Dear Chapter Friends,
Happy New Year! What a joy to usher in a New Year after an exciting 2015 for our Charlotte Chapter!
Our upcoming January Social at THE CYPRESS OF CHARLOTTE promises to be a wonderful
opportunity for you to get caught up with colleagues and friends after the busy holidays. Shirley &
Bob Ivey have coordinated a wonderful evening, and I hope everyone will make an effort to attend!
Please keep in mind that your reservation and payment is due in advance. Details are on the front
page.
With this New Year also comes several changes in our chapter leadership. Upon request from the
Executive Board, Dr. Gay Pappin has agreed to serve as our chapter’s Interim Treasurer for the
remainder of this program year. Many of you will recall Dr. Pappin’s tremendous leadership as our
chapter dean several years ago. She brings skillful organization, wisdom and dedication to this
responsibility, and I am grateful for her willingness to serve in this capacity.
Finally, please submit information for recitals, programs, and worship opportunities for inclusion in
our chapter newsletter each month. Chapter members want to support the great things happening in
the community. The newsletter is a wonderful resource to let members know about your offerings!

WORKSHOP OFFERINGS
Addressing Common Music Copyright Issues: Rob Monath will lead a session on church
copyright issues. For any church musician it is essential to understand and sensibly address music
copyright issues. This session will also cover recent issues and developments in the ever-changing
landscape of church music and music publishing.
Trends in Worship Music: Sally Ann Morris will present a workshop on recent trends in worship
music representing both congregational and service choir components.
What’s New for Sunday Morning?: Josh Dumbleton will present a workshop of organ music
that has been published in the last couple of years that would make wonderful additions to your
music library and the worship life of your congregation. The session will include literature of easy
to medium difficulty, for small to medium-sized organs, for general, special, and specific occasions
and appropriate for all denominations.
Quick, play something! A workshop in beginning improvisation techniques: Andrew Scanlon
will present a few practical techniques, exercises, and directions that will help equip organists to
improvise immediately.

The Director/Organist will work closely with the Rector to further develop our ministry of music. This includes longterm music planning and preparation (Hymns, Anthems, Psalm arrangement, liturgical settings), rehearsing and
cultivating the adult choir 10:00-10:45 on Sunday mornings, and Wednesday nights 7:30 to 9:00 PM, playing both the
9 am, and the 11am Choral Eucharist, and promoting congregational singing and engagement. He/She must be here
for Holy Days (Christmas Eve, Holy Week and Easter), and has first refusal for weddings and funerals. He/She will
also participate in quarterly Worship Committee meetings.
The Organ is a Goulding & Wood, Inc., Opus 11 (1987), with 42 ranks, and 2,333 pipes. The Position is currently
half-time, with the potential to grow as the congregation grows. Base Salary $27,500. Work 19 hours per week. There

Hawthorne Lane UMC near Uptown Charlotte is a vibrant and growing congregation looking for a part time organist.
We have one Sunday morning worship service at 11:00 a.m. with a blend of ancient and new worship forms. We are
looking for an organist well versed in excellent organ literature to lead us in the traditional/classical art as well as
capable of bringing life to the hymns with arrangements, modulations, etc. Rehearsal with choir only as needed when
doing big works such as Rutter, Bach, Handel.
Organ: 1959 Moller pipe organ playing from a six-year-old Rodgers console with added midi components. Seven ranks
