our
^
For sixty years, The Community Foundation has been serving our communities. Our
mission is to make the greater Holland/Zeeland area a better place in which to live and work by
enhancing the quality of life for all its citizens. We achieve this by:
Maintaining an organization through which our communities can build permanent
endowments that will serve the communities, and do so efficiently, with maximum tax
benefits to the donor.
Providing professional management of these funds to protect and enhance the principal
while maximizing income.
Using this income to meet needs and enhance the quality of life in ways that are
compatible with the wishes of the donor and the goals of The Community Foundation.
Our areas of interest are education, the arts, health, social services, environment,
recreation, community development, and the needs of the youth and the elderly. We
focus our grants on capital projects and new, creative endeavors.
Confirmed in compliance with
National Standards for US Community Foundations

to our
Sixty years ago who could have imagined that the
Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area
would be an outgrowth of similar efforts in the neighboring
communities of Zeeland and Holland? Or that it would have
received over $60 million dollars in gifts and awarded over
$33 million in grants? Who would have guessed that it would
be the steward of over $40 million in assets?
This past year, as we celebrated 60 years of community
foundation work in the Holland/Zeeland area, we used our
anniversary as an opportunity to highlight the important work
being done by the many excellent nonprofit organizations
we have supported in the community. Each day these
organizations make our community a little safer, a little
healthier, a little more beautiful, a little more hopeful, a little
better educated than the day before.
It has been a year to look back and be grateful. We have
been blessed with visionary leadership of both staff and
trustees, on whose shoulders we stand every day. We have
the opportunity to work with the most generous and selfless
people in the community; those who generously contribute
their time and resources as well as those who serve as
nonprofit leaders working every day to make the community a
better place. To each one who has impacted our community
in these past 60 years we say “thank you”.
As we look ahead, we remain rooted in the history and
mission of the foundation, even as we open new doors to
opportunities before us in 2012 and beyond.
With our gratitude for your support,
Janet DeYoung

Community foundation work began in 1951 with the
formation of the Holland Community Foundation, when
local community leaders saw the possibility of using
philanthropy to fund needed community projects such
as the Herrick Public Library Children’s Room, Holland
Hospital renovations, Holland Child Guidance Center
and the procurement of the DeZwaan Windmill from the
Netherlands. By 1973, movers and shakers in Zeeland
had established the Zeeland Community Foundation.
Early Zeeland projects included the acquisition of the
Historical Building, lighting for a local softball diamond,
donations to parks and Heritage Home.
Sixty years later the two foundations have since
merged and collectively distributed more than $33
million in charitable grants to community
organizations while building a permanent asset base
of $40 million to continue supporting local efforts in the
future.

In honor of our 60th
Anniversary, we decided to
sponsor a wide variety of
public events as a way to say
“thank you” to all who make
this community so strong.
Philanthropy is done by the
people in a community, not an
organization and these public
celebrations clearly
demonstrate that. This was
our way of saying thanks
to all who have made
Holland/Zeeland one of the
most philanthropic
communities in the country.

Leadership
Destination Education, one of the community catalytic efforts the Foundation
has launched, is funded with support from the National and Michigan College Access
Network, the Council of Michigan Foundations and the Kresge Foundation, leveraged
with local corporate, individual and foundation gifts. The Destination Education Advisory
Committee, made up of representatives of area schools, colleges, universities, businesses, and youth
serving organizations, seeks to make the completion of a post-secondary education an achievable reality
for all students in the Holland/Zeeland area, particularly among low-income, first generation and other high
needs students.
Investments have leveraged five years of a full time College Advising Corps (CAC) members’ placement at
Holland Public and West Ottawa High Schools. Plans are underway to secure a CAC member placement
for Zeeland Public Schools in the fall of 2012.
Helping students “Know How to Go” is centered around students:
Telling every adult in your life that you plan to attend a post high school program
Taking the right classes in high school
Finding the right fit (which college, or certification program is right)
Securing the money to go
Strategies addressing student barriers include engaging parents in the student’s plans, and creating a
community culture that values post high school education for all students.
Other Fiscal Sponsorships
The Community Foundation serves as Fiscal
Sponsor for several community campaigns and
initiatives. Each is charitable and consistent with
the foundation’s mission to support a broad range of
charitable activities.
Model Communities, a Holland/Zeeland initiative
motivated by the power of three-sector engagement to
provide benefits to all stakeholders and create a
sustainable future that provides the highest quality of life
for all. Three bold initiatives seek to pursue Best
Practice Governance for the 21st Century; Business
Growth through New Cluster Development; and Talent
Development through World Class Education.

The Foundation is proud of the work
and success of Ready for School,
which has become a model program
and best practice in community
collaboration. In 2011, Kindergarten
entrance tests showed an increase in
benchmark school readiness scores
from 55% to 63%. The initiative’s goal
is for 75% of incoming Kindergarteners
to meet readiness criteria by 2015.
Financial, volunteer and in-kind
support from many individuals
leveraged grants from local and
regional foundations, to provide:
Outreach and Support for
parents of young children
Professional Development
for Preschool staff
Preschool Tuition Assistance
for qualified children
Playgroups in high needs
neighborhoods
Kinder Camp for incoming
Kindergarten students
The Building Bridges
program, linking Preschool

