Presidents Message
I’d like to wish everyone a happy and
healthy New Year. Although I couldn’t
attend, I understand International Convention was a great success, with everyone attending having a good time.
Since my last message in December, a
lot of events have occurred.
We were all horrified by the massacre
in Newtown, Conn. It still haunts me.
People all over the world supported
residents of Newtown, especially the
communities of Aurora, Colorado and
Virginia Tech, where the last atrocities
occurred. Sticking together and helping
others are tenets of what we are at
Alpha Omega—helping others in need
in our local D.C. chapter and internationally through our Foundation. For
instance, we are raising money for the
new Rothstein-Williamowsky wing of
the dental school at Hebrew University. We also help those in need locally
outside of Alpha Omega.
Adam Frieder
President
Last month, our local chapter participated in two significant Tichon Olom
events. The first, through the hard
work of a dedicated group of dentists,
led by Dick Meltzer and including Jeff
Cross and me, we saw the fruits of our
continued commitment to renovate
the Hebrew Home’s Dental Clinic into
a state-of-the-art facility. The new
clinic will lead us into the future and
allow us to provide the utmost in care
to the nondenominational residents of
the Hebrew Home. We will be having
an opening reception that we hope all
will attend and see why volunteer involvement is worthwhile.
CAPITOL
ALUMNOTES
Our second Tichon Olom event last
month was a gift card drive in conjunction with the JSSA to help needy families during Hanukkah. We raised more
than $750 during this first year of the
drive. I hope we make this an annual
event.
On a more social note, those of us
who attended our Hanukkah bowling
party had a great time and feasted on
latkas and jelly doughnuts. Special
thanks to Adam Sherman and Dror
Orbach for organizing this fun event.
Thanks also to Steve Kahan and Mike
Stern for seamlessly moving our
monthly meeting to Positano’s restaurant. From the attendance and feedback we received, I know the move
was a good one. By the way, we welcomed many new and returning members and guests to our chapter at that
meeting.
Thanks for everyone’s hard work. I’m
looking forward to seeing you our exciting meeting with the Baltimore
alumni and the University of Maryland
Zeta Mu chapter at our Brunch and
Learn in Columbia. May our new year
be one of health, happiness, prosperity
and peace.
Fraternally,
Adam

I just had the privilege of attending the
AO convention in Scottsdale, and a couple of feel good stories took place there
that I would like to share. First, on Dec.
25th, a large contingent of AO members
and families participated in an Alpha
Omega Global Oral Health Initiative
event, which the Fraternity organizes
each year. This year , a bus load of AO's
went to the convention center and
helped the Salvation Army provide
Christmas dinner for anyone who felt in
need and showed up. Amazingly, over
5,000 needy people, mostly young families with kids , arrived to be fed . This is
really a nice example of something AO
does which makes a difference.
Also, of great note, as far as I am concerned was the appearance at our convention of the dean of the Palestinian
Dental School, Al Kuds University. He
came along with his wife and not only addressed the opening session, but stayed
with us the entire week, fully participating
in all activities. It was nice to see he and
his wife dancing and welcoming in the
new year . He was described by Adam
Stabholz, dean of Hebrew University
Haddasah Dental School as a brave man.
The two schools have in recent years had
joint dental symposiums, exchanged students and had various programs together
in a display of collaboration and friendship
which is almost unprecedented in the Israeli-Palestinian world these days. A large
sculpture, the tree of peace graces the
entrances to both schools (as well as
Temple University). and is truly a remarkable symbol of the spirit of cooperation
and collaboration and friendships that are
being established. All of these things are
being accomplished through the efforts of
Alpha Omega and Alpha Omegans to act
as facilitators and set an example of what
is possible! Just a couple of more great
examples of why AO is such a great organization. Ben Williamowsky said recently that one of his friends, seeing how
active he still is in AO and all the time he
spends on AO projects,, asked "why do
you still do this stuff?" His response was
"If you were doing it too you would
know!" And on that note, happy new year
to all.

