California Head Coach
Rich Feller
Head Coach
11th Year at Cal (25th Overall)
Rich Feller, in his 11th season with the
Golden Bears, is undoubtedly the most
successful women’s volleyball coach in
California history. Since he first stepped
on campus in 1999, Feller has been able
to craft the Bears into a Pac-10 contender
and a national powerhouse. The facts speak
for themselves—a school-record seven
consecutive postseason appearances, five
20-win seasons in the past seven years,
four NCAA round of 16 appearances, five
different All-America selections and an
appearance in the 2007 NCAA semifinals.
Under Feller’s leadership, the Bears have
not only made the NCAA tournament seven
straight times, they have won seven consecutive NCAA first-round matches and have
advanced to the regional final or beyond in
the past two seasons.
Feller’s achievements on the court have
not gone unnoticed as he was honored as
Volleyball Magazine’s 2007 National Coach
of the Year. Since leading Cal to its first NCAA
appearance in 13 years in 2002, Feller has
firmly established the Bears as a top-tier
team in the toughest volleyball conference
in the nation—the Pac-10.
Last season, he led Cal to its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA regional
final where the Bears fell in a hard-fought
three-set match to eventual champion Penn
State. Feller’s 2008 squad was one of the
most successful in program history. The
Bears not only posted the best record in
school history (26-7, 13-5 Pac-10) but set
new school records for consecutive sets
won (29), consecutive home matches won
(16), best start to open a season (18-1)
and best start to open Pac-10 play (8-0).
Cal also posted a school-record for hitting
percentage (.287) with 1,726 kills on 3,909
attacks (605 errors) and defeated each of
2
the Pac-10 teams at least once in the same
season for the first time in school history.

Before arriving at Berkeley, Feller was
an assistant coach for the United States
Women’s National Volleyball Team from
1997-98. Prior to his stint with team USA,
he was a highly successful head coach
at Colorado State. In his 14 years directing the Rams, Feller compiled a 299-167
(.642) record with eight NCAA tournament
appearances, two conference titles, 12 top25 final rankings and several All-America,
all-conference and all-academic athletes.

“The opportunity to coach at Cal and to
have the challenge of competing in the Pac10 Conference was a dream come true,”
said Feller. “Any coach who is involved in
college volleyball would relish the chance
to coach in the Pac-10 and to come to Cal.
Working at Cal is one of the best jobs in
the nation.”
Feller, 58, earned his bachelor’s degree
in recreation administration from San Diego
State in 1973 and currently lives in the

Chris Bigelow
Assistant Coach
11th year at Cal
A key component and the veteran of the
Cal volleyball coaching staff is 11th-year assistant and chief recruiting coordinator Chris
Bigelow. A former assistant at Wisconsin and
Texas, Bigelow was hired by Rich Feller at
Cal in January of 1999. She has since been
instrumental in securing recruiting classes
ranked among the top 10 in the nation for
the Golden Bears, including a No. 5 ranking
in 2005 and a school-best No. 3 ranking by
PrepVolleyball.com in 2006.
“To recruits around the country, Chris
Bigelow is the voice of Cal volleyball, and to
club and college coaches, she is one of the
top recruiters in the nation,” said Feller. “No
one works harder than Chris. Besides being
a great recruiter, she is also an outstanding
training coach with a special interest in video
tape analysis.”
Bigelow built an impressive array of
coaching credentials before arriving at Cal.
She was an assistant coach for Bill Neville
at Montana State from 1978-81, before
taking over as head coach of the Bobcats
from 1981-83. Bigelow then became an
assistant to current USC volleyball coach
Mick Haley at Texas from 1984-91, helping
lead the Longhorns to seven conference
championships, three NCAA semifinal appearances and one national championship
in 1988.
From 1991-93, Bigelow worked as a
volleyball TV color commentator for the
Southwest Conference and University of
Texas radio.
In 1993-94, Bigelow coached St. Stephens
Episcopal High School in Austin, Texas,
to a 30-3 season. She then accepted an
offer to become John Cook’s assistant
coach at Wisconsin, helping the Badgers
to three NCAA tournament appearances,
one NCAA round of 16 finish, two NCAA
4
quarterfinal appearances and one Big Ten
co-championship from 1995-98.
Bigelow was a three-sport athlete at
Eastern Washington and a member of the
USA Volleyball training squad from 1973-74.
She graduated from Eastern Washington in
1974 with a bachelor’s degree in physical
education. Bigelow received her master’s
degree from Montana State in physical
education in 1980.

Matt McShane
Assistant Coach
Fifth year at Cal
Matt McShane joined the Cal volleyball
staff on Feb. 2, 2005, and made an immediate impact as he helped the Golden Bears
achieve a school-record fourth consecutive
NCAA postseason appearance. McShane
and his fellow Bear coaches then took it a
step further in 2006 as Cal advanced to an
NCAA regional for only the second time in
school history. His offensive and defensive
schemes have combined to give Cal the
edge over some of college volleyball’s most
long-standing power programs.
The veteran coach arrived in Berkeley
after spending four years as an assistant
coach at the University of Utah. In 2004, the
Utes went 24-7 overall and 13-1 in league
action and captured a share of their first-ever
Mountain West Conference title.
“I am very pleased to have Matt McShane
as part of our staff,” said Rich Feller. “Matt
is known around the country as one of the
top training coaches in college volleyball.
He has years of experience in high-level
volleyball; collegiate and international. Matt
and I have known each other for years and
spent 15 months together working as assistant coaches for USA National team in
1997 and 1998.”
Before joining the Utah staff, McShane
was an associate head coach at the University of New Mexico from 1987-00. In 13
years in Albuquerque, he helped guide the
Lobos to a 189-127 record, two conference
championships and six trips to the NCAA
tournament.
In the summer of 2007, McShane was an
assistant coach for USA Volleyball’s National
A2 team, coaching former Cal standout
Angie Pressey. During the summer of 2002,
he also served as the head coach for the
USA National A2 Team. In the summer of
2001, he was the head coach for the Intermountain Volleyball Association (IVA) High
Performance Team that toured Europe.
In 1996, McShane was named an assistant coach of the USA Women’s National
team at the Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs, Colo. While with the
U.S. National team, McShane designed and
ran practice sessions, did video analysis
of Team USA and other major teams in the
world, and prepared scouting reports on
U.S. opponents.
McShane’s coaching background also
includes assisting current USA Women’s
National Indoor Volleyball team coach
“Jenny” Lang Ping with the Yaohan International Volleyball Team in 1996. The team
was comprised of the best American and
Russian players who competed against the
Chinese and Cuban National teams in cities
throughout China.
Additionally, McShane served as an assistant coach at Brigham Young University
from 1980-82. He is a member of the USAV
Coaches Accreditation Program Cadre (CAP
Level III), and each year, he runs numerous
clinics throughout the U.S., teaching other
college, high school and junior coaches the
fundamentals of volleyball.
As an undergraduate at UC Santa Barbara, McShane played on the only intercollegiate team to win the USAV Open National
Championship. The UCSB teams finished
second in the NCAA Championships in 1974
and ‘75, and finished third in the NCAA Regional Championships in 1976. He was an
All-American for the Gauchos in 1974.
McShane earned his bachelor’s degree
from UC Santa Barbara in 1977 and his
master’s degree from BYU in 1982. While
at BYU, he played on the men’s club team
that finished third at the USAV Open National
Championship in 1981.