Faith and family: this is the foundation on which Larry and Jeanie Koops have built their home and the
drive behind their motivation for philanthropy.
Growing up Larry and Jeanie were both taught to give and help others. Larry remembers times as
a child when his mother would bring extra food or clothes to the family next door and how those
actions were done out of generosity and compassion. His family never knew when they might be the
ones in need. “We give ultimately because everything we ‘own’ is a gift itself; whether it is financial,
material, work, or talents—it’s a gift from God.” The Koops’ philosophy has become a way of life for
them. They have made it a priority to carry on this philosophy of giving to their three children and their
spouses, as well as their eight grandchildren. Larry explains how they purposefully engage their kids
in conversations about giving back in many areas of life and the importance of continuing to follow their
passions to create a better future.
Jeanie’s gift with children is evident daily in her job as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Helen
Devos Children’s Hospital-Neurological Development. Her giving personality is also obvious in her
commitment to community involvement like her leadership role with GEMS and various health and
social agencies. Larry plays an active part in the community in his professional life as Community
President-Fifth Third Bank- Lakeshore Market. Giving has meant involvement over the years in each
community where they have lived, serving on school boards, business related and nonprofit boards,
volunteering/mentoring, United Way boards and other philanthropic endeavors. Giving back to the
community through leadership, talent and volunteering is important to both Larry and Jeanie.
One can easily see how key faith and family are in Larry and Jeanie’s lives. Their eyes sparkle as
they name each grandchild in the photographs they surround themselves with. They smile and laugh
together as they share family traditions at the cottage; the memories made by being together with
family and friends through the years. However, the past hasn’t always been easy for the Koops. They have
experienced loss firsthand with the passing of their twelve year old son, Jonathan, during the
Christmas season. Through this tragic experience their family grew closer, they appreciated the gift of
compassion from those around them, clung to their faith and took on a new urgency and understanding
of giving in many forms.
Jeanie explains how Jonathan has impacted their lives in so many ways including the passion to give.
“Before Jonathan died he had Christmas gifts paid and bought for every single family member.” He had
been working all year to buy and personally make these gifts, explains Jeanie. “They were bought with
a lot of care and thought for each person in the family.” The joy and thought that went into Jonathan’s
gifts increased the Koops desire to help and give to others. They will continue to treasure his gifts
forever.
One of the many ways the Koops have chosen to give is through becoming members of the Bridge
Builder Society. Through their estate they will fund a donor advised fund that their children will have
the opportunity to advise to carry on Larry and Jeanie’s commitment to giving. Larry and Jeanie give
to causes that their children support now and this fund will allow their children to support Larry and
Jeanie’s passions in the future. They view this as one means to give to meaningful causes, including
those unknown today, while involving the entire family and extending giving beyond themselves.

The assets of The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area are comprised of a collection of funds, each
one designed to achieve the unique charitable goals of the individuals, families, businesses and organizations that
established them. The funds vary in terms of purpose, but all are centered on the principal of building an asset base
that will provide key benefits to the community now and for future generations.
Endowment Funds may be established with a gift of $10,000 or more. You select the name for the fund. All gifts are
irrevocable. They are pooled and professionally managed in a diversified investment portfolio. The economies of
scale serve to increase their charitable impact. Each year a specified portion of the income earned (and/or principal
if deemed prudent) is used for grant awards that address emerging and evolving charitable causes in our community.
The Board of Trustees is charged with making spending allocations and final grant approvals for all fund types.

The Community Foundation’s Youth
Advisory Committee (YAC) is a group
of students from our local high schools
who are responsible for reviewing
funding requests and recommending
grants for programs that benefit area
youth. YAC members meet once
a month during the school year for
grantmaking, site visits to local
organizations, and learning about
community needs and philanthropy.
The YAC is enriched by the unique
perspective and experiences that each
member brings to the Committee’s
work.
The YAC program was established in
1991 through a challenge grant from
the Michigan Community Foundation
Youth Project (MCFYP) funded by the
W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The
mission of the YAC is to empower
young people, involve them in the
community and teach them about
philanthropy while serving as
stewards through grantmaking.
YAC members kicked off the year with
a kayak trip on the Macatawa
Greenway led by staff at the Outdoor
Discovery Center. In addition to their
regular grant review meetings, YAC
members also reviewed and awarded
a number of Community Service
Mini-Grants to empower youth
volunteerism. YAC members also
kept busy with site visits and service
projects at the Boys and Girls Club of
Holland and the Children’s Advocacy
Center. The YAC was proud to make
a proactive challenge grant in 2011 to
bring the spoken-word poetry group,
Kinetic Affect, to perform at area high
schools. The first performance took
place at West Ottawa School in
November and students there were
deeply inspired by the experience.
The Community Foundation is
extremely proud of our YAC members
and the enthusiasm, dedication, and
thoughtful consideration they bring to
their work as youth grantmakers and
community leaders.

We chose to set up the Family Hope Foundation Fund at the Community
Foundation because we want a solid foundation for our organization.
With an endowed fund we know our donors’ support will go on forever...
we can continue to strengthen the lives of children with special needs
and their families in our community.

We chose to set up the Jim and Shelly Bishop Family Fund because we
believe that giving back to our community is an investment in our community,
and like any investment, we want the highest and best return that we can get.
The Community Foundation of Holland / Zeeland provides the economies
of scale and professional oversight that ensures the best possible return to
meet the present and future needs of our community.
- Jim & Shelly Bishop

We chose to set up funds at the Community Foundation because
the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area provides
funding for West Michigan organizations which we support, and it
will continue to support those organizations after we are no longer
here.

We established a field of interest fund many years ago in honor of the ‘Greatest Generation’,
those parents and grandparents who had done so much to build our nation. We also recognized
that the ‘baby boomers’ were aging, including our own employees, and wanted to put in place a
fund to help support their future needs within the community.

We chose to set up an unrestrictred fund at the Community
Foundation because we believe that is the best way to broadly
support the community. An unrestricted fund gives the board the
most flexibility to meet the most important needs.
