But now it seems they may have the last laugh, with research showing vegetarians are more intelligent than their meat-eating friends. A study of thousands of men and women revealed that those who stick to a vegetarian diet have IQs that are around five points higher than those who regularly eat meat. Writing in the British Medical Journal, the researchers say it isn’t clear why veggies are brainier—but admit the fruit and veg-rich vegetarian diet could somehow boost brain power. The researchers, from the University of Southampton, tracked the fortunes of more than eight thousand volunteers for twenty years. At the age of ten, the boys and girls sat a series of tests designed to determine their IQ. When they reached the age of thirty, they were asked whether they were vegetarian and their answers compared to their childhood IQ score. Around four and a half per cent of the adults were vegetarian—a figure that is broadly in line with that found in the general population. However, further analysis of the results showed those who were brainiest as children were more likely to have become vegetarian as adults, shunning both meat and fish. The typical adult veggie had a childhood IQ of around 105— around five points higher than those who continued to eat meat as they grew up. The vegetarians were also more likely to have gained degrees and hold down high-powered jobs. There was no difference in IQ between strict vegetarians and those who classed themselves as veggie but still ate fish or chicken. However, vega n s — veg e t a r i a n s who also avoid dairy products—scored significantly lower, averaging an IQ score of 95 at the age of ten. Researcher Dr Catharine Gale said there could be several explanations for the findings, including intelligent people being more likely to consider both animal welfare issues and the possible health benefits of a vegetarian diet. Previous work has shown that vegetarians tend to have lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol, cutting their risk of heart attacks. They are also less likely to be obese. Alternatively, a diet which is rich in fruit, vegetables and wholegrains may somehow boost brain power. Dr Gale said: “Although our results suggest that children who are more intelligent may be more likely to become vegetarian as adolescents or young adults, it does not rule out the possibility that such a diet might have some beneficial effect on subsequent cognitive performance. Might the nature of the vegetarians’ diet have enhanced their apparently superior brain power? Was this the mechanism that helped them achieve the disproportionate nature of degrees?” High-profile vegetarians include singers Paul McCartney and Morrissey and actress Jenny Seagrove. Past exponents of a meat-free lifestyle include George Bernard Shaw and Benjamin Franklin. Promoting the cause, Shaw said, ‘A mind of the caliber of mine cannot drive its nutriment from cows’, while Franklin stated that a vegetarian diet resulted in ‘greater clearness of head and quicker comprehension’. Liz O’Neill, of the Vegetarian Society, said: “We’ve always known that vegetarianism is an intelligent, compassionate choice benefiting animals, people and the environment. Now, we’ve got the scientific evidence to prove it.” Maybe that explains why many meat-reducers are keen to call themselves vegetarians when even they must know that vegetarians don’t eat chicken, turkey or fish!’ —Evening Standard, London APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 5 Free Night on an ISLAND! It uses the electrical field that surrounds human beings to transmit data. This is how this magic trick works: a small signal generator carried in a pocket transmits a weak impulse via the cell surface of the skin that the receiver can detect up to an arm’s length away. That makes it possible to open doors, operate electrical equipment or transmit medical data, such as pulse and breathing rate, without contact and without using expensive radio frequencies. —Deutschland MOBILITY AT THE BAT OF AN EYELID Oceans Get Acid-Rocked L ifting your head means “go”. Turning your head left or right steers in the appropriate direction. Opening and closing your mouth means “stop”. The system that Ulrich Canzier has developed at his small Aachen, Germany-based company Cancontrols gives paralyzed people in wheelchairs an element of mobility: a wheelchair that can be controlled by gestures. The heart of the system is software that Canzier has programmed to translate patterns of human movement into steering commands. The data is supplied by a camera mounted on the wheelchair’s special computer that records the user’s face thirty times a second. The mobility system was scheduled to begin series production by the end of 2 0 0 6 . Wheelchair users will not be the only ones to benefit from Cancontrols’ ideas. A car company, a safe manufacturer and computer games developers have a l r e a d y expressed an interest to researchers in Aachen. — Deutschland T he world’s oceans are becoming more acidic, which poses a threat to sea life and Earth’s fragile food chain, a climate expert said yesterday. Oceans have already absorbed one-third of the world’s emissions of carbon dioxide, one of the heat-trapping gases blamed for global warming, leading to acidification that prevents vital sea life from forming properly. “The oceans are rapidly changing,” said Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf on the sidelines of a U.N. conference that has drawn delegates from more than one hundred countries to Nairobi, Kenya. “Ocean acidification is a major threat to marine organisms.” —AP APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 7 Earth Star Up Front FULL MOONS AND THE STOCK MARKET I f you’ve always suspected there’s a little lunacy in the stock market, now there’s proof. It’s the full moon, of course, which legend says brings on depression and pessimism, not to mention werewolves. If that’s true, presumably it would also trigger a gloomy outlook about future cash flows, causing investors to take fewer risks, and stock prices to fall. “We find strong lunar cycle effects in stock returns,” say University of Michigan Business School professors Ilia D. Dichev and Troy D. Janes in a research report. “Specifically, returns in the fifteen days around new moon dates are about double the returns in the fifteen days around full moon dates. This pattern of returns is pervasive,” they report. The scholars set out to examine the folk wisdom that moon cycles affect human behavior, especially abnormal behavior around full moons. They turned to stock markets to get a 8 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 big enough sample, as millions of people make billions of trades on a regular basis. They gathered data on major U.S. stock markets over the past one hundred years, and on the markets of twenty-four other nations going back thirty years. “Taken as a whole, this evidence is consistent with popular beliefs that lunar cycles affect human behavior,” the researchers concluded. The Harvard Business Review, reporting the research in a recent issue, says that while these findings “are a bit off the beaten path, they’re the product of rigorous research.” “So even though we might not be ready just yet to consult lunar cycles for guidance on all our stock trades and other major decisions,” the Harvard Business Review says, “we should keep in mind that unexpected sources can beget robust data and analysis, and that correlation and causality must be carefully examined.” APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 9 ADVERTISEMENT PEOPLE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD Neal Robert Smookler: Passionate Advocate for His Profession “It’s not so much a new therapy, it’s more like a new idea. In fact, the profession is evolving into quite a unique helping system” - says Neal Smookler. What Smookler is so passionate about is a seemingly simple method that ‘reboots’ the brain much like you’d reboot your home computer. “Its eloquence lies in its simplicity, most importantly it’s safe,” the Wellesley Alphabioticist replies. (Alpha, what? ... was my first response, but we’ll get to that in a moment.) This is the certainty with which Smookler speaks. At 42, he has been ‘rebooting’ brains for well over a decade. Smookler is serious about his work and others take him seriously, despite his smiling blue eyes and youthful looks. Growing up in Framingham, about 30 minutes west of Boston, he is one of two children of Edward and Phyllis Smookler. “It’s funny, a lot of people recognize the last name because it’s so unique and many remember seeing that family name on my Dad’s dental office for forty plus years”. Upon receiving his bachelors degree in Biology from BC, he went on to continue his professional studies for a number of years in Los Angeles, CA. After moving back home, Smookler set up shop in July 1990 in The Back Bay neighborhood of Boston, where until this winter’s move to Hopkinton, he still resides as an Alphabioticist (I promise you we will get to that in a moment.) Smookler grins half-nostalgically remembering a seminar he attended in October 1991. “Throughout the weekend the gentleman presenting the seminar kept mentioning this ‘brain reboot’. At weekends end, he invited anyone who wanted a ‘reboot’ to lie down. My first thought was lie down 10 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 where? There’s nothing but seminar tables with table cloths, hard candy and pitchers of ice water.” “Oh well. I lay down while apprehensively awaiting my turn, all the while trying not to knock over the water pitchers. Then, without so much as an explanation, the gentleman proceeded to perform the ‘reboot.’ “It was very brief, so brief in fact that I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I got up and I was, uh ... humming. I was literally resonating in what I can only describe as ‘an insulated cocoon of peace.’ It was as if the heaviness of my life somehow lifted. Do you know what I mean? I seemed to shift out of ‘brown out’, no longer waiting for the proverbial second shoe to drop. I felt like my brain, my entire body had been re-set, providing me with a clean slate.” Well, now Smookler really had my attention. What exactly was done on that Autumn weekend back in 1991? He explains to me that the ‘reboot’ is a colloquial metaphor that refers to The Alphabiotic Method. “It’s based upon the same fundamental principle as rebooting a computer. It involves a manual, hands-on method that introduces a refreshing sensory pattern interrupt to the brain. It’s a very pleasant, very positive communication that instantly balances both halves of the brain, clears stress switches and resets the system. There are no machines or instruments used - it’s very low tech and organic.” He continues, “It’s a catalyst for the brain to do a complete systems check. Now, without a perceived clear and present danger, the brain finds no need to remain locked in the daily ’hypervigilant’ fight or flight stress response. As the brain shifts out of this defensive, fragmented, outerreactive, ‘emergency stand-by’ mode misappropriated resources are freed Neal Robert Smookler up to attend to priorities which had been ‘swept-under-the-rug’. It encourages the brain to ‘refresh’ itself - much like hitting the REFRESH button to refresh a web page on your home computer.” “When the body perceives danger - resources for healing, thinking, joy, sleep, creativity and tapping the authentic expression of you - get placed on the ‘back burner’ where they will remain until you shift out of that survival pattern. This method really is a proven way to stop today’s stress from needlessly draining your system of its precious energy and resources.” Smookler’s work has been featured locally on such media venues as WBZ, WZBC & WATD. When asked what he enjoys most about his work - Smookler hesitates for a moment, then as if the answer was there all along he replies, “people often come with a sadness, an emptiness. Upon Integration - the light returns, you can see it in their eyes, that spark.” Today, Smookler lives in Hopkinton, spending his professional time in Wellesley, Massachusetts - The Center for The New England Alphabiotic Association. APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 11 KIRK DOUGLAS Stars In ILLUSION A Powerful Performance, An Inspiring Film By Arielle Ford 12 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 AN INTERVIEW WITH KIRK DOUGLAS AND MICHAEL GOORJIAN elebrated actor Kirk Douglas never expected to still be acting at the age of eighty-eight, especially after suffering from a debilitating stroke in 1996, until he found an irresistible script called Illusion. Douglas, the star of more than eighty films including Spartacus, gives the performance of a lifetime in Illusion, a feature film that will be available during the month of May 2007 to members of The Spiritual Cinema Circle DVD club. C The award-winning Illusion tells the story of a once powerful but now lonely, aged and ailing film director, Donald Baines (Kirk Douglas), who finds himself in deep remorse after rejecting his only child, an illegitimate son named Christopher (Michael Goorjian). Late one night the legendary director is “awakened” by the ghost-like presence of his dear friend and editor, Stan (Ron Marasco) who has been dead for more than thirty-five years. Stan shows Baines three “minimovies” of his son’s life at times when the son is at a pivotal point. What the old man sees is the tragic life of the son he never claimed and the impact that his absence had in his life and on his ability to love. On his deathbed, Baines is given the gift of redemption and the opportunity to help Christopher who discovers that the only person who could change the story of his life was the father he never knew. extraordinary lifetime of achievement, Mr. Douglas has appeared in eighty-seven films, ten plays, written nine books, and has been married to his wife Anne for more than fifty years. In 1958, he broke the notorious Hollywood blacklist when he gave screen credit to blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo for the Spartacus screenplay. He was widely condemned for his decision at the time. It was not until thirty years later that the American Civil Liberties Union and the Writers Guild of America recognized his act as courageous. I realized there was a period in my life where maybe I was too wrapped up in making movies and that my son missed something. Doing Illusion reminded me, “Oh