Inside the Park Volume 4 – Issue 1 Summer 2014 A Community Hub in the Making: Wesley Clover Parks Makes its Mark JS Communications I t’s a site most Kanata residents drive by on a regular basis: the former Nepean National Equestrian Park, a vast amount of green space and riding stables aptly located just east of the Kanata Research Park amidst the beautiful Greenbelt. With the introduction of entrepreneur Karen Sparks, daughter of high tech mogul Sir Terry Matthews, and the rebranding of the site to Wesley Clover Parks, things are going to get shaken up, and for the better. “It’s not just a site for those that love horses, or participate in equestrian events. We want to make Wesley Clover Parks accessible to everyone,” said Sparks. “It’s going to become a destination for families, and everyone of all ages. Our goal is for Wesley Clover Parks to become a hub for the community.” While immediate focus has been placed on the reopening of the site’s riding school and campground, more than $30 million will be injected into other amenities within the park over the next few years, including a forest school for preschool and kindergarten children, soccer fields and cross country ski trails. The Campground at Wesley Clover Parks has already been a popular destination since its opening, providing affordable trailer and tent camping within Ottawa’s city limits. In addition to a variety of features, each private site has a picnic table and fire pit, and there is free Wi-Fi for those that need to stay plugged in. For the not so faint of heart, Wesley Clover Parks hosted the BADASS Dash on July 19th, an obstacle course race with proceeds benefiting Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism. With a great team working alongside her, Sparks is determined to make her vision for Wesley Clover Parks a reality. “In five years, what I would really love is a robust schedule of activities being offered year-round at Wesley Clover Parks. Ideally, every Saturday and Sunday, you wouldn’t need to check a website to know something is going on there. Whether it’s pony rides, Winterlude West, or cross country skiing, Wesley Clover Parks would simply be a hub of activity for everyone of all ages.” For more information on Wesley Clover Parks, please visit: www.wesleycloverparks.com 1 KRP Welcomes New Tenants! K RPC is pleased to announce the re-certification of 303 Terry Fox Drive, 411 Legget Drive and 2500 Solandt Road as Level 2, BOMA BESt buildings. BOMA BESt is the Canadian industry standard for commercial building sustainability certification. It is a unique, voluntary national program designed to assess the environmental performance and management of existing buildings. The program provides a consistent framework for owners and managers to critically assess key areas of environmental performance and management. There are many reasons why owners and managers pursue BOMA BESt certification for their buildings, 6 including reduced operating costs and greater energy, water and waste efficiencies. It has been found that greener buildings have superior indoor air quality, more engaged tenants and overall a more pleasant atmosphere. Here at KRP, it is our hope that the certification of the buildings mentioned above, in addition to the Blackwood Business Centre (555 Legget, 535 Legget & 515 Legget), demonstrates our commitment to sustainability. Our use of this benchmarking process enables us to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and move toward our goal of creating innovative, unique environments that enable our tenants to succeed and flourish. Over the past few months, we have been working to upgrade HVAC equipment and to optimize the functionality of existing equipment for maximum efficiency. A new LED lighting program has been initiated that will bring about considerable savings thanks to Hydro One’s Energy Retrofit Incentive Programme (ERIP). These initiatives continue to push us in the right direction and we encourage our tenants to contact us to discuss any concerns or ideas they may have, so we can work together as landlord and tenant to improve efficiency and sustainability in our buildings all across campus! Karen Waters, Client Coordinator for the Kanata Food Cupboard, with KRP Staff. Tenant Spotlight – Kanata Food Cupboard T he Kanata Food Cupboard is a not-for-profit registered charity providing food assistance to self-identifying individuals and families residing in Kanata. Created in 1985 to address a need in our community, the Kanata Food Cupboard is apolitical and non-denominational serving anyone who seeks our assistance. Though it may come as a surprise, there is a significant need for assistance in our community and, unfortunately, this need grows each year. Currently, up to 260 families (about 1000 individuals) are assisted every month. Food is provided to sustain a family for six days, and can be accessed every 30 days. In addition to providing food assistance, the Kanata Food Cupboard offers special food hampers at Easter and Thanksgiving and has a back-to- school program in September, where basic school supplies are provided. At Christmas, the Kanata Food Cupboard coordinates an adopt-a-family program which provides a hamper and toys to applying families. This demand is also increasing every year, and this past Christmas 350 families received hampers. Many Kanata corporations, businesses, schools, groups and families adopt a family and this form of support is most certainly welcomed and appreciated. The Kanata Food Cupboard has only two part-time staff. The bulk of the work is done by several hundred volunteers who collectively donate thousands of hours every year. A board of 12 volunteer Directors oversees the organization. The Kanata Food Cupboard is fortunate to receive 17% of program budget funding from the City of Ottawa. This means the organization relies on the generosity of the Kanata community for 83% of their funding and virtually all food donations. Serving the community from two locations, the main “store” location is at 20 Young Road, where clients shop for their groceries, which now include fresh foods such as meat, dairy, fruits and vegetables. A warehouse site, where food is collected, sorted and stored, is at 340 Legget Drive. The Kanata Food Cupboard is extremely appreciative for the very generous lease and support received from KRP Development Group and their staff. For more information or to find out how your organization can help, please visit the web site at www.kanatafoodcupboard.ca or call Karen or Patricia at (613) 355-9834. 7 Experience V.I.P. @ Brookstreet Escape to Ottawa’s only all-inclusive resort! We were glad to be back and I’m sure you noticed my crew hard at work over the past month or two doing spring cleanup, planting flowers and replacing a few trees around campus. As many of my friends and colleagues in the KRP office will tell you, I am often called upon to share my experience and advice with regard to various planting, gardening or landscaping questions and we thought it might be helpful to share some of these tips here. In this issue, we will look at pruning small trees and flowering shrubs. STEWART’S PRUNING TIPS Trees & Flowering Shrubs • Flowering shrubs that bloom in the spring should be pruned immediately after flowering. This will maximize flowering the following year. • Summer and/or early autumn flowering shrubs should be pruned just as the growth starts in the spring. • Do not prune any flowering shrub in late summer or fall! Doing so could stimulate new growth which would be susceptible to damage from frigid winter temperatures. • When removing tree limbs, cut close to the trunk, but never into the trunk. Try to cut through the branch collar, or annulus, a wave or ring of sorts joins the branch to the trunk (see diagram). Concentrated growth in this area will facilitate faster healing. • Remember the three D’s: dead, diseased & deranged! Dead wood, diseased material and “deranged” limbs (those growing in crazy directions) can be pruned at almost any time of year. • Always use good quality, sharp tools. A sharp saw or pruner leaves behind a cleaner cut. Ragged cuts increase the change of infection and/or disease. Clean your tools after pruning each plant to prevent any spread of disease, etc. Please forward any suggestions or questions you may have for future KRP Landscaping Reports to jhayley@krpc. net. We look forward to reading them. Have a great summer! 9 PLAY. THEN PLAY.
