they do to help
children.
Know where to walk if there is no
sidewalk.
Car break larcenies can occur anywhere. They primarily occur in places
where there is a large concentration of vehicles. This includes parking
garages, shopping facilities, churches, sporting/recreation events, and
restaurants. They can also occur right in your own neighborhood.
Here are some tips which will hopefully keep you from being a victim!
• The best advice, do not leave anything of value in your vehicle in plain
sight that you do not want taken.
• Always lock your doors even if you plan to be away from your vehicle
for a short time. Example: running in to pay for gas.
• Park in well lit areas.
• When shopping, always make sure to place purchases in the trunk and
out of sight before going to the next shopping area to park.
• Try to maintain a “clutter free” vehicle.
• Remove GPS systems from view when leaving vehicle.
• Consider replacing standard license plate screws with theft deterrent
screws available at auto parts stores.