my God, before I die I want to do something for my kids.” This powerful and uplifting film is the creation of Michael Goorjian (Party of Five) who, as writer/director/co-star of Illusion, literally bet the farm to make this film. After winning the First Place Feature and Audience Choice Awards at the 2005 Spiritual Cinema Festival-At-Sea, he admitted, “I was, as they say in Poker, all in. I spent all of my money, that of my friends and family, and maxed our every credit card I could get my hands on to make this film.” Goorjianís compelling script combined with Douglas’ star power and entrancing performance make Illusion a movie that appeals to people from all walks of life. During his I recently had the opportunity to interview Kirk Douglas and Michael Goorjian about Illusion: Mr. Douglas, why did you say yes to Michael Goorjian to star in Illusion? KD: Michael came to me at the right time. Illusion appealed to me because I found something spiritual in it. The man I played was not a very good guy throughout his life but he felt the need to do something good before he died. He wanted to help the son that he had ignored. Playing this role was a great privilege. Michael, some would say that this film is about the Akashic records. Was that your intent? MG: The Akashic records became a metaphor through which to tell this story. Mr. Douglas is there a relationship between the role you played and your relationship with your father? KD: Of course. My father never gave me a pat on the back. He just couldn’t do it and that’s something that I missed all of my life. He was a Russian immigrant and it was difficult for him to express deep emotion. I always wanted to make sure I gave my children a pat on the back. I once asked my son Michael if I had been a good father. He took a long pause and finally said, “Ultimately you were a great father”. And I said, “Ultimately?” He said “yes.” I thought about that a lot…I even wrote about that pause in my book because it bothered me. Doing Illusion reminded me, “Oh my God, before I die I want to do something for my kids.” Michael you maxed out all your credit cards to make Illusion. Was it worth it? MG: Yeah, absolutely. A definite theme of this film is to follow your dreams and I figured that if I’m going to make pictures like this—I’d better live this way. KD: I think Michael should be proud of Illusion. To me it was a wonderful thing to work with so many young, talented people. It was rejuvenating to me. MG: Kirk was very inspiring to me. During our first month of rehearsals I realized that Kirk is just like me or any other actor, he loves acting. In Illusion we got a chance to really explore the deeper side of life. Mr. Douglas, you were Bar Mitzvahed a second time at age seventy-three. What drew you back to your religious and spiritual roots? KD: I don’t know if there is an “after life” but I thought it would make my mother happy. I’m not a very religious guy. I think there’s too much religion in the world. It doesn’t matter what religion you follow, if it makes you considerate of other people and you do unto others as you would have them do unto you, then that’s the right religion. Michael, tell me about your first meeting with Mr. Douglas. MG: I remember the first time I went to his house. He came up and looked at my chin and said, “It’ll do.” Everything happened pretty quickly after that. He read the script and agreed to star in it. Mr. Douglas, do you believe that certain things in life are pre-destined? 16 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 KD: I think it’s true. I recently celebrated my 90th birthday. When I was a kid I almost drown. I survived a helicopter crash, I have had operations on both knees, I’ve got a pacemaker and had a stroke and I’m still around. Sometimes I wonder why and I think it’s because I want to help younger people because, lets face it; the world is in a mess. My generation has not done a very good job and we are leaving a lot of problems for the younger generation to solve. Michael, what are you working on now? MG: I’m writing a new picture …it’s a love story that has a lot of metaphysical aspects to it. Mr. Douglas, what are you now working on? KD: Well, I just finished my ninth book. It’s called Let’s Face It: 90 Years of Living, Loving, and Learning. I dedicated it to my grandchildren. In this book, I share the mistakes that I have made, the things that I like and don’t like. Writing this book has been a catharsis. The book came out in March. Members of The Spiritual Cinema Circle will receive Illusion as part of the May, 2007 DVD collection. APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 17 april - MAy 2007 veritable plethora of potent planetary portents presently prevail, perhaps presaging a polarization of people’s priorities towards a more positive application of their potential, and precipitating, possibly, a palpable shift in their perception of man’s purpose on planet Earth. A To begin with, cosmic trickster, Mercury, conjuncts eccentric Uranus on the 1st, when sudden changes in plans could lead to a stimulating encounter. Research innovative ideas now that may be of use in a future venture. Review your natal horoscope, too, for timely insights. As the full moon in 13°Libra culminates on April 2nd, the need for self-expression, and “space” within relationships becomes paramount. Watch out for emotional pyrotechnics for a few days either side of this lunation. The solar-lunar axis links up with the ongoing SaturnNeptune opposition, forming a wonderfully symmetrical sky pattern called a mystic rectangle in this lunation chart. While Saturn sits alone in Leo, across the heavens, in zoadiacal Aquarius, Neptune is conjunct Mars and the major asteroid, Chiron—associated with healing old wounds, itself in trine to the full moon—which, in turn, is linked via sextile to Saturn. The sun for its part is in trine to Saturn and sextile to Chiron. These flowing connections, through this helpful aspect pattern, enable the release of the tremendous tensions brought about by the opposition between Saturn and the Neptune-Chiron conjunction, so that healing can begin within strained relationships and alliances. When giant Jupiter stations retrograde on April 5th (till August 6th) in 20° of Sagittarius, its expansive energies are intensified for several days, thus, tensions may rise over a difference in philosophy or values. Be prepared to exercise more patience in your dealings with others now, and over the next four months. In order to make progress during this time, be more tolerant of others’ beliefs and points of view. Resist a “holier than thou” attitude. Mars enters dreamy Pisces on Good Friday (April 6th) for a six-week sojourn. The red planet's presence in the realm of the unconscious can elicit strong emotional turbulence and sensitivity which could, temporarily, undermine one’s self-confidence; just remember...it’s all in the mind! It’s important not to repress feelings of anger or frustration that may well up now. Instead, channel them into creative activities. Express yourself musically, or through dance, painting, or photography. Above all, stay focused! The sun trines Saturn on the 8th and Jupiter on the 9th, the planets that rule big business and commerce. Constructive progress can be made towards career and educational goals, and advice on such matters from an authority figure could prove helpful. A desire to expand one’s horizons could manifest, perhaps as a longing for adventure. Plan a trip now. Review outstanding legal affairs or pending lawsuits under these favorable auspices. After Mercury flashes into the fiery realm of Aries (10th), be sure to note all the good, daring new ideas that come to mind. Communications are direct and to the point, thus, feathers are easily ruffled. Venus enters the intellectual realm of Gemini on April 11th, when for the next four weeks, emotions are subject to being cold-processed logically, via the mind, instead of percolating gently down to consciousness, filtered through one’s feelings. There’s often a greater willingness to travel in pursuit of pleasure and social activities during this transit, while wit, charm and the gentle art of conversation are definitely hip. 18 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 Down To Earth Astrology April’s new moon arrives on the 17th in 28°Aries. Last month’s vernal equinox theme of initiation and new beginnings continues. Consider launching new personal projects, once Saturn stations direct. Saturn, planet of discipline and karma, stations Direct on the 19th. What have you learned about your ability to express your creativity in the workplace during Saturn’s 41/2 months in review mode? How have you responded to the professional opportunities or challenges that have come your way? As the ringed planet gradually gathers forward momentum, tangible progress towards coveted career goals may become perceptible. The sun enters earthy Taurus on April 20th, placing personal values and material resources in the spotlight for the next month. Are the resources already at your disposal being fully utilized, or appreciated? Whenever possible, get out into nature and reconnect with Mother Earth—ground yourself, it’ll make you feel good! When Mercury joins the sun in sensible Taurus on the 27th, practical, down-to-earth thinking will prevail. Thoughts turn towards ways and means of generating income, and issues relating to one's personal values. Let your instincts guide you in financial matters. Mars is especially active at month’s end when it conjuncts Uranus (28th) and the moon's fateful north node, then square's Jupiter (30th). Expect the unexpected, as shocking revelations or events are possible around this period. Seize the initiative in business or career matters, though avoid acting rashly or rushing into new ventures without fully assessing all the ramifications. Beware of biting off more than you can chew, or taking too much for granted. Exercise both caution and moderation in all activities now. There are two full moons in May—The first is in Scorpio, early on the 2nd. This lunation forms a fixed sign grand cross/grand square pattern with the Saturn-Neptune opposition (Leo-Aquarius), energizing in people a strong sense of purpose, which may best be channeled into constructive outlets. It can also produce an unrelenting drive to acquire one's material desires. Although one’s intentions may be pure and honorable, the temptation to “sell out” for the sake of money or physical comforts is very strong. The trick to working with this combination of energies is to make the best use of the assets one already has, in an unselfish way, to not only further one’s own aims, but to help others, too. Passions and desires intensify now so don't allow a minor personal sleight, rebuff, or a challenge to your authority, to upset your equilibrium...chill out! Meditate on love. Mercury’s superior conjunction with the sun occurs late on the 2nd in 13° Taurus. The cosmic message here is to get in touch with your thoughts and feelings about things that are most important to you, personally. Be alert to fleeting opportunities to get your ideas noticed. Reevaluate a current fiscal arrangement and if necessary, renegotiate terms. Consider your motivations and intentions. The second in a series of three trines between Jupiter and Saturn (that began on March 16th) culminates early on the 6th. With Jupiter now in retrograde, review long-range goals or objectives, seek clarity of purpose or intent. If necessary, restructure business affairs to optimize your assets. Schedule a job interview now. The third and final trine in this sequence culminates on January 21st, 2008. Nurture key relationships during Venus’ transit of tropical Cancer from May 8th till June 5th, a period in which the mothering urge abounds. Brighten up or beautify your domestic environment, so that you feel nurtured within it. An energy-sapping square between the sun and Saturn becomes precise on the 9th. The natural vitality conferred by the sun is restricted by Saturn, and can create petty frustrations or obstacles to progress. Therefore a need may exist to exercise greater self-discipline in order to accomplish tasks. Indeed, responsibilities may seem particularly tiresome now, so meditate on something cheerful to lift your spirits. Jupiter is involved in yet another powerful planetary alignment during May, when it squares Uranus on the 10th, for the second of three such alignments this year. Be on your guard against impractical idealism, impulsiveness or a tendency to go overboard. The urge to travel or to escape the routine may strike without warning. Act with prudence and avoid unwise speculation. Be sure you can follow through on promises made now. A Momentous square between Mars and Pluto becomes precise on May 13th. Dynamic tension in the ethers is greatly heightened as these agents of change square off. A “hair-trigger” or “short fuse” tendency exists under this volatile aspect. Ambition is aroused, and power struggles or intimidation may prevail around this period. With positive use, however, the intense energies of this transit may, in some creative way, enable you to completely transform your world. Begin new projects when Mars enters Aries on the 15th till June 24th. The red planet in its fiery home sign engenders forceful selfexpression, heightened competitiveness, and a driving urge to accomplish something— anything! Be enterprising and keep physically active now. The New moon in Taurus on May 16th asks us to redefine our comfort zone, that is, how much or how little money or “stuff” do we actually need to feel comfortable? Consider what you value most. What is the prime motivating factor in your life at present? Saturn’s square to the lunation suggests that fear might be one possibility, although the prospect of financial gain and domestic security can help to allay such insecurities. Be honest about your needs now. Sometimes, what we think we want isn’t necessarily what we need. Remember, the truth can be liberating. The sun enters dualistic Gemini on the 21st, the realm of the mind, and mental activity increases. The thirst for knowledge and “fresh” input must somehow be assuaged. Begin a study program now, or try becoming more aware of your everyday environment, and how you interact with it. When mysterious Neptune, lord of the oceans, stations retrograde on the 24th, at 22°2'Aquarius, unresolved issues, neglected feelings, and emotional undercurrents—subconscious rumblings—from