of the School of Business
One year after advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history, the Liberty women’s basketball team reached the academic version of the “Sweet 16” for the third time, tying Lehigh for
the 14th-best grade-point-average among the nation’s Division I
women’s basketball teams.
Head Coach Carey Green’s Lady Flames accumulated a 3.338
team GPA during the 2005-06 academic year, earning a spot on the
Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25
Honor Roll for the first time since Green’s first season at Liberty,
1999-2000. That season, Liberty ranked 13th in America with a
3.302 GPA. The Lady Flames were 12th in 1998-99.
“I am proud of our team’s classroom achievement,” beamed
Green. “They have reached a standard that only a few teams reach.
Our team’s GPA, which ranks 14th in the nation out of 332 teams, is
a BIG DEAL. This is not an easy task. It is a great tribute to the discipline and character of each player in our program. It’s time to celebrate a ‘Sweet 16’ academic appearance!”
Seven Lady Flames recorded GPAs of 3.0 or higher, meriting
inclusion on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll. Those players
included junior Karolina Piotrkiewicz, sophomore Allyson Fasnacht
and freshmen Alexandria Bream, Megan Frazee, Molly Frazee,
Moriah Frazee and Rachel Hammond. Fasnacht was additionally
included on the Big South All-Academic team at season’s end.
“The big picture will reveal that our classroom performance will
impact our players’ future success in life more than any achievement on the basketball court,” stated Green. “The academic success of the Lady Flames exemplifies our mission statement:
‘Women of Excellence.’ It’s a pleasure to coach champions of the
classroom.”
