Whatever Happened to Paul Silas?
Often, we are asked, “Whatever
became of Paul Silas?” He was
in many issues in your columns
in Anderson, Athens, and Atlanta.
He always had something that
made you think when you quoted
him.
In all honesty, Paul was from
Hiawassee, Georgia and we met
him at the fair 43 years ago and
he looked like an old man at that
time, but his words were spicy and
clear-cut.
Here are a few examples:
“There was a time when men
walked children and now days,
they walk dogs.” (That quote made Reader’s Digest and paid a grand sum of
$50. We never told who the dog walker was till now and he was the great, late
Jack Ratley, principal of Carnesville Elementary School.)
We never told Mr. Ratley that our observation of him made a worldwide impact
and should have.
Paul also was quoted saying “When you are thinking you are indispensable,
look at the mule collar in the barn loft.”
We could go on forever, but the bottom line is that Paul is now 96 and lives
with two sons and a daughter between Hiawassee and Hayesville, NC.

to Luke, “do you think we should just put up a sign
that says: ‘Bridge Out Ahead’ instead?”

SECOND NOTICE
A taxpayer received a strongly worded “second notice” that his taxes
were overdue. Hastening to the collector’s office, he paid his bill, saying apologetically that he had overlooked the first notice. “Oh,” confided the collector
with a smile, “we don’t send out first notices. We have found that the second
notices are more effective.”

We went to the movies the other night. I sat in an aisle seat as I usually do
because it feels a little roomier. Just as the feature was about to start, a person
from the center of the row got up and started working their way across. “Excuse me, sorry, oops, excuse me, pardon me, gotta hurry, oops, excuse me.”
By the time the person got to me I was trying to see the screen and I was a
little impatient so I said, “Couldn’t you have done this a little earlier?”
“No!!” was the loud whisper, “The TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE PLEASE
message just flashed up on the screen and mine was out in the car.”

Polly had a home at one time, but when her owner passed away she was left
to roam the neighborhood alone. A big girl, it took some time until someone
would care enough to transport her to the shelter, at least there she would
have an opportunity at adoption or rescue. Bigger dogs are harder to place,
especially to be inside pets, so when one of our rescuers walked by Polly’s
run and she reached out her paw, we didn’t immediately bring her home. The
rescuer did take the beautiful blond with sad brown eyes for a walk and fell in love with her. We told
shelter staff to keep Polly safe and if her time ran out to call us. It didn’t take long and we got the call.
Polly came to us heart worm positive and has now been treated, she is spayed, micro chipped, up to
date on vaccinations, been treated for parasites and is on preventative. Polly is an approximately 3 year
old Golden/Pyrenees mix. She has the Pyrenees trait of leaning on those she trust, she gets along with
other dogs and pretty much ignores cats. Polly is a quiet girl and will be a wonderful friend and companion. If you would like more information or would like to meet our sweet Polly please call 706-436-0965