the past may surface from time to time over the next five months, to be reviewed and reevaluated for greater self-understanding. As if in tune with Neptune’s cycle, Mercury enters watery Cancer on the 28th for a protracted stay, due to its upcoming second retrograde phase of the year next month. Deeply embedded emotional patterns may surface—the kind that can trigger those “knee-jerk” reactions—so be ready to identify them if they occur. Thoughts now turn to domestic issues or property matters, affecting one's sense of security. May’s second full moon—a blue moon— culminates conjunct Jupiter in expansive Sagittarius late on the 31st, when it would be wise to make sure that your intentions are fully understood, especially by you! Be sensitive to the needs of others now, but above all, be sincere. Following is a general overview of how the planetary trends for April/May 2007 apply to each sun sign. APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 21 HOW T O KNOW GOD By Deepak Chopra, M.D. 22 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 believe that the experience of God is available to anyone regardless of their religious background or lack of it. The human nervous system is hardwired to experience God. God is defined as infinite intelligence and therefore infinite creativity. The universe is a manifestation of this infinite creativity. Whenever we create something new in our lives, we tap into the infinite mind. The miracles that are described in every spiritual tradition are manifestations of the creativity that we have access to when we tap into “the mind of God.” Einstein once said “I want to know how God thinks, everything else is a detail.” How do we know god? I All creative impulses share certain things in common. These include intended outcome, information gathering, incubation (as happens in meditation and prayer), insight, inspiration, implementation and integration. Creativity is a quantum leap in our consciousness. When we understand how miraculous healing occurs and why desires sometimes get fulfilled without any conscious effort on our part, then we have the ability to cocreate (with God) anything in our lives. Science has usually considered things like the remembrance of former lifetimes, synchronicities, telepathy, extra sensory perception, prophecy and remote healing, as anomalies. I believe if people understand the mechanics of such events, they too can consciously create them. There are three levels of reality - physical, mental and spiritual (also called material, quantum and virtual). Our biological responses to reality and the more sophisticated responses of the human nervous system allow us to tap into the infinite mind. These responses are as follows: Restful Awareness, which is being centered in the midst of chaos and confusion. THE INTUITIVE RESPONSE, which is using a non-rational, contextual, relational, holistic, nourishing intelligence that we all have, often described as a feeling from the heart or a gut feeling. THE CREATIVE RESPONSE, which is the ability to create something that never existed before but also the ability to co-create the events of our life. THE VISIONARY RESPONSE, which is the ability to access the mind of enlightened beings and also our spiritual inheritance. THE SACRED RESPONSE, which is to become one with God or Infinite Mind. As we become familiar with these higher states of consciousness our nervous system correspondingly changes so that we perceive things that we usually wouldn’t in our normal waking state of consciousness. We begin to understand what Mohammed may have experienced when the angel Gabriel visited him, what Moses may have heard when he confronted God, or how Jesus may have performed the thirty-five miracles described in the New Testament. To Know God is to empower oneself and to understand that a spark of the divinity that great prophets experienced inside themselves is also present in every being. When we pay attention to this spark and nurture it, it can become a brilliant flame that can transform our lives and all those who are affected by them. re we here by accident or is there a Creator or Divine Force that is behind our existence? Does God exist? Does God care about us? Where do we find God? A These questions and more are explored in the ground-breaking new DVD How to Know God, based on the inspirational, bestselling book by Deepak Chopra. Now spiritual seekers of all faiths can join Deepak as he traverses the secular and the sacred on the soul’s journey into the mystery of mysteries and the mind of God. In How to Know God, Deepak Chopra takes us on a breathtaking visual and philosophical journey where he investigates the meaning of creation, miracles, immortality and of existence itself. Uniquely blending science and philosophy, Chopra offers such an inspiring approach in spiritual thinking that any viewer, regardless of faith, can undergo a profound quest “to know God”. How to Know God is now available on DVD at: www.chopra.com or www.Amazon.com. $19.98. Running time: 67 minutes. In that time, a mere drop in the bucket of cosmic time, mankind managed to undo the profound and complex arrangement of his biosphere by providing abundant toxic waste to every corner of the globe. As pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, plastic residues, heavy metals and organic solvents accumulate one wonders what their ultimate health effect will be. There is now mounting scientific evidence that many of our chronic degenerative diseases such as arteriosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmune diseases and cancer have toxicity as an underlying 24 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 mechanism. Alleviating this toxic burden has now become the new modus operandi of the holistic community. Unfortunately, of this toxic burden heavy metals in particular are difficult to remove effectively and require special attention. Heavy metals are known to be involved in many of the same chronic degenerative diseases mentioned above. Their presence in the environment is ubiquitous. Mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, iron and aluminum are those most commonly encountered in toxic states. As a general rule, symptoms of heavy metal toxicity are nonspecific and are often mistaken for other ailments, frequently including fatigue, nauseau, dizziness, poor memory and headaches. In the setting of unexplained neurologic symptoms, the diagnosis of heavy metal toxicity becomes more tenable. Detoxifying heavy metals can be performed in several different ways. The following is a list of some of the more commonly used methods being used in this country at this time: Far Infrared Sauna - This method removes a wide variety of toxins incuding heavy metals by its ability to stimulate profuse sweating at a relatively low temperature of 120 degrees. It is well tolerated by the weak and elderly but must be used for extended periods at a frequency of 5x per week for a course of 6-12 months involving 1 hour sessions. Zeolite - This is a natural mineral consisting of activated lava which is a heavy metal binder or chelator. In liquid form it is safe enough to give to newborns as well as adults and is excreted via the urine. It has applications in many disease situations including autism. A typical course of treatment lasts 2-3 months. This product is a newcomer and enjoys limited clinical experience. Supplementation with heavy metals is unnecessary. IonCleanse - This is an electronic footbath system which removes heavy metals from the body via the process of reverse osmosis. Various colors and particles appear in the bath water making it possible to identify toxicity in specific organs. It is safe and gentle and only rarely requires supplementation with minerals. A course of treatment involves ten-twenty-hour sessions. Patients report a sense of lightness and a greater sense of well being afterwards. This treatment has found usefulness in the setting of arthritis, autism, gout, edema, chronic pain, chemotherapy and radiation therapy situations and cardiovascular disease. DMPS and DMSA - These two agents (dimercaptopropane sulfonic acid and dimercapotsuccinic acid) are powerful heavy metal chelators that have been used for over fifty years. Of the two, DMSA is felt to be somewhat safer. DMPS is given by IV infusion and DMSA by the oral route. They are both used in provoked urine testing for assessing total body burden of heavy metals. DMSA is the safer of the two and at present represents the gold standard of chelating agents. A course of treatment lasts one-two months. Rarely allergic problems, detoxification symptoms and augmentation of neurologic problems in autistic children are seen. Penicillamine - This is an old agent with a new use as an effective heavy metal chelator. Unlike the others it crosses the blood brain barrier and may be more effective for this reason. It is quite safe. It is being used in the same clinical situations as DMSA and may replace it in the future as the chelating agent of choice. Modified Citrus Pectin - This also represents an old agent with a new use in the chelation of heavy metals. As a natural product derived from orange and grapefruit rind it is safer and does not require the use of mineral supplements. Chelation is slower requiring a course of three months of treatment. Garlic, chlorella, kelp and cilantro can be added to the regimen to increase its effectiveness by binding heavy metals in the gastrointestinal tract. Early clinical experience suggests that this agent has great promise as a heavy metal chelator. Heavy metal testing is performed on hair, blood and urine. Hair analysis is the least accurate, the cheapest but easiest to perform and is most appropriate in the pediatric population. It reflects toxic exposure for the prior three months and can be influenced by hair treatments and hair products. Autistic children are known to be unable to excrete heavy metals into their hair and will have spuriously low readings. Chelation Therapy Each year over 500,000 Americans die of atherosclerosis our nationís number one killer. Conventional medical approaches to the problem often involve the use of medications and invasive procedures such as angioplasty and bypass surgery. Since the 1950’s EDTA chelation therapy has offered patients a safe and painless alternative. This procedure has been shown to effectively reverse symptoms of athersclerosis and correct the major underlying cause of arterial blockage. Chelation therapy is given as a series of twenty-thirty weekly infusions each lasting three hours. EDTA molecules in the infusion ‘grab’ the built up molecules of calcium and lead and other minerals from blood vessel walls and transport them to be eliminated by the kidneys. It is felt that the beneficial effects of chelation therapy are form Continued on Page 65 Blood analysis is intermediate in accuracy for heavy metal toxins with red blood cell analysis being somewhat better. It has been used for mass screening. Provoked urine testing is the most accurate and measures the total body burden of heavy metals which closely reflects the impact on the individualís health. Often it is the only test which shows the true level of metal toxicity. APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 25 Reiki Master Teacher John Harvey Gray turns 90 And He’s Busy With A Full Teaching Schedule! By Diane Stolar 26 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 he longest-practicing Reiki Master Teacher in the US will celebrate his ninetieth birthday on April 10th, two days after teaching another weekend course. Born in the Orient in 1917, John Harvey Gray is one of the original twenty-two instructors trained in Reiki (“ray-kee”) by Hawayo Takata, the woman who brought the ancient Japanese healing art to this country. The method was passed on to her by Chujiro Hayashi, and Hayashi was taught by Dr. Mikao Usui—the man credited with re-formulating the traditional techniques for contemporary application early in the 20th century. Reiki, which means Universal Life Force, has been used for centuries to restore balance and deliver healing in a non-invasive and relaxing manner. Elegant in its simplicity, yet profound in its impact, Gray explains, “It is easy both to learn and to use. Beginners with no background in the healing arts can be effective immediately without the need for extensive training, and can help anyone (including him or herself), animals, and even plants. Reiki also works at a distance.” T After spending his first ten years in the Far East and then moving to a town just south of San Francisco, John Harvey Gray attended Dartmouth College and discovered that he loved the winters. But many life chapters would intervene before he ultimately found his way back to New England. As an Army officer in World War II, Gray experienced the horror of war firsthand in the Pacific theater. He recalls, “I vowed to devote the rest of my life to peaceful means. During a remarkable spiritual awakening when I narrowly missed death at the Battle of Leyte, I became convinced that there were energy forces and types of com- munication that existed that had not yet been explored by Western science.” Following the war, Gray studied at the Harvard Business School and then returned to California, where he worked as a systems analyst for Bank of America, and later Stanford Research Institute and Bechtel. It was his abiding, private interest in how to heal suffering, however, that brought him together with his first wife, Beth. In 1973, she had started Trinity Metaphysical Center in Redwood, CA, which provided a forum for those involved in various alternative therapies and sacred traditions throughout Australia. Like the spinning of a prayer wheel sends blessings and prayers out into the world, Takata’s training propelled John on to the next stage of his journey. In 1979, he decided to devote himself entirely to healing through the practice of Reiki. He said goodbye to his career, kissed Beth goodbye (they have remained the closest of friends), left California, made his way to the East Coast, and has never looked back. John is credited with introducing Reiki to New England and has taught in all but two of the fifty states. In 1994 he was presented with the “Teacher of the Year” award “for a lifetime of spiritual guidance and exceptional teaching” by the Interface Foundation, Boston’s former premier training center of New Age and Healing Arts. John has presented over nine hundred Reiki workshops to more than fifteen thousand students. Among them are many doctors (including Christiane Northrup, M.D.), nurses, massage therapists, nuns and ministers, as well as lay people with no previous healing or spiritual training. While teaching a Reiki workshop in 1994, John met the woman who, two years later, would become his wife, coteacher, and life partner. Lourdes Gray quit her job in mortgage banking, sold her home in the DC suburbs, and moved to New Hampshire. the world. Healers from many cultures would give presentations and teach classes. It was during this period that the Grays met and received the Master Teacher training from Hawayo Takata. A Reiki healing group was formed at Trinity Center, the first of many to come which John oversaw, and some time later, Beth introduced Reiki to Lourdes is also a Reiki Master Teacher, certified by John, and has conducted over five hundred workshops alone or with him since 1996. She holds a doctorate in parapsychology and is a certified clinical hypnotherapist. She is also John’s successor in their Reiki lineage, the UsuiGray Integrated Reiki SystemTM. “Because Reiki is generally adminis- APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 27 tered by touch, people assume that it works exclusively on the physical body,” Lourdes says. “However, it also works to balance the emotional, the spiritual, and the mental dimensions of the person because the harmonizing energy of Reiki works with the entire organism.” “It stimulates the Relaxation Response (a stress reducer),” she continues. “It increases immunity, decreases pain and discomfort, reduces swelling and inflammation, as well as the formation of scar tissue, and accelerates the healing process for such things as cuts, bruises, and burns. As a Reiki practitioner, you have a first aid kit in your hands.” “I vowed to devote the rest of my life to peaceful means. During a remarkable spiritual awakening when I narrowly missed death at the Battle of Leyte, I became convinced that there were energy forces and types of communication that existed that had not yet been explored by Western science.” 