This wonderful event hosted by the New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce is a great place to experience the Hudson Valley's fine cuisine, agricultural displays and visit with a variety of vendors. New Paltz is a beautiful place to live and visit whether you want to walk or bike on the nearby Hudson Valley Rail Trail; shop and eat at the local businesses and restaurants; visit some of the historic sites or the SUNY New Paltz campus; there are so many exciting things to do and see. Ulster County provides downtown New Paltz with a continuous bus loop (UCAT) connecting residents and visitors to res- taurants, shopping and other locations. As County Executive I am pleased that we now have available a smartphone app (download "UCA T" at the App Store or Google Play) that allows users to track buses and provides real time arrival information using GPS technology. It is amazing that the Taste of New Paltz is in its 25th year and seems to surpass expectations each year. It is a terrific opportunity to sample some of the best cuisine and fare in the Hudson Valley from the finest restaurants, caterers, farm markets, wineries and brew masters. Twenty-five years later, Taste of New Paltz has grown from a small event with a handful of local businesses participating to an annual showcase of regional food, wine, spirits and entertainment expected to attract more than 10,000 people to the Ulster County Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 19. The first Taste of New Paltz was held October 20, 1991 at the Rivendell Winery on Albany Post Rd. Mazzetti-Olson, co-chair of the event, told local press at the time that she initiated the idea at a Chamber meeting as a way to let people see all that New Paltz has to offer “in a hurry.” Local businesses were enlisted to participate in the event touted as “something every member of the family can enjoy and the whole family can enjoy together.” It was reported afterward that 20 eateries participated and 70 local merchants donated items for an auction. Free winery tours were offered to the 2500 people or so who attended. The roster of restaurants at the event contained familiar names that show up on this year’s list of participating eateries, too, including Mohonk Moun- I STORMVILLE AIRPORT ANTIQUE SHOW & FLEA MARKET OVER 600 EXHIBITORS Oct. 10 - 11 “Christmas in November” Nov. 7 - 8 8am - 4pm • Rain or Shine Exhibitor space available Free Admission & Parking • No Pets 428 Rte. 216, Stormville, NY • 845-221-6561 www.stormvilleairportfleamarket.com LAUREN THOMAS 6• September 2015 Connecting Community and Business tain House and P&G’s. By 1994, the event’s popularity inspired a change in venue to the Ulster County Fairgrounds. The fourth annual Taste of New Paltz boasted 24 participating restaurants and 5000 visitors attended to purchase samples of local fare at $1 a “taste.” Michael Beck of P&G’s told a reporter at the time that 1200 samples of their chicken wings and clam chowder had been purchased at the festival the year prior. While their booth went through 300 pounds of chicken wings and 15 gallons of chowder, “We’re not out here to make money,” Beck said. “We’re out here to promote our business and support the Chamber.” Visitors to the fairgrounds in 1996 brought appetites so ravenous that many of the two dozen restaurants taking part in Taste of New Paltz that year ran out of food hours before the festival ended. Some sent their people back to town for reinforcement rations, while others shut down early. The tenth anniversary of Taste of New Paltz in September 2000 brought record attendance. Elaborately designed booths were apparently much in evidence that year, with P&G’s sunflower theme inviting favorable comment. The entire setting described to a reporter as being “so upscale, you forgot you were standing in dirt under a tent.” Over the course of the next five years, attendance crept ever upward. In 2005, the Chamber expected 5000 visitors. Some 9000 showed up. The need to develop a strategy for coping with traffic was voiced. More tents were added the next year, along with a separate area for kids, the business and fitness expo and more bathrooms. Farmstands joined the restaurants as participants. So did a greater number of local wine and beer purveyors. The Taste of New Paltz since then has consistently drawn nearly 10,000 visitors each year. The Chamber hopes to surpass that number in this 25th anniversary year with the help of a few new things on the table, including a Wi-Fi hotspot and minu Just Lake tes from Ge Use A orge selfie station, a “rare beer” experience for an additional fee, and a dedicated event website at www.tasteofnewpaltz.com. Visitors are invited to Tweet the good time they’re having at #Taste25 and for the first time the “tastes” will be purchased with cash (or credit card if the vendor allows) rather than tickets. One thing that hasn’t changed is the event serving as the major fundraiser of the year for the New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce. When MazzettiOlson spoke to local press in ‘91 about the new Taste of New Paltz event, she said it would promote business in New Paltz and raise money for the Chamber. She told a reporter that people often asked her, “Why support the Chamber?” Her response to them, she said, was that supporting the Chamber was not only about what they do for their members but what they do for the community as a whole. Today the New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce is under the leadership of executive director Kathy Prizzia, who took the position earlier this year. She has many years experience volunteering for the Taste. Coinciding with the event’s 25th anniversary, the New Paltz Chamber of Commerce is making a concerted effort to rebrand and reenergize for the digital age. In the past, entertainment has been largely limited to kids’ activities and live music from local musicians. While those staples will be returning, this year they’ll be complemented by wireless hotspots to make it easier for guests to tweet and Instagram their meals, or just Your Natural Skin