“Tell it to the Judge”: The legal side of dentistry
What to Know before Plugging in that iPod, Popping in that CD or Turning on that Radio for Your Waiting Room
Feel like playing a little light rock in your
waiting room? Or perhaps hooking up
your iPod and running through your vast
music collection? Sure, your patients
might appreciate some deep tracks, but
unless you’ve paid the right fees to the
right music rights management companies, you could be setting yourself up for
trouble, according to Melana Kopman
McClatchey, general counsel for the
Georgia Dental Association. Writing in
the September issue of GDA Action, Ms.
McClatchey notes that a number of licensing organizations, like The Society of
European Stage Authors & Composers
and Broadcast Music, Inc., represent
songwriters and performers and issue
licensing agreements and monitor businesses to uncover possible copyright infringement of their members’ songs and
music.
Dentists, however, may enjoy an exemption, however, as outlined in the Fairness
in Music Licensing Act of 1998, a federal
law that gives a break to small businesses.
According to the law, non-food or drink
establishments less than 2,000 square feet
can play audio music from radio or television without having to pay a public performance licensing fee. Other exemptions
apply to businesses depending on the
number of televisions or audio speakers
on the premises, and the size of the television screens. Purchased music, such as
CDs, however, probably still require licensing, Ms. McClatchey says.
Dentists who wish to play music for their
patients can enter into agreements with
background music providers, businesses
that have already arranged with copyright
owners for the right of their customers
The regulations that govern the use of to broadcast music publically.

vary, depending on the size of the venue, Before deciding that your practice is exthe number of members of the public empt from the requirements of music

Member Spotlight: Adam Sherman
Perhaps a familiar face to many, a formal introduction
to AO Capitol Alumnotes is beyond overdue. Adam
comes to us from the great state of Ohio, but now
calls Washington D.C. home.
Exciting as it may seem, he had dentistry set in his
sights at an early age. Adam worked under the tutelage
of his father who is a fellow Alpha Omega frater currently practicing in Cincinnati, OH. The long journey
to DC began in the cornfields at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and a slight detour through
Boston where he received his DMD at Boston University. Some may say that it was “that dirty water” that
did him in, but in all reality Adam was ready to move
on to bigger and brighter places: Washington, DC. In
true DC fashion, he was able to add government employee to his resume as general practice resident at
the Veterans Affairs Hospital. Following graduation
from the residency program in 2010, Adam forged into
a new world in the land of Virginia where he now works fulltime. He enjoys making the
cross commute drive into Fairfax, VA every day and brightening the smiles of those patients
who he treats as an associate at
Gentle Dental Care of Northern VA.
Outside of working, he loves spending time with his
girlfriend Lauren and walking his lovable Portuguese
water dog puppy named Findlay. Albeit a diehard Cincinnati sports fan, he anxiously awaits a much cherished
championship trophy or perhaps just one playoff win.
As one of the co-social chairs, Adam is looking forward
to the beginning of another wonderful Alpha Omega
calendar year and he wanted to wish everyone a happy
and healthy new year.