28 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 A man of warmth, wit, thoughtfulness, and vitality, John is excited about the series of videos that he and Lourdes are putting together. There are instructional tapes demonstrating techniques that will enable the practitioner to become a more powerful channel, thus increasing the depth and effectiveness of Reiki treatments. Inspired by The Interior Castle, the masterwork of beloved 16th century Carmelite nun, Teresa of Ávila, Entering The Castle is a revolutionary text of spiritual direction on going within and exploring your soul. It is a clear and direct path to developing a contemporary spiritual practice. Using the mystical practices of prayer, contemplation, and self-inquiry, Entering The Castle provides a highly original path to self-knowledge. Inspired by Teresa’s imagery of the “interior castle,” Myss shows readers how to find life’s answers deep within their own souls by clearing away emotional debris to make way for God’s light. In the warm, inviting language of a trusted friend, Myss guides readers into seven different “mansions”—or levels of the soul—with individual rooms in which they uncover the different qualities of soul power: humilty, dignity, integrity, honor, wisdom, justice, harmony, and endurance. In the lower three rooms, Myss guides readers through the serious work of clearing the soul. Here you discover the “reptiles”—those interior sufferings of the mind, heart, and spirit that need to be faced and expelled. Through the door of humility, Myss guides you into the First Mansion— the mansion most connected to your external world. Here, you focus on how you create chaos and call it into your life to distract yourself and others from God’s guidance and true plan for you. You will awaken your soul and open yourself to uncovering and facing your struggles with power, control, and humility. 30 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 The Second Mansion illuminates the conflicts, darkness, and fears within your soul. Here readers face their demons, trap the reptiles that haunt them, and become free from the constraining pulls of their ego. In this mansion, Myss encourages readers to seek out new soul companions—people who share a belief in a higher purpose, and with whom they can share their new experiences of God. In the third and last of the lower level of the Castle, readers learn the limits of their intellectual conceptions of God and get beyond them to an expanded consciousness—embracing a universal or Christ Consciousness, an opening of the third eye—which receives information from a source that surpasses rational mind. Once in the upper level of the Castle, experiences of transcendence and divine contact with God begin as readers create an intimate connection with the universe. In the Fourth Mansion, prayer becomes the means through which love flows into your heart, through your soul, and out into the world to be of service to others. In the Fifth Mansion you dissolve into holiness and join with the divine in a radically intimate way. In the Sixth Mansion, Myss addresses the challenges that arise in the pursuit of God, including the criticism that may come from outside, from others, and for our need for praise along the way. Here, you open yourself to mystical encounters or visitations but, cautions Myss, “you do not expect them.” She encourages readers to stay mindful of their limitations and to stay humble. “You are a vessel,” she writes, “a conduit of grace, not a generator.” And yet, it is in the Sixth Mansion where readers may experience holy rapture—the experience of spontaneously being lifted into an altered state of consciousness, taken away from your body and senses, and becoming absorbed into the presence of God. Finally, in the Seventh Mansion, the soul ascends to a fearless bliss in which it is consciously united with the divine—a “mystical marriage” with God. It is here, writes Myss, “that you can no longer deny that you hear the voice of God.” To go within, to enter the Castle, is to uncover the different qualities of power that yur individual soul contains, to discover the soul’s own divine connection to God and to embody that qualities of light essential to an experience of God. A portal into a deeper experience of the divine, Entering The Castle is a comprehensive guidebook for your life’s journey—a journey into the center of your soul. There, peace, God, and a fearless bliss wait for you to discover them...and claim them as your own. How did you discover Teresa of Ávila, the extraordinary 16th century saint and Spanish mystic who inspired your new book? I knew about the life and work of Teresa of Ávila as the result of my studies in mysticism in college, actually in high school. I did not study her work as a high school student, of course, but all of us were certainly introduced to who she was because she is a great saint. So, the question is, more appropriately: How did St. Teresa and I rediscover each other recently? I have an educational institute called CMED (Caroline Myss Education) through which I teach two extensive educational programs that are divided into three seminars per year. During the second seminar of the course that was originally listed as “Intuition and Mysticism,” I had intended to teach a full day on the Christian mystics and a full day on the mystics from the Eastern and other traditions. I was going to begin with St. John of the Cross and his classic work, The Dark Night of the Soul, but I had grabbed— Q & A with Caroline Myss Author of ENTERING THE CASTLE: An Inner Path to God and Your Soul APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 31 by accident—St. Teresa’s great spiritual work, The Interior Castle. Since I was already at the podium, I thought, “It doesn’t matter, I’ll start with her.” As I introduced St. Teresa’s life to the audience, I felt myself surrounded in silence. I couldn’t hear my audience. It was as if I had entered a sound-proof room. And then I heard the words, “Follow me, daughter.” I knew instantly that St. Teresa was speaking to me. That was the beginning of our work together. We had an extremely subtle relationship; I knew she was there when I was in prayer, silence, and isolation. Her communications were also extremely subtle and rare. But like the most refined perfume, a small drop was sufficient to direct the outline, structure, and content of what I was writing. I then wove in my own observations about the contemporary spiritual struggle. The result is my new book, Entering The Castle. mary nurturing figure for the family. Exploring your interior life, by the way, does not in any way mean that you have the desire to leave or abandon your family. Yet, that is so often the fear about the deeper spiritual experience: that an individual cannot have both a rich interior life and a rich exterior life. That is simply not true. The ideal is to blend the two, and you can do it. You have to do it consciously and deliberately, but you can do it. But when you divide the two, when you try keeping the soul separated How do Teresa of Ávila’s Seven Mansions of prayer relate to the human energy system and the seven chakras that you have described in “Anatomy of the Spirit”? The soul is build upon a template of seven levels of power and that is what St. Teresa’s vision of the soul also embraced. Similar to the seven chakras is her division of the lower and upper mansions; the lower three mansions are the worker-bee, more earthbound mansions, and the upper mansions are devoted to more mystical awakenings. Aside from that, there are no other direct comparisons. Why are this medieval nun’s life, thoughts, and practices relevant to our lives and spiritual practices today? What makes a great spiritual teacher great? Why does a great spiritual teacher’s work last, and speak to us over the centuries? In Teresa’s case, it’s because she transcends the boundaries and limits of her own tradition and reaches the level of cosmic truth— truth that applies to the universal human experience. That is the nature of St. Teresa’s work. For example, she addresses the human struggle with power, our need for recognition, the delicate struggle with the control one’s family has over us and the need we have to break free in order to discover ourselves, our individuality and our own relationship with God. I don’t know any other spiritual teacher who articulates that need but I have met hundreds of people who struggle with this crisis—of feeling divided between their desire to explore their interior life and still remain a pri- 32 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 tive to our imagination. It works and that’s all that counts. The idea of crossing a drawbridge and closing that drawbridge to your outside world and finally being in an interior place where no one can find you and you are safe….finally…..trust me, that is a very useful, effective image. Using the metaphor of a journey into your interior Castle is very helpful in allowing you to get deeper into yourself, your spirit. It helps you set up a sacred place in which to meet God. The Castle represents your inner soul, your deeper soul, the part of you that requires prayer, reflection, and the pursuit of self-knowledge. It’s divinely seductive inner work. from your physical life, you are hurting yourself. A soul divided against itself creates endless suffering because you are always searching for where you belong in this world. In Entering The Castle, you use the same symbolic image of the castle that Teresa used to represent the soul. How can St. Teresa’s image of a medieval Castle with many mansions be effective today? The Castle was St. Teresa’s metaphor for the soul. She was from the Spanish town of Avila, which is a castle town. It is still today surrounded by medieval walls in the design of a castle. The image of a castle is positively seduc- You suggest that people are craving a breakthrough – a means to connect to a grounded, contemporary theology that they can practice every day. What are the means that we should use to do this? Prayer is the best way. You want to develop a devotion to contemplation and personal reflection. The Western person is fond of the God-in-her-mind, a rational concept of God that is accessible through books and seminars and discussion and perhaps group worship, such as church. But the type of breakthrough that I am referring to is a mystical breakthrough; that is, to move past a mental and behavioral relation- ship to God and into an experiential relationship with the Divine. That actually defines the mystic and the nature of a mystical experience – to experience the power and authority of the Divine with complete abandon as opposed to defining the nature of God through intellectual definition. It is ultimately bringing your interior life into everything you do, so that your interior life, spiritual life, and your external life in the world become congruent. What does it mean to be a “mystic without a monastery?” Mystics are people who are called to experience life at the visionary level, to experience the power of God as opposed to thinking about God or not thinking about God or keeping God and the spirit at arm’s length, which many people do because they fear it. Traditionally, mystics were found in monasteries or ashrams or, in even earlier centuries, living as recluses in the desert, like the Desert Fathers. Like all archetypes—or ways of being—those mystics served the world effectively at that time for their time. But times change and demand that all models and forms of human expression change their garb. For instance, years ago many Western women were repressed and had to “wait to be asked to dance,” so to speak, but that model no longer holds. And not so long ago, soldiers could not refuse to kill in a war, but now they can. Times change and ways of being in the world change to accommodate the changing times and changing patterns of thought, both outside and inside of ourselves. We are living at a time of great transformation. The spiritual awakening that began in the 1960’s needs now to mature to its next level, which is one of a deepening into a devotion to a mystical practice while remaining an effective force in the world. And by that I mean remaining in your skin, in your role as you are, who you are. Mystics knew how to channel grace through prayer and they knew the power of that. They knew how to receive