WORD FROM THE PASTOR
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
This fifth Sunday of Lent of the Year of Faith brings with it
the news of Pope Francis who became the successor of Peter last
Wednesday and will solemnly celebrate the beginning of his pontificate next Tuesday, March 19th, solemnity of St. Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patron of the universal Church.
The day after his election, the new Pope celebrated Holy Mass
together with the cardinal electors in the Sistine Chapel, just like
Benedict XVI had done almost eight years ago. On that occasion,
Francis delivered an inspiring and prophetic homily based on the
readings proclaimed, taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah
(Is 2:2-5), the first letter of St. Peter (1 Pt 2:4-9) and the Gospel
according to St. Mathew, chapter 16, namely the confession of St.
Peter, his profession of faith and his primacy. I offer the complete
text of Francis’ first homily, because it seems to me that what he
says to the cardinals is appropriate for each and every one of us
and because beyond the media hype and noise, this homily can be
seen as his program for the Church.
“There is something that I see that these three readings have in
common: movement. In the first reading it is the movement of a
journey; in the second reading it is the movement in building the
Church; in the third, the Gospel, it is the movement of confession.
Journeying, building, confessing.
Journeying. “House of Jacob, come, let us walk together in
the light of the Lord” (Isaiah 2:5). This is the first thing that God
said to Abraham: Walk in my presence and you will be blameless.
Journey: our life is a journey and when we stop it does not go
on. Journey always in the presence of the Lord, in the light of the
Lord, seeking to live with that blamelessness that God asked of
Abraham in his promise.
Building. Building the Church. Stones are spoken of: the stones
have a consistency, but they are the living stones, stones anointed
by the Spirit. Building the Church, the Bride of Christ, upon that
cornerstone that is the Lord himself. Building is another form of
movement in our life.
Third, confessing. We can journey as much as we want, we
can build many things, but if we do not confess Jesus Christ, the
thing does not work. We will become a welfare NGO but not the
Church, the Bride of Christ. When we do not journey, we stop.
When we do not build upon the stones, what happens? Everything
collapses, loses its consistency, like the sandcastles that children
build on the beach. When we do not confess Jesus Christ, I am
reminded of the words of Léon Bloy: “Whoever does not pray
to the Lord, prays to the devil.” When we do not confess Jesus
Christ, we confess the worldliness of the devil, the worldliness of
the demon.
Journeying, building-constructing, confessing. But it is not that
easy, because in journeying, in constructing, in confessing, there
are problems, there are movements antithetical to the journey:
they are movements that take us backward.
This Gospel continues with an important moment. The same Peter
who had confessed Jesus Christ said to him: You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God. I will follow you, but let’s not talk
about the cross. This is not a part of it. I will follow you in other
directions, but not to the cross. When we journey without the cross,
when we build without the cross and when we confess a Christ
without the cross, we are not disciples of the Lord: we are worldly,
we are bishops, priests, cardinals, popes, but not disciples of the
Lord.
I would like for us all, after these days of grace, to have courage,
precisely the courage, to walk in the Lord’s presence, with the cross
of the Lord; to build the Church upon the blood of the Lord, which
was poured out on the cross; and to confess the only glory there is:
Christ crucified. And in this way the Church will go forward.
It is my wish for all of us that the Holy Spirit – through the prayer
of Our Lady, our Mother – bestow upon us the grace of journeying,
building, confessing Jesus Christ crucified. Amen”
Francis is proposing to us anew the program of the Gospel,
the program that brings the fullness of life: to walk in the light of
the Lord, to build on the foundation of Christ, to proclaim Christ
crucified.
In the Gospel today, we also see the Lord Jesus exhorting us to begin to move. “Go and sin no more” he tells the woman caught committing adultery. These words echo in our hearts in a particular way
at this time. We too are called to walk, to be in motion, avoiding sin
in order to walk together with Christ, building up the Kingdom
Caminar, edificar, confesar.
of God and confessing, presenting Jesus Christ to the world,
through the witness of our Christian lives, our virtuous lives.
May the Lord grant us the grace to walk together with Francis, who is Peter, and under his guidance, holding hands with
the Blessed Virgin Mary, looking intently at Christ, so that
we can cooperate in the construction of the Kingdom of God,
confessing with virtuous lives, lives of Faith, the One who
became sin for us in order to redeem us and lead us to the
fullness of Life!
Caminar.
He aquí otro movimiento de
nuestra vida: edificar.
Fr. Roberto M. Cid
Tercero, confesar.
somos mundanos, somos obispos, sacerdotes, cardenales, papas,

“When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, you will find me with you,
says the Lord.” – Jeremiah 29:13-14
Join us as we read and discuss a current news event each week, then use Biblical passages to reflect upon where God
is to be found and how he calls us to respond, to think and act as people of faith. More than historical text of things
that happened long ago, we relate to the people and events and see their struggles and successes mirrored in our own
times, our own lives. The Bible comes alive to us and inspires us to closeness with God.
For those with email, the story will be sent a day or two before class meets. For those without email, the story will
be distributed at class. Please bring a Bible to class.

St. Patrick’s Faith-based Grief Sharing Group
Have you recently experienced the death of a loved one or are you
presently dealing with a loved one’s terminal illness? If you are,
you need not go through the grieving process alone. St. Patrick’s
is establishing a faith-based grief sharing group which will meet
once a week on Tuesday evening at 7:30pm in the conference
room of the Tower. The first meeting of the group will take place
on Tuesday, March 12 at 7:30pm.
The mission of St. Patrick’s grief sharing group is to help participants accept the reality of their loss; assist them as they experience the physical and emotional pain of the grieving process;
adjust to life without the deceased or the terminally ill loved one;
and find an enduring connection with the deceased and about-tobe deceased so that the participants can move on with their life.
The group will be conducted in an open, non-judgmental and caring atmosphere. If you or someone you know might be interested
in joining the group, please contact Arthur Gowran at [email protected].