Care & Make Up Center to share a selfie with friends. In perhaps its boldest dive into the digital age the Chamber also plans to set up a Selfie Station to encourage guests to share the documentations of their visit. Its focus is on giving its members opportunities to network, share resources, and grow their businesses. “We organize and come up with ideas for events, ones that are out of the ordinary,” says Valentino. PLAY. LOVE. Playfulness is what makes the annual Taste of New Paltz so much fun for the whole family. This year, it’s better than ever! The festival atmosphere creates a kid-friendly, casual environment. The outdoor venue provides plenty of room for relaxing or running around on the grass, separate from the main food areas. The tastes are individual servings of every type of food and beverage, often attractively garnished, and enjoyed within a couple of bites. They happen to be a great size for children. Due to the limited specialty menus offered by each vendor, kids get to enjoy easy “ordering,” Young people love the free activities in the dedicated children’s area. And children under 12 are admitted free to The Taste of New Paltz! “Life is more fun if you play games.” ~ Roald Dahl Part of the appeal of a family festival is the opportunities for children to have their own experiences. The children’s area is cheerfully decorated for fall with hay bales and helium balloons, identifying it as a youth space and encouraging kids in. The games are staffed by students from SUNY New Paltz athletic teams. You’re right there watching, sipping your crafted beer, while the kids feel independent exploring the range of play choices. All ages will enjoy this year’s assortment of free activities. Families can receive a free child identity kit through Masonic Child Identification Programs. The set includes a fingerprint card, a physical description of the child, and a computer disk to provide to police if ever needed. These child-identity kits are popular. The personal information collected about your child is strictly confidential and stored on the disk, not entered into a database like other organizations do. It’s secure and ready when you need it. Has your family ever been adorned with LAUREN THOMAS face painting by members of the Bruderhof community? Kids like to feel transformed, imagining a new identity with their new painted facial features. The colorful designs can cover part or all of the face, while some children prefer a simple illustration on the back of a hand. Take a look at the display photos for ideas and inspiration. When was the last time your kids bobbed for apples? Have they ever tried this autumn tradition? Hurd’s Family Farm has donated plenty of fruit for every kid to go apple bobbing at this year’s Taste. You think you know someone until you tie one of your legs together and compete in a three-legged race. Suddenly, walking or running becomes a huge effort, requiring focus, communication and luck. The event usually results in numerous falls and peals of laughter. Your kids have a chance to try their luck and skill for a hole in one at the foot-golf Toughtfully Prepared Vegetarian Fare Serving Breakfast & Lunch All Day 8:30-4:30 Closed Tuesday 2356 RT 44/55 GARDINER 845-255-4949 • WWW.MIOGARDINER.COM VISIT US ON FACEBOOK! 0QFO%BJMZt#SVODI -VODIt%JOOFS Live Music Garden Dining Catering and Carryout Options Available 434 Main Street, Rosendale, NY 845.658.9048 www.rosendalecafe.com September 2015 • 17 www.TasteofNewPaltz.com son Darrick Jr., age nine, on drums. You can get more photo-ops with the kids’ heads in the farm character cutouts that are on display. With all of these terrific activities, kids will work up an appetite. You can treat them to a fresh-scooped ice cream cone from Stewart’s for only $2, right in the children’s area. Y O shoot: just kick a soccer ball into the designated hole. If you haven’t had a chance to play foot golf, this “taste” of it will probably have you heading over to golf course for more. Enjoy the last vestiges of summer with a water balloon toss. Throw and catch your water balloon back and forth with your partner. The game becomes more challenging as you increase the space between you for each successful shot. When your kids need quiet time, cozy up and gather around for special storytime readings with the Highland Public Library. Listen to see which books you know already, and which could become new favorites. Be sure your little creative artists spend time at the crafting area, hosted by Circle of Friends. Area children’s activities The Taste of New Paltz is so welcoming to children and families that many New Paltz restaurants include special details to help their youngest guests feel comfortable while dining out. Karma Road has baskets of children’s toys. The Village Tea Room has a children’s table area next to a large chalk board. The Bakery has a dedicated children’s play area. Frida’s Bakery & Cafe in Milton offers a large play area, decorative children’s tables, and even hosts regular baking classes for children and their caregivers. When local businesses and organizations create children-friendly accommodations, customer loyalty always follows. Public programming at Minnewaska State Park Preserve includes instruction for all ages, from babes-in-the-woods hikes to teen homeschoolers, which can boost visits and increase the quality of those visits. Families want to return for a different class. Mohonk Preserve’s toddlers-on-the-rail wanderings help families learn about accessible local hikes, support the land, and learn to spend time together outdoors. Moms come together for shopping as well as for social circles at New Baby New Paltz and New Baby New World, bonding with their babies, making new friends, and feeling less isolated as new parents. Music brings young people together, with vibrant offerings from the newly formed September 2015 • 19 www.TasteofNewPaltz.com High Ridge Youth Choir in New Paltz to The Paul Green Rock Academy in Woodstock, where dynamic performances give children practical musical experience and bring in paying customers to area venues.