guidance through reflection and contemplation; they knew how to share the gift of illumination with each other. These are great, great gifts of life and profound grace that we are capable of providing for each other and the world. And this is what it means to be a mystic without a monastery. You make a commitment to your own interior illumination, you connect with your soul and God, and through that discover the “sacred” part of your “contract” with this life—the true meaning of your highest potential. If we are craving spiritual experiences and encounters with God, why is it that we have such deep fears about the Divine and the ways that encountering God and our own Soul will change our life? You can thank the Catholic Church for the groundwork on that one, because it has done such an effective job of separating the authority of heaven and earth, body and soul, church and state. As a result, people are convinced that if they get too close to God – past the behavioral level of God, which is to say, “If I am good, I will be protected by God and that’s all I really want. I want my things to be safe, I want a good job, I want my family safe, I want my health, and I want to be able to call on a few miracles in an emergency. In exchange, I will, on occasion, go to public worship and behave myself (as best as I can), within reason, of course.” People are afraid – indeed, terrified – at some primal level that getting close to God will result in the loss of their earthly goods, their money, their sex life, and that it will end up causing them untold physical suffering. Certain saints and monastics did live lives of poverty and celibacy and, of course, had physical suffering. But as I point out in my book, sophisticated medicine, hospitals, and emergency rooms did not exist years ago. Everyone suffered from disease during the medieval days, not just those devoted to God. But those in the monasteries chose to respond to their illnesses as spiritual devotions and thus the association was born that God makes people suffer who enter into a deeper spiritual path. The fact is everyone suffered back then and people still suffer with illness and disease. Disease is a part of life as is all suffering. One need not be on a spiritual path to know what it is to experience depression, the loss of a partner, betrayal in life, or a devastating wipeout of one’s finances. Look at Enron. You think all those people who got betrayed by that company suffered because God wanted that to happen? That’s ridiculous. Actually, that’s just life. How do we avoid being spiritually isolated after experiencing an encounter with the Divine? Isolation is not necessarily a consequence of a mystical experience. Mystical isolation does not result in an individual feeling alone. That is the outsider looking in through a terrified APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 33 imagination. A mystical experience is a profound awakening to a cosmic truth in which that truth goes from being a mental idea to an animated force within your soul. Such an experience does not isolate you. It empowers you. A person can talk about healing in theory, for example, and he or she can even believe that people can be healed. And then there is the mystical experience of healing grace, in which you experience grace running through your veins and cell tissue. In that moment, you understand how it is that people are healed. That doesn’t isolate you. It empowers you and fills you with a depth of compassion that you did not know you were capable of feeling for another person. You need a devoted prayer life to cope with the growing requests for help that come to you after that. Prayer is your support mechanism—not petition prayer, not asking for stuff— mystical prayer. I teach that in my book and in my workshops. Why is this “spiritual life crisis” unique to this era of human evolution? But the ingredients of today make our challenges unrivaled; and thus we are in a Mystical Renaissance. Three factors come to mind. First, time has become the servant to timelessness; that is, we have entered into the era of timelessness. We are now linked to the internet, to systems of communication that are essentially instantaneous – timeless. And people are addicted to this timelessness medium. Timelessness is a characteristic of their interior self. Secondly, the speed of change has increased. All change is now universal. A change in Iraq affects the whole as does a change in California or Washington or North Korea. Instantly, the whole of the earth is affected. All news on the internet affects the whole. We have never been affected by the whole of the world instantaneously before. And third, we have evolved into the body/mind/spirit template, although most people only pull out that template at the doctor’s office and remain unaware the rest of the time that they are, indeed, a walkingtalking-functioning multi-dimensional creature of consciousness. Yet, you are exactly that, a multi-sensory human being who is now fully connected to a global system of information and energetic data who, for the most part, lives unaware of the impact all of that information has upon you. The practices so necessary for inner balance are completing missing, amid all of this energetic chaos – practices such as reflection and contemplation. Instead, we turn to therapy and tranquilizers. Reflection is the practice of taking time to reflect upon the information that has come into your body, your mind, your soul that day and how it has merged with your mind and your soul. How are you being affected by the new thoughts that have come to you that day? And how are your choices affecting you and the people around you? Are you able to live with your choices? Do they have integrity? Are they honorable? Did you take the time to pray before you made your significant decisions? And if you say that you didn’t have time to pray before significant decisions, what does that tell you about your inner life and how you maintain your spiritual devotion and your priorities with God? It says that you don’t take your interior life seriously at all. God, for you, is a crisis operation, a superstitious force to turn to when things are confusing. God is a panic button and nothing more. Do you have dry hair or skin? You might have blood deficiency in Chinese medicine terms; it’s similar to the Western term of anemia. Based on the statistics of 2004 from the US Census Bureau and International Data Base, 3.5million Americans have been diagnosed with anemia, while many others have normal laboratory testing they may still have blood deficient signs. Anemia is a condition in which there is reduced delivery of oxygen to the tissue of the body leading to fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, pale skin (lips, lining of the eyelids, nail beds and palms), insomnia, scanty or no period, or decreased appetite. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency which leads to anemia worldwide, even in the United States. Iron deficiency can be caused by lack of iron in the daily meal, an inability to absorb iron, pregnancy, or blood loss, i.e.: heavy period, or Gastrointestinal bleeding. How do you treat iron deficiency anemia? First, understand the cause of your iron deficiency by visiting your health care provider to see if it is a bleeding disorder, or lack of food source or mal-absorption, which can be managed through careful meal selections or using herbs. Iron is more easily absorbed if it comes from animal source, and the iron availability is less if its source is plant or fortification. It is far better to consume iron rich foods and Chinese medicinal herbs than to take iron supplements. Food is more enjoyable and easier for the body to assimilate, rather than taking concentrated iron pills, which can lead to stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, GENERAL GUIDELINES • Avoid processed foods, which are harder to digest and the good nutrients are harder to be absorbed. • Take food containing Vitamin C along with the meal to help with iron absorption, for example: citrus fruits, or tomato. • Avoid drinking caffeinecontaining beverages with the meal, such as coffee, tea, or dark colored soft drinks. Caffeine can inhibit the absorption of iron. • Soups and stews are easy for the stomach to digest, and iron pots can add iron to foods. • Avoid eating large amounts of dairy with a meal, because calcium can inhibit iron absorption. Don’t take your iron supplement and calcium supplement at the same time! constipation, or diarrhea in some people. Others could be allergic to the iron binder from the supplement, i.e.: the sulfate group, and overdosing iron supplements can be fatal. Foods that are high in iron: meat, poultry, fish, egg, whole grains, and iron-fortified foods such as cereals. NON-VEGETARIANS • Select good quality tender meat, poultry or fish. • Avoid deep fry cooking method and overcooking. • Avoid eating more than 5oz at one sitting. VEGETARIANS • Utilize the legumes family regularly i.e.: black beans, chickpeas, kidney beans, lima beans, or lentils. Don’t forget to add tomato or tomato sauce to help you absorb the iron. Continued on page 61 38 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 By Gloria Banou Bates PAST FEAR TO FREEDOM ow often we have heard the statement “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” President Franklin Delano Roosevelt spoke these words in his first inaugural address, and they have become a rallying cry for many people who face challenge and difficulty. President Roosevelt’s description of fear as “nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes efforts to convert retreat into advance” is less well known, but it describes what most of us experience when we feel threatened, overwhelmed, or outdone by circumstances in our lives. This is the way some problems hit us. Like deer in the headlights, we become blinded by an event or condition, unable to think or to respond clearly. The situation appears so overwhelming we don’t know what to do. We can’t look beyond the problem or the challenge because it shuts out everything else in our vision. In these situations, fear can take hold of us, even though we may follow a regular spiritual practice. What can we do when we lose sight for that blinding moment? Emmet Fox, the influential and respected New Thought writer and teacher, said “Let us not be paralyzed with fear. Let us be transformed with the free-flowing energy of Spirit.” H Unity teachings remind us that we are one with Divine Spirit, and because of that oneness we have unlimited access to God. Charles Fillmore, the co-founder of Unity, wrote “When we can blend and merge our mind with God Mind, the way is open for the Lord to glorify us and to lift us into a higher, purer, more spiritual state.” In times of challenge, we regain clear vision by remembering who we are, and focusing on our identity as children of God. The loving, creative energy of God is always present to support the highest good for every single one of us. Sometimes situations and circumstances may not appear to be what we think is best, but when we let go, believe, and trust in the presence and power of Divine Spirit in our lives, we become aware of divine order at work for the best for us and for our loved ones. We see and understand the presence and power of God at work in our lives through meditation and prayer, letting go and letting God work around, through, and with us in divine partnership. How much more powerful that energy becomes when we are in a community of spirit with others! We receive the gift of connection with those who have walked a similar path, experienced similar challenges, and felt a similar divine connection with God. This gift is available to you each Sunday at Christ Church Unity in Brookline, MA. Where two or more are gathered in the presence and power of Divine Spirit, the steps we take are made side by side with others on the path to spiritual fulfillment. We constantly walk through a world that at any moment can bring challenges. It is up to us to overcome the paralyzing sensation of fear and of separation from God. We can choose to believe in our oneness with God, and in God’s presence in any and all circumstances. We can reach out to others in a community of spirit, knowing that we are all one in God, never apart or alone. Whether the challenges you face are large or small, we invite you to step past fear into freedom and join us each Sunday for the spiritual reinforcement of community at Christ Church Unity in Brookline. Share in spiritual preparation for the week ahead with the inspirational lessons of Daily Word each Sunday morning at 10:00 AM. Share in the experience of music, meditation, and words to help you throughout the next seven days at the worship service each Sunday morning at 11:00 AM. www.unityboston.org. APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 39 VI S I O N By Rosemary Gaddum Gordon D.B.O., M.A. TIPS VISUAL ILLUSIONS How They Help Us To See ave you ever noticed how large the moon looks when it rises and how it seems to shrink as it climbs higher into the sky? As the moon passes through the heavens, it seems to start off close to us, go further away and then come back to being close to us again. In fact, the moon’s distance away from the earth during one diurnal cycle is almost constant. It is the eye-brain connection that causes us to think that it changes size, which in turn leads us to think it moves further away from us when it is at it’s zenith. Our understanding of what we see is learned. As we begin to crawl around, we learn how far away things are and how they appear to get larger as we approach. We use this knowledge all the time. It helps us know the distance and speed of an approaching vehicle, so we know when it’s safe to cross the road. When we see the moon, which is actually too far away and too large for our experience to fathom, our eyes are deceived and we are confused. If you did the exercise I suggested last month and held your finger up in front of something in the distance, you may have been confused to notice some doubling of objects. When our eyes are working well together and we look at an object, we see two of any object that is in front of or behind the one we’re looking at. Surprisingly, seeing double sometimes shows us we have normal vision. It shows that both the eyes are switched on at the same time and that we have some awareness of the peripheral field. (We’ll explore the peripheral field