- Andy Lasky, Sam Blum and Ron Starr
I’d like to wish this year's convention was
held at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa,
in Scottsdale, Arizona. Our Chapter's members who were in attendance were Sam &
Phyllis Blum, Steve & Ellie Kahan, Andy and
Suzanne Lasky, David & Joanne Schneider,
Ron & Shirlee Starr, Michael & Joan Stern,
and Ben & Minna Williamowsky.
The International Fraternity's Board of Directors Meetings plan and direct the International Fraternity's activities. Washington,
D.C. members on the Board are David
Schneider, Treasurer and Michael Stern, Editor.
The U.S. Foundation and all International Alpha Omega Foundations hold a meeting, also.
Washington, D.C. Chapter members of the
U.S. Foundation are Steve Kahan, Treasurer;
Andrew Lasky, Member at Large; and Sam
Blum, Immediate Past Chair of the U.S. Foundation.
The Convention Business Meetings are official meetings for all Alpha Omega business. In
addition to the above- named fraters, our
Chapter was allowed 3 Delegates to the
Convention. Our Chapter's Delegates were
Andy Lasky, Ron Starr & Sam Blum. Sam
Blum also served as Parliamentarian for the
Business Sessions.
One of the speakers at the Business Meetings
was Dr. Perry Brickman. Dr. Brickman was
"flunked out " of Emery University in a period
when Jews were singled out by the dean and
most were either flunked out or subjected to
gross antisemitism in school. He later went
on to a distinguished career as an oral surgeon after graduating from Tennessee. Emery
recently issued an unprecedented apology to
Dr. Brickman and others for this treatment.
This story was featured on CNN and elsewhere in the last few months. Dr. Brickman
presented to our Fraternity many examples
of anti-semitic activities of several U.S. Dental
Schools. He then told of his and Alpha
Omega's actions to help reverse and defeat
such activities. It was a very moving presentation.
Another special speaker was the Dean of AlQuds University Dental School, in the West
Bank. Dean Musa Bajali emphasized the wonderful support that his Dental School has received from Dean Adam Stabholz from Hebrew University Hadassah School of Dental
Medicine, founded by Alpha Omega. That
was a very special example of Israeli/
Palestinian cooperation.
“display of

Elections were held during the meetings, also.
Marcy Schwartzman from Vancouver, Canada
was elected as International President; Avi
Wurman from Toronto, Canada was elected
as President-elect. Our own David Schneider
was elected for another three-year term as
Treasurer and Michael Stern continues as
International Editor.
Our Chapter's Historian, Sam Blum, with the
AMAZING HELP of Fred Simon, provided
our application for AO's Chapter Efficiency
Award. The D.C. Chapter was one of the
three winners!!!
Of course, a great Continuing Education Program was held during the Convention, also
attended by our Steve Cohen. Subjects included Lasers, Occlusion, Third Molars, Implants, Esthetic Dentistry and Oral Surgery.

Welcome Breakfast, Foundation Gala, Memorial Service and Shabbat Dinner, Honor's
Night Reception & Dinner, watching the
Washington Redskins win over the Dallas
Cowboys in our D.C. Hospitality room, New
Year's Eve Dinner & Celebration and Farewell Breakfast.
Prior to our New Year's Eve celebration, the
Alpha Omega Foundation Auction was held.
Ron & Shirlee Starr and Sam & Phyllis Blum
contributed jewelry items to the auction.
Andy & Suzanne Lasky contributed sports
items and a week at their vacation home.
Arnie Feldman and Ben Williamowsky contributed one of their original sculptures.
Minna & Ben also contributed other items for
the silent auction. THANK YOU all.
Other "fun activities" included Spouses Lunch
and Guided Tour of the Musical Instrument
Museum (MIM); Spouses Brunch with Tennis
Pro Shop fashions modeled by AO spouses
(male & female); Teen Nights; Tennis Tournament and Golf Tournament.
Let's plan for next year's " AO Shore to Ship
Convention". That will include the Harbor
Beach Marriott in Fort Lauderdale and a
cruise on the Holland America Eurodam
from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to St.
Thomas, San Juan, Grand Turk and Half
Moon Cay. It was also announced that the
2014 convention will be held in Israel.

2013 AO Convention
We are pleased to announce the 2013 AO Convention: Ultimate Ship to Shore.
The shore part will be held at the Harbor Beach Marriott for four days and then we
move to the Holland America Eurodam for a 7-day western Caribbean cruise.
Right now, it's possible to place a deposit on the cruise through our travel partner,
Jodi Murphy, from Cruise and Travel Partners. Jodi reserved a block of cabins for
our members, family, and friends. We truly encourage you to make this an extended
family and friend vacation.
Why book now? Although Jodi has a strong connection with Holland America, this
cruise is also open to the public. Reserving now ensures that you will have the room
you want. Working with Jodi will allow our group to receive special incentives.
Also, to receive the tax credit, it's essential to reserve a cabin with Jodi.
Book now with Jodi to be entered into a $250 onboard credit. Her expert
guidance will help you choose your cabin and provide ongoing support until next
December.