in the next issue.) H 40 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 If you hold your finger up in front of a distant object, look at the finger and move it towards you, you will notice that the two objects in the distance will appear to move. The same is true if you look at the distant object and move your finger back and forth. This is another clue that helps the brain know how fast something is moving. A good use of the doubling illusion is if you practice archery. Instead of closing one eye to aim, look at the target and move the arrow so you see the bull’s eye centered between the two illusory arrowheads. You’ll be right on target. If you have trouble seeing double in this way, it usually means that one of your eyes is switched off. You can explore which eye it is by covering and uncovering each one and noticing what happens. To help switch that eye back on, rest your eyes first with palming. (Cover your closed eyes with your hands, without touching them, and relax your mind.) Next cover the stronger eye for thirty seconds while you look at your finger and see the background, then, when you remove the cover see if you can see the doubling. Because seeing these illusions can be confusing, we usually ignore them. If, however, you practice them consciously they can help strengthen the way your eyes work together and how your brain calculates speed, size, distance and location of things in the world. Y Custom Built Organic Overstuffed Sectional APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 41 ajor technological and humanistic developments are converging as a result of globalization. This holistic blending of the East and the West is making the scientific exploration of certain spiritual practices, which are aimed at creating peace, a viable pursuit. With a rigorous Western approach to practical application of Eastern wisdom, world peace may well be within our reach. M functional cognitive and decisionmaking processes.” This article first discusses the current state of societal disharmony from an unusual perspective, one that considers the underlying subjective issues of conflict. Next it addresses how the science of consciousness is transforming our worldview. Then it presents how an East-West convergence of science, technology and spiritually gives humanity an unprecedented opportunity to bring sustainable peace to our communities and to the world. If a sustainable approach to peace is possible, it must alleviate this tension in a way that feels personal to each individual, yet is not externally imposed. When this is accomplished, cognitive and decision-making processes naturally tend toward more harmonious outcomes. A Different Model of Societal Disharmony The peace-through-strength approach, both in our communities and on the world scene, continually demonstrates its limitations. Every “victory” contains the seeds of fear, mistrust and hostility. Societal tension underlies attempts at reconciliation, rendering them temporary at best. A more fundamental and sustainable approach to societal harmony is apparently needed. One approach is to examine the underlying subjective issues of conflict, a common one being tension or stress. As R.K White argues in Fearful Warriors: “Traditional approaches to peace…cannot be effective in the absence of concurrent measures to drastically reduce tension. High levels of tension or stress directly motivate violence aimed at removing perceived injustices, threats or blocks to progress….they may also indirectly breed misperceptions, fear, and dys42 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 Consider this on a personal level. Recall a circumstance between you and a spouse, coworker or business partner. Your stress may have distorted your perception of the situation and ability to make thoughtful, creative, harmonious decisions. Now multiply this stressful influence times a hundred or thousands, as is the case in many communities around the world. Examining human consciousness as it relates to peaceful relations seems as relevant as any externally motivated means of resolving conflicts. In fact, as consciousness researcher, David Orme-Johnson points out, “The scientific exploration of consciousness is critical to our understanding of the natural world and for solving the recalcitrant problems of humankind, which are all ultimately problems of mind.” Once we give consciousness and its practical application equal footing with machines, progress and commerce, we have a chance at uniting three major developments that have resulted from advancing technology and globalization. They are: 1) collective mind over matter, 2) a humanbased peace technology, and 3) massive global collaboration. As Mass Mind Moves, So Does Matter Imagine going to Las Vegas and playing craps. Instead of everyone at the table hoping for a different roll of the dice, you all agree what number you want to see. Believe it or not, this might have a subtle influence on the probability of those intended numbers occurring. This ability to influence random events has been studied for over seventy-five years, according to Dean Radin, PhD, author of Entangled Minds and The Conscious Universe. Now imagine having dozens of computers spread around the world whose job it is to roll electronic dice continuously, creating a steady stream of random events. Do you think that a group of people around the world could meditate on becoming more coherent as a group, calming themselves very deeply without falling asleep, and that human coherence could make those random dice-rolls not so random? What would you say if it doesn’t even require that much intention; that all it takes is an event that captures the collective attention, like the death of Princess Diana, a tsunami disaster broadcast on every TV station, or the tragedy of September 11, 2001? Dr. Roger Nelson, retired Princeton University professor, heads the Global Consciousness Project. [noosphere.princeton.edu]. Since 1998 this project has been running a network of random event generators distributed around the world. When actual events of world interest happen, a change of the random numbers to nonrandom occurs, which cannot be explained through traditional physics. Over two hundred events have been evaluated, from natural disasters to the death of celebrities to global meditations, and have shown that as humans become more coherent, it appears that matter does too, with odds against this phenomenon occurring by chance at over 1,000,000 to 1. As extraordinary as these consciousness field effects are, something even more interesting happens when we study what occurs to other humans under special cases of intentional group coherence. Created by ancient Rishis (sages) from the seed mantras of the Vedas, the sounds are designed to resonate with your chakras to help move the energy 48 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 up your spine. Then these sounds, like Om Namah Shivaya or Sita Ram, are put to a simple melody. Kirtan is a simple practice. We sing the kirtan, call and response style, over and over, with more and more Bhava (spiritual emotion) until the singers enter higher planes of consciousness. The wonderful thing about Kirtan is that it is fun. It just flows from everyone’s connection to music. Even those who feel they do not have a good voice discover themselves singing on pitch, in time. It is an excellent way to discover your true voice, singing these Sanskrit seed mantras. Shubalananda (Larry Kopp) has been leading Kirtan for many years, having studied with Neem Karoli Baba, Sathya Sai Baba, Karunamayi, and currently, with Shree Maa. His guitar and harmonium playing and his voice of experience gives his Kirtan a power that is shared with all who join him. APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 49 T HEATER W ORKSHOP B O S T O N, IN C. O M E G A T HEATER Celebrating 40 Years of ARTISTIC HEALING Work in the Greater Boston Community I ncorporated in 1967, initially in residence at the Arlington Street Church and then the first theater in residence at the Boston Center for the Arts, Omega Theater spawned multiple acting companies including Om Theater, The Tribal Players, Reality Theater, Omega Arts Center and Omega Theater. Numerous grants were received from The Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanity, The National Endowment for the Arts as well as several corporate, foundation and other government grants. Omega Theater is currently located in Boston in Jamaica Plain. It began as a pioneer experimental theater company directed by Co-Founders and Artistic Directors, Julie Portman and Saphira Barbara Linden, with a creative vision and energy that has contributed to its evolution and endurance for forty years. Numerous theater artists have contributed to the diverse dramatic forms brought to many multi-cultural audiences including artists, students, teachers, clergy, families and corporations who have benefited from not only the creative potential but the educational and therapeutic potential of theater as well. The theater’s commitment has broadened to training professionals in the art of theater and drama for personal, professional and global transformation. Today, Omega Theater continues to not only produce healing and educational plays, but also runs the Omega Transpersonal Drama Therapy Certificate Program under the direction of Saphira Linden. Transpersonal Drama Therapy utilizes the embodied arts in the recovery from all forms of abuse, dysfunctional relationships, and associated limitations acquired from personal history toward an experience of being fully present and whole. From this consciousness, transpersonal drama therapy offers creative experiences through which individuals develop an awareness of their soul’s journey and potential service to expanding human consciousness. The importance of an embodied creative arts therapy approach is based upon the premise that transformation toward wholeness can more easily occur through the experience of working with different artistic forms in the service of healing. 50 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 The next drama therapy training is June 7-17 2007, held at their studio in Jamaica Plain. In the past, Omega Theater has produced original plays such as Riot, Tribe, Creation, Sunsong, Awakening, The Finding Place, Eartheart and the Cosmic Celebration. The theater’s most recent play, Motherblood, created by Saphira Linden and Susan Nisenbaum portrays a powerful encounter between an Israeli and a Palestinian mother, both of whom lost a child in the tragedy of war. Motherblood evolves with the complex issues and feelings that are challenging Israelis and Palestinians today. Motherblood was created to be a powerful educational vehicle for learning about the major issues in the Middle East conflict from both the Israeli and Palestinian perspectives. The production staff has been working with communities engaging synagogues, churches, mosques, high schools, colleges and community groups to work together to co-sponsor and host together the performance. The two playwright-actresses were motivated to write Motherblood by the urgency of the Middle East crisis. They wanted to use their gifts as theater artists, therapists and educators to offer a meaningful creative and educational experience that would catalyze the audiences’ motivation to become involved in envisioning possibilities for peace. Rolf, Ph.D., in the 1940's, which frees, releases and reshapes the body to bring it towards greater balance and verticality. Through Rolfing©, body structure is restored and improved, stress is reduced, and movement becomes more fluid, efficient, and graceful. Freedom and range of movement are enhanced, and breathing becomes fuller and easier. As out of balance parts of the body are brought into alignment, chronic aches and pains often disappear. Gravity becomes an ally, rather than an enemy; it is no longer an effort to hold oneself up. During a reading, he communicates telepathically with his numerous angels and spirit guides who read and interpret the client’s aura (the spiritual light surrounding one’s physical body). Ross also communicates with the client’s own angels and spirit guides (most people have several of each). These angels and spirit guides then convey the information that is most needed or desired by the client. All of Ross’s readings are positive and constructive in nature. In addition to answering all of your personal questions pertaining to love, health, relationships, soul mates, business, career, relocation, dream interpretation, parents, children, and pets, he covers topics as diverse as: your life’s purpose, your undiscovered talents, as well as your past incarnations and how they relate to this life. Ross can also help you to identify and communicate with your own guardian angels and spirit guides. Ross also offers workshops in psychic development and angel communication. Ross is available for individual readings in person or over the phone. Iron deficiency takes up to three to six months to improve depending on its severity and cause(s). If the iron deficiency symptoms does not improve after following the above rules, the next step would be adding Chinese medicinal herbs into your daily meals, and make sure you consult with an herbalist; not all blood deficiencies are the same. Chinese herbal medicine has over five thousand years of history and is derived from natural sources. Natural sources are easier for the body to assimilate. Four-Substance Decoction (Si Wu Tang) is the most basic and the sim- plest Chinese classic herbal formula for blood deficiency. This formula has only four ingredients: Rehmanniae Glutinosae Conquitae, Paeoniae Lactiflorae, Angelicae Sinensis, and Ligustici Chuanxiong, and has nearly one thousand years of clinical application. In addition, Rehmanniae and Angelicae Sinensis are rich in iron. This formula helps to nourish the blood, promotes better blood circulation, and enables the body to function more efficiently. Many iron deficient people have a sluggish digestive system. Some herbs, such as Fructus Amomi, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, good old ginger, or Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, which have been proven to promote better flow of digestive functions, can be used to correct this condition. Others can have weak digestive systems and will require energy boosting herbs like Astragalus Membranacei, Ginseng, Jujubae, or Liqorice. There are also many other classic formulae for improving digestion, boosting energy, and nourishing blood. In addition to iron rich foods and herbs, regular daily exercises or activities are also very important. Activities like walking, swimming, yoga, or Tai ji/Qigong help better circulation of energy and blood, which in turn can improve metabolism, strengthen the gastrointestinal system and lead to a better digestion and absorption of iron. APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 61 Convergence, Continued from page 42 from the East isn’t curry spice; it’s a phenomenon referred to as “a fourth state of consciousness.” The first three you are familiar with: 1) wakefulness, 2) dreaming while you sleep; and 3) deep sleep. The fourth state, according to Robert M. Oates in Permanent Peace, seems to be a combination of two seemingly opposed human states: minimum physical-mental arousal and maximum awareness. The former is akin to deep sleep, where the body and nervous system are minimally aroused, with no sensory or mental activity. The latter is a rarified, gentle type of awareness that transcends normal wakefulness–a pure, self-referral type of awareness– awareness circling back to become aware of itself…awareness of awareness, so to speak. While this fourth state of consciousness is uncommon, it is a natural human state. It has been studied extensively for its remarkably positive effects on human health and wellbeing. In this state, breath slows down, heart rate decelerates, skin conductance increases (the opposite of the Fight or Flight response), brain functioning become more coherent from left to right and front to back, as indicated by the EEG). The method used to experience this fourth state of consciousness is an inner practice called transcendental meditation (TM). The full complex of effects as described above does not seem to be achieved with most other forms of skilled relaxation or meditation. TM comes from the eastern Vedic tradition. It is the oldest continuous system of human knowledge, called the Perennial Philosophy. TM is not a religion, does not involve contemplation about religious or secular ideas, nor does it involve concentration, which is characteristic of some meditation and religious practices. It is a simple, inner practice that allows the active mind to settle to its silent selfreferral state. 62 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 The reason TM is being highlighted here is because it is has been the subject of most social studies, and has a well developed theory of consciousness and its individual and collective effects. These studies tested the hypothesis that societal stress underlies violence, aggression and conflict, which can be reduced by inducing into the community a fundamental calming and harmonizing influence. Remember the Global Consciousness Project where groups of people appear to influence a change of random numbers to non-random? Considering this, it’s not too far fetched that humans can affect other humans to behave in a more coherent, harmonious way as well…by becoming more coherent and harmonious within themselves. and wives, teachers, children, virtually every segment of a society, all seems to be influenced in a way to be more harmonious within themselves between each other and their environment. Think of what could be accomplished if citizens in these communities would form similar peace-creating groups and thus provide this effect on a continuous basis. The future of neighborhood crime prevention programs should include similar peacecreating group activities. These activities may include TM but studies currently underway may show other types of activities can be effective. The table below summarizes three studies that demonstrated significantly reduced crime in the capital regions of the Philippines, the United States and India. A time series analysis showed that this drop was not expected based on prior causative factors, and could not be accounted for by weather, seasonal cycles or change in police coverage. Because two of the three groups were composed of Westerners visiting Asian cities, these studies also demonstrated that peace-creating groups apparently operate on a fundamental level that transcends political, cultural or ethnic differences. Since the late 1970s, studies of large peace-creating groups of TM practitioners have consistently shown a reduction of violent crime and terrorism. They come to a city, gather in large groups for a period of weeks or months, and a significant drop in crime is subsequently observed below pre-existing levels. These groups, numbering in the hundreds to thousands, seem to create a calming and harmonizing effect in the surrounding communities. What is Decreased Crime in the Capital Regions of the particularly Philippines, the United States, and India encouraging in these studies is that violent crime isn’t the only aspect positively influenced; it appears that all members of a community, including policy makers, social architects, police officers, Source: www.permanentpeace.org with permission. husbands The remarkable effects demonstrated by the fifty-plus well-controlled TM social studies is not outside the realm of your own personal experience, you may have just never considered it this way. Imagine going to a gathering of friends who respect you, desire your company, and are calm and enjoying themselves. This gathering would feel welcoming and you’d be more likely to have a relaxed, enjoyable time. You’d feel confident, creative and resourceful. You’d feel a harmony with your friends that would transcend inevitable differences. Contrast this with attending a court hearing with obvious interpersonal polarities, skilled adversaries and ill intentions. In the presence of this field of tension and conflict, you may feel uneasy, strained, mentally agitated, uncreative, perhaps even cognitively impaired, and not in the best decision-making mode. Both scenarios involve a localized consciousnesses field that you influence and that influences you…a very common human experience. today’s highly connected world is something dramatically different than we’re used to. It is about deep changes in the structure of our society and economy that are touching virtually every aspect of human affairs. As Dan Tapscott says in Wikinomics, How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything, “Billions of connected people can now actively participate in innovation, wealth creation and social development in ways we once only dreamed of. And when these masses of people collaborate they collectively advance the arts, culture, science education, government and the economy in surprising ways…discovering the true dividends of collective capability and genius. These changes are ushering us toward a world where knowledge, power and productive capability will be more dispersed than at any time in our history—a world where value creation will be fast, fluid and persistently disruptive.” The power to add immense value to Mainstream science is just now recognizing this consciousness field. It’s been there all along, though, harboring our hopes, frustrations, fears, joys, sorrows…and intentions. While a handful of very powerful people may be able to influence a nation for its betterment or detriment through political, economic or violent means, the mass of people connected through technology can now bring something much more rewarding to life. This brings up the final development. Massive Global Collaboration Massive collaboration in APRIL / MAY 2007 EARTH STAR 63 humanity and disrupt the cycle of conflict, violence and societal disharmony has been demonstrated repeatedly by the two previously mentioned developments. Now, combined with the proliferation of massive collaboration technologies – made evident by the large scale successes of MySpace, YouTube, Second Life and Wikipedia – these two social endeavors can be scientifically explored to discover their ability to impact social harmony. Imagine a massive global collaborative of peace-creating groups whose purpose is social harmony, comprised of members from every religion, meditation practice and indigenous group. They would come together locally and globally, learn how to apply the findings of prior social studies, and develop an open-source technology that val- idated the social harmonizing effects of their combined efforts. One of the products of their collaboration would be a “social harmony index” reflective of the value in social capital gained by their efforts. They would regularly monitor indicators of social harmony and coherence, like the level and severity of emergency calls, crime statistics, socially responsible investing, and other real-time data sources. They would then feed that composite index back to participating groups over mobile phones, podcasts, television, radio and the Internet. This index would serve as a social coherence feedback signal that would help integrate all the diverse tendencies in society for a mutually enhancing common good. This will educate and empower ever-larger numbers of people to participate in the most effective peace-making program ever developed. One that puts the power of peace in the hands of those who benefit most: the individual. This would be ideal for the Millennium Project of the United Nations University and incorporated in their annual State of the Future publication. When this is done, peace may well be within our reach, and science can help us get there. Joseph R. Giove is founder and Executive Director of CommonPassion.org, a nonprofit, nonsectarian, educational and scientific consortium committed to uniting collective human intention and technology to promote social harmony: www.CommonPassion.org. POINTS FOR THE CLASSROOM (send comments to [email protected]) n 2015, will win-win approaches to conflict resolution – between nations, political factions, socioeconomic groups, ethnic groups, etc. – be more prevalent than the “zero-sum” approach that is so pervasive today? I There are several sources of dissatisfaction in the world, and various forecasts indicate that some will get worse. Some discontents result in interest-based conflict – for example, competition for resources (food, water, energy, etc.) and living space. Other stressors, especially in this era of rapid change, include deculturation, loss of one’s way of life, and loss of one’s sense of stability and identity. This, in turn, typically leads to overidentification with one’s “tribe” or ethnic group in a binary “us-them” sense that sows the seeds of value-based conflict – sometimes reinforced by a sense of past injustices and a perceived need for redress. Superimposed on this backdrop is the tendency of those who feel marginalized to find a sense of identity in street gangs, terrorist groups, etc. What promise does the human-based peace 64 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 technology presented in this article hold for mitigating both interest-based and identity-based conflict? Does peace need to begin at the individual level? Why or why not? Some present-day societies and cultures value constant stimulation, diversion, and a fast pace of life – all now facilitated by IT as the world becomes more wired and people feel increasing pressures to stay “plugged in.” Taken to excess, this lifestyle is the very antithesis of “down time” and the regular practice of meditation and contemplation. At the same time, there is increasing dissatisfaction with the fast pace of life or socalled “rat race.” Considering all of these factors, will the human-based peace technology discussed in this article (or something similar) become more commonplace in Western cultures in 2015 – or will the fast pace of life prevail? Chelation, Continued from page 25 disease and lupus and scleroderma. At the D’Arcy Wellness Center chelation therapy is always monitored by a licensed physician and is administered according to protocols established by the American College for the Advancement of Medicine. Full benefits are usually seen within a few months of treatment. This therapy, which is FDA approved for the removal of lead, is used in a program that includes a comprehensive examination, lab tests, the use of vitamins, stress reduction and lifestyle changes. In conclusion, we are all affected by toxins in our environment. Many of us seek to lower our exposure by adopting sensible dietary habits and lifestyle. Avoiding mercury amalgams and demanding preservative free vaccines for our children plays a part, but if every taxpayer in America donated fifty dollars of their federal tax dollars to defray the cost to farmers of converting to organic farming, within one generation most chronic degenerative diseases could be eliminated. the removal of toxic metallic catalysts that cause free radical proliferation and much of the damage in atherosclerosis and other chronic degenerative diseases. By reversing plaque build up in arteries chelation therapy is able to restore circulation to all tissues of the body. Since its inception over one million treatments administered in the U.S. since the 1950’s have documented the safety and effectiveness of this procedure and a wealth of research and clinical experience have shown it to be successful in eighty-five percent of patients for cardiovascular disease. Many believe it is far better than drugs and substantially safer than bypass surgery or angioplasty. Chelation ther- apy is one of the safest medical procedures and often safer than many other prescription medications. The risk of significant side effects is extremely low. Its crystal system is orthorhombic and it generally forms in short compact prisms which are vertically striated Its olive to lime green color is caused by iron. The name Peridot is of Greek origin, but the original meaning is not known. Chrysolite is a name sometimes used to describe yellowgreen Peridot, and this name is derived from the Greek words meaning ‘gold’ and ‘stone.’ For three thousand years, Peridot has been gathered and mined on the inhospitable Egyptian Island of Zaghargad. The name Zagbargad is Arabic for Olivine, or Peridot. The Egyptians made Peridot beads some 2,500 years ago. It was also used for rings and other jewelry in Greece and Rome in the third and fourth centuries. In the i8oos, Peridot was a popular gemstone in the United States and Europe. Important sources of Peridot are in Pakistan, Burma, Australia, Brazil, South Africa and the United States. Since ancient times, Peridot was viewed as a symbol of the sun, and in Greece it was believed to confer the energy of royalty to the wearer. It was sometimes worn as a protection against evil spirits, and in thirteenth century England wearing a Peridot engraved with the symbol of a torchbearer was 66 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2007 believed to bring wealth. Interestingly, the idea of Peridot as a stone of prosperity has resurfaced in present-day intuitive information. These stones are little green nuggets of positive power. Their vibration brings an inner sense of warmth and wellbeing, like sunshine on a spring day. Peridots help one activate and harmonize the third and fourth chakras, creating an integration of Love and Will. They can assist us in having the courage to act out our heart’s desires, and to be generous to others, even as we pursue our individual destinies. Peridot is a stone of financial and spiritual abundance, and it can aid in attracting and creating our most important inner visions here on Earth. Peridot can be used to bless and energize one’s work, whether it he tending one’s garden, raising children, working as a healer, building a business, or assisting others in such activities. It is not a stone to take one ‘out of this world.’ Rather, it is a tool for helping to bring the physical dimension of reality into alignment with one’s inner truth. This most definitely includes suc- cess and abundance in one’s career endeavors, if one is doing one’s right work, and if one believes oneself to he deserving of success. Peridot can assist one in reestablishing a sense of self-worth if one is plagued by guilt or regret for past deeds. It quiets spiritual fears—for example, those related to a feeling of karmic debt—and allows one to move forward on one’s evolutionary path. It supports one in taking responsibility and making amends for any suffering one may have caused others. Peridot is a powerful generator of the frequency of Increase. It can be used to manifest the increase of wealth, increase of health, and increase ofjoy and emotional well-being. This stone allows you to gently expand your ability to receive from the Universe, accepting your birthright of complete abundance on all levels of life. More than a financial prosperity stone, this ally aids in increasing dne’s ability to receive on all levels. In the process, it may reveal the areas where selfworth issues have not allowed one to receive in the past. Peridot is an Elven stone, carrying the frequency of interdimensional Earth beings who share this planet with the human race. It can be used for contact with the fairy and devic realms and to communicate with Nature spirits of all types. Peridot is an excellent stone for Earth healers, as its energy attunes one to the subtle realms of Nature. Castle Continued from page 35 meet your soul? I wrote Entering The Castle for precisely this reason, as a guide to meet your soul. The soul is a force that is difficult to describe in concrete terms; it must be experienced. If a newly married woman asked a mother, “But describe what childbirth is like and then tell me what it’s like to love your children, because I have to know exactly what that’s like before I have a child so I know for sure if I really want to have a child,” could a mother really find the right words? When I ask that question in a lecture, mothers laugh out loud because they know that until a woman experiences being a mother, she can never know what it is like to love a child. She has to meet that child directly. The same is true for the soul. You have to enter your Castle, beginning with crossing your drawbridge and taking up the exploration of each of the seven mansions. The journey, I will admit, is not easy. Each mansion has many rooms, as I describe in my book, and it’s important that you go into each one. And that’s where you begin. As we enter our personal Castles, what will some of our most profound challenges be? And what will be some of our greatest rewards? How typical to ask for the rewards before you even begin the journey. As for the challenges, the greatest challenge will be to defeat your need to have God be a force of logic and reason in your life. The greatest challenge you will ever face will be to confront your fear of being humiliated and come to understand the power of being humble. When you do, you allow that power of humility to lead you to finally surrender your life to God’s direction for you. It’s so ironic to me that many peo- ple assume that, in surrendering to God, their lives will become miserable and not wonderful. They have no idea that their lives will, in fact, become extraordinary. They cannot see that they have been living in a prison, held captive by a fear of being humiliated and the need for other’s approval most of the days of their lives. The most profound challenge will be to get over the grip the Earth has on you. In the language of Buddha, free yourself from these endless illusions. St. Teresa calls them your reptiles. That freedom is your reward. St. Teresa’s instructions in the Seventh Mansion are to serve the divine through serving others. How can we use prayer and channeling grace to be of service in the world? People have no idea how powerful prayer really is. I listen to people say, “Well, all we can do now is pray,” after they have tried everything else, for example, in medical interventions. If they really understood prayer, they would begin medical procedures with a prayer and then do whatever they can medically. St. Teresa wrote The Interior Castle as a guide to God through prayer, through learning how to rely upon the everincreasing depth of inner dialogue with your soul and God. Through prayer and this spiritual dialog, you discover your profound capacity to become a channel for grace in this world. Grace comes in many forms: illuminated thought, a moment of authority, abundant compassion and courage, the capacity to heal and comfort another, visionary creativity. Grace has many, many forms and grace is meant to be shared, to be distributed to others constantly and under the radar, in silence, invisibly. That’s the role of a mystic out of a monastery – to become an invisible channel for grace in this world, to form circles of grace, to share the capacity to nurture each other, to channel grace at a distance in order to heal others and this Earth, and to bring forth new creative thought. This is a great calling and I know many, many people are emerging as mystics out of monasteries. Many are coming to study with me at CMED because people need support as they venture into their souls’ Castles. Even St. Teresa said that one should not go into the soul alone. You need soul companions. And the groups that form through working in the Castle are profoundly bonded to each other because they come to know each other through prayer and a devotion to bring the best of themselves to each other and to the world. I feel very blessed to be doing this work and I am so grateful to all of these students, so very grateful. And most of all, I am grateful to St. Teresa. Pain Relief Without Drugs A Self-Help Guide for Chronic Pain and Trauma By Jan Sadler Pain Relief without Drugs is a practical, effective, and inspiring guidebook for dealing with chronic pain, explaining how to reduce pain’s grip on the body and mind by changing one’s personal reaction to pain. Chronic pain keeps our attention fixed firmly on our anguish, which then feeds the painful reaction back into our perception of being in pain, creating a vicious cycle. By allowing our reaction to become one of relaxation and acceptance, the pain is dramatically lessened, both by the absence of a negative perception and by the infusion of relaxation into the point of pain. Author Jan Sadler provides easy-touse self-help techniques that offer support and understanding in breaking pain’s cycle—from relaxation, visualization, and breathing techniques to setting goals, building self-esteem, and coping with pain flare-ups. The book is accompanied by a 55-minute CD narrated by the author of key techniques for controlling pain. Healing Arts Press. Paperback, $19.95. Frers shows that the pirates of legend actually originated with the Knights Templar’s secret navy. He also reveals the Templars’ secret objective to establish a new universal order based on spirituality, wisdom, and individualism—the New Jerusalem. Destiny Books. Crossing Press. Paper, $16.95. Christianity An Ancient Egyptian Religion By Ahmed Osman Author Ahmed Osman contends that the roots of Christian belief spring not from Judaea but from Egypt. He compares the chronology of the Old Testament and its factual content with ancient Egyptian records to show that the major characters of the Hebrew scriptures—including Solomon, David, Moses, and Joshua—are based on Egyptian historical figures. He further suggests that not only were these personalities and the stories associated with them cultivated on the banks of the Nile, but the major tenets of Christian belief—the One God, the Trinity, the hierarchy of heaven, life after death, and the virgin birth—are all Egyptian in origin. He likewise provides a convincing argument that Jesus himself came out of Egypt. With the help of modern archaeological findings, Osman shows that Christianity survived as an Egyptian mystery cult until the fourth century A.D., when the Romans embarked on a mission of suppression and persecution. The Origins of Psychic Phenomena Poltergeists, Incubi, Succubi, and the Unconscious Mind By Stan Gooch The Origins of Psychic Phenomena shows how the unconscious mind manifests paranormal phenomena, revealing that the cerebellum—the seat of the unconscious—is the source of these energies, subpersonalities, and manifestations. Author Stan Gooch examines these unexplained phenomena in psychiatric and psychological terms rather than occult terms. Alien abduction, poltergeist attacks, incubi, succubi, split and multiple personalities, possessions, precognition, spontaneous combustion—the list of phenomena not just unexplained but ignored by mainstream science seems endless. Yet the key to the origin of all these manifestations, says Gooch, lies deep within our own brains. Inner Traditions. Paperback, $16.95. Tibetan Sound Healing By Tenzin Wangyal Kinpoche One of the world’s oldest unbroken spiritual traditions is that of the Bön people— the indigenous people of Tibet, whose teachings predate the arrival of Buddhism. These traditions have survived political persecution and upheaval, thanks to the efforts of a handful of dedicated lamas such as Bön lineage holder Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche. Now, with Tibetan Sound Healing practitioners can connect to the ancient sacred sounds of the Bön practice—and through them, activate the healing potential of the natural mind. The Bön healing tradition invokes the Five Warrior Syllables, “seed” sounds that bring us to the essential nature of mind and release the boundless creativity and positive qualities that are fundamental to our natural consciousness. Through the medicine of sound, practitioners learn to clear obstacles on the level of the body, the energetic and emotional dimensions of being, and the spiritual consciousness. The book is accompanied by a CD learning program. Sounds True. Hardcover, $19.95. Biogenealogy Decoding the Psychic Roots of Illness By Patrick Obissier In Biogenealogy: Decoding the Psychic Roots of Illness, therapist Patrick Obissier explores the radical but ultimately logical idea that illness is a physical response to a past emotional trauma. Further, that the illness can be either a result of a person’s own trauma, or, of a trauma experienced by an ancestor and passed down in that family’s genetic code. This unresolved psychic distress, says Obissier, can become part of the cellular memory inherited by their descendants. Until the issue has been settled successfully, it will continue to trigger illnesses in the generations that follow. His investigations show that—far from the adversary conventional medicine purports it to be—illness is an ally, the body’s protective response to severe emotional shock or excessive amounts of stress. Understanding illness in this way, the author says, directs us to look for the psychic conflict which underlies it in order to eliminate the disease, rather than merely treating its symptoms. Healing Arts Press. Paper, $14.95. Fulcanelli and the Alchemical Revival The Man Behind the Mystery of the Cathedrals By Genevieve Dubois Fulcanelli, operative alchemist and author of The Mystery of the Cathedrals and The Dwellings of the Philosophers—two of the most important esoteric works of the twentieth century— remains himself a mystery. The true identity of the man who allegedly succeeded in creating the philosopher’s stone has never been discovered, despite ardent searches by many. Working from rare documents, letters, and archival photos, Genevieve Dubois suggests that Fulcanelli may have been a composite fabricated by several individuals working together. Beyond its attempt to reveal the actual identity of Fulcanelli, this book also presents an explanation of the alchemical doctrine and reveals the unsuspected relationships among the important twentieth-century truth seekers it highlights. Destiny Books. Paper, $14.95. A Psychonaut's Guide to the Invisible Landscape The Topography of the Psychedelic Experience By Dan Carpenter Journeying into the invisible world revealed by his use of the dissociative psychedelic DXM (dextromethorphan), Dan Carpenter found that what he experienced was not simply subjective sensations and psychological states but an objective world of familiar if inordinately odd landmarks and characters. The running diary he kept of these voyages recounts impressions of a landscape charted by other travelers into this inner space and includes descriptions of many of the same phenomena recorded by such mind travelers as Terence and Dennis Mckenna, Alexander and Ann Shulgin, and others who have experienced the Hive Mind—the pool of all consciousness. Into this territory where expression is like chaos theory, where oddly symmetrical order manifests out of the seemingly anarchic swirl of images and events, the author ventures with the mind-set of a naturalist, accepting whatever might be rather than what he hopes he might find. What emerges is not a location crafted by subjective experience, but a landscape that embodies the Other and that represents a conscious state in which the barriers between the self and the not-self dissolve.
